Paperback Announcement--Wordplay and the Discourse of Video Games
by Paul, Christopher 20 Feb '13

20 Feb '13

Routledge just released my book, Wordplay and the Discourse of Video Games, in paperback and ebook. I'm excited that the book can now be procured at a more reasonable price point. The publisher blurb for the book is: In this timely new book, Christopher Paul analyzes how the words we use to talk about video games and the structures that are produced within games shape a particular way of gaming by focusing on how games create meaning, lead to identification and division, persuade, and circulate ideas. Paul examines the broader social discourse about gaming, including: the way players are socialized into games; the impact of the lingering association of video games as kid's toys; the dynamics within specific games (including Grand Theft Auto and EA Sports Games); and the ways in which players participate in shaping the discourse of games, demonstrated through examples like the reward system of World of Warcraft and the development of theorycraft. Overall, this book illustrates how video games are shaped by words, design and play; all of which are negotiated, ongoing practices among the designers, players, and society that construct the discourse of video game And the Table of Contents: Introduction: The New Rhetoric of Video Games I. The Context 1. Socializing Gamers 2. Video Games as 'Kid's' Toys 3. Talking Game Design 4. Consoles Read Rhetorically II. The Texts 5.GTA, Humor, and Protagonists 6. This freedom of choice allows players to do what they want when they want, aligning well with the constructivist paradigm of learning. This opens up a host of possibilities for using these game approaches in education to potentially improve learner’s learning experience and performance. This special issue focuses on sharing experiences and innovations in theoretical and conceptual issues related to the development of practical mobile and internet-based educational games. The aim is to provide readers with evidences and experiments that account for learners' experiences and perceptions related to knowledge and concepts acquisition through game approaches in various disciplines and domains. Guest Editors: Dr. Maiga Chang (maiga.chang(a)gmail.com) Athabasca University, Canada Dr. Ming-Puu Chen (mpchen(a)ntnu.edu.tw) National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan Suggested topics: We cordially invite authors to submit high quality manuscripts for any application domain as long as the core of the manuscript falls into the scope of the special issue: - Artificial intelligence in educational games - Educational role-playing games - Internet-based educational game development - Mobile and Internet educational game genres - Mobile augmented reality games - Mobile educational game development - Mobile role-playing learning in museums - Experiences of using mobile educational games - Experiences of using Internet-based educational games - Practical applications of mobile or Internet-based educational games - Successful cases of using educational games in informal or formal education context and settings - Not-so-successful cases and the lessons learnt Manuscript guidelines: All submissions have to follow RPTEL journal manuscript guidelines and should be submitted to guest editors via emails (maiga.chang(a)gmail.com) by April 15, 2013. Cassian, The Journal of Visual Culture recently called for abstracts for a special issue on memetics, so there should be a very helpful special issue coming soon. In the meantime, I would suggest my paper on the nuclear meme as possibly helpful. CFP: Radical Ecologies: (Re)Grounding Digital Pedagogy (MLA 2014 Special Session) 3/1/13
by Pavel Cenkl 19 Feb '13

19 Feb '13

Please note the deadline for this MLA special session is March 1st. -- Radical Ecologies: (Re)Grounding Digital Pedagogy A Special Session proposal for the 2014 MLA Convention This special session seeks dynamic workshop-style presentations to engage participants in new ecologies of learning and leading edge ideas that connect ecological and educational systems. The session aims to explore the idea that technology and ecology need not be mutually exclusive and that they can play an essential role in the humanities classroom. Drawing on points of intersection between experiential liberal arts education, digital humanities, biomimicry, sustainability, and ecopsychology, ‘Radical Ecologies’ will engage instructors and administrators in course development strategies and in helping students plan their own learning by using a systems approach to curriculum design. This session is proposed to be an interactive and engaging series of workshops that enable participants to (1) take away tangible first steps to implementing ecologically-based digital course and curriculum design and (2) recognize the opportunities for learners at all levels in thinking experientially and ecologically about curriculum design. Questions might include: How can ecological thinking provide a model for a more intentional and dynamic liberal arts pedagogy? Can digital technologies help us develop more ecologically focused learning environments and curricula? How can teachers integrate ecological thinking into new and existing courses, units, and overall curriculum design? Is there a role for ecological thinking in developing humanities curricula? How can ecological concepts (re)shape digitally-inflected pedagogy? Please email questions and/or a 250-400 word abstract by 1 March 2013 to Pavel Cenkl at pcenkl(a)sterlingcollege.edu. -- Pavel Cenkl Dean of the College Sterling College Craftsbury Common, VT 05827 pcenkl(a)sterlingcollege.edu 802-586-7711 ext.140 www.sterlingcollege.edu
