Looked on the AoIR archives but didn't locate the keynotes. I remember Richard Ling faced a bit of flack while speaking - leaving the other excellent female professor's keynote a bit backgrounded. Good lesson in salience! Thanks heaps. Sorry to clutter inboxes for such a small detail and much appreciated if anyone still has the .pdf of the program to hand. Denise ? Dr Denise N. UPDATE: JCAL Special Issue on 'Learning Analytics in Massively Multiuser Games, Virtual Environments and Courses' (clarification of scope and extension of proposal-submission deadline)
by Lee, Mark 14 Sep '13

14 Sep '13

Dear colleagues, Following the posting of the Call for Papers for the abovementioned special issue of the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, several prospective authors have enquired as to what constitutes a 'massive' number of learners for the purposes of the special issue. While this special issue is intended to be about the use of learning analytics with very large numbers (hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands) of students, scholars who have conducted or are conducting studies with slightly smaller student numbers should not be discouraged from submitting proposals – particularly if they are able to show proof of concept for larger-scale applications. The editors are especially likely to consider studies on learning analytics in immersive simulations, games and virtual worlds involving fewer participants, since the use of such environments as part of massive courses remains in its infancy. However, it will be necessary for the authors to include a detailed discussion of how what is being reported or proposed might be scaled to accommodate a 'massive' situation. The deadline for the submission of proposals (500-word abstracts plus 7-10 key references) has now been extended by one week, to 7 October 2013. The deadline for submission of full manuscripts remains at 27 January 2014. The Call for Papers has been updated accordingly: http://goo.gl/2STf3V . Kindly share this with others at your institutions and within your networks who you think might be interested. Once again, queries should be directed to jcal.specialissues(a)gmail.com , but note that proposals and full manuscripts are not to be sent to this address (see the Call for Papers for submission instructions). Kind regards, Paul A. Kirschner (Open University of the Netherlands), JCAL Editor-in-Chief Liesbeth Kester (Open University of the Netherlands), JCAL Associate Editor Mark J. W. Lee (Charles Sturt University), JCAL Editor-in-Charge of Special Issues

Request for Information Relevant to Online Dating within Student Populations
by skaidra puodziunas 13 Sep '13

13 Sep '13

Hello fello AOIR's, Pleased to "meet" you all. My name is Skaidra Puodziunas and I'm in 4th year as an undergraduate in an innovative and atypical bachelor degree program of Knowledge Integration, with a cross major in Speech Communication, at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada This coming year, I will be working on my 4th year, senior thesis project. I am planning to explore the world of online dating, specifically examining the factors that are associated with students engaging in online dating platforms, in my own university. If anyone has any recommendations for journals, blogs, researchers, institutes, etc. that could be relevant to this topic, I graciously welcome them all! I consider this more of an exploratory project. I am (hopefully) going to incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Many thanks for your time, Skaidra Skaidra Puodziunas | @SkaidraP 4A Joint Honors Knowledge Integration & Speech Communication University of Waterloo

reading on surveilance
by Burcu Bakioglu 13 Sep '13

13 Sep '13

Hi all, I am looking for suggestions on a student friendly reading on surveillance, something that gives the overall picture, and any interesting readings on the latest NSA incident. Having said that, I should note that I have some materials in my hands, I just can't decide what would be engaging in a classroom setting, hence my query... Any experiences on that regard? Many thanks! -- Thanks, Burcu S. Bakioglu, Ph.D. Postdoctoral Fellow in New Media Lawrence University http://www.palefirer.com -- Come to the dark side, we have cookies!
