As a result, */globally distributed virtual teams /*now support the work of organizations across the spectrum of products and services. Such teams are used by a range of for-profit and non-profit organizations including businesses, government organizations, the military, and educational institutions. These organizations are increasingly employing individuals located in different nations to engage in various types of collaborative work via ICTs. As a result of such factors, much of the */modern workforce /*is now migrating toward a virtual model of work, and forces associated with globalization are changing the nature of competitiveness in the new economy. */Individuals/*, in turn, must often adapt rapidly to virtual environments and do so with little or no formal preparation in the types of professional communication practices essential to success in such contexts. As a result, individuals working in internationally distributed teams must generally learn from their mistakes, an effective but often costly approach. Moreover, individuals must also often adapt to working in an environment in which they are regularly paired with new colleagues and clients from different nations, cultures, and language groups. Thus, the modern distributed workplace requires employees to account for and address three central factors---*/technology, culture, and language/*---in order to succeed in most work-related tasks. An all-important question arising from this situation is, */"How can we better prepare these individuals for this international, online context?" /* A 2012 /IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication /special issue on global training reveals, however, that very little information on training---particularly global virtual communication training---has been published in the major professional communication journals in the last ten years. Such a gap needs to be closed if educators and trainers alike wish to prepare adult learners to be successful participants in current (and future) business practices and processes. This special issue on education and training for globally distributed virtual teams seeks to address this topic through */articles on how best to prepare individuals to succeed in this new workplace/*. In particular, the editors are interested in articles that answer questions such as: . What types of education and training are most desired by managers and participants of global virtual teams? . How can organizations best prepare virtual team members for working across boundaries of language? What issues affect translation and terminology? What do team members most need to know about World Englishes, English as a Second Language, or English for Specific Purposes? . How can organizations better prepare employees to collaborate and cooperate online and across cultural boundaries? . How can social media be used to prepare individuals for working in intercultural online contexts? . What legal issues can affect or should be included in global virtual team training? What should participants in global virtual teams know about proprietary information and privacy? In addition, the editors of this special issue welcome articles such as: . Critical analyses of the many published task/technology models that support global virtual teams. . Critical analyses of virtual team studies in areas such as technical training, adult education, human resources development, educational technology, human performance technology, technical communication, and user experience design. The guest editors are also interested in discussing other prospective topics with potential contributors. Types of articles /connexions /publishes four types of articles: . Original research articles of 5,000 to 7,000 words in length . Review articles of 3,000 to 5,000 words in length . Focused commentary and industry perspectives articles of 500 to 3,000 words in length . Yeshua-Katz Winner of Couch Award

Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Award is presented annually by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) and recognizes excellent student-authored papers. Yeshua-Katz's paper, "Beyond the Backstage: Boundary Work in the Pro-ana Community" explores blogs in an online community for people with eating disorders. Her work reveals that in order to protect these virtual groups and resist the stigma associated with their illness, bloggers construct their own unique norms and rules. Because of an unusually large number of high-quality entries this year, the Award committee selected two additional papers for "Honorable Mention." Alex Leavitt, a Ph.D. student in the Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism at the University of Southern California received Honorable Mention for his paper, "No Copyright Infringement Intended: Emergent discourses in networked media sharing." Also, Elisabeth Montemurro, a graduate student in the School of Communication at Loyola University received Honorable Mention for her paper, "Interacting with #BindersFullofWomen." The Couch Award was established in 2002 as the centerpiece of an extensive awards program. Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines, and winners are selected by a committee of university professors. The winner will receive a cash award as well as the opportunity to present her paper at an international conference. This year’s award will be presented at the annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in Denver, Colo., October 23-26. The Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research is a non-profit organization established to promote the scholarship of the late Carl J. Couch and his academic associates. Carey Media Research Award competition sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research (www.cccsir.com) Wallis is author of the book, Technomobility in China: Young Migrant Women and Mobile Phones, published in January by New York University Press. The Carey Award, established in 2004, is presented annually from among nominated or submitted books or journal articles published in the previous year. The award honors the late Dr. James W. Carey (1934-2006). Dr. Carey was recognized as one of the North American pioneers in applying cultural approaches to the study of mass media. To be worthy of the award, the work must be of highest quality and employ Carey's theories to focus on communication and public life, journalism, or popular culture. The winning entry this year was chosen from an exceptionally strong field of works submitted by a long list of outstanding scholars. "Wallis explores the way in which the cell phone has been integrated into the transforming social structures and practices of contemporary China, and the ways in which mobile technology enables rural young women -- a population that has been traditionally marginalized and deemed as 'backward' and 'other' -- to participate in and create culture." A member of the review committee commented, "I appreciated Wallis's demonstration that technology, social relations, and personal identity must always be considered together. This is a way of thinking about technology that I think would resonate with Carey." Welcome to M4D2014 The 4th International Conference on Mobile Communication for Development (M4D) Dakar, Senegal, 8-9 April 2014 University Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) in co-operation with HumanIT, Karlstad University 2nd call M4D2014 This conference is the fourth in the M4D biennial series following the inaugural conference in Karlstad, Sweden in 2008. The 2nd conference was in Kampala, Uganda in 2010 and the 3rd in New Delhi, India in 2012. M4D2014 aims to provide a forum for researchers, practitioners and all those with interests in the use, evaluation, and theorizing of Mobile Communication for Development. M4D2014 will combine two days of plenary peer-reviewed paper sessions, workshops, panel sessions, discussion forums, and demos. How to Participate? M4D2014 welcomes participants from academia, industry, NGOs, development agencies, and governmental and international organizations. If you want to submit a paper, there are two different options. Research papers (8-12 pages including references) will be peer reviewed and evaluated based on theory craftsmanship and analytical rigor. Articles considering critical approaches and theoretical development will be prioritized. The practitioner’s track is open to practitioners to present their experiences, cases and policies (4-5 pages). These contributions do not have to be guided by academic theory and critical analysis. All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings and allocated a presentation slot. You can also participate by organizing a workshop. Workshops submissions for proceedings (2 pages) must contain: title, organizers with affiliation, participants, motivation and objectives. Finally, there is also the possibility to submit a poster or a demo (1-page extended abstract). Poster size max. 80x120 cm. Roll-ups are also allowed. If you are at all interested in supporting collaboration between non-profits and universities, particularly J-Schools, please consider signing our petition<http://www.thepetitionsite.com/999/807/696/support-for-the-wisconsin-center…> . http://www.thepetitionsite.com/999/807/696/support-for-the-wisconsin-center… The Wisconsin GOP have targeted our non-partisan, non-profit Center for Investigative Journalism <http://www.wisconsinwatch.org/>, housed in our School of Journalism & Mass Communication. They occupy two tiny rooms in our department, receive no money from the state, and are transparent about all of their funding sources (http://www.wisconsinwatch.org/) They work with our students, teach them as interns, lecture in our classes, and collaborate on investigative projects. On Wednesday June 5, the following amendment was added to Wisconsin's pending budget bill: *Center for Investigative Journalism. Prohibit the Board of Regents from permitting the Center for Investigative Journalism to occupy any facilities owned or leased by the Board of Regents. In addition, prohibit UW employees from doing any work related to the Center for Investigative Journalism as part of their duties as a UW employee.* The School of Journalism & Mass Communication vehemently opposes this provision, not only because it prohibits a successful, productive, and award-winning collaboration in research, teaching, and service having clear and overwhelming benefits for both our students and the residents of the state, but also because it represents a serious threat to shared governance and academic freedom. We also believe this to have serious First Amendment infringements as well as to hold implications for other non-profit collaborations across the university system. *In addition, we worry about the precedence this will set for the large number of other universities with similar investigative centers and non-profit partnerships! * The bill soon goes to the governor and we are hoping he will veto this line item. Please consider making it known there is broad support for collaboration between universities and non-profits, and sign this petition. Also, if you could distribute widely, we'd appreciate it! First Call for Papers and Participation: The 9th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: The Social Informatics of Information Boundaries Sponsored by: ASIS&T SIG Social Informatics and Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics, Indiana University Saturday, November 2, 2013, 8:30-12:30 PM Centre Sheraton, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Organizers: Howard Rosenbaum and Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University The purpose of this ASIST pre-conference research symposium is to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. This year, as we observe the 10th year since the passing of Rob Kling, we are particularly interested in papers that advance social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding. We are interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. This year’s conference theme is “Beyond the Cloud: Rethinking Information Boundaries.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium theme is “the social informatics of information boundaries.” We are soliciting work that focuses on the critical analysis of the concept of information boundaries and boundary work from a Social Informatics perspective. Questions motivating the research could include (but are not limited to): - What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of information boundaries, boundary crossing, and boundary work? - What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain information boundaries and boundary work? - How do the social, technological, and informational boundaries evolve and shape each other? - How and to what extent can we enhance our understanding of information boundaries by drawing on sociological, organizational, and other social science theories? Re discussion of surveillance

Would that some of this discussion had taken place during the fall of 2001 and in the months and years following as the legal support structure was built through a variety of statutes, regulations, attorney general's opinions, executive orders, and other means! It will be very difficult to unravel logistically irrespective of any changes in the law or political mood at this point. For a longer historical background, an analysis of interactions between changes in the pertinent law and developments in society as understood via social science research, a theoretical and conceptual framework for thinking about this use of power by the informational state, and an opportunity to contextualize surveillance relative to the use of other informational tools by the state, CHANGE OF STATE: INFORMATION, POLICY, AND POWER (MIT Press, 2006/2009) may be of interest. Please circulate to potential candidates. *Four year doctoral project: The geography and political economy of software production* Funded by a European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award to Prof. Rob Kitchin, we are seeking a doctoral student to work on /The Programmable City/ project. The project will be based in the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. The production of software, like any industry, has a particular space economy to its creation and circulation. Its operations are organised and structured both sectorally and spatially to enable efficient production, and minimise costs and maximise profit. At a macro-level there is a geography of software development, so that whilst software creation takes place across the world, it is concentrated in key sites, for example, Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Boston, and Ireland, where there is an agglomeration of skilled labour, entrepreneurship, technologies, venture capital, and local tax and development regimes. At these sites, software is the product of a complex interplay of social, political and economic processes operating within and across scales. For other kinds of software production, such as open source projects, development is often more dispersed and distributed. This project will provide a detailed analysis of the geography and political economy of software development, with a particular focus on Boston and Dublin. It will involve case study research and interviews with company managers and agencies and organisations that seek to facilitate inward investment and indigenous start-ups (development agencies, business incubators, venture capitalists, etc). *Stipend **:* *EUR16,000 p.a, plus fees* The stipend is projected to increment by 8% per annum.
