CFP Queer, feminist digital media praxis. Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media, and Technology
by Kate O'Riordan 09 Jul '13

09 Jul '13

> Call for papers > Queer, feminist digital media praxis > Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media, and Technology | adanewmedia.org > Issue 3, May 2014 > > Editors: Aristea Fotopoulou (University of Sussex), Alex Juhasz (Pitzer College), Kate O'Riordan (University of Sussex/ University of California, Santa Cruz) > > We invite contributions to a peer-reviewed special issue that brings together artistic, theoretical, critical and empirical responses to a range of questions around mediation, technology and gender equality. In particular we are interested in exploring what the concept of praxis could offer in our thinking about the intersections of gender, digital media, and technology. > > Praxis in both Marxist and in Arendtian political thought brings together theory, philosophy and political action into the realm of the everyday. Inspired from this premise, and continuing the conversations that started during the workshop Queer, feminist social media praxis at the University of Sussex in May 2013 (queerfemdigiact.wordpress.com) we focus here on the conditions for a feminist digital media praxis. Media praxis, in other words the “making and theorising of media towards stated projects of world and self-changing” (mediapraxis.org) could be a vital component of feminist and/or queer political action. We are interested in the different modes of political action for social justice, enabled by digital technologies and social media, including theory, art, activism or pedagogy. What kinds of possibilities or impossibilities do these technologies and platforms offer for interpreting and intervening in the world? > > The fourth issue of Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media and Technology seeks submissions that explore the concept of feminist, queer, digital media praxis. We welcome unpublished work from scholars of any discipline and background, including collaborative, non-traditional, or multimodal approaches that can especially benefit from the journal’s open access online status. > Topics and approaches might include, but are not limited to: > > Affect, desire and disgust > Diffractive readings > Digital storytelling > Herstories, archiving and remembering > Feminist pedagogy > LGBTQ Youth > New media bodies > Imaginaries, futures and technological utopias > Radical art practices > Science, technology and social justice > > We invite submissions for individual papers on any of the above themes or related themes. Contributions in formats other than the traditional essay are encouraged; please contact the editor to discuss specifications and/or multimodal contributions. > > All submissions should be sent by 15th August, to A.Fotopoulou(a)sussec.ac.uk. They should be accompanied by the following information in the email message with your submission attachment: > > Name(s), affiliation(s), email address(es) of the person(s) submitting. > Title of the text > Abstract of 400-600 words > > Please note that Ada uses a two-level review process that is open to members of the Fembot Collective. For more information about our review policy, see these guidelines: http://adanewmedia.org/beta-reader-and-review-policy/. > > Important dates: > > - Deadline for abstracts: 15th August 2013 > - Notification of accepted papers: 1st September 2013 > - Deadline for full essays: 5th December 2013 > - Expected publication date: May 2014 > > About Ada: > > Ada is an online, open access, open source, peer-reviewed journal run on a nonprofit basis by feminist media scholars from Canada, the UK, and the US. The journal’s first issue was published online in November 2012 and has so far received more than 75,000 page views. Ada operates a review process that combines the feminist mentorship of fan communities with the rigor of peer review. Read more at http://adanewmedia.org/beta-reader-and-review-policy/. We do not — and will never — charge fees for publishing your materials, and we will share those materials using a Creative Commons License. > > Information about the editors: > > Aristea Fotopoulou is postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, working at the intersections of media & cultural studies with science & technologies studies. She is interested in critical aspects of digital culture, emerging technologies and social change, and in feminist/queer theory. She has written about digital networks and feminism, and recently, on information politics and knowledge production, and on social imaginaries of digital engagement. She currently explores practices of sharing in relation to biosensors and other smart technologies, and also works with Kate to produce SusNet, a co-created platform of feminist cultural production, art and activism. > > Alexandra Juhasz is Professor of Media Studies, Pitzer College. She has written multiple articles on feminist, fake, and AIDS documentary. Her current work is on and about YouTube, and other more radical uses of digital media. She has produced the feature films, The Owls, and The Watermelon Woman, as well as nearly fifteen educational documentaries on feminist issues like teenage sexuality, AIDS, and sex education. Her first book, AIDS TV: Identity, Community and Alternative Video (Duke University Press, 1996) is about the contributions of low-end video production to political organizing and individual and community growth. > > Kate O’Riordan is Reader in Digital Media and Associate Professor of Art at the University of Sussex and the University of California Santa Cruz respectively. She is the author and editor of three books, most recently The Genome Incorporated: Constructing Biodigital Identity. Her interests and expertise range from gender, sexuality and digital culture to human cloning, genomics and other biodigital symptoms. She is currently engaged in work at the intersections of art, science and media about in-vitro meat, biosensors and smart grids and questions about sustaining knowledge in feminist art and activism. > > http://fembotcollective.org/blog/2013/07/09/cfp-ada-issue-4-queer-feminist-… > ------------------------------------

CFP: NATO CCD COE workshop on Ethics of Cyber Conflict: 21-22 November 2013
by Mariarosaria Taddeo 09 Jul '13

09 Jul '13

*Apologies for cross posting* * * *Ethics of Cyber Conflict* *Time:* 21-22 November 2013 *Place:* Rome, Italy *Participation fee:* none In the age of the so-called information revolution, the ability to control, disrupt or manipulate the enemy’s information infrastructure has become as decisive as weapon superiority with respect to determining the outcome of conflicts. So much so that Pentagon’s definition of cyberspace as a new domain in which war is waged, alongside land, sea, air and space, comes as no surprise. The deployment of cyber conflicts as part of a state’s defensive or offensive strategy is a fast growing phenomenon, which is rapidly changing the dynamics of combat as well as the role that warfare plays in political negotiations and the life of civil societies. Such changes are not the exclusive concern of the military, for they also have a bearing on ethicists and policymakers, since existing ethical theories of war, together with national and international regulations, struggle to address the novelties of this phenomenon. The issue could not be more pressing and there is a much felt and fast escalating need to share information and coordinate ethical theorising about cyber conflicts. Contributions to the workshop will address issues concerning the way ICTs are affecting our ethical views of conflicts and warfare, as well as the analysis of just-war principles in the light of the dissemination of cyber conflicts; humanitarian military interventions based on ICTs; whether preventive acts of cyber war may satisfy jus-ad-bellum criteria; challenges of upholding jus-in-bello standards in cyber warfare, especially in asymmetric conflicts; attribution and proportionality of the response to cyber attacks; moral permissibility of automated responses and ethical deployment of military robotic weapons. More details can be found on the workshop website http://ccdcoe.org/428.html . The workshop will be a *two-day event* organised by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and chaired by *Dr Mariarosaria Taddeo*, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Warwick. The event will gather ethicists, experts in military studies, policymakers and experts in cyber security to discuss the ethical problems caused by cyber conflicts. *Submission of Papers:* Authors are required to submit an extended abstract of the planned paper which should describe the topic and set out the main aspects and structure of the research (up to 1000 words). Following a preliminary review and acceptance of the abstract, the authors will be requested to submit the full paper that meets high academic quality, which will be considered for a publication in an international peer-reviewed journal. Submission details are provided on the workshop website. Speakers will be offered travel, transfer from, and to the airport, accommodation for the duration of the event. Submission details, author guidance and other practical information will be made available on the Centre’s website latest by August 2013. *Important Dates *Extended abstracts (1000 words): 9 September 2013 Notification of acceptance: 30 September 2013 Full paper: 07 November 2013 *Registration* is required for this event, please contact events -at- ccdcoe.org *For enquiries about the workshop*, please contact Lt Ludovica Glorioso (ludovica.glorioso -at- ccdcoe.org) or Anna-Maria Talihärm (anna-maria.taliharm -at- ccdcoe.org) -- Dr. Mariarosaria Taddeo Research Fellow in Cyber Security and Ethics, PAIS, University of Warwick Research Associate - Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford http://taddeo.philosophyofinformation.net/index.html

Field notes best practice?
by Katie Derthick 08 Jul '13

08 Jul '13

Hi everybody. I'm about to embark on my dissertation research study, which will include year-long ethnography at 3 different communities. I'm wondering what will be better for me: to have one long field notes document where entries for each community simply appear one after the other, or three separate documents, one for each community. In the end, I'd like to be able to paint a picture of each community, but also make claims about my overarching research goals. I appreciate any advice or insight you have to offer! For the record, I'm studying the relationship between values, meditation practice, and technology use, and looking at a monastery, a meditation center, and a virtual org. Thanks, Katie -- Katie Derthick PhD Candidate Human Centered Design & Engineering University of Washington

Corporate censorship of political discourse?
by Charles Ess 05 Jul '13

05 Jul '13

Dear AoIRists, I've been asked to develop a presentation on the future of freedom of expression in online environments, including discussion of multiple ways in which - in addition to whatever governments may be up to in different contexts and ways - the private enterprises that increasingly dominate and control much of our online spaces and infrastructures censor political speech and expression. One example passed on to me was of a well-established professional in a European country (i.e., not fitting the profile of terrorist, anarchist, or even leftist) who posted comments on his/her SNS page critical of the U.S. These comments disappeared from the page without notice or explanation. I would be very grateful for: 1) recommendations for careful studies of such events and phenomena which include reliable documentation of their occurrence? (Yes, I realize that documenting and studying such episodes would be extremely tricky and difficult.) And/or 2) well documented anecdotes or examples (e.g., as reported in a reliable newspaper of record) of such episodes? Please send these along offlist. I will, of course, more than happily credit the sources and authors of any examples and resources collected and used for the presentation (unless anonymity is requested instead). Many thanks in advance, - charles ess Professor in Media Studies Department of Media and Communication Director, Centre for Research on Media Innovations <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/english/research/center/media-innovations/> University of Oslo P.O.
