Geek Researcher Spends Three Years Living With Hackers
by Richard Forno 01 Mar '13

01 Mar '13

Biella does great work.....ergo I'm looking forward to adding this to my must-read pile.....which right now is more like a "scholastic endtable" which is one year away from becoming am "academic-style room divider." ;) --rick Geek Researcher Spends Three Years Living With Hackers http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/11/coleman/ When you’re starting off as an anthropologist, you aim is to explore a subculture your peers have yet to uncover, spending years living with the locals and learning their ways. That’s what Gabriella Coleman did. She went to San Francisco and lived with the hackers. Coleman, an anthropologist who teaches at McGill University, spent three years living in the Bay Area, studying the community that builds the Debian Linux open source operating system and other hackers — i.e., people who pride themselves on finding new ways to reinvent software. More recently, she’s been peeling away the onion that is the Anonymous movement, a group that hacks as a means of protest — and mischief. When she moved to San Francisco, she volunteered with the Electronic Frontier Foundation — she believed, correctly, that having an eff.org address would make people more willing to talk to her — and started making the scene. She talked free software over Chinese food at the Bay Area Linux User Group’s monthly meetings upstairs at San Francisco’s Four Seas Restaurant. She marched with geeks demanding the release of Adobe eBooks hacker Dmitry Sklyarov. She learned the culture inside-out. Now, she’s written a book on her experiences: Coding Freedom: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Hacking. It’s a scholarly work of anthropology that examines the question: What does it mean to be a hacker? Earlier this month, she dropped by Wired’s offices to talk about the book. Here’s an edited transcript of the conversation: < -- > http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/11/coleman/ --- Just because i'm near the punchbowl doesn't mean I'm also drinking from it.

Call for Papers: The Point is to Change It: Media Democracy and Democratic Media in Action: UDC/Project Censored Conference in San Francisco November 1-3, 2013. We invite submissions for the Union for Democratic Communication and Project Censored conference November 1-3, 2013 at the University of San Francisco, where we have found affordable accommodations for your stay. Submission deadline is June 1, 2013. With increasingly precarious employment, accelerating ecological degradation, gulfs between the 1% and the 99%, as well as dramatic booms and busts, we need a global media responsive to the 99%. We need rigorous critique of corporate media’s commodification of social life. We need critique of all forms of censorship, systematic information exclusion, and propaganda. We need grounded ideas for democratizing media in all formats and genres. We need media justice. To revitalize and retool media democracy in today’s media landscape, the Union for Democratic Communications (UDC) and Project Censored are teaming up for our 2013 conference. UDC, which held its first conference in 1981, has worked to overcome concentrated political-economic power in order to contribute to a world based on economic justice, equality, and peace. Project Censored, founded in 1976, has made its mission to expose and counteract modern-day censorship. Together, UDC and Project Censored hope to contribute to a more democratic society and world by sharing our scholarly and activist projects. We invite research, activist & artistic proposals from critical perspectives interrogating media institutions and technologies, political/economic structures, media practices, cultural practices & audiences; we invite studies in critical pedagogy and research on media activism. Proposals that address pro-democratic media reform or outline efforts to expand citizen access to media are particularly welcome. We welcome the following proposals emailed to udcpc2013(a)gmail.com by June 1, 2013: 1. 500-word abstracts that describe the purpose and significance of your research and/or activist projects, especially those that address the issues outlined in the call. 2. Student papers should be indicated as such and also contain a 500-word abstract. 3. Presentations of Media Literacy projects, including films and multimedia related to the call. 4. Finally, we welcome proposals for pre-constituted panels. Please include 500-word abstracts for each participant (4-5 participants) and one panel rationale of 200-350 words that articulates the connections between the projects and the overall significance of the panel. CFP: Arab Women and New Media
by Vit Sisler 01 Mar '13

01 Mar '13

With all due apologies for cross-posting: CALL FOR PAPERS Arab Women in a Changing Region: Revolutionizing the Political, Social, and Communication Landscapes CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief : Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Sahar Khamis Submission deadline: October 1st, 2013 (Full Papers) Aim On the second anniversary of the “Arab Spring”, many challenges present themselves in transitioning countries, protests still continue in some countries, while new governments are being formed in others. Arguably, throughout these last two years, and before, Arab women played a critical and vital role in paving the way for the eruption of the “Arab Spring” movements: mobilizing their fellow citizens to take part in the revolts, documenting the unfolding events with their own cameras and cell phones, both as citizen journalists and professional reporters, and shaping public opinion about ongoing issues, changes, and challenges, through the extensive use of digital media, such as Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. This is a call for papers, across disciplines, aiming for critical and evidence-based evaluations of the multiple roles played by Arab women in this changing region, both as senders and receivers of mediated messages, through the use of different types of media before, during, and beyond the Arab Spring, including both new, social media, as well as other media outlets, such as satellite television channels and the press. First-person and ethnographic accounts are welcomed, but CyberOrient accepts contributions from any field of study and using any methodological orientation. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The aim of the journal is to provide research and theoretical considerations on the representation of Islam and the Middle East, the very areas that used to be styled as an “Orient”, in cyberspace, as well as the impact of the internet and new media in Muslim and Middle Eastern contexts. Submission Articles should be submitted directly to Sahar Khamis (skhamis(a)umd.edu) and Vit Sisler (vit.sisler(a)ff.cuni.cz) The submitted article should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including references). It should follow the AAA style in referencing and citations. The accepted articles will be published online with free access in early spring, 2014. Question about preserving digital records
by Peter Gloviczki 28 Feb '13

28 Feb '13

Friends, I'm passing along this question for a friend of mine. Can you help? Please respond to Gordon directly at <gordon.hoke(a)abbott.com> Thanks in advance, Peter I'm wondering if you or a colleague might have encountered the challenge of preserving content that appears on social media and mobile apps. I am dealing with that here at Abbott Labs. There are questions about 1) ownership of the content 2) ways to capture it, and 3) ways to preserve it for posterity (or regualtions, audits, or legal defense.) Any ideas or referrals? Thanks!

Colleagues, I thought the following announcement would be of particular relevance to the group... more so for the approach to promoting scholarly work than for the content itself. I'd be curious to know if other disciplinary associations sponsor "virtual brown bags." Regards, Jose On Tuesday, March 5th at 1:00 PST, the Western Political Science Association will launch their new bi-monthly “Virtual Brown Bag” series where we will discuss a new book written by authors affiliated with the WPSA. This Virtual Brown Bag will be hosted on a social video platform, Spreecast, where you can submit questions to the authors, “chat” with others in the audience, go on camera to engage “face to face” in the discussion, or simply sit back and watch. The first Virtual Brown Bag discussion will feature Dr. Lisa Garcia Bedolla & Dr. Melissa R. Michelson, authors of *Mobilizing Inclusion: Transforming the Electorate Through Get-Out-The-Vote Campaigns*. You can find out more about their new book here<http://yalepress.yale.edu/book.asp?isbn=9780300166781> . On March 5th, please join us! New Book | Twitter: Social Communication in the Twitter Age
by Dhiraj Murthy 27 Feb '13

27 Feb '13

I wanted to introduce my recently published book, Twitter: Social Communication in the Twitter Age, which is part of Polity's Digital Media and Society series. My book takes a historically-contextualized approach to understanding Twitter and presents specific case studies of citizen journalism, social movements, health, and disasters. Let me know via @dhirajmurthy if you want to learn more about the book, how to use it in classes, etc. Available in paperback at Amazon US at: http://amzn.to/WhQZ6K | Amazon UK at: http://amzn.to/12aYtes | and worldwide/review copies via Polity at: http://bit.ly/XFfaq4 Reviews: "Dhiraj Murthy's Twitter is a rich and informed consideration of one of the most commonly used sites in the US today. Drawing from multiple perspectives and incorporating literature from sociology, communication, political science, and media studies, Murthy's book includes chapters on the role Twitter plays in reshaping journalism, activism practices, disaster coordination, and the sharing of social support and medical information. Notably, the book pays special attention to historical context, drawing out connections between Twitter and earlier technologies, and using these comparisons to illustrate what is new and what is not so new about this fascinating communication platform. Murthy engages with sophisticated analytical frameworks but does so using accessible language and concrete examples, which will make this volume especially useful in the classroom." Nicole Ellison, Michigan State University "The 200,000 million tweets sent each day have been deserving of serious scholarly attention. Murthy addresses this gap in a pioneering book." The Global Journal "Dhiraj Murthy's Twitter is an excellent overview of the endless spirals of meaning and insignificance that characterize the micro-blogging phenomenon." Hal Niedzviecki, author of The Peep Diaries: How We're Learning to Love Watching Ourselves and Our Neighbours Description: Twitter has become a household name, discussed both for its role in prominent national elections, natural disasters, and political movements, as well as for what some malign as narcissistic "chatter." This book takes a critical step back from popular discourse and media coverage of Twitter, to present the first balanced, scholarly engagement of this popular medium. In this timely and comprehensive introduction, Murthy not only discusses Twitter's role in our political, economic, and social lives, but also draws a historical line between the telegraph and Twitter to reflect on changes in social communication over time. The book thoughtfully examines Twitter as an emergent global communications medium and provides a theoretical framework for students, scholars, and tweeters to reflect critically on the impact of Twitter and the contemporary media environment. The book uses case studies including citizen journalism, health, and national disasters to provide empirically rich insights and to help decipher some of the ways in which Twitter and social media more broadly may be shaping contemporary life. ******************************************** Dhiraj Murthy Assistant Professor of Sociology Director, Social Network Innovation Lab Bowdoin College Brunswick, ME 04011 207-721-5152 (o) 207-725-3023 (f) dmurthy [at] bowdoin [dot] edu http://bowdoin.edu/faculty/d/dmurthy/ http://socialnetworks.bowdoin.edu/
