Call for Proposals ICA Preconference/Unconference on Technologies of Sex and Gender: Queer Theories and Subjects Sponsored by the Gay Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Studies Interest Group 9 am- 4 pm, May 22, 2014 University of Washington, Department of Communication Cost: Free This ICA preconference brings together scholars, activists, and artists working on gender, sexuality, communication, media, and technology to examine, debate, and plan new projects, including: · Investigating how the strategies activists and artists have developed in this field can transform academic research practice, as well as how academics can contribute to activist and artistic technology projects · Providing an interdisciplinary environment in which LGBT, queer, and gender-nonconforming technology scholars, activists, and artists can network with each other, learn about current work in these fields, forge partnerships, and develop new collaborative projects · Creating applications, games, and art that explore, celebrate, or undermine sexualized and gendered subjectivities. · Researching how LGBT, queer, and gender nonconforming populations employ technologies in specific historical and cultural contexts (particularly by looking at the intersections of gender, race, nationality, class, and sexuality in these contexts) · Discussing how queer, transgender, and feminist theories can be brought to bear on technology research, and how these fields can and must transform each other in the process · Exploring how queer, transgender, and feminist theories can be integrated into technology design practice · Ascertaining how scholars have used and can use technologies to study sexual- and gender-nonconforming communities, including their own The preconference’s goal is to provoke encounters that would set in motion future collaborations and networks among artists, activists, and scholars. It utilizes the “unconference” format, in which participants, rather than organizers, decide on the agenda from among their own submitted proposals. This allows for more intensive interaction, higher-level conversations, and a more engaged, productive experience than traditional academic conferences. SCHEDULE AND FORMAT: · Today: You read this CFP. · By January 20: You submit a Session Leader or Participation proposal to ica.glbt(a)gmail.com. See below for a description of the proposal format. · February 1: The organizers will send an acceptance letter to everyone who has submitted a proposal. All proposals will be posted on the Technologies of Sex and Gender website. · February 1 – April 30: All applicants comment online on the proposals, voting for the sessions they are likely to attend and offering suggestions for changes and additions. · May 10: The organizers create and post a working schedule for the preconference and notify session applicants of the likelihood of their session being included. May 22: The unconference · The first morning session will introduce the unconference format. Attendees will take part in an open vote on the schedule, making suggestions, changes, or additions. The schedule will be finalized in this first session, after which the other sessions will begin. Depending on level of interest and number of attendees, there may be simultaneous sessions. · Sessions will proceed throughout the morning following the proposals, but with an openness to exploring new directions that may organically arise (often new sessions are added throughout the day, sessions are combined, or break-out groups are formed over the course of unconferences). · During the lunch break, attendees will give a series of “Speed Presentations”: 1- to 2-minute, rapid-fire presentations about one of their current projects. These are intended as very brief introductions, not extended discussions. Each proposal should give enough information to help attendees decide which sessions to vote for and participate in. On behalf of the organising committee, Lisbeth Klastrup IT University of Copenhagen CALL FOR PAPERS First Death Online Research Symposium April 9th and 10th, 2014 Center for Life and Death Studies University of Durham, England As digital media have become an integral part of our everyday life, so have also death and our afterlife become inextricably interwoven with technology. Marking the formation of the international research network Death Online Research, this first Death Online Research Symposium will focus on current research into the digital mediation of dying, death, mourning and personal legacy, in order to explore and discuss how online connectivity is changing how, when and where we engage with death. Confirmed keynote speaker at the symposium will be Professor Tony Walters, Director of the Centre for Death and Society at the University of Bath. For the symposium, we invite presentations of ongoing or recently completed research within the following areas: memorial sites online; explorations of new ways of grieving though social media; the use of mobile technologies in graveyards; and the discussion of pertinent problems related to the digital afterlife and people's digital inheritance. In addition, we welcome other relevant perspectives on the impact digital technology has on everyday practices in the context of death in the 21st century. Hi David, Perhaps this is relevant. We studied non users of location-sharing social networks, and a lot of the data pointed to similar factors playing a role in non use for other social media. We discovered a communication style trait that explained over fifty percent of the variance of adoption as well as low usage in our studies, including a nationwide geographically balanced survey (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=2493432.2493487 or http://bit.ly/FYILSSN) Other differences between users and non users included privacy management tactics and perceptions (some of this is published in these papers http://bit.ly/BoundPreserve, http://bit.ly/tangledWeb) In our qualitative research we did not see as much "stigmatization" as different expectations regarding social norms and etiquette. *WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO GO VIRAL* *Daniel Miller* I guess most of you will have seen some items of news based on my initial blog about Facebook no longer being cool amongst teens. It was not just NBC TV news, I had emails from Taiwan to Chile telling me it was out in local languages. I have now published a new blog post called Scholarship, Integrity and Going Viral athttp://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/social-networking/ which reflects on the experience and responds to some of the criticism. Actually I entirely stand by my original assertion. My ethnographic research has shown that in terms of coolness the phrase `dead and buried’ was not an exaggeration. The statistics may not help, the teens don’t leave Facebook, they keep it for family connections. But they stop using it to communicate with peers. The schools know this perfectly well. They communicate with pupils through Twitter, never Facebook. If you doubt me, just ask the teens. The problem was that journalists used that phrase to refer to the prospects of Facebook as a company, while our research shows that in some of our other fieldsites such as India or Brazil there is no evidence for any decline in its attraction amongst teens. But you might look at the new blog post because it is a salutary lesson in keeping control over what you post. Journalists constantly try and persuade you that you `need’ to sex-up your academic language, but you just might want to resist this. Web Science embraces the study of the Web as a vast universal information network of people and communities. As such, Web Science includes the study of social networks whose work, expression, and play take place on the Web. The social sciences and computational sciences meet in Web Science and complement one another: Studying human behavior and social interaction contributes to our understanding of the Web, while Web data is transforming how social science is conducted. The Web presents us with a great opportunity as well as an obligation: If we are to ensure the Web benefits humanity we must do our best to understand it. TL;DR version - Facebook use might decline somewhat in the coming months and years but given the amount it's being used by teens it has a long way to fall before it's anything close to dead. Best, Anna Haverinen Digital Culture, University of Turku, Finland _____________ CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Thanatos vol. 3 1/2014 Theme issue: Death, mourning and the internet Computer and mobile technologies have now provided a new space and medium to connect and share at the time of loss and bereavement. People seek out for places of ritualised actions, such as lighting candles, writing eulogies, visit memorials during anniversaries and feeling the sense of community at the time of loss. Internet provides a new space for rituals, feeling of co-presence and communality, where memorials are being erected in various online environments. This new way of expressing mourning and honoring are rising interesting questions about value, family, identity, friendship and love. Who is allowed to create a virtual memorial? Who has access and ownership to the material we leave online? Is it only the young people, the Web 2.0 generation,and the digital natives, who are appropriating internet technology to cope with loss and bereavement? What are the problems of using the internet in hospice care? How virtuality, death and/or the after world are being conceptualised through the Web? Thanatos (www.thanatos-journal.com) is a peer-reviewed, multi-disciplinary and a scientific webjournal published by the Finnish Death Studies Association (www.kuolemantutkimus.com) We publish twice a year a journal that consists of articles, short and long research reports, book reviews, columns and seminar reports. The primary publication language is Finnish, but we do accept manuscripts in English and Swedish as well, however, the costs of proofreading are the responsibility of the author. We now invite abstracts in English, Swedish or Finnish (max 400 words) for articles (max 8000 words) and research reports (max 5000 words) from the following example themes: • Digital afterlife • Internet and hospice care • Space and spatiality in virtual memorials • Identity and virtual memorials • Online memorials and heritage • Memorials and online gaming • Death and Facebook • Memorial videos in Youtube (Vimeo etc.) • Online funerals The above mentioned topics are only examples and we encourage you to send your own ideas as well.
