CFP: Social Media / Protest panel - ISA congress of sociology, Japan, July 2014
by Gerbaudo, Paolo 02 Sep '13

02 Sep '13

Dear All, At the International Sociological Association (ISA) Congress of Sociology in Yokohama Japan, July 13-19 2014, I am organising a session titled ‘Social Media and Collective Identities in the new Activism’ which could be of interest for some people on this list. The session will host papers looking at activist use of social media as means of identity-building, organisation and mobilisation in recent protest movements (Arab Spring, indignados, Occupy Wall Street, protests in Brazil and Turkey). You find the abstract of the session below. The deadline is September 30th 2013. To submit an abstract for the conference, please use this link https://isaconf.confex.com/isaconf/wc2014/cfp.cgi. You will find the Social Media session by clicking on ‘Research Committees’ and scrolling down in the following page to RC47 where the session is listed. Please contact me if you need further information on the session. Best, Paolo Gerbaudo Social Media and Collective Identities in the 'New Activism' This session will look at the use of social media by social movement activists with a particular focus on the new forms of identification that develop in the use of these forms of communication. It invites papers looking at the way in which Facebook pages and groups, and Twitter accounts and feeds become a platform for the construction of the collective identity of new actors, by putting forward common names, common images, common slogans, and common imaginaries. It will question what is the nature of the new forms of identity that are developed on social media, what is their degree of coherence, permanence, and how they reflect the existential challenges of a phase of economic crisis, political transition and technological innovation. 2nd CFP: Workshop Ethics of Cyber Conflict
by Mariarosaria Taddeo 02 Sep '13

02 Sep '13

Dear Colleagues, Apologies for cross posting. Please find below a CFP on a 'Workshop on the Ethics of Cyber Conflict', which I am organising in collaboration with the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence. With kind regards, Mariarosaria Taddeo -- Dr. Mariarosaria Taddeo Research Fellow in Cyber Security and Ethics, PAIS, University of Warwick Research Associate - Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford http://taddeo.philosophyofinformation.net/index.html *************************************** * * *Ethics of Cyber Conflict* *Time:* November 2013 *Place:* Rome, Italy *Participation fee:* none In the age of the so-called information revolution, the ability to control, disrupt or manipulate the enemy’s information infrastructure has become as decisive as weapon superiority with respect to determining the outcome of conflicts. So much so that Pentagon’s definition of cyberspace as a new domain in which war is waged, alongside land, sea, air and space, comes as no surprise. The deployment of cyber conflicts as part of a state’s defensive or offensive strategy is a fast growing phenomenon, which is rapidly changing the dynamics of combat as well as the role that warfare plays in political negotiations and the life of civil societies. Such changes are not the exclusive concern of the military, for they also have a bearing on ethicists and policymakers, since existing ethical theories of war, together with national and international regulations, struggle to address the novelties of this phenomenon. The issue could not be more pressing and there is a much felt and fast escalating need to share information and coordinate ethical theorising about cyber conflicts. Contributions to the workshop will address issues concerning the way ICTs are affecting our ethical views of conflicts and warfare, as well as the analysis of just-war principles in the light of the dissemination of cyber conflicts; humanitarian military interventions based on ICTs; whether preventive acts of cyber war may satisfy jus-ad-bellum criteria; challenges of upholding jus-in-bello standards in cyber warfare, especially in asymmetric conflicts; attribution and proportionality of the response to cyber attacks; moral permissibility of automated responses and ethical deployment of military robotic weapons. More details can be found on the workshop website http://ccdcoe.org/428.html . The workshop will be a *two-day event* organised by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and chaired by *Dr Mariarosaria Taddeo*, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Warwick. The event will gather ethicists, experts in military studies, policymakers and experts in cyber security to discuss the ethical problems caused by cyber conflicts. *Submission of Papers:* Authors are required to submit an extended abstract of the planned paper which should describe the topic and set out the main aspects and structure of the research (up to 1000 words). Following a preliminary review and acceptance of the abstract, the authors will be requested to submit the full paper that meets high academic quality, which will be considered for a publication in an international peer-reviewed journal. Speakers will be offered travel, transfer from, and to the airport, accommodation for the duration of the event. Submission details, author guidance and other practical information will be made available on the Centre’s website latest by August 2013. *Important Dates *Extended abstracts (1000 words): 9 September 2013 Notification of acceptance: 30 September 2013 Full paper: 07 November 2013 *Registration* is required for this event, please contact events -at- ccdcoe.org *For enquiries about the workshop*, please contact Lt Ludovica Glorioso (ludovica.glorioso -at- ccdcoe.org) or Anna-Maria Talihärm (anna-maria.taliharm -at- ccdcoe.org)

CFP: CSCW 2014 INTERACTIVE POSTERS, DEMOS, PANELS
by Irina Shklovski 01 Sep '13

01 Sep '13

*********Apologies for cross-posting************ CALL FOR INTERACTIVE POSTERS, DEMOS, PANELS COMPUTER-SUPPORTED COOPERATIVE WORK AND SOCIAL COMPUTING 2014 (CSCW 2014) Baltimore, MD, Feb 15-19, 2014 http://cscw.acm.org<http://cscw.acm.org/> CSCW is an international and interdisciplinary conference focused on how technology intersects with social practices. IMPORTANT DATES * October 07, 5:00pm PDT, 2013: Submission due * November 07: Final notifications CSCW brings together top researchers and practitioners from academia and industry who are interested in both the technical and social aspects of collaboration. The development and application of new technologies continues to enable new ways of working together and coordinating activities. Cooperation and coordination take place in different settings, ranging from work to recreational and social activities. Moreover, an increasing range of devices are involved in cooperation, as we collaborate in different contexts and situations. The conference has several venues for participation: INTERACTIVE POSTERS: CSCW 2014 will include an interactive poster category for late-breaking and preliminary results, smaller results not suitable for a full or short paper, innovative ideas not yet validated through user studies, early student research, and other research best presented in an interactive forum. Posters will be presented in a special Poster Session where researchers will interact directly with conference attendees. The posters will then remain up throughout the remainder of the conference. We are also exploring several new exciting opportunities for poster presentation. Interactive poster abstract submissions (extended abstract and poster draft) must be made via the Precision Conference System. Send queries about Interactive posters to posters2014(a)cscw.acm.org PANELS: Panels are a great way to generate debate and raise new and interesting issues at CSCW. With panels we want to provide a forum for discussing provocative, controversial, innovative, emerging, boundary-spanning and boundary-breaking issues. While paper sessions provide detailed discussions of work recently completed, panels provide an opportunity to explore what is on the horizon — or what is already here but not adequately recognized, acknowledged or discussed. The best panels provide opportunities for audience participation. We especially encourage innovative formats that will address relevant, critical and contemporary topics, engage the audience and provoke discussion and engage multiple disciplines in productive dialog. Panel proposals should be no longer than 4 pages in the SIGCHI Extended Abstracts format. Panel submissions should be e-mailed to the Panels Co-Chairs at panels2014(a)cscw.acm.org<mailto:panels2014@cscw.acm.org>. DEMOS: CSCW 2014 demonstrations present implementations of new CSCW systems and concepts. The peer-reviewed demonstrations allow conference participants to view novel and noteworthy CSCW systems in action, discuss the systems with those who created them, and try them out. Appropriate demonstrations include applications, technologies, and research prototypes, and may showcase work that has been or is being published at CSCW or elsewhere. Demonstrations can also serve to showcase novel commercial products not previously described in the research literature. Demonstrations should be interactive and provide attendees a hands-on experience. The demo forum is not an opportunity for marketing or sales presentations. Presenters must have been directly involved with the development of the system and be able to explain the unique and novel contributions of the system. Demo submission categories: At CSCW 2014, the primary type of demo is the Reception Demo. Reception Demos will be showcased during a special demo reception. These demonstrations will be spaced around a large room, and will run concurrently during the block of time set aside for demonstrations. Attendees will be free to explore the room and visit demos of interest. This promotes informal interaction and in-depth information exchange among demo presenters and attendees. A demo presentation should be brief so that it can be shown repeatedly to many attendees. Demonstrators may also propose an Integrated Demo. Integrated Demos will run throughout the conference, and should enhance the conference experience for attendees. Because integrated demos can directly affect participants’ conference experience, they will be held to a higher standard of quality and robustness than reception demos. Examples of integrated demos might be systems that enable social networking, or that enable collaborative reflection on conference presentations. Demo submissions consist of two components: (1) a two-page extended abstract in the Extended Abstracts format, and (2) a demo system summary that describes the logistics of the demonstration. We also highly encourage authors to also include (3) a video of the system in action, particularly if it helps illustrate the proposed demonstration (at most 2 minutes long). The extended abstract, system summary, and URL for accessing the video should be e-mailed to the Demonstrations Co-Chairs at demos2014(a)cscw.acm.org<mailto:demos2014@cscw.acm.org>. All demonstrations will be advertised and showcased in the conference pack and throughout the conference.

Job opportunity at the University of Amsterdam: PhD candidate for the research project ‘Complex contention’
by J.L. Uitermark 30 Aug '13

30 Aug '13

http://www.uva.nl/en/about-the-uva/working-at-the-uva/vacancies/item/13-271… Project description Recent years have seen massive protests around the world, ranging from the revolutions in the Middle East and the Spanish indignados movement to the global Occupy protests and the revolts in Turkey. These mobilizations have in common that they diffused with unprecedented speed in both urban and online environments. The “complex contention” research project aims to develop an approach to map and explain these waves of contention. The research project builds upon a work on urban politics and social movements by Justus Uitermark and Walter Nicholls. Theoretically, the project aims to combine insights from relational sociology with complexity theory. Methodologically, the project aims to combine the quantitative examination of online and offline social networks with ethnography in urban settings. The successful candidate will develop the study’s research design in more detail in dialogue with the supervisors but is expected to especially focus on quantitative network analysis. The PhD researcher will be based at the AISSR, which offers a stimulating intellectual environment across several social science disciplines. In the first year, the PhD student will participate in courses and meet with supervisors and other faculty members to develop a detailed research proposal. In the second and third year, the PhD-student will conduct and report on the research and complete the PhD-thesis. Tasks * Conduct quantitative analyses of social movements’ social networks and diffusion processes, using data from social media; * conduct focused ethnographic field research; * 10% teaching; * collaborate with supervisors and peers on research and publications on complex contention; * write a PhD thesis; * participate in the AISSR PhD program; * participate in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities. Call for Paper: Computers in Human Behavior Special Issue on "Newcomer Participation in Online Communities", Deadline: Sept. 30, 2013
by Aditya Johri 30 Aug '13

30 Aug '13

Special Issue of Computers in Human Behavior: "Newcomer Participation in Online Communities" Special Issue Editors Aditya Johri, Virginia Tech Vandana Singh, University of Tennessee, Knoxville Rosta Farzan, University of Pittsburgh Oded Nov, NYU Polytechnic Online communities have become one of the most common forms of organizations on the Internet. They are integral to the functioning of resources such as Wikipedia and form the backbone of many software development efforts, particularly Open Source Software. Going back at least a decade, researchers have examined various issues related to online communities. They have examined different forms of participation and highlighted the problems encountered in maintaining and growing these communities. One important finding from this literature is that it is critical to nurture and support newcomers for communities to thrive. Newcomers are essential for any organization and their successful participation determines their performance, turnover, motivation, and overall productivity and innovation in an organization. Empirical literature on how newcomers become part of an organization focuses primarily on socialization and assimilation. Studies have examined how newcomers proactively seek information, how information acquisition leads to formation of social relationships and assimilation in the work environment, and how newcomers move from peripheral to full participation within a community of practice. Despite the recognition of the importance of newcomers, few studies have looked at how newcomers actually participate in online communities and what role, if any, technology plays in this process. In this special issue we plan to further explore the role of newcomers in online communities. Some Suggested Research Topics . What role does the experience that newcomers bring with them play in their participation in online communities? How do newcomers influence practices within the community? . How does a newcomer integrate into the community and move from the peripheral circles to the core of the community? . Are newcomers and their support different in different forms of online communities such as Open Source Software or Wikipedia or Citizen Science? . What lessons can we synthesize for learning analytics? . Can newcomers be classified? The special issue will consist of around 8-12 articles. All papers will undergo peer review. Submit any queries to: CHB.newcomer(a)gmail.com. Deadlines April 30, 2013 Abstract submission(optional) (500 words) Submit abstracts to: CHB.newcomer(a)gmail.com May 15, 2013 Initial notification sent to authors Aug. 31-Sept. 30, 2013 Submission of full papers (5000-10,000 words) Submit at: Elsevier system: http://ees.elsevier.com/chb/ November 30, 2013 First round of review feedback January 31, 2013 Revised submissions due March 1, 2014 Final decisions and feedback April 30, 2014 Submission of final manuscripts _______________________________________________________ Aditya Johri Assistant Professor Engineering Education Computer Science (courtesy) Industrial and Systems Engineering (courtesy) 616 McBryde Hall, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg 24061, USA. <ajohri(a)vt.edu><540-231-0653> http://filebox.vt.edu/users/ajohri _________________________________________________________

CFP: ASLIB special issue on Twitter Data Analytics
by Axel Bruns 29 Aug '13

29 Aug '13

G'day ! Folks, for those of you working in this area, a reminder that the CFP for our special issue of ASLIB Proceedings on Twitter Data Analytics closes on 15 Sep. (please forward to anyone interested): Twitter Data Analytics Aslib Proceedings (AP) has an ISI impact factor of 0.432 and is the major publication for ASLIB - the Association for Information Management in the United Kingdom - a membership association for people who manage information and knowledge in organisations and the information industry. This special 2014 Aslib Proceedings issue is guest edited by Associate Professor Axel Bruns (a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au) Queensland University of Technology and Dr Katrin Weller (katrin.weller(a)gesis.org) GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences What is the focus of this special issue? This special issue explores the possibilities and limitations of Twitter data analytics. We are particularly interested in papers that place carefully conducted studies into the wider framework of current Twitter research. Research into Twitter and its uses has been gaining momentum over the last few years, with an increasing number of studies of Twitter communities and Twitter data. Twitter's role within contemporary internet dynamics and its impact on different areas of private and public life have attracted attention. Researchers in many disciplines have been making progress in the establishment of both theories and methods for Twitter research. However, there still is a lack of comparison across individual studies and a need for commonly accepted standards in analysis and data interpretation. Twitter research is often based on rich data sets, so called big data, that can be retrieved via the Twitter API and subsequently be mined with specialised tools. This poses several challenges in theory and methods, which have been the subject of much recent discussion; the current hype around 'big data' has now also resulted in a critical response which seeks to determine the limitations of working with such only apparently comprehensive data sets and highlights the persisting value of research which draws only on 'small data'. For this special issue, we invite articles which address the opportunities and challenges of Twitter data analytics from theoretical and practical, conceptual and empirical perspectives. Topics of interest include but are not restricted to: Qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse Twitter content Evaluation of metrics and approaches for Twitter analysis Representativeness of Twitter data Comparison of data collection approaches Legal and ethical issues of Twitter research Information visualisation Twitter data retrieval and ranking Information dissemination on Twitter User behaviour and the evolution of norms and conventions Information behaviour and information literacy Linguistic analysis of Twitter content "Embedded" content on Twitter (photos, URLs) and Twitter's relations to other social networks Network analysis User surveys Usage scenarios and case studies Twitter's role for information management Submissions Papers should clearly connect their studies to the wider body of Twitter scholarship, and spell out the implications of their findings for future research. In general, only research-based submissions will be considered. Viewpoints, literature reviews or general reviews are generally not acceptable Papers should be 4,000 to 6,000 words in length (including references). Please see the author guidelines (http://www.emeraldinsight.com/products/journals/author_guidelines.htm?id=ap) for citations and references style For all additional information prior to submission, please contact Associate Professor Axel Bruns or Dr Katrin Weller Please make submissions to Aslib Proceedings using ScholarOne Manuscripts (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ap) our online submission and peer review system quoting this reference number: APCALL6 Schedule dates and submission deadlines Paper submission: 15 September 2013 Notice of review results: 15 November 2013 Revisions due: 31 December 2013 Publication: Aslib Proceedings, issue 3, 2014 -- Dr Axel Bruns http://snurb.info/ - http://mappingonlinepublics.net/ http://produsage.org/ - http://www.amazon.com/author/axel.bruns/ ARC Centre for Creative Industries and Innovation http://cci.edu.au/ Associate Professor, Media & Communication a.bruns(a)qut.edu.au Creative Industries Faculty, Z1-515, CIP Twitter: @snurb_dot_info Queensland University of Technology +61 7 31385548 Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove, Qld. 4059, Australia CRICOS No.: 00213J
