AAG 2014 CFP: Future Directions in Geoweb Research alt.conference
by Jim T 11 Sep '13

11 Sep '13

Apologies for cross-posting, this may be of interest to some people on this list. *Future Directions in Geoweb Research: an alt.conference on Big Data, Theory, and Geography's Role* Call for Participants: Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting 8-12 April 2014 Tampa, FL USA Organizers (alphabetical by last name): Josef Eckert, University of Washington Andrew Shears, Mansfield University Jim Thatcher, Clark University Over the last two decades, widespread internet access integrated into daily life as a platform for information exchange, social networking, and commercial transactions. The expansive, rapidly changing data sets produced through these and other digital processes have come to be termed "Big Data." With an estimated 80% of these aggregated data sets containing spatial referent information, Geography as a discipline offers a "home field advantage" in the study of "Big Data" (Pozdnoukhov and Farmer 2012). The addition of "where" to information that records who is doing what, when, and with whom opens new avenues for knowledge and capital production (probably want a citation here). In the eyes of its boosters, the rapid aggregation and analysis of data destroys the need for social explanation as the numbers are able to "speak for themselves" (Anderson 2008). While Big Data and the Geoweb are oft heralded as a veritable gold mine for private industry and a tantalizing new source of data for social research, the rapid development of these technologies in the face of the often personal nature of the derived data is of concern. Studies of the geoweb call our attention to the ways in which user-generated data come into the world and are complicit in its unfolding. Scholars have voiced caution regarding the use of spatial big data, citing issues of accuracy (Liu et. al 2013), heterogenous data and sources, (Goodchild 2012), surveillance (Crampton 2013), shifting privacies (Elwood & Leczynszki 2011), capital investment (Wilson 2012), and urban experience (Thatcher 2013). In spite of this, urban planners (Torrens 2010), politicians (Morozov 2011), marketers (LeValle et al., 2011), and even national funding agencies (NSF 2012) are embracing the modeling of this data as a primary tool by which to understand society. This alt.conference will explore many of the broad implications of Big Data and the Geoweb and its study, including: - Big Data, the Geoweb, and the Critical GIS tradition - New methodologies for gathering and analyzing data - The epistemologies and ontologies of Big Data and the Geoweb - Big Data and the Geoweb as tools for education - Big Data and Geoweb for policy and spatial decision-making - Big Data and urban experience - Big Data and Geoweb as a tool for community planning - Amateur practitioners of Big Data analytics - Activist appropriation of Big Data platforms - Geographies of Big Data beyond GIS - Gendered Big Data - Big Data as Digital Humanities - Data mining vs. data exploration As well as other related topics. The alt.conference will feature a series of sessions of five-minute "lightning talks," each followed by panel and workshop sessions that link the themes discussed to theory and praxis. These sessions will run consecutively on the first day of the AAG conference, and will be capped by an evening networking gathering. Unlike the AAG"s traditional 15-minute papers, a lightning talk is an engaging five-minute presentation that quickly examines intensive subject matter by heavy use of simple but arresting graphics and visuals. The goal is to provide the audience with an entertaining way to absorb information on a number of topics. Traditionally, the presenter spends roughly a minute on each slide. Because these talks do not fit into the AAG"s traditional format, lightning talks do not preclude the presentation of a manuscript or poster elsewhere in the conference. In other words, a lightning talk does not preclude you from given a traditional talk elsewhere at the conference. Scholars interested in giving a lightning talk as part of the alt.conference are asked to submit an abstract or position paper of no longer than 500 words, plus any preliminary graphics, to ashears(a)mansfield.edu by Oc**tober 15, 2013. Submissions are particularly encouraged from scholars early in their career, from disadvantaged populations and from the developing world.

CFP: Special issue of Computational Culture on Rhetoric and Computation
by Annette Vee 10 Sep '13

10 Sep '13

CFP: Special Issue of Computational Culture on Rhetoric and Computation Rhetoric has historically been a discipline concerned with the ways that spoken and written language shape human activity. Similarly, emerging work in digital media studies (in areas such as software studies, critical code studies, and platform studies) seeks to describe the ways that computation shapes contemporary life. This special issue of Computational Culture on "Rhetoric and Computation" merges these two modes of inquiry to explore how together they can help us to understand ways that our communication and computational activities are now constituted by both human and computer languages. Coupling the analysis of rhetoric with computation provokes a number of questions: How is the rhetorical force of computational objects different from or similar to that of language, sound, or image? What new modes of communication open up when we view computation as an expressive medium? How does computation shape or constrain rhetorical action? What new tropes, figures, and strategies emerge in computational environments? How do programmers deploy rhetoric at the level of code and interface? These questions are not exhaustive, and we welcome papers or computational projects that pursue these questions and others like them. Topics or projects might include: - Computational artifacts (such as videogames or art installations) designed to make procedural arguments and model systems or phenomena - Analysis of multiple choice tests processed by computers as rhetorical artifacts, aimed at both human (citizens, students) and nonhuman (machine) audiences. - How computational strategies such as surveillance supercede more traditional spheres of rhetorical deliberation such as written law - The ways in which computational data interpellate individuals and define citizenship - Strategies of the "quantified self" as a way of shaping human behavior - Rhetorical analysis of computational systems used by governmental, educational, and political entities - How computational systems are described for different audiences from groups of expert programmers to the general public - The use of software algorithms to simulate and evaluate various activities, such as writing and conversation - Rhetorical strategies deployed by communities of programmers and designers in marginal comments, online forums or physical workplaces - Analysis of computational machines as rhetors (i.e., understanding the actions of such machines in terms of the tropes, figures, and strategies they deploy) 300 word abstracts are due November 25, 2013. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Computational Culture Editorial Board and the special issue editors. Authors of selected abstracts will be notified by January 31, 2014 and invited to submit full manuscripts by April 1, 2014. These manuscripts are subject to outside peer review according to Computational Culture's policies. The issue will be published Fall 2014. by Christine Hine 10 Sep '13

10 Sep '13

VISITING INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP in social research methods for visits in calendar year 2014 http://www.soc.surrey.ac.uk/research/vif.htm <https://email.surrey.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=574f960cc13d4ccc9f4a5b3d36139fa 0&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.soc.surrey.ac.uk%2fresearch%2fvif.htm> The Department of Sociology at the University of Surrey, Guildford, United Kingdom, has established a Visiting International Fellowship (VIF) to foster the development of sociological research methods. Between one and three Fellowships are awarded by competition each year. Applicants for the Fellowship will be established scholars in social science with a track record in a field of social research methodology. They will normally hold, or recently have held, an established academic appointment in social science. The Fellowship committee regrets that it cannot consider applications from candidates seeking training or the updating of methodological skills. The VIF is intended for established scholars who are normally at least 5 years post doctorate. Former VIF holders include: David Morgan (Portland State), David De Vaus (La Trobe), Ed Brent (Missouri), Norman Blaikie (Emeritus, Universiti Sains Malaysia), Irwin Deutscher (Akron), Edith de Leeuw (Utrecht), Seppo Laaksonen (Helsinki), Luis Antunes (Lisbon), Ming Yan (Beijing), Cesar Cisneros (Mexico), Tom W Smith (Chicago), Bob Belli (Lincoln), Jin-Kyu Jung (Grand Forks), Carl Roberts (Iowa), Warren Thorngate (Ottawa), Linda Williams (Massachusetts Lowell) and Gerd Wagner (Germany). The awards are open to those who would value the opportunity to advance methodological understanding, for example by reflecting on methods used in previous empirical research, by validating existing or new methodological procedures, or by reviewing and synthesising methodological approaches. 'Methods' may be interpreted widely, to include, for example, statistical techniques and conversation and discourse analysis. Proposals for collaborative research with members of the Department of Sociology are especially welcome. Applications from female and ethnic minority candidates are particularly encouraged. An award of £2,500 will be made as a contribution towards travel and subsistence expenses incurred in holding the Fellowship. It is expected that VIF award-holders will normally be on paid leave of absence from their employment. Award-holders should be prepared to visit the Department on one or two occasions during the academic year with a duration of about one month in total. VIFs will become honorary Research Fellows of the University of Surrey and be entitled to use the University Library and make use of University facilities. The holder of a Fellowship is usually permanently resident outside the United Kingdom. The Department of Sociology at Surrey is a centre of methodological expertise and specialises in research methods for the application of social research to contemporary society. It promotes high methodological standards and new developments in methodology for the social science research community. The Department is the home of CAQDAS <https://email.surrey.ac.uk/owa/redir.aspx?C=574f960cc13d4ccc9f4a5b3d36139fa 0&URL=http%3a%2f%2fcaqdas.soc.surrey.ac.uk%2f> , an internationally acclaimed centre for Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software, and is well known for its work on the secondary analysis of large data sets, and work on online research methods. CFP: "Translation and international professional communication: Building bridges and strengthening skills"
by connexions journal 09 Sep '13

09 Sep '13

*Translation and international professional communication:* *Building bridges and strengthening skills* CFP at: http://connexionsj.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/translation-and-internationa… <http://connexionsj.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/translation-and-internationa…> <http://connexionsj.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/translation-and-internationa…> Guest editors: *Bruce Maylath **North Dakota State University, USA **Marta Pacheco Pinto **Centre for Comparative Studies, Portugal **Ricardo Muñoz Martín **University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain* The globalization and the fast mobility of today’s markets—aiming to serve as many heterogeneous settings and audiences as possible—have posited a growing need for high quality products and optimal performance in nearly all areas of everyday life. Specialists in communication play an important, albeit often hidden, role in these processes. Translators and other international professional communicators operate as mediators to facilitate understanding across global, international, national and local contexts through diverse communication channels. Translating today often involves several agents with different roles, responsibilities and skills. This entails creative work, various innovative procedures, and collaborative networks in highly technological, distributed environments. All these agents can be seen as text producers with an increasing expertise in the tools and skills of their trades to find, manage, process, and adapt information to target audiences. Despite disperse attempts at acknowledging the importance of approaching professional communication as translation or as involving translation-related skills (e.g., Hoft 1995; Weiss 1995, 1997; Melton 2008), translation often remains invisible both in the literature and in the training of (international) professional communicators. The extant literature in Communication Studies that actually addresses translation usually tends to emphasize, and concentrate on, localization issues, and it often draws from functional approaches to translation as production of a communicative message or instrument (e.g., Vermeer 1996; Nord 1997; Reiss 2000). In Translation Studies, on the other hand, there is an increasing awareness of the need to tend bridges to Communication Studies in research (e.g., Risku 2010; Ehrensberger-Dow & Daniel 2013). However, more dialogue seems necessary to fully grasp the implications and commonalities in all areas of multilingual professional communication, not the least that they are usually ascribed peripheral roles in business, technical, and scientific endeavors. The emerging figure of the multitasked professional communicator has brought translation as part of the document production process to a different level of discussion. It is drawing increasing attention to translators’ profiles and training as competent communicators and vice versa, thus showing that the role translation plays in international professional communication, and the role of international professional communication in translator training cannot be downplayed (Gnecchi et al., 2011). This issue of the *conne**x**ions *journal seeks to build bridges of cross-disciplinary understanding between international professional communication scholars and practitioners and translation scholars and practitioners. It aims to foster debate around the *role of translation as a special kind of international professional communication and also as an integral part of other (international) professional communication instances* . Suggested *topic areas *include, but are not limited to: - University-level training of international professional communicators, its adjustment to market and translation demands, pedagogical challenges to collaborative work. - Curriculum design, (communication and translation) skill development and performance assessment. - Communicative purposes and settings and their impact on translation norms, process and associated abilities. - Ethics and other deontological considerations. - Team work, translation companies and quality-control procedures. - Localization, computer-assisted translation, post-editing and international professional communication. - Localization, multilanguage content delivery, language and communication audit (LCA). - Translating the verbal and the visual in international professional communication (case studies, overall considerations). *Abstracts *to be developed into - Original research articles of 5,000 to 7,000 words of body text. - Review articles of 3,000 to 5,000 words of body text. - Focused commentary and industry perspectives articles of 500 to 3,000 words of body text. - Teaching cases of 3,000 to 5,000 words of body text on the interface between translation and communication are invited (*deadline for submissions *is October 10, 2014). *Submission procedures*: - Prepare the cover page and manuscript with 1.5 line spacing and Georgia, 12-point font. - Save the cover page and manuscript in doc, docx, or rtf format. - Cover page containing your name, institutional affiliation, and email address. - 500-word abstract for original research articles, review articles, and teaching cases; 250-word abstracts for focused commentary and industry perspectives. - Whether you are submitting a research article, a review article, industry perspective article, or teaching case. - Submit via email to Bruce Maylath, Marta Pacheco Pinto and Ricardo Muñoz Martín at trans.profcommunication(a)gmail.com<trans.profcommunication(a)gmail.com?subject=> Upon acceptance of your proposal, you will be invited to submit your manuscript.
