Public Urban Media Tour of West End London during ICA
by Scott Rodgers 09 Jun '13

09 Jun '13

A tour scheduled to coincide with the International Communication Association conference in London (but open to the public) The Mediated City A Tour of Media and Mediation in West End London Led by Joel McKim and Scott Rodgers This tour uses West End London as a lens into ‘the mediated city’. It explores how the city not only hosts, but is in many ways constituted through, media. City living compels us to use, need and even desire media content and devices in quite particular ways. Meanwhile, media forms, technologies and industries exist in and are even ‘built-into’ urban spaces: for example the street, the tube, the suburb, the bar, the public square. The aim of this tour is twofold: first, to highlight how the city provides a unique lens to critically study, understand and define media; and second, to use media and mediation as a lens to understand the city. Though a range of buildings and neighbourhoods associated with major media industries will be visited, the tour also focuses on observing some more unconventional forms of urban media and communication. Date, place and registration: Wedsnesday 19 June, 2013, 12.30-3.30pm Numbers are limited, so booking is essential – visit http://ica2013mediatour.eventbrite.co.uk Attendees will meet at the southwest corner of Fitzroy Square at 12.30pm (directions at Eventbrite link). The tour lasts 3 hours, ending at Leicester Square. For further information: Contact Joel McKim (j.mckim(a)bbk.ac.uk) or Scott Rodgers (s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk)

Conditions of Mediation preconference: Limited spaces still available!
by Scott Rodgers 09 Jun '13

LIMITED SPACES STILL AVAILABLE (INCLUDING AT 50% REDUCED STUDENT RATE) Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication 2013 International Communication Association (ICA) Preconference ICA Theory, Philosophy and Critique Division 17 June 2013, Birkbeck, University of London Conference website (includes full conference programme and registration details): http://conditionsofmediation.wordpress.com Registration deadline: 11 June 2012 (end of day) Confirmed keynote speakers: · Dr David Berry, Swansea University · Professor Nick Couldry, Goldsmiths, University of London · Professor Graham Harman, American University of Cairo · Professor Shaun Moores, University of Sunderland · Professor Lisa Parks, University of California Santa Barbara · Professor Paddy Scannell, University of Michigan Conference Outline: Media theory seems to have reached a moment in which it is effectively orthodox to presume we must pay attention first and foremost to the intricacies of everyday experience. Ethnographic audience studies, for example, have attacked assumptions that there is a discrete relationship between media content and audiences, arguing that media forms, content and technologies have indeterminate and multifaceted significance within the daily rhythms and spaces of their everyday lives. Studies of digital and networked media, meanwhile, have put into question the very notion of ‘audiences’ as the starting point for understanding mediated experience. For some, accounting for the intricacies of everyday mediated experience has implied asking people what they actually do with media. But for others this is not enough: instead, the question is what constitutes the conditions of media experience in the first place. How do political configurations of discourses and inherited dispositions prefigure mediated action? How do material arrangements themselves constitute environments for mediated experience? How might we account for nonhuman agency, for example the ways in which software objects interact not only with human perceptions but also each other? Such questions point to a renewed confidence in explaining not just how but also why media, technology and communication are experienced as they are – all the while resisting a reversion to functionalism. These interests in the very conditions of mediation suggest, if sometimes only implicitly, an emerging interest in a phenomenology of media. Indeed, phenomenology – broadly the structuring of perception – has seemingly obvious relevance for recent academic interests in media experience. Yet its use or invocation in media studies has been scattered. While this might simply reflect the considerable diversity of phenomenological philosophies and their applications, there have also been concerted efforts recently to rethink phenomenology across the social sciences and humanities. Paired with recent interests in mediated experience, the time seems apt to reassess what it might mean to theorize media phenomenologically. Conditions of Mediation seeks to bring together scholars from a very wide range of perspectives – such as media history, media archaeology, audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, software studies, science and technology studies, digital aesthetics, cultural geography and urban studies –to reflect explicitly on the phenomenological groundings of their work on media. The phenomenological thinking to which participants might connect will be broad-based, ranging from core thinkers such as Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Sartre to those with looser affiliations to phenomenology per se, for example Arendt, Bergson, Bourdieu, Deleuze, Garfinkel, Ingold, Latour, Whitehead and Harman. In short, the overall aim is that this conference goes beyond a mere congregation of media phenomenologists. Instead, it will encourage critical reflection on what various readings of phenomenology might offer media and technology studies that other approaches cannot. Conversely, it will also welcome reflections on the limits of phenomenological approaches in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. If you have any inquiries, please email both: Scott Rodgers (s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk) and Tim Markham (t.markham(a)bbk.ac.uk)

[1]CALL FOR PAPERS & [2]CALL FOR SMARTPHONE, MOBILE AND POCKET CAMERA FILMS MINA -- 2013 | Mobile Innovation Network Aotearoa 3rd International Mobile Creativity and Mobile Innovation Symposium and International Mobile Innovation Screening Auckland 20 - 22 November 2013 Mobile Innovation Network Aotearoa [ MINA - [3]www.mina.pro ] is an international network that promotes cultural and research activities to expand the emerging possibilities of mobile media. MINA aims to explore the opportunities for interaction between people, content and the creative industry within the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand and internationally. This year MINA is pleased to announce that the School of Art & Design (AUT University) and CoLab (Creative Technologies Research Institute for the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies at AUT University) will co-host its 2013 International Symposium & Screening to be held at AUT University's Auckland City campus, in collaboration with the College of Creative Arts, Massey University (Wellington). The Symposium provides a platform for filmmakers, artists, designers, researchers and industry professionals to debate the prospect of wireless, mobile and ubiquitous technologies in art and design environments and the creative industries. [4]CALL FOR PAPERS MINA invites proposals for papers and presentations relating, but not limited to mobile communities, mobile social media and social change, mobile art, mobile locative media, citizen journalism, mobile visual literacy, mobile video production, mobile-mentaries (mobile documentaries), mobile network, mobile media in education and mobile technologies and civic media. This year the circulation of smartphones outnumbered the volume of mobile phones. Most mobile devices (including tablets and pocket size digital cameras) have a HD video capacity and provide Internet connectivity. Since the proliferation of apps five years ago, new opportunities for creative mobile media production emerged. Mobile filmmaking is now an established format ranging from music video to TV commercial production. A number of contemporary apps feature location-based services that can create new experiences and representations of places. Mobile filmmaking also provides prospects for citizen journalist to expand the domain of videography. Contemporary forms of collaborative filmmaking projects connect 21^st century citizens and filmmakers across the globe creating new forms of digital, networked and transmedia storytelling. As an egalitarian filmmaking tool and technology, mobile filmmaking provides access to a new generation of filmmakers. In alignment with the ubiquity of social media, mobile communication is shifting towards an increasingly visual realm. Live streaming and micro formats of mobile filmmaking can be compared to early cinema and actuality film, while mobile short films resonate approaches and practices known from the field of experimental documentary and avant-garde moving-image practices. The 3nd International Mobile Creativity and Mobile Innovation Symposium will explore the following mobile developments and dynamics in a transdisciplinary context. MOBILE & PEDAGOGY MOBILE & MEDIA PRODUCTION MOBILE & AESTHETIC MOBILE & SOUND MOBILE & HYBRID ART MOBILE & INTERACTIVITY MOBILE & SPACE MINA welcomes presentations in a variety of formats including academic papers, workshops, poster presentations, performances, project showcases and screenings. Re: [Air-L] Re Understanding Social Media

I have found the following definition and paper to be useful when trying to define 'social media'. “Social Media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content” (Kaplan & Haenlein 2010: 61) They also do a handy "Classification of Social Media by social presence/media richness and self-presentation/self-disclosure" - e.g. blogs are high in self-presentation/self-disclosure, but low in social presence/media richness. CFP: Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media Graduate Student Special Issue - Old Against New, or a Coming of Age? Rethinking Broadcasting in an Era of Electronic Media
by Stacy Blasiola 07 Jun '13

07 Jun '13

*Call for Papers* Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media Special Issue *Old Against New, or a Coming of Age? Rethinking Broadcasting in an Era of Electronic Media* In this special issue edited and authored by graduate students, JOBEM is calling on emerging scholars to redefine “broadcasting” and explore the relevance of this term in an age of electronic media. We believe that graduate students are uniquely situated to change the conversation around new and old media, rethinking both what it means for media to come of age and how to study such a phenomenon. *Special Issue Coordinating Editor-in-Chief* Stacy Blasiola (University of Illinois at Chicago, sblasi2(a)uic.edu) *Special Issue Guest Editors* R. Stuart Geiger (University of California, Berkeley) Airi Lampinen(Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT & University of Helsinki) *Deadline for Extended Abstracts:* August 19, 2013 *Full Paper Invitation:* September 22, 2013 *Deadline for Full Papers:* January 6, 2014 *Final Decisions:* May 6, 2014 *Contact:* JOBEMgradIssue(a)gmail.com As guest editors for the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, we know that the term “broadcasting” certainly has the connotations of a rapidly-disappearing era. There is a strong temptation to sharply distinguish between old and new media, and “broadcasting” (and even “electronic”) is a term that is now often associated with the old. We are constantly told that we are in the midst of a digital/social media revolution that will make the unidirectional, mass communication model obsolete. Yet a cursory glance into either the history of media technology or the contemporary use of new media platforms complicates these dominant narratives. Do we need new terms to help us think about what it means for new media to come of age, or do we need to reappropriate old terms? Do ideas about new media revolutions help us better understand the complicated relationships between radio and early television programming, telegraph networks and emerging telephone infrastructure, or musicians and the various shifts in the recording industry? Do notions of social media disruptions help us understand how participation takes place in sites like Wikipedia, reddit, or YouTube, or how these sites are situated in relation to more established news and media industries? What is the relevance of “old media” terms such as “broadcasting” for studying today’s social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, and Pinterest? We call on graduate students to start a new thread in the conversation about what it means for media to be old and new. For us, rethinking “broadcasting” in an era of electronic media is to neither hastily disregard the legacy of these terms nor cling to them too rigidly. As graduate students, we feel a curious resonance with the contradictory expectations surrounding new media forms. We are called to be apprentices, learning to participate in a longstanding and well-established institution; yet at the same time we are called to be radical revolutionaries, disrupting old ways of thinking. Graduate students, like many new media services and platforms, face many anxieties about what it means to come of age in a landscape already filled with towering figures. Many of the issues we face are longstanding problems that every generation before us also confronted, but we also face many concerns that are unique to our current historical situation. As emerging scholars, we believe that graduate students are uniquely situated to change the conversation around new and old media, rethinking both what it means for media to come of age and how to study such a phenomenon. In this special issue, we call on graduate students to redefine what “broadcasting” means and explore the relevance of this term in an age of electronic media. We intentionally leave this open to interpretation. We seek papers that will theoretically and empirically advance our understanding of the diverse array of practices, content, people, technologies, industries, and policies that collectively constitute our contemporary media ecology. We call for papers from a wide variety of disciplines and interdisciplinary fields, recognizing that scholarship can take a variety of different forms. We invite authors to: - propose novel theoretical or methodological frameworks to the study of media and broadcasting - critically review and synthesize existing academic literatures about media and broadcasting - discursively analyze various rhetorics and narratives around/in media and broadcasting - document case studies about historical and/or contemporary media and broadcasting forms - relate ethnographic, qualitative, or quantitative studies about the role of media and broadcasting in various social contexts - contact us about any other paper forms, or if you are unsure if your paper is suitable for this special issue * * *Deadlines and Submission Instructions* Timeline Deadline for Extended Abstracts: August 19, 2013 Invitations to Submit Full Papers: September 22, 2013 Deadline to Submit Full Papers: January 6, 2014 Final Decisions to Authors: May 6, 2014 Final Revisions for Full Papers: May 26, 2014 Publication of the Special Issue: September 2014 All submissions must be graduate student driven, meaning that the primary authors should be enrolled as graduate students (at least) at the time of submitting extended abstracts. Although collaborative work with non-graduate students is acceptable, we seek papers that are primarily conceptualized and authored by graduate students. Collaborative work with other students is highly encouraged. Importantly, the corresponding, lead author–who will be responsible for the paper and interactions with the editors–must be a graduate student. Because we anticipate a large number of submissions, we will not initially accept full papers for review. Interested authors must first send a proposal of their paper in an extended abstract format of 600-800 words, not including references. The extended abstract should clearly introduce and outline the paper, giving reviewers from a wide variety of academic fields enough context and detail to evaluate its feasibility as a full paper, intellectual merit, relevance to the special issue theme, and broader impacts. As the research for these papers may not yet be complete, we do not expect that extended abstracts will necessarily include all of the paper’s findings or conclusions. However, the extended abstracts should outline what kinds of findings or conclusions the authors expect to present in the final paper. Specifically, extended abstracts should include: - a title - a description of the paper’s core topic, case, problem, and/or argument - the methodological approach, theoretical background, and/or disciplinary field - the paper’s relevance to related academic literatures - expected findings or conclusions - expected contributions to the study of media Extended abstracts must be mailed as an attachment to JOBEMgradIssue(a)gmail.com and must be sent in .rtf, .doc or .docx format. We cannot accept .pdf submissions. Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be invited to submit a full paper of no more than 7,500 words (including references). Invited full papers will be subject to a formal peer review process, and papers will only be published if they pass JOBEM’s standard reviewing process. Authors must adhere to a strict schedule for submission and revisions. Authors whose manuscripts do not get accepted to the special issue are encouraged to consider submitting revised papers to JOBEM through the normal submission process. All submissions must adhere to the formatting guidelines for Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media. Manuscripts must adhere to APA style format. Complete submission guidelines can be accessed at http://www.beaweb.org/jobem-guidelines.htm.Full papers must be submitted online at:http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hbem (select “Special Issue: Grad Issue” as a manuscript type). CfP: Philosophers of the World Unite! Theorizing Digital Labour and Virtual Work: Definitions, Forms and Transformations Special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique Download CfP: http://fuchs.uti.at/wp-content/CfP_DigitalLabour.pdf CfP: http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/14 Supported by COST Action IS1202 “Dynamics of Virtual Work”-Working Group 3 “Innovation and the Emergence of New Forms of Value Creation and New Economic Activities“ (http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.com, http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.com/wg3/) tripleC (http://www.triple-c.at) Communication, Capitalism & Critique. Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society. Editors: Marisol Sandoval, Christian Fuchs, Jernej A. Prodnik, Sebastian Sevignani, Thomas Allmer In 1845, Karl Marx (1845, 571) formulated in the 11th Feuerbach Thesis: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it”. Today, interpretation of the world has become an important form of labour that is expressed on and with the help of digital media. It has therefore become common to talk about digital labour and virtual work. Yet the changes that digital, social and mobile media bring about in the world of labour and work have thus far only been little theorized and theoretically interpreted. In order to change the information society to the better, we first have to interpret digital labour with the help of critical theories. Theorists of the world from different fields, backgrounds, interdisciplines, transdisciplines and disciplines have to unite for this collective philosophical task. The overall task of this special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique is to gather contributions that help to an understanding of how to critically theorize digital labour, virtual work and related concepts. Theorizing digital labour requires us to provide grounded 1) definitions of digital labour and virtual work, 2) systematic distinctions and typologies of forms of digital labour and 3) theorizing the transformations that digital labour is undergoing. All submitted papers should be theoretical and profoundly engage with the meanings of various concepts. Rather than presenting case studies, papers should focus on fundamental theoretical concepts and discuss definitions. They can also explore the relations between concepts, the historical development of these concepts, typologies and the relevance of different theoretical approaches. The special issue is interested in theorizing the broader picture of digital labour. We welcome submissions that cover one or more of the following or related questions. 1) Concepts of Labour * How should concepts such of work and labour be defined and what are the implications of these definitions for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * Which theoretical or philosophical definitions of work and labour exist and which of them are meaningful for understanding virtual work and digital labour? * What is the difference between labour and digital labour? What is part of digital labour and what is not? Which online, offline, knowledge, physical, industrial, agricultural etc forms of work are part of it or not part of it? Is digital labour only knowledge labour that happens online or do we have to extend the concept to the offline realms and physical labour? Where is the demarcation line? Is digital labour also labour where digital technologies are of vast importance or not? Does digital labour involve the physical forms of work necessary for producing digital labour? * Is there a difference between 'work' and 'labour' and if so, how does it matter for the discussion of digital labour and virtual work? * What is the role of Karl Marx’ theory of labour and surplus value for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * Is the traditional distinction between the material base and superstructure in the realm of social media and digital labour still valid or does it become blurred or undermined? Are new information and communication technologies and social media, their production and use (n)either part of the base (n)or the superstructure or are they part of both? *If in the agricultural and industrial age land and nature have been the traditional objects of labour, how do the objects of labour and productive forces look like in the world of digital media and digital labour and how are these productive forces linked to class relations? * What is meant by concepts such as digital labour, telework, virtual work, cyberwork, immaterial labour, knowledge labour, creative work, cultural labour, communicative labour, informational work, digital craft, service work, prosumption, consumption work, online work, audience labour, playbour (play labour) in the context of digital media? How should they be defined? How are they related? How have they developed historically? How are these concepts related to the wider social context and the existing capitalist order? How can a systematic typology of the existing literature in this research field be constructed? Should any of these concepts be rejected? Why? Why not? Do any of these concepts especially matter? If so, why? * What is the etymological history of concepts such as work and labour in different languages and how have these concepts changed throughout history? Which of these historically different meanings are important for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * What are historically new aspects of digital labour, what are predecessors of digital work and which aspects of digital labour have parallels to the pre-digital era? * What is the role of the concept of value for understanding digital labour and virtual work as well as “immaterial” labour, affective labour, knowledge/communicative/information work etc in the context of digital media? 2) Forms of Labour * What is the role of agricultural, industrial, service and knowledge work in the world of digital labour and how are they related? How are different modes of production related to each other in the world of digital labour? * What are the important dimensions for constructing a typology of work that takes place in online spaces (e.g. crowdsourcing, online gambling, gold farming, turking, microwork, production of and trade with virtual items, clickwork etc)? * How can a typology of alternative forms of online work that rejects the profit logic be constructed (e.g. free software development, creative commons and copyleft publishing, Wikipedia collaboration, peer-production, open access publishing, file sharing etc)? * Which forms of labour are involved in the global value chain of digital media, how do they differ from each other and how are they related (e.g. mining, hardware assemblage, call centre work, software engineering, transport labour, prosumer labour, e-waste labour etc)? 3) Transformations of Labour * How can blurring boundaries between toil and play, labour and leisure time, the factory and society, production and consumption, public and private, the sphere of production and reproduction, economic value and social wealth in the realm of digital media be conceptualized? * What is the relationship between creativity, participation, do-it-yourself culture on the one hand and exploitation, alienation and/or emancipation on the other hand? * What is the role of the concepts of the working class and the proletariat for theorizing digital labour? * How would the concepts of digital work and digital labour look like in a post-capitalist society? Does the post-capitalist end of the working class also mean the end of and abolition of digital work? Or just the end of digital labour? What are the anthropologically constant and the historically variable dimensions of productive human activities? How should they be conceptualized and named? How are they related to the realm of digital media? Do concepts such as anti-work, zerowork, the abolition of work, post-work and the right to be lazy take the anthropological, creative and productive aspects of human life that are expressed on digital media into account? What are the elements of digital media activities that will continue to exist in a post-capitalist society? What are the historically continuous and discontinuous elements of digital labour? * What has historically been the role of communications – including digital communications – in labour transformations and in the construction of global labour chains (e.g. global division of labour and social interdependencies; the concept of collective worker / Gesamtarbeiter; socialization of labour etc.)? Deadlines: Abstract submission: July 31, 2013 All abstracts will be reviewed and decisions on acceptance/rejection will be communicated to the authors at the latest by the end of summer 2013. Full paper submission: January 15, 2014 Please submit article titles, author names and contact data and abstracts of 200-400 words to: Marisol Sandoval, marisol.sandoval(a)uti.at Marx, Karl. 1845. Website: http://allmer.uti.at About the Journal: tripleC Editor: Christian Fuchs, University of Westminster tripleC (http://www.triple-c.at) Communication, Capitalism & Critique. Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society focuses on information society studies and studies of media, digital media, information and communication in society with a special interest in critical studies in these thematic areas. The journal has a special interest in disseminating articles that focus on the role of information (cognition/knowledge, communication, cooperation) in contemporary capitalist societies. For this task, articles should employ critical theories and/or empirical research inspired by critical theories and/or philosophy and ethics guided by critical thinking as well as relate the analysis to power structures and inequalities of capitalism, especially forms of stratification such as class, racist and other ideologies and capitalist patriarchy. tripleC is a transdisciplinary journal that is open to contributions from all disciplines and approaches that critically and with a focus on power structures analyze the role of cognition, communication, cooperation, information, media, digital media and communication in the information society. tripleC is indexed in the databases Communication and Mass Media Complete and Scopus. Its application for inclusion in Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) is under review/observation by ISI Thomson.
