Re: [Air-L] to name reviewers or not

dear Prof Hechtl, I strongly believe the opposite: instead of "more qualitative work" (I assume you meant "quality work", we will only get very positive reviews which won't be able to sort out the gold from the wheat from the chaff -- as few people want to get added to enemies' lists PS: 5 reviewers/article seems an awful lot. *********Apologies for cross-posting************ Call for Participantion: CSCW 2014 Panels We invite you to submit proposals for panels for CSCW 2014. Please also refer to our web site (http://cscw.acm.org/participation_panel.html) for detail and updates. Panels are a great way to generate debate and raise new and interesting issues at CSCW. With panels we want to provide a forum for discussing provocative, controversial, innovative, emerging, boundary-spanning and boundary-breaking issues. While paper sessions provide detailed discussions of work recently completed, panels provide an opportunity to explore what is on the horizon - or what is already here but not adequately recognized, acknowledged or discussed. Important Dates * Monday, October 7, 2013, 5:00pm PDT: Submissions due * Thursday, November 7, 2013: Notification of acceptance Criteria for Successful Panels The best panels provide opportunities for audience participation. We especially encourage innovative formats that will: * Address relevant, critical and contemporary topics * Engage the audience and provoke discussion * Engage multiple disciplines and perspectives in productive dialog Submitting a Proposal Panel proposals should be no longer than 4 pages in the SIGCHI Extended Abstracts format. They should include: * The panel topic * Details of the panelists presented as one-paragraph biographical sketches describing their expertise * The proposed structure and format of the panel, including how you intend to encourage interaction with the audience * Technical requirements Panel submissions should be e-mailed to the Panels Co-Chairs at panels2014(a)cscw.acm.org<mailto:panels2014@cscw.acm.org>. CSCW 2014 Call for Student Volunteers
by Irina Shklovski 09 Sep '13

09 Sep '13

***Please forward to interested students at your institution*** Enrollment for CSCW 2014 student volunteers is now open! Go to http://www.chisv.org/cscw2014/news to submit your application. The deadline for registering is October 7. Student volunteers are essential to the success of the CSCW conference. In return for help at the conference, student volunteers receive a number of benefits including: * Free conference registration & reception ticket * A fabulous t-shirt sure to be the envy of all conference goers * Even more awesome SV benefits are still being planned and discussed, so stayed tune! While the volunteer duties are not always glamorous, they do provide a unique opportunity to interact closely with CSCW contributors, attendees, and other student volunteers. Volunteering provides a structured, cordial environment for students in various stages of their research career to become part of the CSCW community. Students often report that the 'social networks' they build from these meetings are the greatest benefit of being a volunteer. Indeed, it is not uncommon for future collaborations, internships/jobs, and friendships to be made through the SV experience. Qualifications: Volunteers must be undergraduate, Master's, or Ph.D. students during the 2013-2014 academic year. Students of all backgrounds, regardless of discipline, are encouraged to apply. You do not need to have a paper accepted to participate, but you will be responsible for funding your travel to and from the conference. No previous student volunteer experience is required, but we are looking for enthusiastic and reliable people. Volunteers must commit to 20 volunteer hours of work at the conference during February 15-19, 2014. Please note that enrollment in the "CHISV" system does not mean that you have been selected -- we will run a lottery and notify individuals of their status on October 14. Compiled Reading list on Alienated Labor
by Alan Bilansky 08 Sep '13

08 Sep '13

Good people, Thanks to everyone who suggested readings on uncompensated (or alienated) labor on the Internet. As promised, here is a (quick, sloppy) compilation of the suggestions I received. (Thanks in particular to Julie Chen Yujie, who sent me nearly half of these herself off-list.) Here is my list--at the bottom of this note and as a Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OoC9w-UDklwe9dALh3cFkujGG8y4QZ1nPg9HXfL… In case anyone is wondering, I haven't read them all, but here is what I know I will be using in a month or so: The Ghel essay is fairly dense, but it also allows me to get at the distinction between applications and data, one reason we have departments of informatics and computer science. The Talk be Zittrain is perfect. I'll be asking the class to watch the video and then propose a Mechanical Turk project, either creepy or merely interesting. Other readings also good. . . . Thanks again! /Alan * * * * Readings for undergrads on Alienated labor on the Internet. Complied by Alan Bilansky (University of Illinois), powered by AIR-L * Andrejevic, Mark: Social Media Exploitation” in Papacharissi (ed.) A Networked Self: Identity, Community, and Culture on Social Network Sites. Re-public: re-imagining democracy <http://www.re-public.gr/en/?p=261> [Accessed 24 January 2011]. A blog post on social media site and how it relates to the way in which capitalism accumulates surplus value. * De Vugt, G. “Dare to Edit! – the Politics of Wikipedia.” Ephemera: Theory & Politics in Organization 10, no. 1 (2010): 64-76. A piece which would be great taken together with Van Dijick et al. * Fuchs, Christian. “Labor in informational capitalism and on the Internet.” The Information Society 26, no.3 (2010): 179-196. A critical, rather theoretical work on labor issue on the Internet. Not sure if it is too dense for undergrad. Also by Fuchs: - http://fuchs.uti.at/409/ - http://fuchs.uti.at/436/ * . . . the postscript from Alexander Galloway's latest book The Interface Effect titled "We Are the Gold Farmers" to discuss unpaid microlabor. The students seemed to understand and enjoy it. http://amzn.com/0745662536 * I have found that Gehl's 2011 article "The archive and the processor: the internal logic of Web 2.0" to be popular for creating dialogue and engagement with postgrad students regarding the topic of uncompensated labour on the net. I am not sure about undergrads, but I think with some explanation of concepts it could work quite well. Don't be put off by the abstract - it is a bit dense! http://nms.sagepub.com/content/early/2011/05/12/1461444811401735.abstract * Tyler Handley: My recent paper on P2P and Google has a concise section on how Google monetizes the labour of internet users. http://peerproduction.net/issues/issue-3-free-software-epistemics/peer-revi… Sections "Wealth of Networks" & "How Google Monpolized the Wealth of Networks" * Kücklich, J. “Precarious Playbour: Modders and the Digital Games Industry.” fibreculture Journal 5 (2005). < http://journal.fibreculture.org/issue5/kucklich.html>. [Accessed 31 January 2011].A great piece on how the line between play and labor has been shifted in the game industry (although not directly related to the internet). * Jaron Lanier's "You Are Not a Gadget" has sections that address uncompensated labor. * I have used Remix by Lawrence Lessig. Very accessible reading, and Lessig talks a lot about crowdsourced labor. My undergrads liked the readings from Remix very much. * Mork Petersen, Soren (2008) « Loser Generated Content : From Participation to Exploitation », First Monday, Vol. 13, n° 3. http://firstmonday.org/article/view/2141/1948 (a very marxist point of view) * This may be a bit longer than you were looking for, but PJ Rey wrote a nice piece on Alienation, Exploitation, and UCG: http://abs.sagepub.com/content/56/4/399.abstract * Trebor Scholz: - http://www.re-public.gr/en/?p=138 * Terranova, Tiziana. “Free Labour: Producing Culture for the Digital Economy,” Social Text 18.2 (2000), 33-58. A seminal work on how unpaid labor is garnered in the earlier days of the Internet economy. * Van Dijck, J., and D. The article takes an incisive look into the myth around Wikipedia. Might be helpful to let the student understand the way in which the internet functions * It's not a reading but I've used this talk by Jonathan Zittrain before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw3h-rae3uo&feature=youtu.be It provides some great examples and he's an entertaining speaker - ideal for undergrads! * It's a bit heavy on the neo-Marxianism, and focused on the realm of consumer culture, but this Journal of Consumer Culture article by Detlev Zwick et al is my go-to on the subject. Dr. Zwick has a number of articles on this and related topics. http://www.yorku.ca/dzwick/JCC_Governmentality.pdf * -- Alan Bilansky alanbilansky(a)gmail.com (201) 743-8670

Add the contact details of reviewers to published, peer-reviewed papers
by Johann Höchtl 07 Sep '13

07 Sep '13

Dear colleagues, I get regulary invited to review papers. I like reviewing papers, good written papers enlarge my expertise (and even "bad" ones almost ever have stgh. to offer) I take reviews serious, even when I decide to reject a submission. Good comments addressing scientific rigor, reasoning and style, can be a tremendous help to improve a paper for a later submission. At the same time I hope to get meaningful reviews for papers I am co-authoring. Our department is running a scientific journal. Submission are reviewed by ~5 reviewers and we regularly receive reviews which vary quality-wise in broad ranges, from thoroughly carried out to a mere "good written". Some of them might be unacceptable (thus ~5reviews per submission). Sure, it is our liability to carefully select reviewers. And most of the time reviews are voluntary carried out in spare time. However, apart from these arguments justifying hasty reviews, what strikes me is the fact that the reviewers identities are kept in secrecy. Bachelor, master & PhD-thesis all carry the supervisor in bold letters. Peer-reviewed papers (or journals) for which the gentle reader might have to pay prices up into the hundreds of <your currency> though keep the reviewers, which are rampart to keep quality, in clandestine. I don't know where this habit comes from, but it must be somewhere deeply enshrined, as I am not aware of a style manual which describes where to put and how to format reviewer contact details of papers (though there might be such). Knowing the reviewers of papers, both the authors as well as the reader, has a couple of advantages: * The reviewer is more obliged to deliver qualitative work as the paper is under public scrutiny in respect to her / his effort put into reviewing the paper. * The reviewer is especially obliged to the authors as her / his verdict will have to be carefully justified. * These forces will increase the quality of a papers. * It will encourage scientific discourse Though there are also possible disadvantages: * There might be less papers published as reviews will be carried out with increased rigor and reviewers more tending to reject than to approve to avoid qualitative discussions afterwards. I for one will start to discuss this topic with our journal editors and gather their opinions. This is a general topic and should this be inappropriate for this mailing list I apologize and will put it on a blog. CfP 3D printing: social and cultural trajectories symposium, 5 Dec 2013, Melbourne, Australia
by Angela Daly 07 Sep '13

07 Sep '13

*3D printing: social and cultural trajectories* A one-day symposium organised by the Swinburne Institute for Social Research Thursday 5 December 2013 Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn campus Melbourne, Australia The increasingly accessible technology of 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is the focus of this interdisciplinary event. In recent years, inexpensive printers have allowed users to fabricate items that would otherwise be conventionally produced in specialised, remote factories. With this capability comes a range of questions for social and cultural analysis: How are people using 3D printing technology? What legal and policy frameworks shape its development? How are its capabilities differently imagined by consumers, regulators, experts and enthusiasts? What kinds of markets and practitioner communities are forming around the technology? The symposium aims to open up an exploratory conversation around these and other issues, connecting researchers from across the humanities, social sciences and design. We invite proposals for short papers and panel discussions. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): -3D printing and intellectual property -amateur and hacker involvement in 3D printing -intermediaries and emerging markets -policy and regulatory challenges -technology and industry disruption -3D printing and material culture -aesthetics of 3D printing -comparative histories of print Proposals, including a 300-word abstract, are due by Friday 13 September 2013. Successful contributors will be notified of the acceptance of their proposal by 30 September 2013. Please send abstracts to acdaly(a)swin.edu.au <mailto:acdaly@swin.edu.au> We plan to publish the proceedings of the symposium electronically and record presentations for online streaming.
