The Onlife Manifesto -Digital Agenda for Europe - European Commission
by Charles Ess 11 Feb '13

11 Feb '13

Dear AoIRists, This may be of interest to many of us, for a variety of reasons: Digital Agenda for Europe European Commission The Onlife Initiative - A Europe 2020 Initiative Chairman: Luciano Floridi Members: Stefana Broadbent - Nicole Dewandre - Charles Ess - Jean-Gabriel Ganascia - Mireille Hildebrandt - Yiannis Laouris - Claire Lobet-Maris - Sarah Oates - Ugo Pagallo - Judith Simon - May Thorseth - Peter-Paul Verbeek The Onlife Manifesto and the book ("user's manual") accompanying it are now publicly and freely available online: https://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/sites/digital-agenda/files/Onlife_Initia tive.pdf The Onlife Initiative - Concept Reengineering: rethinking public spaces in the digital transition The deployment of ICTs and their uptake by society affects radically the human condition by modifying our relationships to ourselves, to others and to the world around us. The increasing pervasiveness of ICTs upsets established reference frameworks and blurs the boundaries between real and virtual, shifting the primacy from entities to connections & information. Concept reengineering puts us in the best position to reflect meaningfully on what is happening to us, and thereby helps us envision the future in positive terms. Fear of the new or rejection of the unknown can be overcome by better understanding of the concepts we are dealing with. The "Onlife initiative" aims to help us better understand these concepts. CFP: M/C Journal 'mining' Issue
by Axel Bruns 11 Feb '13

11 Feb '13

Dear AoIR friends, some of you may be interested in the following journal CFP on the topic of 'mining' (including both literal and figurative meanings of the term - e.g. data mining). Given the renewed attention on public access to scholarship, I should also note that M/C Journal has always been an online, open-access publication; all articles are published under a Creative Commons licence. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 14 Jan. 2013 M/C - Media and Culture http://www.media-culture.org.au/ is calling for contributors to the 'mining' issue of M/C Journal http://journal.media-culture.org.au/ M/C Journal is inviting new contributors. Founded in 1998, M/C is a crossover journal between the popular and the academic, and a blind- and peer-reviewed journal. Our Website at http://journal.media-culture.org.au/provides open access to all past issues. To find out how and in what format to contribute your work, visit http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/about/submissions. Call for Papers: 'mining' Edited by Dean Laplonge and Axel Bruns It's hard to escape the practices of mining. In some ways, we have become obsessed with mining. Mining occupies discussions about the economy, the environment, the labour market, politics and land rights. Our airports are packed full with high-vis people flying to and from mine sites. We seem to view mining as a limitless pit of gold which we can explore/exploit for personal financial gain and to secure research funding. And it's as if there are no limits to what we are willing to mine. The literal interpretation of 'mining' is the extraction of something from the ground. But in addition to such mining of physical resources, the exploitation of information at large scale - known as data mining - is also turning into a burgeoning industry, generating new intellectual and economic opportunities while raising complex ethical concerns. In all its forms, 'mining' therefore is easily associated with engineering, geology, mathematics, economics, sociology, and other scientific practices. But where are the cultural analyses of 'mining'? Where are the articles that engage critically and cleverly with the business and stories of mining? If we consider 'mining' through the lens of gender or ethnicity, through queer studies, poststructuralism or feminism, through the media or critical accounts of academic intervention, what do we come up with? Are there ways of viewing mining that are not tied to the 'hard' sciences? What different views of mining emerge when we view it through a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary lens? The business of mining is not just a matter of extracting minerals from the ground which we can then use for their intended purpose. Data mining is also not just an extraction of 'big data' that uncovers some hidden, absolute truths waiting to be found. The ways we choose to analyse mining result in the way we view this business. This issue of M/C Journal will focus on the differing interpretations and application of 'mining'. Specifically, we hope to re-envision mining as a cultural practice which can be read in multiple ways. We therefore invite authors to offer some innovative interpretations of how mining works, and to explore and expand on the cultures of mining. We encourage authors to speak outside the dominant narrative of mining as a process of extraction of the real and to explore how mining can be viewed otherwise. Areas for consideration include: * the workplace cultures of mine site workplaces and the behaviours of miners * reinterpretations of the history of mining * reinterpretations of the practice of mining as a site of economic development or environmental damage * critiques of emerging practices in data mining * explorations of the data mining industry as it establishes itself * analyses of the relationship between mining and community, environment and people * feminist approaches to mining * gender, sex and sexuality-and their relationship to mining * mining and ownership, privacy, security Prospective contributors should email an abstract of 100-250 words and a brief biography to the issue editors. Abstracts should include the article title and should describe your research question, approach, and argument. Biographies should be about three sentences (maximum 75 words) and should include your institutional affiliation and research interests. Articles should be 3000 words (plus bibliography). All articles will be refereed and must adhere to MLA style (6th edition). Article deadline: 1 Mar. 2012 Issue release date: 1 May 2012 M/C Journal was founded (as "M/C - A Journal of Media and Culture") in 1998 as a place of public intellectualism analysing and critiquing the meeting of media and culture. mandatory reporting for online health research
by Yukari Seko 11 Feb '13

11 Feb '13

Dear AoIRists, I'm facing a tricky problem and would like to borrow your wisdom! I am designing a small pilot project to interview creators of self-injury imagery via email or text chat. Last week I received comments from the REB at my institution (a mental health hospital + research institution) that raised a couple of concerns about ethical responsibility. In particular, I am seeking help/suggestion for the following two questions; 1. How can distress and sucidality be determined by email? 2. How can mandatory reporting requirements be met? Seemingly, these comments are directed to clinical professionals who are eligible to assess the level of urgency in situ (i.e. distress and/or suicidality). So I am not sure how non-medical professionals like myself address this issue to convince the REB. I'm consulting with clinicians but they don't have much experience conducing studies online. Also, mandatory reporting for online researchers is a tricky one. I'm planning to recruit participants at an online forum for self-injurers, where members come from all over the world. How can an online research fulfill mandatory reporting requirements if participants are from different jurisdictions? To whom should I report? Thanks a lot in advance for your help. Andee, See the big report that Keith Hampton and associates did for Pew, with complex findings. Some papers spun off of it. Find on Keith's Rutgers website. I think that we need to honor repeatedly the entire Pew Internet crew -- starting with Lee --- but including Amanda, Mary, Susannah, Aaron, John Horrigan, (days of yore), pollster Evans Witt et al for the great sustained work they've done. y Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. NEW BOOK - Facebook Democracy
by jose marichal 10 Feb '13

10 Feb '13

Colleagues, I thought my recently published book might be of interest to some of you. Cheers, Jose FACEBOOK DEMOCRACY: THE ARCHITECTURE OF DISCLOSURE AND THE THREAT TO PUBLIC LIFE <http://www.ashgate.com/isbn/9781409444305> Description - In July 2010, Facebook had over 500 million subscribers worldwide and the rapid rise of the site prompted Time magazine to name Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg its person of the year for 2010. This novel book advances our understanding of how democratic citizens are transformed by the "Facebook revolution". Despite increasing interest in politics and popular media, there has been little academic work on the impact of Facebook on politics in general, and on democratic processes in particular. The work that does exist has been limited to Facebook's impact on politics as a mobilization tool used by social movement activists. In this book, José Marichal argues that understanding Facebook's impact on political processes requires an understanding of how Facebook's architecture of disclosure shapes the construction of individuals' political identities by drawing users further into their pre-selected social networks. Drawing on a number of disciplines and an ethnographic analysis of 250 Facebook political groups, Marichal explores how Facebook's emphasis on social connection impacts key dimensions of political participation: e.g., mobilization, deliberation, and attitude formation. - *Contents: *Introduction: the allure of Facebook; Facebook and the utopian/dystopian dialectic; Facebook and the architecture of disclosure; Facebook and the decline of the public; The personal citizen; Engagement as personal citizens; The digital front stage and deliberation; Facebook and mobilization: beyond the Facebook revolution; Privacy in the age of personal politics; Friending the nation-state: social networking and power; Conclusions: how to listen on Facebook; Bibliography; Index. - *About the Author: *José Marichal is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at California Lutheran University, USA. - *Reviews: *‘Conceptualizing Facebook (and social media more generally) as architectures that structure political behavior is an original way of examining what difference social media make. This study provides fresh insights about both the problems and potential offered by these new communication tools.’ Karen Mossberger, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA ‘A fascinating and much needed account of how online connectedness and disclosure impact mobilization, deliberation, engagement, friendship, privacy and more. A must read for all those interested in the breathtaking changes that the Internet, and particularly social media, introduces to both public and private domains of our everyday experiences.’ Azi Lev-On, Ariel University Centre, Israel -- _______________________________________________________________________________________ josé marichal, ph.d. | associate professor | political science <http://about.me/marichal> department | california lutheran university 60 w. olsen road | #3800 | thousand oaks, ca 91360 805-493-3328

physical/digital worlds

Hi, everyone, Thanks so much for all your help, from those of you commenting both here in the list and off of it. Yes, Barry, it was Nathan Jurgenson's work that first inspired me to carry on with my current project, sorry I didn't mention knowing about it. I also consulted with him initially, well before posting my inquiry. Nathan and PJ Rey are running their third Theorizing the Web conference, this year in NYC. Of course, much work has dealt with the issue some, including mine on relationships, identities and communities, and thanks for your own important list of contributions, your references. Thankfully there is now such a wealth of writing and research available. However, some of us think we still have a way to go in, to use your words, "flesh"-ing out dimensions of the processes. There's really still much more to say about it at this time, imo. Most these days seem to not only accept that online/mobile/cmc interaction is real but that it is less discrete from other activities than many of us early internet researchers and private citizens had originally conceived, and experienced back then. Anyone else who has specific references, please feel free to continue sending them to me and/or posting them. Here are my original questions previously posted to the aoirlist. I'm hoping the formatting is better this time: "For a piece I'm preparing on interaction back and forth between online and offline or from digital to physical worlds and back, I'm looking for references about how that works for people, especially those who are members of online communities. More than particular data to show this communication in process, although that is good too, I want to conceptualize themovement, the "flow" from one realm to another, to describe what is happening. Also, how does the online communication, including that through mobile phones, affect the offline interaction, and how do the offline encounters affect what goes on inside the online communities and in other social media containing some of the same people interacting offline. This project is part of my music fan research on fan communities, identities, and relationships. I'm already aware of the articles in the first issue of Mobile Media and Communication (January, 2013), and of Lauren Sessions-Goulet's excellent paper of a few years back on offline meetings and online communities, and have a few other helpful sources. I've done a body of work on romantic online relationships so I understand many of the dynamics there. Please feel free to write off list or on. Thanks so much in advance! cheers, andee (andrea baker)" thanks! --a

In terms of the internet/flesh "realms" issue - this is something I'm going to working on quite a bit I hope, and I discuss it in some detail in "Rethinking Digital Anthropology" (In Digital Anthropology. Heather A. Horst and Daniel Miller, editors. Pp. 39–60. London: Berg, 2012.) For details, goto http://faculty.sites.uci.edu/boellstorff/publications/ On Feb 9, 2013, at 3:01 PM, air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org wrote: > Send Air-L mailing list submissions to > air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > air-l-request(a)listserv.aoir.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > air-l-owner(a)listserv.aoir.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Air-L digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. internet/flesh "realms" (Barry Wellman) > > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Sat, 9 Feb 2013 14:34:58 -0500 > From: Barry Wellman <wellman(a)chass.utoronto.ca> > To: aoir list <air-l(a)aoir.org> > Subject: [Air-L] internet/flesh "realms" > Message-ID: > <Pine.SGI.4.64.1302091427571.28287808(a)origin.chass.utoronto.ca> > Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed > > There's been a lot written and researched on this already. > But the issue keeps coming on.
