Lit on teacher use, engagement w/digital learning tools
by Margaret Weigel 31 Jul '13

31 Jul '13

Hi, list. I'm searching for research on teacher engagement with digital learning tools, i.e. how well they like these tools and the extent to which they tend to engage with features like rating content, collaborating online with other teachers and classrooms, etc. Any suggestions are much appreciated; send them to the list, or to my email address below. Thank you in advance. Margaret Weigel mweigel (at) alum.mit.edu ______________________

CFP: Comparative Internet Histories (edited collection)
by Jean Burgess 31 Jul '13

31 Jul '13

Comparative Internet Histories Gerard Goggin and Mark McLelland (editors) Overview Although the Internet is entering its fifth decade, the understanding and formulation of its histories outside of a Euro-American framework is very much in its infancy. In this collection, which arises from a workshop at the 2013 Association of Internet Researchers Conference: http://ir14.aoir.org/preconference-workshop-appropriating-the-internet-alte…, contributors explore some of the problems, questions, methods, biases, narratives, and metaphors that underlie research into the Internet’s diverse histories. Given that “the Internet” is so often spoken of as a “global” and “deterritorialised” technology, it might be supposed that specific cultures of use can be replicated anywhere that has Internet connectivity. Yet what Internet technologies are available and preferred depends upon cultural factors as well as market and policy factors such as government regulation, competition between providers, and pricing. In its current phase of development -- often approached through ideologies and discourses such as “web 2.0,” “convergence culture,” and “user-generated content” -- the Internet is dominated by social networking systems (SNS) and a focus on users’ role in production as well as consumption. Far from one SNS dominating globally, however, the rise of this technology has been multiple and divergent, reflecting the localized adaptations of the Internet. To grasp the significance of web 2.0 features requires an acknowledgement of the existing media cultures influential upon users, as well as the effects of industry, policy, and social contexts, and the ways that imported – and local – technologies are being domesticated. The localised Internet histories that are emerging, and continue to evolve, need to be investigated through a cultural history of the development of the various aspects of the Internet in different regions and social contexts. This is evident in early applications such as email, BBS, and text-based online communities, through the adoption of the web and the rise of mass Internet, as well as more recent technologies such as blogs, SNS, and mobile and wireless technologies. This collection brings together researchers working on country-specific and regional histories of the Internet as well as those researching transnational platforms and communities, thus adding to our understanding of the different historical patterns of Internet development and deployment. Existing chapters “Doing Internet Histories” Gerard Goggin (University of Sydney) “Oral Histories of the Net: Australians Tell the Story of their ‘Connection’ via the Internet” Matthew Allen (Deakin University) “A Decade of ‘Social Media’ and what to Do about It: Methodological Challenges of Historicising the Proprietary Web” Jean Burgess (Queensland University of Technology) “The Forgotten Foreign Phase: Early BBS Systems in Japan” Mark McLelland (University of Wollongong) “Challenging the Net: Japanese Political Campaigns and the Internet 1995 to 2013” Leslie M. How do these factors differ across societies? • What are the implication of specific cultural metaphors and ways of thinking about the Internet for the technology’s development in specific countries and regions outside North America and Western Europe? • Forgotten phases of the Internet – important developments that have not been recorded in mainstream accounts Internet history. • Internet histories outside of North America and Western Europe. • The oral history of the net outside of North America and Western Europe. • The Internet and Social Activism outside of North America and Western Europe. Please send a brief bio, proposed title and a 250 word abstract to Mark McLelland (markmc(a)uow.edu.au) by 4 November 2013. Already coming to AoIR 2013? CFP Journalism Theory Practice and Criticism, special issue on The Objects of Journalism
by Nancy Baym 30 Jul '13

30 Jul '13

Call for papers Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism Special issue The Objects of Journalism: Media, Materiality and the News Guest editors: C.W. Anderson (heychanders(a)gmail.com) & Juliette De Maeyer (jdemaeyer(a)gmail.com) Submission deadline: September 30, 2013 (abstracts) and January 15, 2014 (completed papers) Studying the ³objects of journalism² involves looking at the role of actual things in the journalistic production process. Without denying the existence of overarching economic, organizational, ideological, symbolic or cultural forces, the approach advocated in this special issue explores the material objects, sometimes seemingly innocuous or univocal, that are involved in news production, reception and distribution. Drawing on the conversations that took place during the 2013 ICA Pre-Conference « The Objects of Journalism: Media, Materiality and the News », this special issue is an attempt to further uncover and problematize the concrete materiality of journalism. Doing so requires us to think afresh about the ontologies of journalism studies, our research methods and the specific problems we decide to investigate. The special issue welcomes papers that: * Emphasize the socio-historical depth of journalistic objects, allowing us to think about up-to-the-minute aspects of modern newsmaking without being stuck in the contemplation of their alleged novelty. Examples might include papers examining digital artifacts (such as lines of code, hyperlinks, databases, APIs, CMS, algorithms, softwares, etc.) and discussing them in the context of other non-digital artifacts. * Provide critical reflection for choosing this modus operandi over other classic journalism studies approaches, and distinguish how specifically a material approach to journalism studies might relate to other disciplines or fields that have already embraced a « material turn ». * Tackle philosophical and theoretical questions involving ³new materialist² ontologies and epistemologies, and attempt to integrate practices in journalism with already existing thinking on assemblage theory (DeLanda), actor-network theory (Latour) or object-oriented ontology. * Rethink methodologies ‹ how do we understand what it means to do a materially-minded ethnography? Content analysis? Social network map? Have our methods always been material in this way? Or is there something new here? * Perspectives ‹ whether theoretical, sociological, cultural, economic, or historical ‹ that dispute the advisability or existence of a material turn. In other words, we encourage papers that dispute the thrust, premises or underlying assumptions of the special issue. * Any other topics of relevance to the general theme of the special issue. Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 300 words by email to both C.W. Anderson (heychanders(a)gmail.com) and Juliette De Maeyer (jdemaeyer(a)gmail.com) All submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the special issue editors. Successful authors will be invited to submit a full manuscript according to the journal¹s Notes for Contributors <http://www.uk.sagepub.com/journalsProdDesc.nav?prodId=Journal200905&ct_p=m anuscriptSubmission&crossRegion=eur>. All papers will be subjected to peer review. Timeline Deadline for abstracts: September 30, 2013 ; deadline for submission of articles: January 15, 2014 Publication: 2014

by Laura Henderson 30 Jul '13

30 Jul '13

*Internet Policy Observatory: Call For Proposals* The Center for Global Communication Studies (CGCS) at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, announces a call for proposals under its Internet Policy Observatory (IPO). One of the goals of IPO is helping to develop a broad understanding of the conditions, processes and stakeholders that drive the development of Internet policies in pivotal countries, and of how those conditions influence developments at the regional and international levels. Proposals should address one or both of the two RFPs described below: * Internet Policy Observatory Regional Hub Grants * Internet Policy Observatory Thematic Grants *Internet Policy Observatory - Regional Hub Grant* The objective of this Call is to add to a global network of Regional Hubs supporting Internet policy research with specific regional perspectives. The purpose of these grants is to encourage research from a variety of disciplines to help further understanding on how global Internet policies evolve. This Call is open to persons and organizations who are particularly interested in Internet policy research, and who are based in countries that are located within (1) Latin America & Caribbean, (2) Middle-East and North Africa[1], (3) South & South-East Asia[2] / Pacific (4) Central Asia[3](5) East Asia[4] (6) Sub-Saharan Africa. Research groups, universities, and civil society organizations which already have research programs on Internet policy issues in the relevant countries and regions are particularly encouraged to apply. Beneficiaries of related, but different grants awarded under the Internet Policy Observatory may also apply to this call. Eligible proposals should address four core deliverables (Please view the full RFP for complete descriptions of deliverables): 1. Hub Study: The Internet Policy Observatory welcomes proposals that seek to investigate Internet policy issues within specific countries within a region, or alternatively the region as a whole. Potential topics to consider range across the wider field of Internet policy, including, but are not limited to, issues of Internet governance, Internet filtration and censorship, implications of military and security services activities and concerns on policy development, to name but a few examples. 2. Hub Survey: Proposals should speak to the organization's capacity to carry out qualitative and quantitative research. As part of the Internet Policy Observatory's effort to create a global Delphi (expert) survey on Internet policy formation, organizations will be expected to incorporate a strategy for the creation and implementation of regional surveys. 3. Hub View: A key task of the Regional Hubs is to regularly provide news on Internet-policy-relevant developments within their region to the IPO website. 4. Hub Action: Each Regional Hub should also propose further, regional specific activity - such as local conferences or workshops - that can be financed directly from the Grant or might be financed from other sources. Grants are expected to be USD 20,000-40,000 per application selected. Applications should be submitted by 5pm EST on September 15, 2013. Inquiry: graduate student scholarship/fellowship opportunities
by Mathew Gagne 28 Jul '13

28 Jul '13

Dear colleagues, I am a PhD student in anthropology at the University of Toronto, preparing to enter my fieldwork phase. My dissertation is about the impact of gay dating technologies (Grindr/Scruff/Growler) and websites (manjam.com) on the formation of queer sociality and subjectivity in Beirut, Lebanon. I am looking for scholarship and fellowship opportunities both for the more immediate future, but also once I am in the writing phase. Given the range of members on the list, I am hoping that you all might lend a hand. Would you share any fellowship or scholarship opportunities that your respective centres, institutes, and organization offer? They don't only need to be those offered in the very near future. I hope this does not appear as overly solicitous. I would be happy to collect and organize your responses, then send them back to the list. It would likely produce a useful resource for all of us. Best Regards, Mathew Gagné ***** Ph.D. Student Department of Anthropology University of Toronto http://utoronto.academia.edu/MathewGagne

CFP> 9th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: The Social Informatics of Information Boundaries
by Howard Rosenbaum 25 Jul '13

25 Jul '13

Second Call for Papers and Participation: The 9th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: The Social Informatics of Information Boundaries Sponsored by: ASIS&T SIG Social Informatics and Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics, Indiana University Saturday, November 2, 2013, 8:30-12:30 PM Centre Sheraton, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Organizers: Howard Rosenbaum and Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University The purpose of this ASIST pre-conference research symposium is to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. This year, as we observe the 10th year since the passing of Rob Kling, we are particularly interested in papers that advance social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding. We are interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. This year’s conference theme is “Beyond the Cloud: Rethinking Information Boundaries.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium theme is “the social informatics of information boundaries.” We are soliciting work that focuses on the critical analysis of the concept of information boundaries and boundary work from a Social Informatics perspective. Questions motivating the research could include (but are not limited to): - What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of information boundaries, boundary crossing, and boundary work? - What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain information boundaries and boundary work? - How do the social, technological, and informational boundaries evolve and shape each other? - How and to what extent can we enhance our understanding of information boundaries by drawing on sociological, organizational, and other social science theories? The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2012 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. Deadlines: August 9, 2013: Submit a short paper (2000 words), a poster (500 words), or a panel (1000 words) by email to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu) and Pnina Fichman (fichman(a)indiana.edu) September 2, 2013: Author notifications (in time for conference early registration (NOTE: this timeline may be adjusted when the registration dates are announced). Fees: Members $90 - early registration ($110 after early registration ends) Non-members $110 - early registration ($130 after early registration ends)
