Dear air-l members, I am seeking some help locating Usenet archives for research purposes - and in the long run, in a Internet digital heritage perspective. I am working on the French newsgroups (from 1993 on) but also interested in any Usenet archival projects for research or heritage purposes. Maybe the list can help me with the following : 1/ The Google Groups archives, as everyone probably knows, is very difficult to search, especially since they changed their interface. I would like to talk with someone at Google about their Usenet archive, but I find no possibility of reaching them via online forms. Could someone recommend a contact ? 2/ Can anyone recommend papers on the topic of Usenet from an archival perspective (rsearch or heritage) ? I have looked into the AIR-L list archives and have found an essay by Ronda Hauben, but it did not stirr any discussion at the time. 3/ I already know of the UTZOO archives on the Internet Archive. Has anybody exploited these archives ? Does anyone knows of Usenet archive initiatives other than Google's and the Internet Archive's UTZOO ? 4/ Finally, I would be interested to talk with people who have constituted a Usenet corpus and preserved it. [Of possible interest to some list members - I tried to forward the actual email to the list but it got bounced] A new competition offers $100,000 in prizes for creative and provocative digital media pieces that offer new ideas and fresh perspectives to help improve American democracy. The competition - Looking@Democracy <http://www.lookingatdemocracy.org/> - aims to spark a national conversation about why government is important to our lives and how individuals and communities can come together to strengthen American democracy. "Given our perception that the political system has failed to adequately address major issues confronting the nation, MacArthur seeks to stimulate discussion about the future of the Republic and invests in promising ideas to help enhance democratic ideals, institutions, and practices," said MacArthur President Robert Gallucci. "This new public competition is all about engaging citizens and encouraging them to apply their creative talents and offer their ideas to strengthen American democracy." By welcoming submissions in any digital format (e.g., videos, apps, data visualizations, podcasts, graphic art), the competition hopes to engage independent media makers, investigative reporters, students, graphic designers, and artists - anyone with creative ideas to help engage Americans and shift the political discussion in a fresh and engaging way. Research on Skype

Hi everyone I am relatively new on this list. My name is Robyn Longhurst and I am social and cultural geographer at Waikato University (NZ) who is interested in screen, media and communication. I am wondering if anyone is able to direct me to any work on Skype. I am currently setting up a project that aims is to advance dialogue between human geographers and media studies by examining how family and household members in New Zealand are currently using Skype to reconfigure their everyday familial, social, gendered, sexual, inter-generational, emotional and affectual geographies. I am especially interested in if there is there something qualitatively different about the ‘real-time’ video communication offered by Skype - hearing, and seeing the lived flesh of the ‘real’ person and space on the screen - rather than just written, text and phone communication, that is changing everyday familial geographies and relationships? If anyone knows of any literature on Skype that might be relevant I’d be enormously grateful and willing to share information with others who might also be interested. Thanks in advance. Call for papers: Media and Civic Engagement Editors Stine Liv Johansen (guest editor, Aarhus University), Cecilie Givskov, Kjetil Sandvik, University of Copenhagen SUBMISSION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 1, 2013 Publication deadline: Spring 2014 Civic engagement as it concerns media can and should be understood in relation to a wide range of new, emerging media practices and uses of new and old media. Voters and politicians engage through and with social media, creating new possibilities for political dialogue and dissensus. Media has played a crucial role in the Middle East uprisings over the past few years, and various forms of digital activism are budding globally. Students use media to enhance their learning of traditional curricula at the same time as new fields of learning are emerging alongside media. Cultural production and cultural consumption converge through digital media. People use media as a motivating factor in sports and exercise. Meanwhile, consumers, visitors to museums, children, and the elderly are encouraged to engage with brands, cultural institutions, and one another through media of different sorts. These bottom-up processes all point towards new relationships between media producers and media users as well as towards new forms of media use and new conceptualisations of media content. These developments raise a range of questions. What are the affordances of new and old media in relation to civic engagement? How do new media influence the emergence and structure of new and established public arenas? How do different media promote the emergence of new user groups and of new and/or revitalised engagements? What is the role of media regulation, censorship, etc. in relation to civic engagement? What are the methodological challenges for media and communication research? All in all, how do changing media landscapes provide new possibilities for people to interact through and with media, crossing national, social, and technological borders? MedieKultur invites both theoretical and empirical articles on the theme of Civic Engagement. Call for papers: Technology, power and the political economy of new media Editors Rasmus Helles (guest editor) and Anne Mette Thorhauge, University of Copenhagen SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MARCH 10, 2013 Publication deadline: Fall 2013 Recent developments in digital communication technologies have challenged commonly held notions of media systems and the power and production relations that they involve. The networked, global nature of new media challenges has established regulatory frameworks for mass- and interpersonal communication, and displaces previously well-known markets and business models. For example, the introduction of new platforms (smartphones, tablets) not only makes content available to consumers in new ways, but also undermines existing constellations between actors at different points in the chain from content production to consumption. Network-providers and platform-owners (Apple, Facebook) become distributors of content, and thereby marginalise the established position of retailers. The digitisation of content therefore amounts to an introduction of new types of gates and gatekeepers (Spotify, Facebook, Google etc). While many of the new actors in media markets have been discussed in terms of their potential for empowering users, democratic innovation or market failure, few studies have addressed the dynamics of their emergence in a manner that traces the development of new institutional actors in the media sector and its implications for media development. Accordingly, the aim of this special issue is to promote critical discussion about the intersections between technology, power and political economy, based on systematic theoretical and empirical analyses. The next ETHICOMP conference will take place in June 2013 in Kolding, Denmark (see <http://www.sdu.dk/en/Om_SDU/Institutter_centre/Idk/ethicomp2013>) The CEPE (Computer Ethics: Professional Enquiries) conferences are international fora promoting dialogue between moral philosophy and the field of information and communication technology (ICT). They are sponsored by the International Society for Ethics in Information Technology (INSEIT), founded in 2000 with a focus on the ethical issues in and surrounding ICT. The next CEPE conference will take place in Lisbon in July 2013. (see <http://www.cepe2013.com/> In the summer of 2014 (June/July), the ETHICOMP and CEPE conferences will hold their first joint conferences. While each conference series has developed its distinctive culture, identity, and primary areas of focus both conferences have established traditions of fostering interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue concerning important ethical issues shaping the information society. Both conferences clearly share common interests in ethics and computing. Both conferences maintain a high academic standard: contributions are peer reviewed, published in conference proceedings, and sometimes inspire journal special issues. In light of these shared interests and purposes, we have agreed to hold our 2014 conferences jointly ideally, at the same physical location, with perhaps some overlapping conference experiences (e.g., a shared keynote, reception, and/or conference track). By doing so, we anticipate that the interdisciplinary goals of both organizations will be met even more powerfully and enjoyably. At the same time, we hope to realize some economies of scale through such an approach, thereby making more efficient use of increasingly scarce resources. The proposal should contain the following headings: Name and contact detail of lead individual Name and short description of host organization Prior experience in hosting and organizing conferences Clear statement of support from the host organization(s) including, e.g., in-kind contributions of conference venue, AV/IT technical support, and so forth Initial suggestions and ideas regarding accommodation possibilities, including budget alternatives for graduate students; hospitality arrangements (e.g., receptions, conference dinners, etc); and other logistical support (e.g., available public transit, nearby international airport(s), etc.) Potential applicants are encouraged to contact any member of the Organizing Committee during the preparation of their applications. Tasks The successful applicants will work with the conference Organizing Committee, Conference Chair, and Programme Chair during the preparation of the conferences.
