October 2014) > > www.pdc2014.org > > Join us in Windhoek, Namibia in 2014 to celebrate the 13thParticipatory Design Conference (PDC). > The conference theme of the PDC 2014 is “Reflecting connectedness”. We are currently experiencing a > technologically pushed trend in ‘being always connected’. This is manifested in a number of designed > artifacts, such as smart-phones, social networks, computer supported cooperative work and distributed > working tools.By ‘reflecting connectedness’ in PD, we acknowledge influential relations across > continents, societies, people, disciplines and time, beyond the direct involvement of > stakeholders. While PD has evolved as a discipline on its own, we should continuously reflect on > interrelations of theories and practices within and across the field and thereby enriching PD within a > wider context. We must further engage in critical debates of what it means to design within and for a > multilayered network, such as the on-line world versus off-line interactions, the blurring distinction of > designers and users, researchers and artists, design and research ‘in the wild’, designing for social > justice, inclusiveness, and sustainability. We invite authors to deliberate on these relations within and > beyond the field of PD, which affect its conceptualization and practices all over. > The 2014 PDC seeks to attract submissions from different disciplines, academics, practitioners and > artists in form of tutorials, workshops, doctorial consortiums, participatory art encounters, papers, and > industry cases. > > Important dates: > > Conference dates: 6. – 10. 2nd CFP: special Issue Philosophy & Technology on “Information Societies, Ethical Enquiries”
by Mariarosaria Taddeo 18 Sep '13

18 Sep '13

*Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on Information Societies, Ethical Enquiries* * * *GUEST EDITORS* Elizabeth Buchanan & Mariarosaria Taddeo *INTRODUCTION* The experiences of individuals living in contemporary information societies are tightly interwoven with the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Social, recreational and professional lives cannot be separated from online activities and interactions. At the same time, ICTs in particular, and informational infrastructures in general, have become crucial for the welfare, governance and security of societies themselves. The so-called information revolution has profoundly changed individual, societal, and professional lives. Such changes have generated an extensive policy vacuum concerning both the regulation of new aspects of individuals’ existence and the management of information-dependent societies. Discussions and analyses focusing on both conceptual and applied ethical issues concerning the changes prompted by the information revolution are incontrovertibly deemed a crucial, if not necessary, step in the process of filling such a vacuum. A series of conferences on Computer Ethics: Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) organised over the past decade by the International Society for Ethics & Information Technology (INSEIT) has propelled complex and confounding ethical problems related to the information revolution to the fore by fostering discussion and debates and disseminating possible solutions to these problems. Following the organization of the eleventh CEPE, held at Autónoma University, in Lisbon (Portugal), from July 1st-3rd 2013 ( http://www.cepe2013.com) a special issue of Springer’s Philosophy & Technology is planned . *TOPICS* We solicit the submission of philosophically-oriented papers that investigate topics such as trust in digital environments; security in the cyber sphere and its relation to individual rights such as privacy, anonymity and freedom of speech; ethical implications of online surveillance; and the conceptual and ethical issues related to governance in the information societies. Areas of relevance include information and computer ethics, (philosophy of) law, political sciences, Internet studies, cyber security and STS. *The special issue is open to:* • Authors who presented a paper at CEPE 2013 are invited to submit an original, recently revised, version of their paper. • Other interested authors are invited to submit original papers related to the topics mentioned above. • Papers submitted for this Call must not have been published previously in academic journals or article collections. However, submissions may be new elaborations of ideas previously developed in such publications, as long as they represent new, original papers. * * *TIMETABLE* *November 1, 2013*: Deadline papers submissions *December 1, 2013*: Deadline reviews papers *January 15, 2014*: Deadline revised papers *2014*: Publication of the special issue *SUBMISSION DETAILS* To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select as article type: "SI on Information Societies, Ethical Enquiries” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editors. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions. * * *For any further information please contact:* Elizabeth Buchanan: buchanane(a)uwstout.edu Mariarosaria Taddeo: M.Taddeo(a)warwick.ac.uk -- Dr. Mariarosaria Taddeo Research Fellow in Cyber Security and Ethics, PAIS, University of Warwick Research Associate - Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, University of Oxford President, International Association for Computing and Philosophy http://taddeo.philosophyofinformation.net/index.html

Recruiting participants via the social media platform Twitter
by Janet Salmons, Ph.D. 17 Sep '13

Lee, You don't mention whether the study is qualitative or quantitative, or what kind of data collection you want to conduct.... In *Online Interviews in Real Time *I discuss recruitment strategies that might be appropriate. (I don't put the "brand" names into my writing since they aren't paying me for advertising and brands change.) Just curious-- why is Twitter the appropriate place to recruit participants for what kind of study about what topic? Why do you feel Twitter users are the right participants? Will you miss potential participants who are not on Twitter or who miss your post? One idea is to create an online research presence using something like a free blog/wiki site, and post some key info such as: an introduction, an overview of your study in non-academese, expectations for participants, plans to safeguard privacy of participants, informed consent procedures, etc. Include a link to your university or the book/journal site if you have a publication plan. Importantly, Then, when you post on Twitter, Linked In etc. you can provide all the info someone needs by providing a link to your researcher blog. Once you get rolling, you can also use this site to offer information to participants (and/or your PhD committee!) about the study's progress. Feel free to contact me offline if you have questions-- or nab me in Denver. Happy recruiting! The case study is part of the lead project «Circulation of Cultural Goods» (http://www.hiig.de/en/project/zirkulation-von-kulturgutern/) which investigates the entanglement of social, technical and legal rules and practices regarding the creation and dissemination of cultural goods. With empirically grounded case studies (a complementary study addresses TV and online formats) we seek to substantiate current debates on copyright issues from a dedicated social science perspective. The study on the gaming sector specifically addresses the tension between innovation and imitation in the context of considerable legal uncertainty and complexity. How do the actors in this high-revenue industry accomplish innovation and monetization under these circumstances? Where is the line between legitimate inspiration and illegitimate plagiarism and how is it drawn? These questions will be addressed both on the discursive level of expert debates as well as on the level of everyday practices in game development. _Responsibilities & Duties_ The successful applicant will operationalize and conduct a case study on digital games in close collaboration with our research team. In addition, complementary contributions to grant proposals and short-term projects are possible. _Qualifications_ • A degree in social sciences or cultural studies (especially political science, communication studies, sociology). • A strong interest in digital games – and ideally also in current developments regarding internet regulation (esp. copyright) and network infrastructure. • Knowledgeable about relevant scientific literature and concepts (e.g. game studies, regulation of information goods, internet governance, science and technology studies, sociology) as well as surrounding policy debates. • Experience conducting empirical studies and relevant methods is preferred (esp. discourse analysis, ethnographic accounts, practice theory) • Fluent in both English and German. _Working Environment_ The research activities of the growing Institute in Berlin provide excellent conditions to develop your own research ideas and to advance a range of research projects related to the study of Internet and Society. Our interdisciplinary-oriented projects are planned and implemented in small teams, working in an office located in the heart of Berlin. The Institute has a strong international focus, hence, international applicants are especially welcome. _Application_ Please submit your application electronically via the application form provided on the Institute's Website: http://www.hiig.de/en/Research-position-for-imitation-and-innovation-in-the… The application should contain your CV and any relevant publications, blogs or blog posts, or a web site you may have. Application review will begin start on October 10, 2012 and the search will remain open until the position is filled. You are welcome to direct your questions to Project Lead Christian Katzenbach (katzenbach(a)hiig.de) _Background_ The research area Internet Policy & Governance – in which this position is located – focuses on public and private forms of ordering processes. We are especially interested in the interplay of socio-cultural, technical and legal norms shaping the development of the Internet. The research program aims to extend the debates about Internet regulation by a genuine social science approach, embedding the analysis of modes of coordination, emergent public and networks into socio-technical contexts by means of science and technology studies (STS).
