[4]CALL FOR PAPERS MINA invites proposals for papers and presentations relating, but not limited to mobile communities, mobile social media and social change, mobile art, mobile locative media, citizen journalism, mobile visual literacy, mobile video production, mobile-mentaries (mobile documentaries), mobile network, mobile media in education and mobile technologies and civic media. This year the circulation of smartphones outnumbered the volume of mobile phones. Most mobile devices (including tablets and pocket size digital cameras) have a HD video capacity and provide Internet connectivity. Since the proliferation of apps five years ago, new opportunities for creative mobile media production emerged. Mobile filmmaking is now an established format ranging from music video to TV commercial production. A number of contemporary apps feature location-based services that can create new experiences and representations of places. Mobile filmmaking also provides prospects for citizen journalist to expand the domain of videography. Contemporary forms of collaborative filmmaking projects connect 21^st century citizens and filmmakers across the globe creating new forms of digital, networked and transmedia storytelling. As an egalitarian filmmaking tool and technology, mobile filmmaking provides access to a new generation of filmmakers. In alignment with the ubiquity of social media, mobile communication is shifting towards an increasingly visual realm. Live streaming and micro formats of mobile filmmaking can be compared to early cinema and actuality film, while mobile short films resonate approaches and practices known from the field of experimental documentary and avant-garde moving-image practices. I have found the following definition and paper to be useful when trying to define 'social media'. “Social Media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content” (Kaplan & Haenlein 2010: 61) They also do a handy "Classification of Social Media by social presence/media richness and self-presentation/self-disclosure" - e.g. blogs are high in self-presentation/self-disclosure, but low in social presence/media richness. There is a strong temptation to sharply distinguish between old and new media, and “broadcasting” (and even “electronic”) is a term that is now often associated with the old. We are constantly told that we are in the midst of a digital/social media revolution that will make the unidirectional, mass communication model obsolete. Yet a cursory glance into either the history of media technology or the contemporary use of new media platforms complicates these dominant narratives. Do we need new terms to help us think about what it means for new media to come of age, or do we need to reappropriate old terms? Do ideas about new media revolutions help us better understand the complicated relationships between radio and early television programming, telegraph networks and emerging telephone infrastructure, or musicians and the various shifts in the recording industry? Do notions of social media disruptions help us understand how participation takes place in sites like Wikipedia, reddit, or YouTube, or how these sites are situated in relation to more established news and media industries? What is the relevance of “old media” terms such as “broadcasting” for studying today’s social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, and Pinterest? We call on graduate students to start a new thread in the conversation about what it means for media to be old and new. For us, rethinking “broadcasting” in an era of electronic media is to neither hastily disregard the legacy of these terms nor cling to them too rigidly. As graduate students, we feel a curious resonance with the contradictory expectations surrounding new media forms. We are called to be apprentices, learning to participate in a longstanding and well-established institution; yet at the same time we are called to be radical revolutionaries, disrupting old ways of thinking. Graduate students, like many new media services and platforms, face many anxieties about what it means to come of age in a landscape already filled with towering figures. Many of the issues we face are longstanding problems that every generation before us also confronted, but we also face many concerns that are unique to our current historical situation. As emerging scholars, we believe that graduate students are uniquely situated to change the conversation around new and old media, rethinking both what it means for media to come of age and how to study such a phenomenon. In this special issue, we call on graduate students to redefine what “broadcasting” means and explore the relevance of this term in an age of electronic media. We intentionally leave this open to interpretation. We seek papers that will theoretically and empirically advance our understanding of the diverse array of practices, content, people, technologies, industries, and policies that collectively constitute our contemporary media ecology. We call for papers from a wide variety of disciplines and interdisciplinary fields, recognizing that scholarship can take a variety of different forms. Although collaborative work with non-graduate students is acceptable, we seek papers that are primarily conceptualized and authored by graduate students. Collaborative work with other students is highly encouraged. Importantly, the corresponding, lead author–who will be responsible for the paper and interactions with the editors–must be a graduate student. Because we anticipate a large number of submissions, we will not initially accept full papers for review. Interested authors must first send a proposal of their paper in an extended abstract format of 600-800 words, not including references. The extended abstract should clearly introduce and outline the paper, giving reviewers from a wide variety of academic fields enough context and detail to evaluate its feasibility as a full paper, intellectual merit, relevance to the special issue theme, and broader impacts. As the research for these papers may not yet be complete, we do not expect that extended abstracts will necessarily include all of the paper’s findings or conclusions. However, the extended abstracts should outline what kinds of findings or conclusions the authors expect to present in the final paper. Specifically, extended abstracts should include: - a title - a description of the paper’s core topic, case, problem, and/or argument - the methodological approach, theoretical background, and/or disciplinary field - the paper’s relevance to related academic literatures - expected findings or conclusions - expected contributions to the study of media Extended abstracts must be mailed as an attachment to JOBEMgradIssue(a)gmail.com and must be sent in .rtf, .doc or .docx format. Prodnik, Sebastian Sevignani, Thomas Allmer In 1845, Karl Marx (1845, 571) formulated in the 11th Feuerbach Thesis: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it”. Today, interpretation of the world has become an important form of labour that is expressed on and with the help of digital media. It has therefore become common to talk about digital labour and virtual work. Yet the changes that digital, social and mobile media bring about in the world of labour and work have thus far only been little theorized and theoretically interpreted. In order to change the information society to the better, we first have to interpret digital labour with the help of critical theories. Theorists of the world from different fields, backgrounds, interdisciplines, transdisciplines and disciplines have to unite for this collective philosophical task. The overall task of this special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique is to gather contributions that help to an understanding of how to critically theorize digital labour, virtual work and related concepts. Theorizing digital labour requires us to provide grounded 1) definitions of digital labour and virtual work, 2) systematic distinctions and typologies of forms of digital labour and 3) theorizing the transformations that digital labour is undergoing. All submitted papers should be theoretical and profoundly engage with the meanings of various concepts. Rather than presenting case studies, papers should focus on fundamental theoretical concepts and discuss definitions. They can also explore the relations between concepts, the historical development of these concepts, typologies and the relevance of different theoretical approaches. The special issue is interested in theorizing the broader picture of digital labour. We welcome submissions that cover one or more of the following or related questions. 1) Concepts of Labour * How should concepts such of work and labour be defined and what are the implications of these definitions for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * Which theoretical or philosophical definitions of work and labour exist and which of them are meaningful for understanding virtual work and digital labour? * What is the difference between labour and digital labour? What is part of digital labour and what is not? Which online, offline, knowledge, physical, industrial, agricultural etc forms of work are part of it or not part of it? Is digital labour only knowledge labour that happens online or do we have to extend the concept to the offline realms and physical labour? Where is the demarcation line? Is digital labour also labour where digital technologies are of vast importance or not? Does digital labour involve the physical forms of work necessary for producing digital labour? * Is there a difference between 'work' and 'labour' and if so, how does it matter for the discussion of digital labour and virtual work? * What is the role of Karl Marx’ theory of labour and surplus value for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * Is the traditional distinction between the material base and superstructure in the realm of social media and digital labour still valid or does it become blurred or undermined? Are new information and communication technologies and social media, their production and use (n)either part of the base (n)or the superstructure or are they part of both? *If in the agricultural and industrial age land and nature have been the traditional objects of labour, how do the objects of labour and productive forces look like in the world of digital media and digital labour and how are these productive forces linked to class relations? * What is meant by concepts such as digital labour, telework, virtual work, cyberwork, immaterial labour, knowledge labour, creative work, cultural labour, communicative labour, informational work, digital craft, service work, prosumption, consumption work, online work, audience labour, playbour (play labour) in the context of digital media? How should they be defined? How are they related? How have they developed historically? How are these concepts related to the wider social context and the existing capitalist order? How can a systematic typology of the existing literature in this research field be constructed? Should any of these concepts be rejected? Why? Why not? Do any of these concepts especially matter? If so, why? * What is the etymological history of concepts such as work and labour in different languages and how have these concepts changed throughout history? Which of these historically different meanings are important for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * What are historically new aspects of digital labour, what are predecessors of digital work and which aspects of digital labour have parallels to the pre-digital era? * What is the role of the concept of value for understanding digital labour and virtual work as well as “immaterial” labour, affective labour, knowledge/communicative/information work etc in the context of digital media? 2) Forms of Labour * What is the role of agricultural, industrial, service and knowledge work in the world of digital labour and how are they related? How are different modes of production related to each other in the world of digital labour? * What are the important dimensions for constructing a typology of work that takes place in online spaces (e.g. crowdsourcing, online gambling, gold farming, turking, microwork, production of and trade with virtual items, clickwork etc)? * How can a typology of alternative forms of online work that rejects the profit logic be constructed (e.g. free software development, creative commons and copyleft publishing, Wikipedia collaboration, peer-production, open access publishing, file sharing etc)? * Which forms of labour are involved in the global value chain of digital media, how do they differ from each other and how are they related (e.g. mining, hardware assemblage, call centre work, software engineering, transport labour, prosumer labour, e-waste labour etc)? 3) Transformations of Labour * How can blurring boundaries between toil and play, labour and leisure time, the factory and society, production and consumption, public and private, the sphere of production and reproduction, economic value and social wealth in the realm of digital media be conceptualized? * What is the relationship between creativity, participation, do-it-yourself culture on the one hand and exploitation, alienation and/or emancipation on the other hand? * What is the role of the concepts of the working class and the proletariat for theorizing digital labour? * How would the concepts of digital work and digital labour look like in a post-capitalist society? Does the post-capitalist end of the working class also mean the end of and abolition of digital work? Or just the end of digital labour? What are the anthropologically constant and the historically variable dimensions of productive human activities? How should they be conceptualized and named? How are they related to the realm of digital media? Do concepts such as anti-work, zerowork, the abolition of work, post-work and the right to be lazy take the anthropological, creative and productive aspects of human life that are expressed on digital media into account? What are the elements of digital media activities that will continue to exist in a post-capitalist society? What are the historically continuous and discontinuous elements of digital labour? * What has historically been the role of communications – including digital communications – in labour transformations and in the construction of global labour chains (e.g. global division of labour and social interdependencies; the concept of collective worker / Gesamtarbeiter; socialization of labour etc.)? Teaching: Understanding Social Media

Hello colleagues, Michael Glassman asked: "I wonder if people have thought about throwing out written materials and treating social media not only as the topic but as the means of the course?" I did something like that for a Masters level business course called "Leadership and New Media Communication." Before starting on the electronic communications, we first spent some time on general foundations of business/organizational communication-- and we used a text for those readings. Beyond that, some (electronic of course) articles for course readings to expose them to research/writings about the kinds of communications media they were experiencing. Throughout the term assignments asked them to look for, analyze, compare and share with peers exemplars of new/social media representing different genres of business communication. But at the heart of the course was an experiential project. Each person chose a (free) place to develop a course-long project. Since it was "new media" rather than "social media" the project options were defined broadly to include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, Second Life. They were given a series of "communication challenge" assignments, which they'd implement on their project site. The course was offered online in Blackboard, so we had as our home base the online discussion area. They'd post links to their projects, and go visit, comment on and critique their peers' projects. A big part of the discussion centered on what online communications approaches were effective for what kinds of tasks or business objectives. At the end of the term, they presented what they'd done and learned using Adobe Connect, with some peers there live to discuss it. The link to the presentation was also posted in the class discussion, and they were required to watch and give feedback to peers. They did submit a short paper describing the background reading etc. for the project, but nearly all of the work for this course walked the talk, with a very rich online practice, exchange and analysis. I proposed a series of social media courses for the undergraduate programme at my department. This is how I organized the introductory-level course "Web 2.0 and Social Media": 1 Introduction to Web 2.0 and Social Media - media, technological and cultural characteristics 2 Communicating, Interacting, Sharing - online communities, blogging, social network sites, etc. 3 Searching, Playing, Entertaining - social games, virtual worlds, e-health, cyber dating/sexuality, etc. 4 Targeting, Listening, Engaging - data mining, word-of-mouth marketing, digital communication management, etc. 5 Social and Ethical Issues - privacy, social movements, consumer activism, etc. After taking this course, students have a choice of two intermediate-level social media courses related to their specific specialization (PR or advertising) and an advanced-level course on "Research using Social Media".
