Re: [Air-L] AoIR Wiki Was: A suggestion for reading lists and syllabi
by John Carter McKnight 08 Aug '13

<john.mcknight(a)asu.edu> I've been tasked with updating the wiki. Assuming it would be similar to updating a WordPress installation on a website, something I do regularly, I volunteered. I've discovered I can't make heads or tails of the MediaWIki update instructions, spread across multiple locations. I've just spent two hours with a friend who ran a corporate database design firm, and they couldn't figure it out either, and have gone back to do further research. At this point, I'd like to see it through, to make best use of my friends' volunteer time, and to develop a single, clear, comprehensive set of directions for AoIR volunteers updating the site. Kudos to those who have worked on this project before for their effort on this challenging project, and I do endorse calls for move to a system that can be maintained easily by amateur volunteer labor. Whom and what can you trust in online / mediated environments? Interdisciplinary faculty and PhD workshops - University of Oslo
by Judith Simon 08 Aug '13

08 Aug '13

Dear colleagues, Please cross-post and distribute as appropriate - with the note that the deadline for applications for participation in either the faculty and/or the PhD workshops is coming up: August 15, 2013. (Please see the website for further details.) Faculty workshop PhD workshop Public Debate Whom and what can you trust in online / mediated environments? Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Philosophy, Computer Science, Media Studies. September 26-27, 2013: Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo. Lecturers / mentors: Dag Elgesem, University of Bergen James Moor, Dartmouth College Judith Simon, University of Vienna &, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Elisabeth Staksrud, University of Oslo Mariarosaria Taddeo, University of Warwick Herman Tavani, Rivier University, New Hampshire John Weckert, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, Australia Background / description: James Moor¹s seminal paper, ³What is Computer Ethics?² (1985), inaugurated a new generation of interdisciplinary reflection on how computing technologies evoked distinctive new ethical challenges. These challenges are often quite novel and their roots in specific technologies thus require equally novel and collaborative reflection across the otherwise diverse disciplines of philosophy, applied ethics, computer science, social science, and so on. Especially over the past decade, increasing attention has been given to questions of trust and privacy in online and mediated environments. These questions are complicated by important differences between face-to-face and online/mediated experiences of trust and privacy - and further complicated by the increasingly important roles of Artificial Agents (AAs) and Multi-Agent Systems (MASs) such as those at work in ³recommendations for you² on commercial websites, web-page ranking algorithms used in popular search engines, and so on. At the same time, AAs and MASs are becoming increasingly autonomous capable of making decisions independently of human control. Such autonomy raises centrally philosophical questions: Are such AAs and MASs further capable of making autonomous ethical judgments including the specific sort of judgment denoted by phronesis or ³practical wisdom²? And: how would we know if we can or should trust these agents precisely as they become increasingly indispensible to our lives? Our lecturers / mentors have each undertaken leading work in these domains, both within philosophically-grounded and -oriented reflection (J. Moor, J. Simon, M. Taddeo, H. Tavani) and within the contexts of online and mediated communication environments (D. Elgesem, E. Staksrud, C.Ess). Our faculty and PhD workshops are designed to further important dialogue and debate, and foster current doctoral research in these domains. The public debate will offer highlights of current insights and findings, along with critical discussion of our defining themes and questions. For more details, including registration procedures, please see the workshops / lecture website. <http://www.hf.uio.no/forskning/doktorgrad-karriere/forskerutdanning/gjennom foring/linjer/medie/arr_medie/2013/whom-to-trust.html> Looking forward to welcoming many of you to Oslo! Ignite-IR presentation deadline extension: August 12
by Alexander Halavais 08 Aug '13

08 Aug '13

Heard from at least one person that they hadn't realized the Ignite deadline had come and gone, so we are extending it until August 12. If you have a manifesto, a beef, a cool trick, a neat case, an awesome project, a creative streak*, a brief meditation, or anything that will enthrall a large audience for five minutes AND fit the formalism of an ignite (20 slides, auto-advancing every 15 seconds, for a total of 5 minutes), please consider submitting. The Ignite is a plenary session, so it's a good way to get your ideas out to a large audience. You may "add" an Ignite presentation, even if you are already doing two. IGNITE-IR presentation: Ignite is a high-energy five-minute plenary presentation format (seehttp://igniteshow.com/) Please submit a proposal via http://bit.ly/ignite-ir14 . Your slides must be completed (and you must be registered) by September 25 if accepted. Best, Alex Halavais * The committee reserves the right to restrict streaking.

AoIR Wiki Was: A suggestion for reading lists and syllabi
by Alex Leavitt 08 Aug '13

08 Aug '13

Oh, good to know! And boy does this wiki need an update. I'm surprised we don't have regular "add it to the wiki" messages when people ask to compile reading lists and syllabi! How do we go about getting accounts for the wiki? My guess is the "transitioning the membership system" message is pretty outdated... 2013 AoIR Book Award
by Alexander Halavais 07 Aug '13

07 Aug '13

Dear AoIR Members and future members: It gives me great pleasure to announce the winner of the 2013 AoIR Book Award, which celebrates an outstanding book published in the previous year that addresses issues relating to our field. The book is Julie E. Cohen's "Configuring the networked self : Law, code, and the play of everyday practice," published by Yale University Press (http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0300125437) The committee noted that the book was well organized and written in an accessible style, while remaining provocative. They appreciated the grounding of the argument in user practice, and Cohen's ability to account for the reality of decentered subjectivity and creativity. I want to thank the committee for their time and careful attention to many submissions in a short amount of time. Thank you, Steve Jones, T.L. Taylor, and Klaus Bruhn Jensen for taking on the task. And congratulations to Prof. Cohen on her contribution to the field. Sincerely, Alex Halavais

Final CFP> The 9th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: The Social Informatics of Information Boundaries
by Pnina Fichman 07 Aug '13

07 Aug '13

Final Call for Papers and Participation: The 9th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium: The Social Informatics of Information Boundaries Sponsored by: ASIS&T SIG Social Informatics and Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics, Indiana University Saturday, November 2, 2013, 8:30-12:30 PM Centre Sheraton, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Organizers: Howard Rosenbaum and Pnina Fichman, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University The purpose of this ASIST pre-conference research symposium is to disseminate current research and research in progress that investigates the social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICT) across all areas of ASIS&T. Building on the success of past years, the symposium includes members of many SIGs and defines “social” broadly to include critical and historical approaches as well as contemporary social analysis. It also defines “technology” broadly to include traditional technologies (i.e., paper), state-of-the-art computer systems, and mobile and pervasive devices. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as richly described practice cases and demonstrations. This year, as we observe the 10th year since the passing of Rob Kling, we are particularly interested in papers that advance social informatics further in theoretical conceptualization or empirical grounding. We are interested in work that assumes a critical stance towards the Symposium’s theme but are also soliciting research on other related social informatics topics. We encourage all scholars interested in social aspects of ICT (broadly defined) to share their research and research in progress by submitting an extended abstract of their work and attending the symposium. This year’s conference theme is “Beyond the Cloud: Rethinking Information Boundaries.” In keeping with this theme, the symposium theme is “the social informatics of information boundaries.” We are soliciting work that focuses on the critical analysis of the concept of information boundaries and boundary work from a Social Informatics perspective. Questions motivating the research could include (but are not limited to): - What can a social informatics approach tell us about the nature of information boundaries, boundary crossing, and boundary work? - What are the social and technological forces that enable and constrain information boundaries and boundary work? - How do the social, technological, and informational boundaries evolve and shape each other? - How and to what extent can we enhance our understanding of information boundaries by drawing on sociological, organizational, and other social science theories? The schedule for the workshop will involve the presentations of papers and the best social informatics paper awards for 2012 (call to follow). We expect an engaging discussion with lively interactions with the audience. Deadlines: August 9, 2013: Submit a short paper (2000 words), a poster (500 words), or a panel (1000 words) by email to Howard Rosenbaum (hrosenba(a)indiana.edu) and Pnina Fichman (fichman(a)indiana.edu) September 2, 2013: Author notifications (in time for conference early registration (NOTE: this timeline may be adjusted when the registration dates are announced). Fees: Members $90 - early registration ($110 after early registration ends) Non-members $110 - early registration ($130 after early registration ends) ------------------------ Pnina Fichman, Ph.D. Director, Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics Associate Professor, School of Informatics and Computing Affiliated Associate Professor, School of Global and International Studies 901 E. 10th St. Informatics West #301 Indiana University, Bloomington IN 47408 Office: (812) 856-1587 Cell: (812) 322-0219 Web: http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/~fichman/
