Call for Papers Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication Editors: Lina Khatib, Stanford University Tarik Sabry, University of Westminster Dina Matar, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London Gholam Khiabany, University of Sussex Reviews Editor: Sune Haugbolle, University of Roskilde The Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, now in its sixth year, is a platform for interdisciplinary scholarly work that explores transformations in culture, communication, and politics in the Middle East and North Africa. The Journal aims to challenge the traditional paradigms used to understand media and the Middle East, seeing “communication” as extending beyond the study of media in the traditional sense. MEJCC welcomes contributions from international scholars engaged with the Middle East within various academic disciplines and using diverse approaches, whether as articles or reviews of films, books (including novels), and exhibitions. MEJCC is seeking papers critically addressing (though not exclusive to) the following: - the old and new media in all their forms (the broadcast media, the print media, electronic media, and film), whether in or about the Middle East - processes of communication in geographical space in the Middle East (including street art, posters and architecture) - popular culture in the Middle East - the relationship between the media and communication practices and political and social processes in the region - the cultural practices through which power is expressed and politics is performed. MEJCC is published by Brill three times a year (http://www.brill.com/middle-east-journal-culture-and-communication) We publish open issues and themed issues. Our latest themed issue this year was on youth cultures in North Africa. The forthcoming one (in the fall) will be about the performance of space in Palestine. I shall also present my own proposal for reclaiming the distinction between humans, artefacts and nature, or, more precisely between agents, artefacts and nature. This proposal is inspired by Hannah Arendt' work. I shall argue that the best criterion to distinguish agents, artefacts and nature lies in the "nature" of the interactions at stake much more than in the "nature" of the entities concerned. Thinking about humans as if they were machines undermines de facto any robust way to distinguish meaningfully humans from artefacts. So, paying more attention to what it means to consider an entity as an agent, or as an artefcat, or as part of nature is critical. This offers also a grounding for recognizing another distinction: that between control and orientation, and thereby take distance with the omniscient/omnipotent utopia and articulate freedom with responsibility, in an enlightened and confident perspective. There will also be an opportunity for webinar participants to chat and ask questions during the talk, all this from the comfort of your own computer: webinars take place entirely in an "online virtual room", that will be made accessible on the event page. The Masters in International Politics of the Internet is a multidisciplinary degree hosted in the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth - one of the world's leading IP/IR departments. Students will have the opportunity to study Internet governance, cyber security (from both a political and strategic perspective), Internet Freedom and cyber war as well as modules from our law and computer science faculties. The Children and Childhood Studies Area of the Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association invites you to participate in the annual MAPACA conference. Papers in this area examine intersections of childhood and pop culture including the impact of pop culture on children and childhood, representations of childhood in pop culture, and the role of children and young adults as influencers and creators of popular and American culture.
