Job: Research Assistant in NYC area
by Alice E. Marwick 24 Jul '13

24 Jul '13

RESEARCH ASSISTANT NEEDED FOR FALL I’m looking for a research assistant to help me with ongoing academic projects and some fall substitute teaching while I’m traveling. I’m working on a new major project around online sexist hate speech and misogyny. The RAwould do some literature reviews, online data collection/coding, help schedule interviews, paperwork, possibly accompany me to interviews, etc. I am traveling a ton in the fall and teaching two internet-related undergraduate classes, so the ideal candidate could also cover those classes for me while I’m out of town. (Classes are 9/16, 10/24, 10/28, 11/21 in the morning at the Rose Hill campus in the Bronx). ME: Assistant professor at Fordham University in Communication and Media Studies. My work looks at the impact of the internet on identity, self-presentation, and social interaction. More: http://www.tiara.org. YOU: Should be a PhD student in Communications, Media Studies, Information Studies or similar with a solid interest in internet studies. I prefer someone who leans more towards the qualitative social science side than the quant or humanities side, but am flexible. Interest in gender studies a big plus. MUST BE in the greater NYC area. DETAILS: $18 an hour pre-tax. I currently have funding for 80 hours, possibly more to come. I would like the candidate to start late summer and continue into the fall. Work will be billed hourly. Most work will be done remotely aside from the substitute teaching. Fordham’s campus is in the Bronx; it’s a schlep up to Rose Hill but not too bad on Metro-North. If we need to meet in person, it will be somewhere in Manhattan since I live downtown. Unfortunately, Fordham requires a drug test and background check. There’s nothing I can do about this, so if you’re not comfortable with such, please do not apply. Please send CV and writing sample (preferably a literature review or a journal-length article with a lit review) to amarwick(a)gmail.com. Put “research assistant” in the subject line. -- Alice E. Marwick, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Communication and Media Studies Fordham University (718) 817-4861 amarwick(a)fordham.edu http://www.tiara.org http://www.socialmediacollective.org

IR14: Earlybird, Hotel, Best Student Paper
by Alexander Halavais 23 Jul '13

23 Jul '13

tl;dr: * August 1 is the last day to register at the earlybird rate (and presenters' registration deadline). * Please reserve your room at the Westin * Matthew Crain wins the Best Student Paper award for the conference I hope you are all as excited about the upcoming IR14 conference in Denver as I am. I think we have a great line-up. As a reminder, the earlybird registration deadline--August 1--is rapidly approaching. Please note that if you become a member before registering, your total cost is less than if you register as a non-member. Also, if you are a presenter at the conference, you *must* register by August 1 so that we know you are coming. I'll make a plea for reserving at the conference hotel, the Westin Denver Downtown. Details on reserving your room can be found here: http://ir14.aoir.org/venue/ We budget around expected attendance at the hotel, and if we fail to meet our quota (as occurred in Seattle) we incur substantial penalties. So registering at the conference hotel is not only convenient for the conference, but a good way to make sure the conference remains economically sustainable. Some have encountered issues with the registration site saying that there are no more rooms available at the conference rate. If this happens, it may be that the conference rate is sold out for the Tuesday night only. We will continue to lift that number as possible, but we had not anticipated so many pre-conference attendees. In any case, that should not be an issue at present, but if we run through that allotment again, you may need to do a separate reservation for Tuesday night and for the the remaining conference nights. Last and best, we are happy to announce the best student paper for this year. Matthew Crain, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will be presenting "Financial Markets and Online Advertising Demand: Reevaluating the Dotcom Investment Bubble." The conference committee found his work to be promising and innovative, and I am looking forward to attending his presentation--and many others--this October. Best, Alex Halavais

Call for Abstracts - Edited Collection on Games, Play, and Education
by Gerald Voorhees 22 Jul '13

22 Jul '13

I'm distributing this for a friend and colleague. Please direct inquiries and submissions to Josh Call jcall(a)grandview.edu or David Petroski petroskid1(a)southernct.edu. <petroskid1(a)southernct.edu> Call for Abstracts- Edited Collection on Games, Play, and Education "Playing to Learn; Learning from Play: Pedagogy and the Promise of Games" Much has been made recently of the connections between games and play, and the potential for generating positive learning environments. This edited collection, provisionally titled, "Playing to Learn, Learning from Play: Pedagogy and the Promise of Games" is designed for a broad academic audience and will feature essays and empirical research that either examine specific games or consider the function of play relative to pedagogical practice. We invite scholars and teachers to contribute to this edited collection of contributions exploring the connection between games, play, and education. This text imagines these elements broadly, and in multiple genres (digital games, social games, analog games, general play, etc.) Tentatively, we imagine the text being framed by the following two sections: *Theory*- This section will included critical scholarship on the potential for games and play as learning devices. Contributions should focus on the potential for learning as theoretically grounded concept focused on a specific game or play experience. *Practice*- This section will focus on practical applications of games and play to learning environments. Contributions should focus on presenting effective models of games and play as praxis elements relative to curricular design. Submissions from all academic disciplines and geographic regions are invited. The collection aims to advance theory and criticism by bringing different voices and perspectives into conversation. However, each section will be guided by its central framework, to bring theory and practice into conversation. All contributions must be the original work of the author and cannot be published elsewhere, unless author retains copyrights. For co-authored essays, all authors must agree to submission of work. For consideration, please send an abstract to jcall(a)grandview.edu by Oct 15th, 2013. Abstracts should be 500-750 words and must outline a theoretically grounded approach or pedagogical implementation of a specific game, set of games, or gamification framework. Submissions should include full contact information and institutional affiliation. Acceptance of abstracts will be determined by Dec. 1st, 2013. Final completed essays should be 7000 words (including notes and references) and Bloomsbury uses Chicago Manual of Style for references. Reprints will be considered on a case by case basis. Questions can be directed to the editors at: Josh Call- jcall(a)grandview.edu David Petroski- petroskid1(a)southernct.edu

Re: [Air-L] Issues with Facebook's "graph search"? (Nicholas John)
by Simon Knight 21 Jul '13

21 Jul '13

Hi Nicholas I don't know how it's being sampled, but I did write some thoughts/bullet points about risks/potentials of such a tool a while ago http://people.kmi.open.ac.uk/knight/2013/01/evaluating-facebook-graph-search -as-an-epistemic-tool/ which included a link to Brian Kelly's post on its potential for research developments (how universities might use it for example). Given the social, and economic factors potentially involved as graph search develops I'm not sure I'd use it as a reliable/valid indicator of taste. Be interested to see if anyone has already done some work on it/is planning to. Cheers Simon @sjgknight <http://twitter.com/sjgknight> ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2013 11:19:17 +0300 From: Nicholas John <n.john(a)huji.ac.il> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Subject: [Air-L] Issues with Facebook's "graph search"? Message-ID: <CAN=3fvoqFcphRUUJGmB8oRTpGYsw9DH5-MTAy9JUAfE_z10tmw(a)mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Hi all, I've just been messing about a bit with Facebook's graph search. According to it, the music liked by people who like Obama is different from the music liked by people who like Romney. Who'd have thunk it? (Richard Rogers<http://www.govcom.org/publications/full_list/rogers_post-demographics _22Feb2009_withimages.pdf>did this with Obama, McCain and MySpace using ElFriendo, so he at the very least already did.) But does anyone here actually know anything concrete about graph search and its reliability and validity as a measurer of taste? Does anyone know how Facebook is doing it? Is it sampling friends of Obama, or actually looking at all of them and then showing me what music they like? Obviously I'm not about to launch a huge research project based on results from Facebook's graph search, or even a small one for that matter, but perhaps we could think a bit about whether it might have any use for us as researchers at all, Nik ____________ Nicholas John<https://sites.google.com/site/smarthuji/people/faculty/dr-nicholas-john > Assistant Professor Department of Communication, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Tel: +972-54-7906073 @nicholasajohn
