CFP - one month left for Surveillance, Games and Play
by Jennifer Whitson 15 Aug '13

15 Aug '13

Hello, There is one month left to get your submission in for the special issue of * Surveillance & Society<http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/surveillance-and-society/announceme…> *on surveillance, games and play. The deadline for submissions is September 15th, and the issue will be published this upcoming spring. We're really excited by all the interest this issue has generated and would like to make it truly phenomenal, so please contact either Bart Simon or I if you have any questions- or if you have a stellar Eve Online paper that must be published. ;) The full CFP is below. *CFP Surveillance, Games and Play * The games we play on our computers, iPads, and video game consoles are watching us. They track our every online move and send data on who we are, how we play, and whom we play with back to game and virtual world publishers such as Sony and Microsoft. Two events in the summer of 2011 exemplify the need to study surveillance in games: a hacker attack against Sony's Playstation Network compromised over 77 million user accounts including credit card numbers, while iPhone users discovered hidden code in their devices that tracked their movements and secretly sent this data back to Apple. This form of consumer surveillance that targets players has eluded critical appraisal in both the games studies and surveillanceliterature. The games we play are not only watching us, but are leveraging surveillance to mold us into better students, workers, and consumers, as evidenced by the growth of gamification applications that combine playful design and feedback mechanisms from games with users' social profiles (e.g. Facebook, twitter, and LinkedIn) in non-game applications explicitly geared to drive behavioural change. Accordingly, traditional surveillance activities are transformed through their combination with playful frames of reference and game-like elements. Yet, as argued by Anders Albrechtslund and Lynsey Dubbeld in volume 3(2/3) of this journal, surveillance is fun. It is an essential component of many games and virtual worlds. It enables family to find each other and playtogether online, such as when adult children who live thousands of miles away challenge their parents to a *Words with Friends *scrabble match over Facebook. Surveillance allows game companies to match strangers with similar skill sets and play-styles together in multiplayer games, thus increasing the flow of the game and players' mutual enjoyment. Surveillancefacilitates coordinated teamwork and sophisticated game economies, exemplified by informational tools such as the damage mods and kill-point monitors created by players for massively-multiplayer online games. Surveillance also makes online games and virtual worlds safe for children and young adults, restricting both the use of inappropriate language and content, as well as prohibiting the entry of potentially dangerous adults. Moreover, surveillance is pleasurable. As game company Valve found when they forayed into biometrics (i.e. measuring galvanic skin response and arousal levels), players are more engaged when they can see how they affect their opponents' own physiological responses. We, as players, like to watch our opponents, anticipating what they will do next. We also use surveillanceto improve our prowess and extend our moments of victory by using recording software and game replay functions This theme issue is dedicated to balancing two very different sides of surveillance: surveillance as a technology of corporate governance and surveillance as a technology of pleasure and play. *Possible research areas might include (but are not limited to):* - The role of surveillance in enabling play and games - The role of play and games in normalizing surveillance - Surveillance as gameplay or surveillance as a game mechanic - Playful surveillance applications - Playful representations of surveillance - Playful resistance to surveillance - Issues of identity, anonymity and pseudonymity in online games and virtual worlds - Online visibilities and the relationship between game publishers and user populations - The implications of using data gathered in-game for non-game applications - The use of surveillance and the representation of surveillance in online games, virtual worlds, and/or gamified applications, including topics such as: - Games that educate users about privacy and surveillance - End-User Licensing Agreements, Terms of Service, and awareness of surveillance - Applications of social networking services, locational data, and GPS devices in games and play - Uses of data gathering services, screen-capture tools, and recorded gameplay sessions - The surveillance of children and youth in virtual worlds and games - State and police use of in-game data for surveillance, tracking, behavioral profiling etc. - Surveillance and the competitive, professional e-sports gamingindustry - Data mining, game metrics, and targeted advertising in the game industry This is not intended to be an exclusive listing of possibilities for this edition. Other possibilities are welcomed and encouraged and can be discussed in advance with the guest-editors: Jennifer R.Whitson<j.whitson(a)concordia.ca>and Bart Simon <bart.simon(a)concordia.ca>. All papers must be submitted through the online submission system no later than *September 15th 2013*, for publication in *March 2014.* Click here<http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/surveillance-and-society/announceme…>for further information on submissions. Denver and hotels
by Janet Salmons, Ph.D. 14 Aug '13

14 Aug '13

Hello everyone, As someone who has had numerous frustrating conference site/ hotel mis-matches, I wanted to give a little local perspective on the Denver scene. The good news is that there are a number of hotels that are an easy walk from the Westin. The downtown area is pretty safe-- so you can count on being able to walk around to lots of great local restaurants. Also, there is a free shuttle that runs up and down 16th street (the hotel is just off 16th). 16th street is a bit of an odd mix-- a pedestrian mall with a bus shuttle down the middle of it. The shuttle also takes you to Market Street Station, where you can take buses to other parts of town or even to Boulder (my home town!) If you have an extra afternoon and want to see the Flatirons (http://www.bouldercoloradousa.com/) The shuttle also takes you to a few blocks from the Denver Art Museum, one of my favorite hangouts. (http://www.denverartmuseum.org/) As we say around here, DAM that's great art! If you want to add a day to see our fabulous Rocky Mountains, take a hike or want other suggestions, post here and I'm happy to give suggestions or point you to resources. One problem about coming to Colorado is that you might not want to leave. That's what happened to me! Re: [Air-L] disappearing Youtube videos and suppression of McBudgeting?

Like me not sending a list reply to the list. Constant use of the Internet may be degrading quality use. From: cka(a)asb.dk To: ptimusk(a)sympatico.ca Subject: RE: [Air-L] disappearing Youtube videos and suppression of McBudgeting? Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2013 09:57:57 +0000 Hi Peter, Thanks, you are right, I was able to get to it after restarting. I will be more careful about checking on multiple computers before I post. One phenomenon I did observe was a pattern on 3 different computers that Mcbudgeting was changed to budgeting in google and not in bing on the first search, and 4 times in a row this morning on a single computer. I didn't record the phenomenon, has anyone else experienced Google changing the search term? If so, in what contexts? Cheers, Constance From: Peter Timusk [ptimusk(a)sympatico.ca] Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2013 11:52 AM To: Constance Elizabeth Kampf Subject: RE: [Air-L] disappearing Youtube videos and suppression of McBudgeting? I think and this is not a personal attack you need to be careful with what you as an individual find on any given computer like any given suggested text your or google's computers have "remembered" . That said, being unemployed is worse than working at McDonalds. Thanks to education I am a working stiff. Thanks too, to all your ( the list; plural you) books because I know more about the Internet and sociology and computer use industry trends. This means I got a lot of interesting stuff to talk about at work even if I seem to be just programming geek to many coworkers. > From: cka(a)asb.dk > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2013 09:12:44 +0000 > Subject: [Air-L] disappearing Youtube videos and suppression of McBudgeting? > > Hi all! > > Looking for any insights people might have into the overnight disappearance of 2 videos posted about McBudgeting in Youtube and the shift in Google's search algorithm that automatically changes McBudgeting to Budgeting every time you search today. UNESCO call for research proposals
by Joly MacFie 14 Aug '13

14 Aug '13

http://www.unesco.org/new/en/media-services/single-view/news/unesco_calls_f… UNESCO calls for research proposals: case studies on the role of Internet intermediaries in promoting freedom of expression on Internet UNESCO launches a call for research proposals in order to identify principles for good practices and processes related to Internet intermediaries (such as Internet service providers, search engines, online media, and social media) that can protect freedom of expression by ensuring that any of limitations of this right are consistent with international standards. This project contributes to promoting online freedom of expression through assembling and analyzing empirical data, encouraging self-regulation and providing practical recommendations to industry, States and policy makers. Interested researchers and organizations are invited to submit their proposals *by 13 September 2013*. UNESCO, as enshrined in its Constitution, promotes the “free flow of ideas by word and image”. This covers promoting a free, open and accessible Internet space as part of promoting comprehensive freedom of expression both online and offline. Internet intermediaries play a unique role in linking authors of content and audiences. They may either protect or jeopardize end user rights to free expression, given their role in capturing, storing, searching, sharing, transferring and processing large amount of information, data and user-generated content. This role is particularly prominent in the cases of search engines and internet-service providers (ISPs), hosting providers, cloud computing services, online social networks and media houses. This project aims to identify principles for good practices and processes that are consistent with international standards for free expression that Internet intermediaries may follow in order to protect the human rights of end users online. Using a case study methodology, the research will evaluate how Internet intermediaries can either uphold or compromise freedom of expression. Up to five major categories of Internet intermediaries can be identified for research, bearing in mind that it may be richer and less costly to focus in upon fewer sectors: - Internet search engines and portals (Google, yahoo!, MSN, Baidu, Sina.com, etc.) - Social media networks (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Sina Weibo, etc.) - Online media with user-generated content (BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, online newspapers, etc.) - ISPs, including telecommunication, cable and mobile operators (Verizon, AT&T, free.fr, Orange, T-mobile, Nokia) - Data processing, web hosting providers and cloud computing services, including big data hosts and Domain Name Registries (Navisite, Akamai, ICANN, Register.com, Verizon) This project will make a unique contribution by gathering, evaluating and presenting empirical data and in-depth research on this topic that encourages principled self-regulation and particularly provides practical recommendations for how Internet intermediaries can meet international standards that respect the normative and fundamental value of free speech. The results of this project will inform various actors who are intermediaries, as well as other stakeholders, and will also contribute to developing an international set of principles for good practices. Research will possibly be presented at events around the World Summit on the Information Society and on Internet Governance Forum in 2014. The final research will likely be published as part of UNESCO’s Series on Internet Freedom and, budget allowing, be translated to all six UN official languages, which will inform UNESCO’s 195 Member States and other international policy-makers on intermediaries-related policy making to promote online freedom. *UNESCO, therefore, invites interested researchers and organizations to submit their proposals, according to the Background note <http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/CI/CI/pdf/news/background…> and General Terms of Reference<http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/CI/CI/pdf/news/general_te…>, by email to Ms Xianhong Hu, before noon (CET), 13 September 2013. Proposals should include a detailed description of the research methodology, possible case studies, timeline and the requested funding.* -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Joly MacFie 218 565 9365 Skype:punkcast WWWhatsup NYC - http://wwwhatsup.com http://pinstand.com - http://punkcast.com VP (Admin) - ISOC-NY - http://isoc-ny.org -------------------------------------------------------------- -
