Hi gang, Long time lurker, first time author! We're writing a paper that utilizes Tilly's notion of WUNC displays. I was wondering if you would be so kind to share any references that you know of that might specifically link WUNC displays to Twitter or other microblogging activity? I've come across one or two via Google Scholar and other database searches, but I've noticed that searching for Twitter-related research can be kind of a pain now that we're including handles in our bylines. :) Thanks for any help you might be able to provide! Dear AoIR colleagues I am looking for inspiration for a course titled “Media Spaces”, offered in the framework of a BA (Hons), Media, Culture and Society. This module aims to develop a theoretical understanding of the complex and overlapping spaces in which media are produced and consumed as well as understand the spaces that these media create. I appreciate any help regarding good websites, sources, syllabi or textbooks containing case studies. Is anyone teaching something similar who wants to get in touch to exchange ideas? The Sociotechnical Centre for Internationalisation and User Experience (SCIUX) is inviting PhD research proposals in the areas of mHealth, User experience and Internationalisation, and Interaction Design for the Workplace. The topic titles are: -HCI should not be WEIRD! Replicating Studies across Countries and Cultures -Sociotechnical design of mHealth applications in resource-constrained environments -Interaction Design for the Workplace Applications are invited from UK and EU students. Re Understanding Social Media

The EIES system was probably the first real social media system even though it was limited initially to text. Suggest you go back to read the Network Nation form 1978 (reprinted in 1993 by mit press and still available. Roxanne Hiltz wrote a few early paper even before that about social communities on computers. Probably the second system which a group built after using EIES was "The Well" which i think is still around. But a lot of early bulletin boards were clearly social systems and it is amusing that only recently did they finally introduce groups and group discussion in the social media systems which were standard along with many things they have not yet discovered on EIES. EIES and also EMISARI before EIES also had group chats back as early as 1971 for EMISARI. The EMISARI user manual along with all the research reports on EIES experiments and field studies as well design manual are part of an NJIT library online collection. http://library.njit.edu/archives/cccc-materials/index.php By the way the network nation on pages 42-46 talked about and defined "collective intelligent" The first EIES controlled experiment compared face to face and online discussions and actually measured whether "collective intelligence" occurred. Some later work dealt with devising decision support properties for generating "collective intelligence" including the use of Delphi structures. I can send a specific paper summarizing a thesis on that. Roxanne just got the ACM SIGCAS Making a Difference Award for 2012 We both had the following papers on our early work in the following in 2012 and 2013 - Subramanian, R., "Murray Turoff: Father of Computer Conferencing," IEEE Annuals of the History of Computing, IEEE Computer Society, January-March, 2012, pages 2-8 - Subramanian, R., "Starr Roxanne Hiltz: Pioneer Digital Sociologist," IEEE Annuals of the History of Computing, IEEE Computer Society, January-March 2013, pages 78-85 Roxanne's talks about when she submitted her first paper on ASA on social communities on computers the editor refused to send it for reviews because social communities were impossible to exist on computers. After that she published mostly in the computer literature even though she was a sociologist. Those doing research in this area should have a good understanding of where it started! Those teaching a subject should even more know the roots of what they are teaching. My apologies for being late but I wanted to take in all the lucid and cogent comments first. I am grateful this discussion was started because when I received my rejection I was quite frustrated. This was not because my co-author and I were rejected but because the first two reviewers commented on similar strengths and weaknesses, and the third reviewer interrogated our "short paper" line by line (often with snide and passive aggressive remarks), but did not get the point the paper was trying to make. This third reviewer also scored us over 40 points less than the others. This then made me wonder whether there is an accountability to reviewer management? I've never encountered such a review of my work before (whether for a conference or publication). There were many points made in regard to this topic about wanting to encourage speculative and experimental work that showcases rigour but cannot be confined to "data findings" and "sample methods" etc. Our paper was heavily theoretical and trying to push the discourse of Internet Studies in fairly speculative ways that still had a clear object of inquiry. We may have failed at this, but a snide line by line commentary is not helpful to us, especially as young PhD scholars. I'm very much on board with Terri's creative writing workshop that she proposed at the end of her keynote last year because some of us definitely struggle with academic writing. Alas I won't be going to Denver but hopefully there will be another opportunity because writing skills are *not* taught at the graduate level and this doesn't make sense to me.
