Four year doctoral project in Ireland: The geography and political economy of software production (fwd)
by martin dodge 10 Jun '13

10 Jun '13

Please circulate to potential candidates. *Four year doctoral project: The geography and political economy of software production* Funded by a European Research Council Advanced Investigator Award to Prof. Rob Kitchin, we are seeking a doctoral student to work on /The Programmable City/ project. The project will be based in the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. The production of software, like any industry, has a particular space economy to its creation and circulation. Its operations are organised and structured both sectorally and spatially to enable efficient production, and minimise costs and maximise profit. At a macro-level there is a geography of software development, so that whilst software creation takes place across the world, it is concentrated in key sites, for example, Silicon Valley, Bangalore, Boston, and Ireland, where there is an agglomeration of skilled labour, entrepreneurship, technologies, venture capital, and local tax and development regimes. At these sites, software is the product of a complex interplay of social, political and economic processes operating within and across scales. For other kinds of software production, such as open source projects, development is often more dispersed and distributed. This project will provide a detailed analysis of the geography and political economy of software development, with a particular focus on Boston and Dublin. It will involve case study research and interviews with company managers and agencies and organisations that seek to facilitate inward investment and indigenous start-ups (development agencies, business incubators, venture capitalists, etc). *Stipend **:* *EUR16,000 p.a, plus fees* The stipend is projected to increment by 8% per annum. The post is expected to commence 1^st September 2013, subject to receipt of approved funding. Closing date: midnight, Friday 14th June 2013 Further details on the post and application process: http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AGQ309/doctoral-student/ or http://www.nuim.ie/nirsa/news/documents/Programmable_Booklet%20PhD.pdf -- Prof. Rob Kitchin Director, National Institute of Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) National University of Ireland, Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland Tel: +353 1 708 3372, Fax: +353 1 708 6456,[log in to unmask] <https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?LOGON=A3%3Dind1305%26L%3DCRIT-G…> http://www.nuim.ie/nirsa/people/admin/kitchin.shtml t: @robkitchin, b:http://irelandafternama.wordpress.com/ --

Final CFP> HICSS 2014 Minitrack: Crowdsourcing content production and online knowledge repositories
by Fichman, Pnina 10 Jun '13

10 Jun '13

Apologies for cross-posting HICSS 2014 Minitrack: Crowdsourcing content production and online knowledge repositories January 6-9, 2014 Big Island, Hawaii, USA Track: Digital and social media We are pleased to invite you to submit a paper to the Crowdsourcing mini-track for HICSS 2014 taking place at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii from Jan. 6-9th, 2014. In line with the track emphasis on promoting digital and social-media-related research, this minitrack aims to expand the scope of research in HICSS and bring to the conference researchers interested in cutting edge topics involving socio-technical issues of mass knowledge production and crowdsourcing online knowledge repositories. As various forms of collaboration are enabled (and constrained) by the affordances available in social media, researchers are investigating a range of issues including: 1) the diverse ways in which people collaborate to create, manage, curate and manipulate online content and how these activities affect digital repositories; 2) how those who manage these repositories are responding to the dynamics of online co-creation of content; 3) the dynamics of crowdsourced online collaborations and online communities of practice; and 4) the ways in which we can best describe the socio-technical interaction networks that facilitate and inhibit mass knowledge production. In this mini track we are interested in empirical and theoretical work that addresses these and related socio-technical issues. Papers of interest will examine communities of online knowledge repositories such as YouTube, Yahoo!Answers, Wikipedia, and others and may address in this context topics such as: . The socio-technical dynamics of crowdsourcing and mass knowledge production sites . Vandalism and trolling in online mass knowledge production sites . Conflict and cooperation in content production sites . Issues of gender in collaborative content production sites . Global, cross-cultural and international aspects of content production and online intercultural collaborations in online content creation communities . Managing ethics in online mass knowledge production communities . Building, maintaining and ending social relationships on online repositories sites . Social question answering and collaborative information seeking behaviors . Challenges and opportunities of digital curation . Standards and quality of digital content online Detailed information about the conference can be found here http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_47/apahome47.htm Information for potential authors can be found here http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/hicss_47/47cfp.pdf Due date for submission of full papers is: June 15, 2013 Minitrack organizers Pnina Fichman fichman(a)indina.edu<mailto:fichman@indina.edu> Noriko Hara nhara(a)indiana.edu Howard Rosenbaum hrosenba(a)indiana.edu ------------------------ Pnina Fichman, Ph.D. Director, Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics Associate Professor, School of Informatics and Computing Affiliated Associate Professor, School of Global and International Studies 901 E. 10th St. Informatics West #301 Indiana University, Bloomington IN 47408 Office: (812) 856-1587 Cell: (812) 322-0219 Web: http://ella.slis.indiana.edu/~fichman/

Surprised that there's no discussion here on NSA and metadata collection. Seems like prime aoir material. Maybe some privacy scholars and cryptography experts can give some expert comments? -Robert

Re: [Air-L] NSA and privacy?
by Matt Crain 10 Jun '13

Hello all, I'll just chime in briefly in response to Rick's comments. My expertise is more on the commercial side of internet surveillance, but clearly this is deeply intertwined with gov activities. While the Patriot Act and post-911 ramp up of NSA surveillance is definitely a watershed moment of sorts, there were public policy battles in the late 1990s that really set the foundation for a regime of governance over data collection and use, fairly broadly conceived. Rotenberg should remember, he was on the front lines of a policy battle that on its face was about "opt-in" vs "opt-out" surveillance practices, but was really about whether federal regulation would mandate that individuals be given some control over the data produced by their internet use or whether a regime of industry/gov “self-regulation” (i.e. free for all) would be extended online. I realize that much of the specifics regarding the NSA leak are technically telecommunications, but from a normative view (and increasingly in practice), the internet/telecom distinction is not substantive. Just some historical perspective. BTW, I'm a longtime lurker and new member, who will be attending the Denver conference. Let's chat!
