Call for Proposed Abstracts for a Special Section on “Weber and the Digital Divide: Class, Status, and Power in the Digital Age”
by Massimo Ragnedda 27 Jan '14

27 Jan '14

Dear Colleagues, My colleague Glenn Muschert (Miami Univ.) and I are editing a special collection of articles on Max Weber and the Digital Divide. We are organizing a special journal section for the International Journal of Communication (http://ijoc.org/index.php/ijoc) which will examine how Max Weber’s theories may be used in studying digital inequalities. Indeed, this project builds (in part) on some of the ideas explored in our previous volume on *The Digital Divide: The Internet and Social Inequality in International Context *(Routledge 2013): http://books.google.com/books?id=OgYx8URCnU4C. Please see the attached Call for Proposals for details on the scope, timing, and mechanics of this project. Also, please feel welcome to post this call for papers widely and to forward it to interested colleagues and students. We hope to see some proposals from many of you, and for now, please feel welcome to be in contact if you have any questions for us. *C**all* *for Proposed Abstracts for a Special Section on* *“Weber and the Digital Divide: Class, Status, and Power in the Digital Age”* *International Journal of Communication - **http://ijoc.org <http://ijoc.org/>* *Special Editors: Massimo Ragnedda, Northumbria Univ. (UK) & Glenn W. Muschert, Miami Univ. (USA)* Much of the literature on stratification in the digital sphere (i.e., digital divides) has focused on the fundamental material relations of inequality present in the digital divide, often relying on Marxist/conflict schools of thought. To broaden the scope, the current project turns to Max Weber for new perspectives on stratification in the digital sphere. The project will stimulate scholarly exchange about how social stratification in the digital age is reproduced not only based on class dynamics (economic aspects), but also by status/prestige (cultural aspects), and in group affiliations (political aspects). Access to the economic means of production can indeed limit digital participation; however, Weber also posits that the process of stratification expresses itself in two other forms, namely “status” and “party.” Potential contributors are invited to explore the importance of status and political influence in a liquid society, such as the importance of prestige in digital participation (or exclusion), or the influence of political affiliation upon digital divides. Papers may be theoretical and/or analytical in nature, and should examine digital divides in relation to dynamics social class (lifestyle and culture), social status (prestige and market influence), and/or power (political impact/legitimacy). Submissions are welcomed from scholars at all stages of their careers, and from various relevant disciplines (sociology, communications, media studies, etc.). Possible topics for articles include, but are not limited to: · Interplay among economic (class), cultural (status), and/or political (party) factors of digital divides. · The role of digital participation/exclusion on individual and/or group life chances. · The relevance of skills (digital literacy), certifications, and and legitimating credentials in digital divides. · The role of status and prestige hierarchies in digital participation/exclusion (or vice versa). · Cultural meanings (including religious and/or secular value systems) and digital divides. · Political life (i.e., power relations) and dynamics of digital inclusion/exclusion. · Bureaucratic/institutional relationships and digital divides. · Forms of rationality in the digital (e.g., *Zweckrationalität *vs. *Wertrationalität */ ends vs. means rationality). · The influence of worldview (*Weltanschauung) *on digital participation/exclusion. Submissions should be in the form of extended abstracts of around 750 words in MS Word, sent as an email attachment to Massimo Ragnedda ( ragnedda(a)gmail.com) and Glenn Muschert (muschegw(a)MiamiOH.edu) *The* *deadline for submissions is 1 April 2014. * Abstracts will be judged on criteria of relevance and originality of topic. Notification of initially-approved abstracts will be announced in mid-April, after which contributors will be asked to move forward to the peer-review submission phase. Contributions of 7000 words (maxi mum including abstract, footnotes, tables/figures with captions, references, and appendices, if any) will be due 1 July 2014. All submissions must adhere to APA (6th edition) formatting to include: · Any endnotes should be converted to footnotes. · Authors must include their profile, including affiliation and rank, when submitting a manuscript. · All articles should include an abstract of 150 words. · All articles must include a bibliography at the end that conforms to the most current APA style. · All spellings must be rendered in American English. To change British or Commonwealth spellings to their American equivalents, please see the *Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.* · Only one submission per author will be considered at a time. Contributions will be subject to double-blind peer review, and to encourage coherence in the special section, all contributors will be requested to act as a peer reviewer for at least one other article. After all necessary revisions and editing, the special section is scheduled to publish in 2015. Also, please feel welcome to post this call for papers widely and to forward it to interested colleagues and students. We hope to see some proposals from many of you, and for now, please feel welcome to be in contact if you have any questions for us. CfP: Protecting privacy in a surveillance age - symposium sustainability, ethics and cyberspace at the EMCSR 2014 April 22-25, Vienna
by Stefan Strauß 27 Jan '14

27 Jan '14

Apologies for cross-posting Call for Abstracts (more details attached):/* */ /*Protecting privacy in a surveillance age -- utopia or sine qua non for a sustainable informational ecosystem? */ Privacy is among the most contested issues in contemporary society, not least amplified by the driving force of information and the convergence between analogue and digital environments. This informational transformation of socio-technical systems strains controllability of personal information flows and provides extensive options for privacy infringement and surveillance practices (e.g. drastically highlighted by recent scandals on mass surveillance by security agencies on a global scale); Continuing growth in the availability of personal information is yet unbroken; and individuals encounter further decrease of control over their information and thus their private sphere. Entailed to ongoing socio-technical alterations are controversial views on the function of privacy and its relation to other societal concepts such as security, surveillance practices and transparency. While some technologists propagate a "post-privacy" era linked to utopian visions of blooming open societies free from harm enabled by free information flows, privacy advocates underline the need for a revitalization of privacy. Dichotomized views and perceived trade-offs on privacy vs. security/surveillance often complicate the development of effective privacy-enhancing concepts. Not least as they neglect the societal function of privacy, the complexity of information and the related control mechanisms in socio-technical systems. This session aims to overcome dichotomous framings by reflecting on the contemporary role of privacy and potential ways to improve the effectiveness of sustainable privacy-enhancing concepts. Topics of interest include but are not limited to * Dimensions and core functions of privacy in socio-technical/informational eco-systems * Current and emerging privacy challenges * Concepts and models towards a sustainable privacy concept * The (contradictory and complementary) role of transparency and its interplay with privacy * Privacy as a system, system (theoretical) views on concepts and mechanisms * Sustainability concepts and their potential adaption to privacy * Privacy-by-design mechanisms and their role as integral part of the informational ecosystem and/or subsystems This session is part of the Symposium Sustainability, Ethics and Cyberspace at the European Meetings on Cybernetics and Systems Research (EMCSR) 2014 - Civilisation at the Crossroads - Response and Responsibility of the Systems Sciences, Vienna, 22-25 April 2014.* * Please submit your extended abstracts (1-3 pages, 750-2000 words) by *February 15.* For further information and submission guidelines please visit: http://emcsr.net/calls-2014/calls-for-papers-2014/sustainability-ethics-and… Looking forward to your contributions! In regard to the recent coverage about predictions of Facebook’s future demise—to me the important untold story here is the “mission creep” where predicting the future has become such valued analytical goal. I just wrote something for the wonderful folks at Culture Digitally about this - take a look! http://culturedigitally.org/2014/01/trending-ethnography-notes-on-import-pr… All the best, Tom Boellstorff

http://business.time.com/2014/01/21/facebook-is-about-to-lose-80-of-its-use… Facebook’s growth will eventually come to a quick end, much like an infectious disease that spreads rapidly and suddenly dies, say Princeton researchers who are using diseases to model the life cycles of social media. Disease models can be used to understand the mass adoption and subsequent flight from online social networks, researchers at Princeton’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering say in a study released Jan. 17. The study has not been peer-reviewed. Updating traditional models on disease spread to assume that “recovery” requires contact with a nondiseased member — i.e., a nonuser of Facebook (“recovered” member of the population) — researchers predicted that Facebook would see a rapid decline, causing the site to lose 80% of its peak user base between 2015 and 2017. Basically, Facebook users will lose interest in Facebook over time as their peers lose interest — if the model is correct. ”Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out, and have been successfully described with epidemiological models,” write the researchers. You can check out the full study here. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.4208v1.pdf -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Joly MacFie 218 565 9365 Skype:punkcast WWWhatsup NYC - http://wwwhatsup.com http://pinstand.com - http://punkcast.com VP (Admin) - ISOC-NY - http://isoc-ny.org -------------------------------------------------------------- -

24 Jan '14

The Call for Proposals for the 2014 Emerging Learning Design Conference is about to close, this Sunday, January 26th. http://eld.montclair.edu/eld14-call-for-proposals/ It is not too late to begin thinking about submitting something. #ELD14 is using a revise and resubmit process, similar to what journals use. So a submission that comes in on the 26th will be reviewed by our program committee and accepted or returned with comments, which will give the submitter an opportunity to resubmit, even though the initial submission date has passed. Please consider putting together a proposal. Also, as a reminder, registration is currently open and the Early Bird rate is still available, but there are only 22 seats left at the current price. best, aj p.s. - great thanks to our Platinum Partners: Montclair State University, our Gold Partner: ELI, and our Silver Partner: Cecil College. law papers on freedom of speech
by Burcu Bakioglu 24 Jan '14

24 Jan '14

Hi AoiR peeps, If I may bother you with one more request: Do any of you legal types have a legal paper to recommend on freedom of speech for my Internet Governance class? I have a couple at hand but I'm not convinced that they are the most current ones. As with everything Internet, even last year's paper could be sometimes considered to be outdated and with governance you want to present the latest out there, i think... I remember a few legal scholars on the list, I just can't remember exactly who they were, so apologies for a blanket call like this. Thank you in advance. BsB -- Thanks, Burcu S.
