Thanks all! Many have responded to me personally, and thank you. And thanks for the lesson sent on internet archiving! (I did check aoir.org) and noted that I got the incorrect year (blush). But it was great to hear from some of you - I miss AoIR, and hope the floods let up in Boulder! Travel safe! Cheers, Denise Dr Denise N. CFP Journal of Peer Production: peer production, disruption and the law
by Angela Daly 16 Sep '13

16 Sep '13

CFP - Special issue of the Journal of Peer Production Peer production, disruption and the law* Editors: Steve Collins, Macquarie University and Angela Daly, Swinburne University of Technology The disruption caused by new technologies and non-conventional methods of organisation have posed challenges for the law, confronting regulators with the need to balance justice with powerful interests. Experience from the "disruptions" of the late 20th century has shown that the response from incumbent industries can lead to a period of intense litigation and lobbying for laws that will maintain the status quo. For example, following its "Napster moment", the music industry fought to maintain its grip on distribution channels through increased copyright enforcement and the longer copyright terms it managed to extract from the legislative process. The newspaper industry has similarly seen its historical revenue stream of classified ads disrupted by more efficient online listings, and responded to its own failure to capitalise on online advertising by launching legal campaigns against Google News in various European countries. Though the law as it stands may not be well-equipped to deal with disruptive episodes, the technological innovations of the last twenty years have created an environment that generates disruption. The Internet, the Web and networked personal computers have converged into the ubiquitous post-PC media device, leaving twentieth century paradigms of production, consumption and distribution under considerable threat. The latest technology to be added to this group of disruptive innovations may be 3D-printing, which in recent times has become increasingly available and accessible to users in developed economies, whilst the manufacturing capacity of 3D-printers has dramatically grown. Although current offerings on the market are far from a Star Trek-like "replicator", the spectre of disruption has once again arrived, with the prospect of 3D-printed guns inspiring a moral panic and raising questions of gun control, regulation, jurisdiction and effective control. In addition, 3D-printing raises a number of issues regarding intellectual property, going far beyond the copyright problems that file-sharing brought about due to its production of physical objects. This special issue of the Journal of Peer Production calls for papers that deal with the intersection of peer production, disruptive technologies and the law. Potential topics include, but are not restricted to: ? The threat posed by peer production to legacy industries ? The regulation of disruptive technologies through the rule of law or embedded rights management ? Lobbying strategies of incumbent players to stymie disruptive technologies ? Emergent economies or practices as a result of disruptive technologies ? Extra-legal norm formation in peer production communities around disruptive technologies ? Historical perspectives on the legal status of collaborative projects ? Critical legal approaches to technology, disruption and peer production ? The role and ability of the law (which differs across jurisdictions) in regulating autonomous production ? The resilience of law in the face of social and technological change ? The theories and assumptions which continue to underpin laws rendered obsolete by social and technological change 500-word abstracts are due by 15th November 2013 and should be sent todisruptlawissue(a)peerproduction.net. Accepted submissions will be notified during December 2013 and full papers are due by 12th May 2014. The issue will be published in January 2015. free Communication and Information Technologies ASA (CITASA) section memberships for students
by Earl, Jennifer Suzanne - (jenniferearl) 16 Sep '13

16 Sep '13

Hi folks, We are running a student membership drive right now. If you know of any students who are already ASA members that might like a free CITASA membership, please have them fill out the online form at the following address to receive a free section membership: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dE1DbGhWc3ctN2FkYTQxc1… The deadline is 9/20 for requesting a free membership. Please note: we can only provide the free section memberships, so the student must already be a member of the ASA, but that is true for all students who attended the annual meetings in NYC already. As background, the number of panels that we get as a section at each ASA is directly determined by section membership. Thus, each membership is important to maintaining a vibrant space for research on communications and technology. If we can get about 40-50 students to request free section memberships (which is not unusual), we are likely to go over the 400 member mark for the first time in our history and get an additional session at the 2014 ASAs! So, we really hope you will forward this to any student who might be eligible and implore them to fill out this online form. Thanks so much for your help in this effort! Best, Jennifer Earl Chair of the CITASA Section *********************************** Jennifer Earl Professor of Sociology Social Sciences 421 University of Arizona Tucson, AZ 85721-0027 Phone: (520) 621-3296 ***********************************

CFP: Surveillance, Games and Play Deadline Extension
by Jennifer Whitson 16 Sep '13

16 Sep '13

Hi All, Due to popular demand, we are extending the CFP for the special issue of Surveillance & Society<http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/surveillance-and-society/announceme…>on surveillance, games and play for an extra 10 days. The extended deadline for submissions is Wednesday September 25th. The full CFP is below. *CFP Surveillance, Games and Play The games we play on our computers, iPads, and video game consoles are watching us. They track our every online move and send data on who we are, how we play, and whom we play with back to game and virtual world publishers such as Sony and Microsoft. Two events in the summer of 2011 exemplify the need to study surveillance in games: a hacker attack against Sony's Playstation Network compromised over 77 million user accounts including credit card numbers, while iPhone users discovered hidden code in their devices that tracked their movements and secretly sent this data back to Apple. This form of consumer surveillance that targets players has eluded critical appraisal in both the games studies and surveillance literature. The games we play are not only watching us, but are leveraging surveillance to mold us into better students, workers, and consumers, as evidenced by the growth of gamification applications that combine playful design and feedback mechanisms from games with users' social profiles (e.g. Facebook, twitter, and LinkedIn) in non-game applications explicitly geared to drive behavioural change. Accordingly, traditional surveillance activities are transformed through their combination with playful frames of reference and game-like elements. Yet, as argued by Anders Albrechtslund and Lynsey Dubbeld in volume 3(2/3) of this journal, surveillance is fun. It is an essential component of many games and virtual worlds. It enables family to find each other and play together online, such as when adult children who live thousands of miles away challenge their parents to a *Words with Friends *scrabble match over Facebook. Surveillance allows game companies to match strangers with similar skill sets and play-styles together in multiplayer games, thus increasing the flow of the game and players' mutual enjoyment. Surveillance facilitates coordinated teamwork and sophisticated game economies, exemplified by informational tools such as the damage mods and kill-point monitors created by players for massively-multiplayer online games. Surveillance also makes online games and virtual worlds safe for children and young adults, restricting both the use of inappropriate language and content, as well as prohibiting the entry of potentially dangerous adults. Moreover, surveillance is pleasurable. As game company Valve found when they forayed into biometrics (i.e. measuring galvanic skin response and arousal levels), players are more engaged when they can see how they affect their opponents' own physiological responses. We, as players, like to watch our opponents, anticipating what they will do next. We also use surveillance to improve our prowess and extend our moments of victory by using recording software and game replay functions This theme issue is dedicated to balancing two very different sides of surveillance: surveillance as a technology of corporate governance and surveillance as a technology of pleasure and play. *Possible research areas might include (but are not limited to):* - The role of surveillance in enabling play and games - The role of play and games in normalizing surveillance - Surveillance as gameplay or surveillance as a game mechanic - Playful surveillance applications - Playful representations of surveillance - Playful resistance to surveillance - Issues of identity, anonymity and pseudonymity in online games and virtual worlds - Online visibilities and the relationship between game publishers and user populations - The implications of using data gathered in-game for non-game applications - The use of surveillance and the representation of surveillance in online games, virtual worlds, and/or gamified applications, including topics such as: - Games that educate users about privacy and surveillance - End-User Licensing Agreements, Terms of Service, and awareness of surveillance - Applications of social networking services, locational data, and GPS devices in games and play - Uses of data gathering services, screen-capture tools, and recorded gameplay sessions - The surveillance of children and youth in virtual worlds and games - State and police use of in-game data for surveillance, tracking, behavioral profiling etc. - Surveillance and the competitive, professional e-sports gaming industry - Data mining, game metrics, and targeted advertising in the game industry This is not intended to be an exclusive listing of possibilities for this edition. Other possibilities are welcomed and encouraged and can be discussed in advance with the guest-editors: Jennifer R.Whitson< j.whitson(a)concordia.ca>and Bart Simon <bart.simon(a)concordia.ca>. All papers must be submitted through the online submission system no later than *September 25th 2013*, for publication in *March 2014.* Click here< http://library.queensu.ca/ojs/index.php/surveillance-and-society/announceme…>for further information on submissions. Thanks, Jennifer R. Whitson, PhD Postdoctoral Fellow, Technoculture Arts and Games Research Centre Concordia University Montreal, Canada
