We are interested in understanding and supporting the evolution of social theory, socio-technical theory, and social informatics in information systems research. We want to highlight research that uses these approaches to critically examine the constitution of information and communications technologies, and their roles in organizations and society, the most important questions about IS, organizations, and society. We particularly invite IS research that applies, builds on, compares, or critiques these social theories. We are interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and theorize about application domains including large-scale social and organizational phenomena. We seek to attract research papers and research-in-progress papers from all IS researchers who are using the work of social theorists, organizational theorists, sociotechnical theorists, and cultural anthropologists, symbolic interactionists, and many others. We are particularly interested in research that makes use of social theory 1) to address issues of designing the digital future, 2) to answer questions about how we are interacting with ICTs in our work and social lives, and 3) to critically examine the constitution of ICTs, and their roles in the design, maintenance and dissolution of virtual communities. This will be the 13th consecutive year for the Mini Track at AMCIS, and we hope to continue a tradition of high quality paper submissions, thought-provoking presentations and lively discussion for all IS researchers using, or considering the use of, social theory in their work. SUGGESTED TOPICS We are interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and understand · The implications of social networks for organizations and social groups · The significance of cyberinfrastructure for commerce, governing and research and development · The relationships between ICTs and people as they participate in online communities and virtual teams · Online communities of practice, their processes and outcomes · The dynamics of crowdsourcing online · Hacktivism and the use of technology to mobilize resources and advance ideology · Unintended consequences of technology implementation and use in organizations and in social life · Scientific collaboration and scholarly communication as enabled and constrained by ICTs · The impacts of social computing on our social and work lives Submission Process: Full paper submissions must be made electronically through the AMCIS on-line submission system. [Apologies for cross-posting] 19th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS 2013) Hyperconnected World: Anything Anywhere Anytime Chicago, Illinois, USA (http://amcis2013.aisnet.org) 15–17 August 2013 Call for Papers for the mini track on “Global and Cross Cultural Aspects of Crowdsourced Content Production and Knowledge Repositories” Track: Global, International, and Cross Cultural Issues in IS (SIGCCRIS) DESCRIPTION With the advent of Web 2.0, many crowdsourced content production and repository sites, such as Wikipedia, YouTube, and Yahoo! Answers, are flourishing. Wikipedia, for example, became one of the top ten most popular websites. Many scholars have focused attention on information quality and processes of mass knowledge production, as well as the social aspects of these projects. However, significantly less attention has been given to their global nature. Wikipedia, for example, includes articles in 285 languages, Yahoo! Answers International is available in more than 25 languages, and YouTube in more than 60 languages. This global nature of such knowledge creation and content repository projects offers a rich socio-technical environment to examine international and cross cultural issues online. Previous studies are predisposed to primarily investigate the English version of these repositories, yet there is a need for more cross cultural research. The purpose of this minitrack is to showcase research on knowledge production projects that goes beyond their English versions. The minitrack welcomes both empirical and conceptual work and solicits innovative analysis of international and cross cultural aspects of these projects. We invite papers, research in progress, and panels. Colleagues, A final reminder that abstracts are due Tuesday, Jan 15 for the following: Call for Papers: Special Issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture The Host City: (Re)Locating Media Events in the Network Era Guest Editor: Robert Moses Peaslee, Texas Tech University Assistant Guest Editor: Brendan Kredell, University of Calgary As media events (Couldry, Hepp & Krotz, 2010; Dayan & Katz,1992) of all stripe proliferate around the world, a variety of stakeholdersjockey for position and advantage in the geographical and cultural contextschosen to host them. Media events, as Dayan and Katz famously characterizedthem, were defined in part by their liveness, their physical remoteness from the majority of their “audience,” their interruptive nature, and their status, nonetheless, as pre-planned (prominent examples today would include the Olympic games, the annual film festival at Cannes, the Super Bowl, and music festivals such as Chicago’s Lollapalooza). Many of these events are consistently located, well-established and have assumed a defensive position aimed at maintainingbrand identity and prestige. Others, such as the Olympics, change locations, while others (such as Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest) are ascendant, and still others are nascent at best. Each host community, however, has a unique relationship to their event(s), and each of these relationships provides fertile ground for investigating the role of media events in promoting discourses of community identity, establishing infrastructural and externalnetworks, reifying the importance of being mediated, utilizing the "local” to speak "globally,” and a variety of other processes. This special issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture seeks research articles engaging the media events literature and investigating the relationship between event and location, between location-as-text and location-as-infrastructure, between location and audience, between location and industry, and other relevant relationships, all in the context of networked media structures. Some relevant topics areas include, but are by no means limited to: Host city branding and image management Networked media events: the impact of social media Media events and host city governance Discourses of place in the media event “Thereness” and virtuality in the media event Media events as sites of resistance Community and ritual Media events, promotion and (g)local media Fannish practices in/around the media event The political economy of the media event The audience experience: affect, memory, place Media events and mobility Comparative analyses of host cities in media event contexts Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 500 words no later than January 15, 2013 to robert.peaslee(a)ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu><mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu><mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu%3E%3Cmailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu>>. Full articles will be subject to a blind peer-review process, meaning that acceptance of an abstract does not denote acceptance of the full article. We anticipate accepting approximately 12 abstracts in order to produce an issue of 6-7 articles. This has been observed and discussed for a while but theoretical dimensions on how technology changes regulatory, societal and economic structures have lagged. As we are moving to an entirely new generation of media, new academic approaches are needed to guide networks, users, content providers, and policy makers, This calls for analysis and new conceptual and methodological models. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University (IIP), and the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (CITI) are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals in which "Theory of Broadband: Regulation, Networks and Applications" serves as the main theme. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a two day by-invitation workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen experts and to be held at Columbia University in New York, NY. This Workshop is one of a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Media Democracy Fund. Presenters at the workshop will be invited to submit their completed papers for review by the Journal of Information Policy (www.jip-online.org) We seek papers that focus on the next generation of issues. Numerous studies have focused on mapping the challenges and opportunities faced in designing technologies that are appropriated to the needs of contemporary families. However, few research lines have focused on supporting families with diverse structures and situations (i.e. divorced, same-sex, dealing with death, work-related periodic separation and reunion). This workshop aims to explore the research space of family design and further our understanding of what it means to design technologies for diverse family structures. During the workshop we will readdress the meaning of a diverse family, the methods used to conduct family research as well as discuss design and evaluation techniques with a focus on user experience. This one-day workshop will bring together researchers, practitioners and designers who are interested in furthering our understanding of designing technologies for diverse families. Indicative examples of these family types include those separated by divorce, families that experience periodic transitions between being together and apart due to work-related reasons, foster and many-children families, same-sex and multicultural families as well as families experiencing chronic illnesses. During the workshop we will revisit the meaning of a diverse family, the methods used to conduct family research as well as discuss design and evaluation techniques with a focus on user experience. We invite authors to submit their *4-6 page position papers** *(in the Extended Abstract Format<https://owa.unimelb.edu.au/owa/redir.aspx?C=IN_vHmCOgEe6O6YtgbyJe-Fb4JHlxM8…> ), *video or photo essays* (up to a maximum of 2 minutes of viewable content), or *fieldwork narratives* (4-6 pages) that relate to the broad theme of diverse families and technology. Discussion topics include but are not limited to: ▪ Theoretical conceptualizations of diverse families; ▪ empirical studies within this space; ▪ methods and tools for diverse families; ▪ evaluation practices of technologies for diverse families; ▪ guidelines or lessons learned; ▪ ethical considerations. Position papers will be reviewed by the organizers according to their significance, quality of presentation, as well as their potential to stimulate discussion. The accepted papers will be uploaded to the workshop's website.
