Help finding admissions people
by Alexander Halavais 29 Aug '13

29 Aug '13

Hello, All, I hate emails recruiting participants that go out to the list. But here I go. We are trying to find admissions people: those who work in a regular capacity evaluating students who are applying for university study. This might include admissions officers, transcript evaluators, and other academic staff and faculty who directly evaluate applications materials. We are looking from both undergraduate and graduate admissions folks, and so if you are a faculty member who regularly makes admissions decisions based on application materials we want you. "For what" you might ask? Just to chat, with a group of your peers, about potential alternative forms of credentials and markers of experience. It will take 90 minutes of your time, at most, and a webcam and the ability to use Google Hangouts. If you are willing, please go to: http://bit.ly/altadmit Or, if you know someone who would be, please forward this to them. Thank you! Alex -- -- // // This email is // [x] assumed public and may be blogged / forwarded. // [ ] assumed to be private, please ask before redistributing. // // Alexander C. Call for Papers and Creative Works: InVisible Culture, Issue 21: "Pursuit"
by Anderson, Joel Neville 28 Aug '13

28 Aug '13

Dear all, Please circulate the latest CFP for my graduate program's journal, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture (attached as a PDF and pasted below). Best regards, Joel Neville Anderson PhD Student, Visual and Cultural Studies University of Rochester http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-invisible-culture-issue-21-pursuit InVisible Culture Issue 21 - "Pursuit" For its twenty-first issue, InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture invites scholarly articles and creative works that address the topic of pursuit . We encourage authors and artists to reflect on the meaning and mechanics of pursuit across broad ranging phenomena. This term is meant to address two larger and related concerns. First, it prompts a discussion about matters of narrative, aesthetics, and medium, including topics as specific as the ‘chase film’ and crime narratives, to those as seemingly abstract as failure, paranoia, and process. Second, the word pursuit is meant to direct thinking toward a number of more clearly socio-political concerns, including, but not limited to, the topics of work and profession. In his new book, 24/7: Late Capitalism and the End of Sleep , Jonathan Crary worriedly observes that in the current global paradigm “the highest premium is placed on activity for its own sake,” and that it is the pursuit of sleep that stands as the most meaningful form of resistance in this context. We offer the term pursuit as a thematic framework for considering the manifold forms our embeddedness in a fully-networked, around-the-clock habitus can take, and how these forms bear not only on our positions as workers, professionals, and laborers, but also as active subjects. We welcome papers and artworks that address, complicate, and expand these models of pursuit . Some possible topics of exploration are (but not limited to): * Purpose and purposelessness, means without ends * The “pursuit” of media: transmediality; new media; medium specificity; the myth of total cinema; pursuit of perfect software (FOSS, cloud storage, smartphone apps, etc.) * Paranoia, surveillance, cyberstalking * Detective fiction * Gaming culture * Futurity and speculation * Surpassing subject/object conditions * Praxis * Realism, mimesis * Labor, work, vocation, craft, profession * Modernism/contemporaneity * Failure * Nostalgia * Utopias and heterotopias * Pursuit and politics: feminism, Occupy, Arab Spring; political investments in academia or other professional contexts * Agonism Please send completed papers (with references following the guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style) of between 4,000 and 10,000 words to ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com by January 1st, 2014 at 11:59pm EST. Inquiries should be sent to the same address. Creative/Artistic Works In addition to written materials, Invisible Culture is accepting work in other media (video, photography, drawing, code) that reflect upon the theme as it is outlined above. For questions or more details concerning acceptable formats, go to http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/contribute or contact ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com. Reviews InVisible Culture is also currently seeking submissions for book, exhibition, and film reviews (600-1,000 words). To submit a review proposal, go to http://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/contribute or contact ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com. Blog The journal also invites submissions to its blog feature, which will accommodate more immediate responses to the topic of the current issue. For further details, please contact us at ivc[dot]rochester[at]gmail[dot]com with the subject heading “blog submission”. * InVisible Culture (An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture) is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to explorations of the material and political dimensions of cultural practices: the means by which cultural objects and communities are produced, the historical contexts in which they emerge, and the regimes of knowledge or modes of social interaction to which they contribute.

Hi Sanni, I wrote my master's thesis on online political humor memes. There are a few notable readings in there, but you'd probably find more on that KnowYourMeme thread from a few emails ago. Informal meeting in DC
by tfolkes1 . 27 Aug '13

27 Aug '13

I have been developing internet research tools for over ten years and comes out of my work on context. My tools encompass AI, the use of multiple nomenclatures at the same time, polling multiple sources, and KM. I have also developed a non Boolean method of managing records, which is both easy and accurate. I was wondering what other tools and needs people had in the DC area. So I propose an informal get together in the DC area. Anyone interested? _

Described as the beginning of “the Arab democratic spring”, and likened to the fall of the Arab “Berlin” wall, the wave of protests has galvanized the attention of the world not only because of its transformative political implications for the region, but also because of the alleged central role of the Internet, specifically social media platforms in bringing about the first “Facebook” and “Twitter” revolutions (Wan, 2011), and in empowering “generation 2.0” (Hererra, 2011) to rise against tyranny and defy fear and repression. However, after more than two years since the beginning of the uprisings, and the deposition of several dictators, democratic transition in the region is facing formidable challenges, chief among them political and economic instability, deep polarizations between Islamist and secular/liberal movements, multiple forms of sectarian, ethnic and religious cleavages, in addition to endemic corruption and inefficient governance. These challenges have already shifted into full-blown civil war in Syria and are threatening other countries, such as Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia. Against this background, one key question that needs to be addressed is whether ICTs in general can play a role in promoting civil society, civic culture and trust, bridging political elites to disenchanted young people and the general population, and enhancing governance. In conjunction with this question, there is an urgent need to examine how identity politics is informing and shaping how the notions of civil society, citizenship, and pluralism are imagined and enacted online and the implications thereof for democratic transition in the region. While the outcome of these regional upheavals is still difficult to predict, we believe the time is ripe for a rigorous debate and research into the intersections of the cultural, political and technological issues that led to the “Arab Spring.” *Objectives of the Book* Editors seek innovative contributions that analyze the role of ICTs, particularly the Internet and other new media, in the ongoing upheavals in Arab societies. We are interested in chapters that interrogate the implications of these technologies for cultural expression, and identity building at the individual and collective levels in these societies. Given how new cultural forms of self-expression from rap music to blogging have become intertwined in the Tunisian and the Egyptian revolutions, for instance, we seek contributions on the various linkages between self-expression, self-reflexivity, political dissent and new media discourses in the region. Underscoring the linkages between identity politics, collective action repertoire, political culture, and new communication technologies, this book seeks to examine the Arab new media environment leading to the Arab Spring and its aftermath. *Sample Topics* We encourage multidisciplinary approaches that employ social movement theory, cultural studies, radical democracy theory, or network theory, among others, to study and interpret dissent, resistance, collective action, and democratic transition in Arab societies. Other theoretical, empirical and methodology approaches are also welcome. Themes and questions to be considered could include but are not limited to 1) Research that theorizes/applies social movement theory to analyze the “Arab Spring;” 2) Cases studies addressing new cultural forms and Arab/Muslim identities (e.g. hip hop music, digital art, and photography); 3) Critical assessment of youth movement, youth culture, and political consciousness; 4) Case studies addressing ICTs, new media audiences, ethnic minorities and identities; 5) New empirical analyses of ICTs and political Islam/other social movements in the Arab world; 6) Theoretical and empirical assessments of the intersection between new media and gender in the region (e.g. feminist movements, women identities and self-expression); 7) Comparative analyses of new journalism forms in the Arab world (e.g. citizen journalism); 8) Conceptually- and theoretically-informed evaluation of the intersections between new media and democracy in the region; 9) Other approaches that fit with the above themes and contribute to theory building are welcome. *Submission Requirements* Interested authors should send an *abstract* of no more than 600 words and *a short bio *to the Editors’ email addresses by*October 15, 2013*.
