cloud computing
by Murray Turoff 25 Feb '13

25 Feb '13

If one goes back to the early days of the R&D on time sharing, the mid sixties to the mid seventies; all the business forecasts were for "computer utlities" that would service all our needs just like electric utilities. There all these papers about how how the president of a company could run the whole company from his office and eliminate most of middle management. Literally hundreds of such papers which one can still look up in various management journals and conferences. It really sounded a lot like the cloud papers today. There were also papers on problems with this concept which are also worth looking up because they are some of the same problems the cloud presents. The cloud itself will not cure many of the problems we face. Not only have most of us become our own Secretary but we have to waste a lot of time maintaining our computers and upgrading them to meet growing hardware capacity demands and rapid changes in software interfaces including operating systems. 1. Pedagogy -- Grad program class size, online and trad'l
by Batchelor, Bob 24 Feb '13

24 Feb '13

Hello listmates, I am doing research regarding class sizes in graduate programs, both online and traditional. While I have read quite a bit of anecdotal stuff and talked with many colleagues who have a gut feeling about class sizes in grad programs, I am not finding as much as I would like. If you do research in this area or are interested in it, would you mind sharing resources? I want to put some meat behind the notion that the smaller the class, the better the class or the opposite, if the research supports it. Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Bob Batchelor Kent State University http://new.jmc.kent.edu/about/faculty/directory/batchelor.aspx

CFP for 4S Panel: From Hobby to Science Work: The Culture & Politics of Professionalized Maker Culture
by Laura Forlano 24 Feb '13

24 Feb '13

Apologies for x-posting. 4S Meeting in San Diego, Oct 9-12, 2013. From Hobby to Science Work: The Culture & Politics of Professionalized Maker Culture Current Participants: Carl DiSalvo, Laura Forlano, Silvia Lindtner, Thomas Lodato Hacker/maker culture is often associated with a DIY (do it yourself) ethos and Internet counterculture — in distinction from professionalized fields such as design, scientific research, or engineering. However, in recent years, hacker cultures and professionalized fields have been brought together through the efforts such as hackerspaces, which function as collocated laboratories for citizen science engagements, new product development, or batch-manufacturing. Events such as hackathons, start-up weekends, and accelerators allow DIY makers to move beyond a hobbyist activity and transform ideas into tangible products by exploiting an existing infrastructure of venture capital funding, corporate support and manufacturing labor. In addition to corporations, state organizations such as DARPA and governments in Asia have begun participate in these transformations in order to provide financial support for maker and DIY efforts with the goal of triggering new forms of innovation for their nations. The purpose of this panel is to bring together research that examines the conditions and issues of the transformation of hacker/maker culture from DIY endeavors to increasingly professionalized and purportedly economically-viable activities, and engages with the culture and politics of such professionalization process of the hobbyist Maker movement. We will examine how DIY maker production appropriates and remakes dominant narratives of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship to render and for what purposes. We ask questions such as: Who is excluded and how do local manifestations of the broader movement vary? How can analytical and methodological tools from STS inform the study of interdisciplinary maker worlds that aspire to bring together science, technology and society in new ways? What digital and other material artifacts are produced along the way, where and how do they travel, and which populations are implicated in their production? We envision this panel will contribute to ongoing concerns in Digital STS and innovation studies. We are soliciting participation in this panel (or possibly, a series of panels). If you are interested in contributing please send an email with a brief paper description to cdisalvo(a)gatech.edu by March 1st. I realize that the exclamation mark is part of the trademark but I must confess it is rather jarring to see an academic position with this punctuation in the title. Historical Origins of the Cloud
by Trevor Croker 24 Feb '13

24 Feb '13

Hello all, I am currently trying to track down the historical origin of the term "cloud computing." So far, I have only come across speculation that the cloud imagery was used in computer textbooks and slowly adopted into the computing lexicon. Any suggested resources or guidance would be very much appreciated. Best, Trevor Croker PhD Candidate in the Science and Technology Studies Program at Virginia Tech

This book finds the speaker traveling around the world and returning home with a newfound appreciation for life, love, the possibilities of the body and the landscapes that connect us. The speaker is a romantic and an explorer. >From Budapest to London and New Orleans to the American Midwest, these poems listen with a journalist’s ear. Lee Rainie & Barry Wellman MIT Press http://amzn.to/zXZg39 Print $20 Kindle $16 Old/newCybertimes http://bit.ly/c8N9V8 It's still rock & roll to me ________________________________________________________________________ ********************* CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS********************* Networked China Global Dynamics of Digital Media and Civic Engagement Call for Book Chapters for the New Agendas in Communication Series Co-editors Wenhong Chen, Assistant Professor, Department of Radio-TV-Film Stephen D. Reese, Professor, School of Journalism College of Communication, the University of Texas at Austin Aim and Scope The Internet and digital media have become conduits and locales where millions of Chinese share information and engage in creative expression and social participation. The Arab Spring and the relative lack of comparable social upheaval in China highlight once again the importance of understanding the implications of digital media and technologies for civic life in the social and historical context. Yet, compared to their growing prevalence and significance, research on the contingent, non-linear, and sometimes paradoxical impacts of digital media and technologies in Chinese societies remain theoretically underdeveloped and empirically understudied. Departing from previous studies centered on censorship or online activism, the proposed volume aims to cast a wider net and explores how people navigate, negotiate, and transform social landscapes rooted in the Chinese context, revealing both the power and limitations of the Internet and other new communication technologies. Chapter authors are encouraged to update prevailing theoretical frameworks and revisit the prosumption of digital media and their implications for globalization, transnational networks and public life. In calling for theory-driven empirical research with scholarly and policy relevance, we welcome chapters engaging with diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, especially interdisciplinary and comparative research. Chapters will be organized around three interrelated themes: digital media access and use, transnational/global networks, and civic engagement. 1. Mapping the Terrain / Digital Media Practices: What are the patterns of digital media access and use in China? What are the impacts of persistent censorship and aggressive marketization? 2. Exploring Glocalized Transnational Networks: What are the patterns of glocalized, transnational networks straddling boundaries of geography, identities, and issues? How do digital technologies and media allow local actors to form these networks in the cloud and on the ground? How does access to and memberships in such networks vary by class, gender, generation, urban-rural location, as well as differential digital media skills and literacy? How does this restructuring work to subvert and transcend traditional social and official hierarchies? 3. Understanding Civic Engagement Online and Offline: How do digital mediated communication and interactions contribute to an informed, connected, and engaged public in China? To what extent do digital media and technologies facilitate transparency and enhance the visibility of oppressed groups, particularly compared with print and broadcast media under tighter government control? To what extent do glocalized transnational networks affect access to and mobilization of resources for social development and changes? Conference The New Agendas in Communication Series is a conference and publication initiative of the College of Communication, the University of Texas at Austin. It aims to call attention to important emerging new areas of study, stimulate needed forms of intellectual inquiry, accelerate the research careers of the conference participants, build community across disciplinary divides for an important young cohort, and produce edited volumes appealing to a broad audience. Contributors should be junior scholars, including recently tenured associate professors, assistant professors, and advanced doctoral students. Single-authored work is preferable, but co-authorship is acceptable as long as all are junior scholars. Selected authors will be invited to participate in the Networked China: New Agendas conference at the University of Texas at Austin to present and help strengthen each others work for publication. As such, a full draft chapter submission is required from participants prior to the conference. Travel and lodging expenses will be supported. Logistics and timeline The book will be published in the New Agendas in Communication Series (Routledge) in 2014, 250-300 pages, with 8-12 chapters. A 300-500 word abstract should be sent to wenchen2006(a)gmail.com by March 1, 2013. Initial screening decisions will be made by April 1, 2013. Authors of accepted abstracts will be expected to submit a full chapter two weeks prior to the conference, to be held in Austin in the third week of October 2013.
