Adding AIR-L to Gmane?

Hi All, I was curious as to whether folks might be amenable to adding the AIR-L mailing list to Gmane.org (http://gmane.org/faq.php) which—if you're not already familiar with it—is a really great open/non-profit service for indexing and accessing mailing list archives. The development mailing lists for pretty much all the major open source software projects are archived there, as are lots of other interesting listservs. Adding the AIR-L list would be free, and since the archives of AIR-L are already public on the web it wouldn't be exposing private information. Meanwhile, the benefits are quite nice. Gmane makes the list contents accessible via RSS, allowing folks to peruse them in their favorite feed reader. It also makes list messages available via Usenet's NNTP protocol, allowing those of use who use Gnus or other reading tools with Usenet capability to peruse messages in a threaded newsgroup format. Meanwhile on the web, Gmane organizes mailing list archives in a very nice threaded display (e.g., http://news.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel) or it can display them in a format reminiscent of a blog (http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.devel) both these web formats are convenient to search and to navigate. These additional methods of viewing the list contents would allow everyone to view the latest messages in the environment of their choice—on the web in a threaded or blog view, via a feed reader, or via a Usenet client. This might satisfy some recent queries by folks who wished for a form of access to AIR-L aside from email, while still maintaining its integrity as a mailing list. It would also make it even simpler to access and search through the back catalogue of messages for things like literature suggestions, CFPs, or shared syllabi that you may have seen some months back and only now have found a need for. It is true, of course, that adding the list to Gmane may increase the visibility of the list contents to non-subscribers, making it easier for folks to stumble upon and peruse. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is up for discussion. But as I mention above, the contents of the list are already technically public on the web. And I somewhat doubt that this increased visibility would amount to much. I've never seen the contents of a Gmane list in the top page of a Google search unless I was explicitly searching a phrase from an archived message. And there are over 14,000 of other mailing lists in the Gmane index, amongst which AIR-L would be a relatively minor footnote. I'd love to access AIR-L in Gnus and in my RSS reader, and I think Gmane would provide a great benefit in this regard. But I'm curious as to what other folks think. All the Best, Josh Braun

New Special Issue of Sexualities on the Fifty Shades Phenomenon

(With apologies for cross posting) Dear all, The latest issue of Sexualities journal is out today, which is a special issue on Fifty Shades co-edited by myself, Sarah Harman and Ruth Deller. The issue is open access until March and is available at http://sex.sagepub.com/content/current Obligatory blurb from Sage’s website: Since their release in paperback in the spring of 2012, the Fifty Shades trilogy by British author E.L. James have generated enormous interest both in terms of sales and public debate. The novels blend a somewhat conventional romantic narrative with sexual passages that have a BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism, Masochism) flavour. They quickly became bestsellers, topping the New York Times bestsellers list on eBook sales alone. Their success led to a range of similar titles being marketed in their wake. It is suggested this heralded a ‘revolution’ of women downloading erotic eBooks. The interest in the books as a phenomenon arose from the backgrounds of the authors of this issue as academics with an interest in studying media, sexual cultures, gender, literature and audiences. The articles presented in this special issue (http://sex.sagepub.com/content/16/8.toc) represent a range of responses to the series. Contributors come from a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, literature, law, religious studies, geography, media and cultural studies. The contributions explore three significant areas of study: the texts themselves; the responses of different reader communities to these books; and the series’ relationship to wider debates about sexuality within culture. Apologies for cross-posting *Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies* *Special Issue on Expertise and Engagement with/in Digital Media* Vo1 21, no. 3 (August 2015) Editors: Caroline Bassett, University of Sussex; Edgar Gómez Cruz, University of Leeds; Helen Thornham, University of Leeds In an digitally saturated environment digital media users of all kinds, engaged in diverse areas of activity, are increasingly categorized in terms of their ability to use - they are regarded as natives, non-users, experts, literates, for instance. In these contexts the question (1) of how various forms of digital expertise develop, and (2) of how understandings of expertise come into being and come to operate, become increasingly important. Digital expertise might appear to be simply descriptive (of a particular capacity to use), or unproblematically normative (indicating an elevated level of engagement that may be viewed as desirable), however there are multiple understandings of what digital expertise ‘is’ (what kind of skilled engagement with digital materials it delineates/demands/entails), and multiple ways in which it is judged and valued. Our contention is that these conceptions of expertise are contextually produced; they intersect with various social categories and discourses, and they come to operate in social contexts with some force. Our starting point is that digital expertise is at once material and a social construction. The focus of the special issue is motivated by conceptual and critical questions around the values and qualities and activities increasingly claimed and collated with ‘expertise’: the recourse to authoritative voices as embodying particular forms of knowledge, the claims made around data and information, the valuing of particular modes of expression, mediation or participation over others: all of these locate and conceptualise expertise – and consequently, knowledge, literacy, mediation, participation – in particular ways. Who – or what – is a digital expert and what is evidenced in the name of expertise, and who can be an expert and who cannot; these issues signal new power relations that are emerging around use, and for instance gender, knowledge, data and materials. As expertise becomes increasingly conflated with experience, literacy or knowledge; as expertise is seemingly evidenced in online co-created or curated content; and as statements and mined data are used and claimed in new ways as expert, what we mean by ‘expertise’ clearly needs investigation. This special issue of Convergence seeks to bring together innovative theoretical and methodological frameworks that explore the conception, practice and creation of expertise in relation to digital technologies. We invite contributions that engage with expertise addressing themes including (but not confined to): · What is expertise in a digital environment and what does it look like? · What new modes and practices of expertise are emerging, and what kinds of cultural products result? · What are the implications of these new forms of cultural products for communities and cultures? · How do cultures and communities become better enabled to engage with, use, make sense of and even make digital media? · What is the relationship between expertise, experience, literacy and knowledge? · How do digital transformations reconfigure expertise and what are the implications of this for knowledge, literacy, use and experience? · Where is expertise located – i.e. is it bound up in the conception of the user, or created and claimed alongside new data configurations– and to what extent do such locations matter? World University and School (which is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW and planning online, C.C. MIT-centric, university degrees in many languages) is also planning to develop academic journals in large languages to begin. For example, at present anyone can go to any subject on the main, WUAS, wiki, Subjects page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - in English only (at this time), and find Academia.edu near the top, and potentially add the article they've written to that subject. As a result, globally distributed virtual teams now support the work of organizations across the spectrum of products and services. Such teams are used by a range of for-profit and non-profit organizations including businesses, government organizations, military, and educational institutions. These organizations are increasingly employing individuals located in different nations to engage in various types of collaborative work via ICTs. As a result of such factors, much of the modern workforce is now migrating toward a virtual model of work, and forces associated with globalization are changing the nature of competitiveness in the new economy. Individuals, in turn, must often adapt rapidly to virtual environments and do so with little or no formal preparation in the types of professional communication practices essential to success in such contexts. As a result, individuals working in internationally distributed teams must generally learn from their mistakes, an effective but often costly approach. Moreover, individuals must also often adapt to working in an environment in which they are regularly paired with new colleagues and clients from different nations, cultures, and language groups. Thus, the modern distributed workplace requires employees to account for and address three central factors-technology, culture, and language-in order to succeed in most work-related tasks. An all-important question arising from this situation is, "How can we better prepare these individuals for this international, online context?" A 2012 IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication special issue on global training reveals, however, that very little information on training-particularly global virtual communication training-has been published in the major professional communication journals in the last ten years. Such a gap needs to be closed if educators and trainers alike wish to prepare adult learners to be successful participants in current (and future) business practices and processes. This special issue on education and training for globally distributed virtual teams seeks to address this topic through articles on how best to prepare individuals to succeed in this new workplace. In particular, the editors are interested in articles that answer questions such as: * What types of education and training are most desired by managers and participants of global virtual teams? * How can organizations best prepare virtual team members for working across boundaries of language? What issues affect translation and terminology? What do team members most need to know about World Englishes, English as a Second Language, or English for Specific Purposes? * How can organizations better prepare employees to collaborate and cooperate online and across cultural boundaries? * How can social media be used to prepare individuals for working in intercultural online contexts? * What legal issues can affect or should be included in global virtual team training? What should participants in global virtual teams know about proprietary information and privacy? In addition, the editors of this special issue welcome articles such as: * Industry commentaries (refer to "types of articles" below). * Critical analyses of the many published task/technology models that support global virtual teams. * Critical analyses of virtual team studies in areas such as technical training, adult education, human resources development, educational technology, human performance technology, technical communication, and user experience design. This is a great discussion. I’d like to echo Daren’s comments and add Surveillance Studies<http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/surveillance-and-society/about/edit…>to the list of high quality open access journals. Tenured faculty support of open access seems to be critical moving forward. I might argue that “support” is not enough and that tenured faculty should begin to think seriously about alternative models to Big Publishing and consider completely withdrawing their labor, expertise, and credibility from a system that clearly undermines non-profit academic institutions through exploitative labor practices. Yes, exploitative. With the ongoing rise of contingent faculty, it the model whereby academic publishing labor is “built in” to faculty salaries is disappearing. I’m not tenured, but I suspect that this has been ongoing for some time. With all due respect, if there are any arguments for why tenured faculty should continue to edit, review, and publish in the commercial conglomerate press system, I would like to hear them. Just to be clear for Matthieu, my point wasn't about services and whether people like academia.edu or not. Many of my colleagues love it. My concern is profit models and ethical and social obligations, especially differences between theirs and mine. The walled garden is reason enough for me not to opt in. I have managed to continue discovering good new work without it. On the services front, just a big +1 to the points from Daren and Rex. Also: if you want open access journals to have higher impact factors, don't just submit to them, read the and cite them. And one more thing: those of us who write tenure reviews also need to take time in our letters to argue for the significance of new publishing models when junior scholars take advantage of them. Mobile Devices in Education: An E-Waste Survey

Phd Position in Social Media and Internet Studies at Umeå University, Sweden We have a 4-5 year fully funded position available for a person looking to write a PhD in the field of Social Media and Internet Studies. The deadline for applying is January 31st 2014. The position is connected to my Internet/Social Media research group at the Department of Sociology. The person hired will become part of the interdisciplinary environment for digital studies within the social sciences and the humanities at Umeå University. A key part of this setting is the Media Places Research Program (http://humlab.umu.se/en/research-development/media-places/) Within the sociological part of this project we are currently studying social media activism, as well as processes of collective coping with trauma through social media.
