Dear all, We are adding a lectureship to our growing programme of teaching and research in digital cultures. It should be highly relevant to folk on this list and we are interested in international candidates. The post has some preferences (gaming studies and internet in developing economies) but those are preferences rather than requirements. -------- Original Message -------- CALL FOR PAPERS The Spectacular/Ordinary/Contested Media City May 15–-17, 2013 Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland In contemporary cities, the effects of advanced telecommunications and commodified media exist everywhere around us. In both eye-catching and oblique ways, mass and personalised media forms reshape our spatial practices and perceptions of specific milieus and the city as a whole. We invite presentations that deal particularly with the following issues: • role of media and surveillance technologies in the spectacularisation of urban public spaces and events • the ways in which media technologies and representations become part of the taken-for-granted perceptions and routinised practices and rhythms of urban life • the actual and potential contributions of mass and personalised media forms to the contestation of economic, political and cultural hegemonies in cities Throughout the interdisciplinary symposium, the spectacular, ordinary and contested aspects of the media city will be brainstormed through questions such as: What is the relationship of materiality of media and symbolic media representations in the construction of densely digitalised urban milieus? To what extent and how is media-saturation steering people’s urban activities towards automated and un-reflected modes? Facebook pages from the past?

Dear list members, I am preparing a book chapter about the history of Facebook, and one of the main sources is the website itself since I intend to identify the changes in layout, functions, etc. However, my own collection of Facebook webpages is very limited, so I would like to know if some of you are in possession of screen dumps of old Facebook pages? If have checked the Internet Archive (archive.org) but to my great surprise the website had been removed! In 2009 I wrote a small article about the first five years of Facebook's history, and I found a number of old versions in the Internet Archive (thefacebook.com as well as facebook.com) but coming back to the archive now these versions have been removed. I have contacted the Internet Archive, without any result - probably the siteholder has asked the archive to remove the website, for whatever reason. This is an example of how volatile our object of study is, even if it is archived - if web archives are not based on legal deposit laws archived material does not necessarily remain accessible in the archive. Therefore, if any of you do have screen dumps of old Facebook webpages please write to me off-list - I would be happy to receive whatever you have. And please feel free to forward this request to whoever you think might be able to help. Best wishes, Jo ---- *Digital Transformers Symposium, Manchester, 23rd May 2013* The AHRC funded *Digital Transformers Symposium* ( http://www.digitaltransformersnetwork.com) is a one day event aimed at postgraduate students and early career researchers in the Humanities on the methodological and conceptual approaches and techniques required for the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. The event will combine presentations and workshops, giving participants hands on experience of new techniques for working with digital data and space for discussion about the methodological, conceptual and disciplinary challenges these emerging techniques and practices are generating. Ways of understanding and analysing digital data and digitally mediated environments are varied and complex. The skills required are increasingly specialised and do not necessarily conform to any particular theoretical or epistemological perspective. At the same time, an expanding set of broadly applicable concepts, techniques and methods are emerging that can be used across, and tailored to, the needs of multiple disciplines in the Humanities. Examples include data visualisation techniques, text and data mining, and network analysis, and theories and concepts around the socio-cultural, socio-political and cognitive processes that affect the use and interpretation of digital data and digitally mediated environments. Key symposium themes to be explored therefore include: - Key concepts and theories that inform the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. - The wider socio-political, philosophical and cultural concepts/issues surrounding these. - Methodological approaches to the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. - Particular techniques and tools that can be used to study, analyse, and represent digital data and digitally mediated environments.
