Any AoIR members in Shanghai who'd like to meet up?
by Terri Senft 23 Aug '13

23 Aug '13

Hi Pals, I am currently in Shanghai looking at girls and public/street media use until next Tuesday, August 27th. In addition to making you all jealous (!!), I am writing to see if there are any faculty or students reading the AoIR list who are currently in Shanghai, and if so, whether you'd like to get together for tea or whatnot. Best way to contact me is at terri.senft(a)nyu.edu Yours in humidity, Terri -- <http://goog_689013053> <http://goog_689013053> Dr. Theresa M. Hi Heather, since I'm still collecting ethnographic data, I haven't published anything on Facebook and the marginalized specifically. I have submitted 2 papers to different conferences that touch a little bit on that... one of the papers I will present at IR14.0. Will you be there? Facebook take on Digital Inequalities seems way too deterministic... surprised?
by David Nemer 21 Aug '13

21 Aug '13

Dear all, Last night Mr. Z released a report called "Is Connectivity A Human Right?" with an attempt to come up with a plan to provide internet access to all of us. The title of the report gave me some hope on the content of his plan, but after reading it, I was, again, frustrated but not surprised. He is mostly concerned in spending money to improve the internet infrastructure and defray the costs with data plans, arguing that the internet is the "foundation of the global knowledge economy." I do see the value in investing money on internet infrastructure, since it is a big factor that keeps the digital inequalities so evident, but as we all know, it is just another factor... what about digital literacy and situated education? As I'm doing fieldwork in the slums (favelas) of Brazil, I finally see how Facebook became THE THING over here... and everywhere. People don't care about the "internet", web, emails... they only want to get on Facebook. It became very interesting when I started analyzing their behavior on the social networking site. It is mostly chatting, sharing and liking. The chat is in a horizontal way (they are chatting with people who belong to the same social class / community), but the stuff they share and like are completely vertical, the stuff come in English and/or from higher (and more educated) social classes and/or ads and pages suggested by Facebook. I have several informants who are illiterate and spend all their afternoons in the Telecentros and LAN Houses sharing and liking these things that they don't really understand. (Naive mode on) I honestly still don't know why Facebook wants to have everyone on the Intenet (mode off). My hunch is that they could (want to) turn those in social and economic disadvantages into mechanical turks and content consumers... Facebook does collaborate with local cellphone carriers... in Brazil Oi and Claro customers don't pay to get on the SNS on their mobile phones. So why don't Facebook start collaborating with local programs to develop digital literacy and critical thinking among the people that "can't buy data plans"? Anyways, I don't want to sound repetitive because people in AoIR and Community Informatics lists are well aware of such deterministic approaches and how they are not effective... but I'd like to invite everyone to think of ways to bring different views into places that can make a difference like Facebook Here's the link of the report: https://www.facebook.com/isconnectivityahumanright/isconnectivityahumanrigh… -- *David Nemer* PhD Candidate in Social Informatics School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University Editor of the Social Informatics Blog - http://socialinformaticsblog.com http://www.dnemer.com dnemer(a)indiana.edu

CAMRI Seminar (Sep 25): Vincent Mosco on the Political Economy of Cloud Computing and Big Data
by Christian Fuchs 21 Aug '13

21 Aug '13

To the Cloud: Big Data in a Turbulent World September 25, 2013 02:00pm-04:00pm Room A7.03, Harrow Campus, University of Westminster, Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), Northwick Park tube station (Metropolitan Line) Full information: http://www.westminster.ac.uk/research/a-z/camri/seminars/camri-seminar-cale… Opening talk of this autumn’s CAMRI Research Seminar Series (announcement of further dates/events will follow) Participation Participation is free and everyone is welcome. Please register at latest until 22 September by sending an email to Christian Fuchs: christian.fuchs(a)uti.at. Abstract This presentation offers an account of the political, economic, social and cultural issues emerging from the growth of cloud computing. It starts by situating cloud computing as a major force in the globalisation of informational capitalism and in the advance of a particular way of knowing, what I call digital positivism. It proceeds to examine the origins of cloud computing in the movements that arose in the pre-internet era to create an information utility. The presentation then defines cloud computing, describes its major characteristics, and identifies the leading corporate, and government cloud players. In doing so, it describes the battles for market power among a handful of companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Rackspace, the rapid and, for some, worrisome, expansion of the government cloud, the internationalisation of cloud computing, and the emergence of bottom-up community cloud projects. Next, it considers how the cloud is being marketed and mythologised through advertising, social media, corporate and government research, industry lobbying, and marketing events. Massive promotion is essential because dark clouds are gathering over the industry including the environmental problems created by data centres; concerns over privacy, security, and surveillance; and labour issues, particularly the impact on IT departments, and more generally on knowledge workers whose jobs are threatened by the cloud. The presentation concludes by offering a technical and a cultural critique of big data, digital positivism, and the cloud’s “way of knowing.” Biography Dr Vincent Mosco is Professor Emeritus, Queen's University, Canada. He is formerly Canada Research Chair in Communication and Society and Professor of Sociology. He is author of many works, including The Political Economy of Communication, second edition (Sage, 2009), The Laboring of Communication: Will Knowledge Workers of the World Unite (co-authored with Catherine McKercher, Lexington Books, 2008), and The Digital Sublime: Myth, Power, and Cyberspace (MIT Press, 2004). -- Christian Fuchs Professor of Social Media University of Westminster, Communication and Media Research Institute http://fuchs.uti.at, http://www.triple-c.at @fuchschristian +44 (0) 20 7911 5000 ext 67380

Visualizing the democratic divide online?
by Steven Clift 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

(Please cc: clift(a)e-democracy.org with any replies) I've been working to present data from PewInternet.org's Civic Engagement in the Digital Age report in ways that help people see the relative importance of raising new voices. Here is a draft infographic concept: http://bit.ly/ecivicgapinfographic I run E-Democracy (world's first election info project from 1994) and our BeNeighbors.org effort. It is working to create the world's most representative local online civic engagement network. We actually go door to door in lower income, highly diverse, high immigrant neighborhoods to sign people for neighborhood-based online participation. We see our work more and more strongly in an R+D with a purpose role. Go deeper and deeper and share knowledge wider and wider. FYI - This is my "inclusion" summary from the Pew report: http://bit.ly/pewcivic and round table discussions we've been having http://bit.ly/digicivic Two questions: * How would you improve the first chart? (Besides displaying online-only and off-line only civic communicators within the chart) * What other recent surveys provide additional insights into gaps in civic engagement online and offline? Our view is the the civic tech/open government movement must do more to raise new voices and work to make engagement more representative in order for it to have a positive social/civic benefit. It must close the gaps left by .org e-advocacy, media, and .com social networking and neighbor connecting models. If it further or disproportionately empowers those who already so up, what good is it? By visualizing the gaps as well as hopeful slices, we can better prioritize our use of scarce resources of online civic engagement. Thanks. Steven Clift Executive Director E-Democracy.org

Groklaw shutting down
by Richard Forno 20 Aug '13

20 Aug '13

The tinfoil-hat part of me (a little part, admittedly) wonders if we're well along the slippery slope of "if the government can't know or have access, then nobody can, and/or it'll be deemed illegal." We faced similar arguments in the early '90s but they're back with a vengence now, it seems. To wit: USG surveillance stuff aside, last week, Lavabit shut down & destroyed its data rather than fork over info to the USG -- and now its owner purportedly may be held in contempt of FISA court orders. Add to that Silent Circle discontinuing secure mail services rather than deal with government problems, etc .....and last evening I read that the DOJ is pushing SCOTUS to allow warrantless searching by police of mobile devices, too[1]. I suspect more such outcomes will follow in the coming weeks and months. We are living in interesting and troubling (depressing?) times. So while perhaps a bit extreme of a reaction, I sympathise with Jones' position and concerns in shutting down Groklaw, and will miss that site greatly. But life is not w/o a sense of irony: The USG loves to espouse the concept of "Internet freedom" in the world ... to whcih I am forced to ask: freedom from what? ---rick, grumpy and decaffinated [1] http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/08/19/obama-administ… --- Richard F. Forno, Ph.D. Director, Graduate Cybersecurity Program A/Director, UMBC Center for Cybersecurity cybersecurity.umbc.edu Surveillance concerns bring an end to crusading site Groklaw A legally informed Web site critical of lawsuits from the SCO Group, Apple, Oracle, and patent trolls shuts down because its founder says e-mail can't be protected from government scrutiny. by Stephen Shankland August 20, 2013 4:11 AM PDT Citing concerns about privacy and government surveillance, Pamela Jones is shutting down her site Groklaw, which for years took on what she and vocal fans saw as wrongheaded legal action in the tech domain. "There is now no shield from forced exposure," Jones said in final blog post Tuesday. Groklaw depended on collaboration over e-mail, "and there is now no private way, evidently, to collaborate." Jones, a paralegal, started her site a decade ago taking on the SCO Group's legal attack on IBM and others involving Linux and Unix intellectual property. She rebutted the company's position, detailed the arcana of the lawsuit proceedings, and shared legal filings on which the case rested. Volunteers attended some hearings in person, and collaborative efforts found just any hole that could be poked in SCO's case. The site archives show hundreds of posts since its start in May 2003. < - > http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-57599288-38/surveillance-concerns-bring-a… --- Just because i'm near the punchbowl doesn't mean I'm also drinking from it.
