Call for Papers "Twitter Data Analytics", special issue of Aslib Proceedings
by Katrin Weller 13 Aug '13

13 Aug '13

*apologies for cross-posting* Please consider submitting your work for this call for papers: Special issue call for papers from Aslib Proceedings: Twitter data analytics Aslib Proceedings (AP) has an ISI impact factor of 0.432 and is the major publication for ASLIB – the Association for Information Management in the United Kingdom - a membership association for people who manage information and knowledge in organisations and the information industry. This special 2014 Aslib Proceedings issue is guest edited by Professor Axel Bruns, Queensland University of Technology and Dr Katrin Weller, GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences What is the focus of this special issue? This special issue explores the possibilities and limitations of Twitter data analytics. We are particularly interested in papers that place carefully conducted studies into the wider framework of current Twitter research. Research into Twitter and its uses has been gaining momentum over the last few years, with an increasing number of studies of Twitter communities and Twitter data. Twitter’s role within contemporary internet dynamics and its impact on different areas of private and public life have attracted attention. Researchers in many disciplines have been making progress in the establishment of both theories and methods for Twitter research. However, there still is a lack of comparison across individual studies and a need for commonly accepted standards in analysis and data interpretation. Twitter research is often based on rich data sets, so called big data, that can be retrieved via the Twitter API and subsequently be mined with specialised tools. This poses several challenges in theory and methods, which have been the subject of much recent discussion; the current hype around ‘big data’ has now also resulted in a critical response which seeks to determine the limitations of working with such only apparently comprehensive data sets and highlights the persisting value of research which draws only on ‘small data’. For this special issue, we invite articles which address the opportunities and challenges of Twitter data analytics from theoretical and practical, conceptual and empirical perspectives. Topics of interest include but are not restricted to: * Qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse Twitter content * Evaluation of metrics and approaches for Twitter analysis * Representativeness of Twitter data * Comparison of data collection approaches * Legal and ethical issues of Twitter research * Information visualisation * Twitter data retrieval and ranking * Information dissemination on Twitter * User behaviour and the evolution of norms and conventions * Information behaviour and information literacy * Linguistic analysis of Twitter content * "Embedded" content on Twitter (photos, URLs) and Twitter’s relations to other social networks * Network analysis * User surveys * Usage scenarios and case studies * Twitter’s role for information management Submissions * Papers should clearly connect their studies to the wider body of Twitter scholarship, and spell out the implications of their findings for future research. In general, only research-based submissions will be considered. Viewpoints, literature reviews or general reviews are generally not acceptable * Papers should be 4,000 to 6,000 words in length (including references). Please see the author guidelines for citations and references style * For all additional information prior to submission, please contact Professor Axel Bruns or Dr Katrin Weller * Please make submissions to Aslib Proceedings using ScholarOne Manuscripts, our online submission and peer review system quoting this reference number APCALL6 Schedule dates and submission deadlines * Paper submission: 15 September 2013 * Notice of review results: 15 November 2013 * Revisions due: 31 December 2013 * Publication: Aslib Proceedings, issue 3, 2014 Feel free to distribute this information! The call for papers is available online at: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/call_for_papers.htm?id=4778

CFP - Shared Machine Shops: Beyond Local Prototyping and Manufacturing
by Mathieu ONeil 13 Aug '13

13 Aug '13

[apologies for multiple posts] Call for Papers - Special issue of the Journal of Peer Production Shared Machine Shops: Beyond Local Prototyping and Manufacturing Editors: Maxigas (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), Peter Troxler (International Fab Lab Association, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) In the last years we have witnessed an incredible proliferation of shared machine shops in a confusing number of genres: hackerspaces, makerspaces, Fab Labs and their more commercial counterparts such as TechShops, co-working spaces, accelerators and incubators. These are currently "fringe phenomena" because they play a minor role in the production of wealth, knowledge, political consensus and the social organisation of life. Interestingly, however, they also experience the same core transformations as contemporary capitalism. That is, for the individual: the convergence of work, labour and other aspects of life. On a systemic level: the rapid development of algorithmically driven technical systems and their intensifying role in social organisation. Finally, as a corollary: the practical and legitimation crisis of modern institutions, echoed by renewed attempts at self-organisation. Arguably, hackers occupied such an ambiguous position since the beginning of hackerdom, but shared machine shops represent a new configuration. They appear as embodied communities organised in research and production units of physical and logical goods; they even appear to escape the subcultural ghetto as educational institutions, museums, and libraries start to integrate them into their ambit. They are eminent laboratories in both their practices and products: as experimental forms of social institutions, and as the developers of technological prototypes projecting new visions of the future. Industry actors, state authorities and policy makers have recognised such milieus as prolific grounds for recruitment and new organisational models, which in itself warrants critical attention. Inspired by all these developments, we dedicate the next special issue of the Journal of Peer Production to Fab Labs and similar places. Some of the questions we are interested in exploring: * What are the historical conditions and concrete genealogies which enabled the emergence of shared machine shops? (Can we talk about the renewed relevance of craftsmanship?) * Are rapid prototyping practices changing the relationships to technology, research and development, and innovation? (Are shared machine shops democratising knowledge and production or rather building a new maker elite?) * How do technologies cultivated in shared machine shops such as personal fabrication intervene in urban and rural geographies? (Is the time ripe for "global villages" or we have to adapt to "smart cities"?) * What new and old anthropologies and ethics are articulated in shared machine shops? (Who is the “New Man” of Peer Production?) * Finally, how do shared machine shops interface with the political economy of contemporary capitalism and the military-industrial complex? (If the means of production are in the hands of the workers, is that free labour, a new form of outsourcing, or the germ for a next revolution?) Beyond local prototyping and manufacturing capability, what is the contribution of shared machine shops to critical practices of technology appropriation, to products, services and consumption patterns, to urban and rural geographies, and to practical political economy and ethics? Contributions are welcome from scholars and practitioners alike. Collaborative efforts are encouraged. We are mainly expecting academic papers on the one hand, and commented project documentations or narrative vignettes on the other hand, but anything that can be presented on a website could work. However, submitters are advised to keep in mind that the content should address questions of consequence to practitioners, based on realities on the ground, while at the same time they should be reflexive and consider their wider intellectual context. Submission proposals of up to 500 words due by September 30th, 2013, and should be sent to fablabissue(a)peerproduction.net. Submissions will be notified by October 15th, 2013, and full papers and materials (research papers around 8,000 words, testimonies and documents around 3,000 words) are due by January 31st, 2014, for review. Final submission deadline is June 1st, 2014. The special issue is due to appear in early July 2014. Research papers are peer reviewed according to JoPP review policies.

CFP, The Information Society Special Issue - Connecting Fields: Information, Learning Sciences and Education
by June Ahn 12 Aug '13

12 Aug '13

Call for Papers The Information Society Connecting Fields: Information, Learning Sciences and Education http://www.indiana.edu/~tisj/connecting_fields.pdf <http://www.indiana.edu/%7Etisj/connecting_fields.pdf> - Deadline for extended abstracts: *December 15, 2013* - Selection notification: *January 15, 2013* - Full paper submissions: *May 1, 2014* The ways in which people interact with information is evolving rapidly. For example, modern questions about life, love, and where to eat for dinner are negotiated over platforms such as Yelp or Instagram, and well established information environments such as Wikipedia, Twitter, and Reddit are being reconsidered as sites for situated learning. We are fast moving away from clearly demarcated technologies and arenas for information sharing or learning, and instead, evolving toward blended realms of public, peer-oriented interaction made possible by new social norms and technological affordances. This blurring of boundaries affords an opportune moment to consider the connections between information and education, or the information sciences and learning sciences. We need to build bridges between fields, institutions, communities and practices. This blending and merging represents an analytical opportunity to decipher trends, institutionalized assumptions and norms, and conspicuous omissions. We are soliciting abstracts that exemplify this bi-directional perspective, and bring together scholars from multiple fields interested in aspects of information, learning, and education. We welcome both empirical or conceptual works that: (1) critically integrate a lens from information science if the research is grounded in the learning sciences or education, or (2) rigorously incorporate a learning or educational lens if grounded in information science or related fields. We hope that this special issue will be a foundational touchstone through which scholars across information science, learning sciences, and other cognate fields can build a new discourse. We encourage contributions that come from a wide range of perspectives, including (but not limited to): - The role of *information behavior* in learning processes with digital and participatory media - The role of *information or education institutions, organizations, and networks* in facilitating new forms of learning and credentialing - Applications of *information science, computation, and learning analytics *to**create new models for continuous feedback, information driven instructional practice, and personalized learning - Applications of *human-centered design *to support and develop new modalities for learning such as games for learning, simulations, mobile and embodied/tangible computing - Crowds and online communities (e.g., citizen science, Twittersphere) as *Communities of Practice* - The role of *hacker/maker spaces and libraries* within the evolving learning ecosystem - The role of technology in enabling new *institutional logics *within education (i.e., massively open online courses (MOOCs), Institute of Play's Quest Schools in New York and Chicago, and Peer2Peer University) - The relationship between *information and education policy* - Any other topics that can be a touchstone for scholars at the intersection of information, learning, and education Guest Editors: June Ahn, PhD Assistant Professor College of Information Studies College of Education University of Maryland, College Park juneahn(a)umd.edu <mailto:juneahn@umd.edu> Ingrid Erickson, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Library and Information Science School of Communication & Information Rutgers University ingrid.erickson(a)rutgers.edu <mailto:ingrid.erickson@rutgers.edu> Submission Details: Interested authors should submit a 300-400 word abstract with 3-6 keywords by December 15, 2013. Abstracts must address how the paper will highlight the bi-directional nature of the special issue theme. All submissions will be reviewed by the guest editors, and authors will be notified of their selection by January 15, 2014. Selected authors will be invited to submit a full paper for the special issue and will receive feedback to help craft final submissions, which will be due May 1, 2014. Thereafter, all papers will undergo TIS' standard peer review process. Journal publication, expected in late 2014, will be determined in concert with TIS editors. Please send all submissions, questions, and correspondence to Dr. June Ahn at juneahn(a)umd.edu <mailto:juneahn@umd.edu>. FW: [MCJ] CFP: M/C Journal 'augment' Issue
by Axel Bruns 11 Aug '13

11 Aug '13

G'day ! This may be of interest to some of you: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 12 Aug. 2013 M/C - Media and Culture http://www.media-culture.org.au/ is calling for contributors to the 'augment' issue of M/C Journal http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ M/C Journal is inviting new contributors. Founded in 1998, M/C is a crossover journal between the popular and the academic, and a blind- and peer-reviewed journal. Our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/provides open access to all past issues. To find out how and in what format to contribute your work, visit http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/about/submissions. Call for Papers: 'augment' Edited by Rebecca Caines and Michelle Stewart Contemporary lives are increasingly saturated with the promise of technological enhancement - augmentation. Whether medically-enhanced "cyborg" bodies, AR glasses, new surveillance and crowdsourcing tools, locative media on mobile phones and gaming consoles, wearable technologies, or immersive third spaces, augmentation is often entangled in discourses of supplement and improvement. Yet augmentation is also contradictory, the logic of technological perfection co-existing with the perception of weakness or a lack. And so from within this messy space of technologies, bodies and spaces, failure is both generative and productive. Always desiring, we create, enhance, and augment: never satiated, we experiment, refine and repeat. Somatic and spatial practices collide on the promise of something more. In this edition of M/C Journal we seek to bring together theorists, practitioners and artists to consider the ways in which augmentation presents itself in the world and in their work. We welcome critical engagement with the philosophical, ethical and cultural implications of the augmented, cyborg and prosthetic body; interrogations of the layered information space of AR, critical reviews of augmented spatial practices; and explorations of the ways in which augmented media intersect with contemporary anxieties around power and statecraft. What is at stake when one engages in augmentation? Who/what pays the price when it falters, miscarries, or backfires? Which actors are engaged - or enrolled - in the practice? Which subjects are left vulnerable? We are particularly interested in cross-disciplinary investigations, mapping the points of connection and disruption in the application, reception and analysis of augmentation. We call upon our colleagues to discuss their forays into landscapes of prosthetics and cameras, Arduinos and QR codes, immersive zones and simulations, all the while collaborating with humans, cyborgs and nonhumans along the way. Prospective contributors should email an abstract of 100-250 words and a brief biography to the issue editors. Abstracts should include the article title and should describe your research question, approach, and argument. Biographies should be about three sentences (maximum 75 words) and should include your institutional affiliation and research interests. Articles should be 3000 words (plus bibliography). All articles will be refereed and must adhere to MLA style (6th edition). Article deadline: 11 Oct. 2013 Issue release date: 11 Dec. 2013 M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture. Contributors are directed to past issues of M/C Journal for examples of style and content, and to the submissions page for comprehensive article submission guidelines. Final CFP: Inaugural Issue, Journal of Media Innovations (Open Access)
by Charles Ess 10 Aug '13

10 Aug '13

Dear AoIRists, Please distribute as appropriate: The Journal of Media Innovations <https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/> Inaugural Issue - Spring 2014Researching Media Innovations: Defining the Fields; Tracing Research Trajectories¹ The Journal of Media Innovations explores changes in the media and communication industries through innovation theories. It focuses on innovation in the following areas: § New media services § New players in the media landscape § New roles of users § New practices by existing media organizations Users of digital media are becoming increasingly more active as producers (and re-distributors) of content, contributing to new services, new social constellations and new business models. Over the last decade a number of studies have focused on how Internet and mobile communication impact media services, business models and strategies, and user patterns. The Journal of Media Innovations builds on this large body of research, and takes it one step further by explicitly integrating perspectives on the roles of media technology and innovation with perspectives on the roles users have in generating innovation and transformation in the media sector. Our inaugural issue aims to bring together articles that explore how interrelations between media technology and users contribute to driving innovation. In doing so, we wish to collate and demarcate overviews of relevant fields, perspectives and trajectories for studying innovations in media. The articles will also facilitate critical reflection of the social, economic and political implications of media innovations. Theoretical perspectives may be linked to any field within the humanities or social sciences. These include, but are not limited to: user perspectives; economic perspectives; product perspectives; regulatory perspectives; and, strategic and organisational perspectives. The Journal of Media Innovations is an Open Access journal published by Fritt (Frie tidskrifter fra UiO), using the Open Journal Systems. Under this system, authors retain copyright of their work. Issue Coordinators Editor: Charles Ess Editorial Assistant: Karoline Andrea Ihlebæk Book Review Editor: Arne H. Call for Papers - Eastern Communication Association (CMC Division)
by Nicholas Bowman 09 Aug '13

09 Aug '13

Call for Papers 2014 Communication and Technology Interest Group 105th Annual Eastern Communication Association Convention “Communities of Dissent: A “Lively Experiment” in Dialogue, Diversity, and Discourse” Providence, Rhode Island Omni Providence Hotel April 23-27, 2014 Submission Deadline: Monday, October 15, 2013 The Communication and Technology Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites the submission of competitive papers, thematic program/panel proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (e.g., roundtables, symposia, debates, open forums, and community programs) for the 105th annual convention of the ECA. The 2014 convention’s theme, “Communities of Dissent”, explores the expression and suppression of dissent across communication contexts—relational, organizational, mediated, social, and political—and the attendant implications for such concerns as relational quality, community identification, civic engagement, public dialogue, accountability, and justice. Founded as a haven for religious dissenters, Providence is a city intimately shaped by discourses of disagreement. This year’s conference theme, “Communities of Dissent,” is inspired by the tradition of dissent that has marked the city’s long and notable history. Dissent can be transformational, a lively experiment in tolerance and freedom of conscience. When accepted and encouraged, dissent can be an important monitoring force, providing correctives for unethical behavior, unfavorable decision-making, and insensitivity to others’ needs. Dissent can also be dangerous, undermining sound and orderly government, and fueling conflict and aggression. The convention, as always, features panels, round tables, short courses, and programming on the convention theme. In addition, the Fourth Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday (April 25-26). USC papers will be accepted through December 20, 2013, to enable scholarly student papers from the fall semester to be submitted. Submissions to the Communication and Technology Interest Group should adhere to the following guidelines: COMPETITIVE PAPERS Mission Statement for the Communication and Technology Interest Group: To encourage the exploration and dissemination of information/communication technologies that influence our perceptions of human communication endeavors. Authors are invited to submit competitive papers on any aspect of communication and technology from any theoretical, methodological, or critical perspective. Excluding title page, notes, and references, papers should be no longer than 25 pages. Papers longer than 25 pages may not be reviewed. Authors who have not presented a paper at a regional, national, or international convention should include the word "DEBUT" in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Papers authored by current undergraduate or graduate students should include the word "STUDENT" in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. (All of the paper's authors must meet the "debut" or "student" criterion for the paper to be so designated.) Competitive papers should be submitted via e-mail as TWO Separate MS Word files. File #1 must include: 1. Call for Proposals http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gbt/proposals.html Proposals are invited for the third biannual interdisciplinary conference: "Gender, Bodies & Technology: Performing the Human," May 1-3, 2014 The Inn at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia Sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program at Virginia Tech http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gbt/proposals.html Proposal Deadline: October 1, 2013 Gender, Bodies, & Technology is an initiative within Women’s and Gender Studies at Virginia Tech that aims to creatively and intellectually explore the multiple, proliferating, and gendered dimensions of technologized bodies and embodied technologies. Through our initiative and biannual conference, we seek to demonstrate, theorize, and perform the discursive and material nodes around which gender, bodies, and technology both cohere and fracture: how, for example, do the specter and reality of transvaginal ultrasounds index a historically specific female body? What is the relationship between expanded combat roles for female soldiers and the U.S. military’s escalating use of “unmanned” drone warcraft? How should we interpret airport body scanners and restroom architecture that threaten and displace transgender persons? We invite proposals from scholars in the humanities, social and natural sciences, feminist science studies, visual and performing arts, life sciences, and STEM fields for papers, panels, workshops, new media, art, and performance pieces that explore the intersections of gender, bodies & technology in contexts ranging from classrooms to the military, and from health care to the media. Our confirmed keynote speakers include: • Dr. Jennifer Robertson, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan • Micha Cardenas, performance artist and media theorist based at the University of Southern California • Dr. Shaowen Bardzell, Assistant Professor of Informatics at Indiana University We invite papers, workshops, and panel proposals that address the Gender/Bodies/Technology interface. Though not limited to the following, topics and themes might include: • Gender and the technologies of institutions; the reconfiguration of public and private spheres • Disability and technologies of expression/representation; enabling and constricting roles of technology • The intersectional dimensions of online and digital space; visibility and invisibility issues • Feminist appropriations of technology; technology as liberating vs. reifying social force • GLBT and queer media • Technology and evolution – post- and trans-humanism; bio-cultural change and the gendered dimensions of human plasticity • Gender, bodies, and artificial intelligence • Gendered technologies of the self; bodies and gender as objects of technological intervention • Technological aspects of reproduction and personhood; maternal capacity; neo-eugenics • Social and other new media and their relationship to gendered bodies; social media and sexual violence • Genetic and other biological imaginaries made available by biotechnology; gender and nanotechnology • The GBT configuration in popular media • Avatars, augmented and virtual realities, and the promise of genderless bodies • Gender as code; gender, bodies, and computation • New feminist materialisms; the technological materiality of gender • Technological failures; technophobia and gender • The (bio)technology of transgender, intersex, and other forms of gender variance • Race, ability, class and the politics of visibility in virtual bodies • Gender and digital literacy; the gendered natures of technicity, technophilia, and expertise • Neuroscience, genomics, and the production of sexual difference • Performance, new media and other creative expressions: engaging/enacting/destabilizing conventions of embodiment and technology • Gendered innovations in technological design: gendered objects and design • Technological production and control of classed, racialized, aged, disabled and gendered bodies • New media, digital representation and virtual gendered environments • How technology links (embodied) individuals and enacts (gendered) worlds • Technologically-mediated warfare, gender, and combat • Gender and the “non-human”; robots, animals and environmental expressions of gendered worlds • Technologies of development and sustainability; eco- and environmental feminism • Activism, participatory decision-making and issues of technological citizenship Our conference theme, “Performing the Human,” is an invitation for embodied creative and intellectual effort. We are committed to complementing traditional paper presentations from the social sciences, STEM, and humanities fields with scholarship and performance from the creative arts. We encourage innovative uses of technology and creative session formats and we welcome early contact by email if space and/or technology requirements might present logistical challenges. Proposals will be reviewed and notification of the outcome will be made byNovember 15, 2013.
