Colleagues, With all due apologies for cross-posting: Call for Papers: Special Issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture The Host City: (Re)Locating Media Events in the Network Era Guest Editor: Robert Moses Peaslee, Texas Tech University Assistant Guest Editor: Brendan Kredell, University of Calgary As media events (Couldry, Hepp & Krotz, 2010; Dayan & Katz,1992) of all stripe proliferate around the world, a variety of stakeholdersjockey for position and advantage in the geographical and cultural contextschosen to host them. Media events, as Dayan and Katz famously characterizedthem, were defined in part by their liveness, their physical remoteness from the majority of their “audience,” their interruptive nature, and their status, nonetheless, as pre-planned (prominent examples today would include the Olympic games, the annual film festival at Cannes, the Super Bowl, and music festivals such as Chicago’s Lollapalooza). Many of these events are consistently located, well-established and have assumed a defensive position aimed at maintainingbrand identity and prestige. Others, such as the Olympics, change locations, while others (such as Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest) are ascendant, and still others are nascent at best. Each host community, however, has a unique relationship to their event(s), and each of these relationships provides fertile ground for investigating the role of media events in promoting discourses of community identity, establishing infrastructural and externalnetworks, reifying the importance of being mediated, utilizing the "local” to speak "globally,” and a variety of other processes. This special issue of Interactions: Studies in Communication and Culture seeks research articles engaging the media events literature and investigating the relationship between event and location, between location-as-text and location-as-infrastructure, between location and audience, between location and industry, and other relevant relationships, all in the context of networked media structures. Some relevant topics areas include, but are by no means limited to: Host city branding and image management Networked media events: the impact of social media Media events and host city governance Discourses of place in the media event “Thereness” and virtuality in the media event Media events as sites of resistance Community and ritual Media events, promotion and (g)local media Fannish practices in/around the media event The political economy of the media event The audience experience: affect, memory, place Media events and mobility Comparative analyses of host cities in media event contexts Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 500 words no later than January 15, 2013 to robert.peaslee(a)ttu.edu<mailto:robert.peaslee@ttu.edu>. Abstracts will be reviewed by the editors on a rolling basis until then. Those authors whose abstracts are accepted will be required to submit full articles of 6000-7000 words (inclusive of notes, appendices, and works cited) no later than March 15, 2013. Full articles will be subject to a blind peer-review process, meaning that acceptance of an abstract does not denote acceptance of the full article. We anticipate accepting approximately 12 abstracts in order to produce an issue of 6-7 articles. Any revisions required by the reviewers will be expected by mid-June in order to publish the issue in early 2014. Authors wishing to propose relevant book reviews for the issue should also submit an abstract by January 15, 2013. Website: http://www.ecscw2013.org/ Master Classes and Workshops will be held on Saturday 21 - Sunday 22 September. Submission deadline for proposals: March 8, 2013 Notification: April 11, 2013 Proposed workshop paper deadline: June 28, 2013 Workshops Workshops are designed to offer an informal environment for focused group discussion and learning. They can be in the format of presentation followed by synthesis of contributions and discussion. However, we also encourage proposals that include activities such as extensive hands-on sessions, site explorations, or applied method sessions to advance practical understandings of emerging application areas, concepts, and new methodologies. Each workshop should generate ideas that give the ECSCW community a new, organized way of thinking about a given topic or suggest promising directions for future research. Workshops may be half-day or full day sessions. Workshop proposals should consist of an abstract and a detailed proposal. The abstract should be no more than 150 words. The body of the proposal should be no more than 3000 words, and should include a description of the theme(s) of the workshop, the workshop activities and goals, the duration of the workshop (one or two full days), the background of the organizer(s), the maximum number of participants, and the means of recruiting and selecting participants. We encourage workshop organizers to create web-based resources for their workshops so that advertising, submission and organization can be handled online. Submissions should be sent through the ECSCW 2013 electronic submission system. Accepted workshops will need to provide a short description of the workshop for publication on the conference web site containing the workshop title, names and affiliations of organizers, 150-word abstract, workshop web site, and position paper submission or other participation requirements. Accepted workshops may optionally provide a 2-page Workshop Program for printing in the conference supplemental proceedings. The program should contain the workshop title, 150-word abstract, objectives, participant names and schedule. Master Classes Master classes will offer a small number of participants the opportunity to learn about specific CSCW concepts, methods and techniques from recognized experts. Master classes may be for half-day or full day sessions. Master classes proposals should be no more than 3000 words, and should include a description of the theme(s) of the master class, the background of the organizer(s) and the maximum number of participants. Hi everyone, I’d like to let you know about some resources that might be of interest to researchers interested in Facebook and other social-media platforms. I’ve been working on three things that might be of interest to the people on this list. *Review Article* We recently published the first comprehensive review of the Facebook literature, covering every empirical we could find published on FB through 2011. This project was borne out of a realization that there was a lot of research out there but we were frustrated not find any source that brought it all together. Twitter and other micro-blogging platforms, with their short messages, in some cases circulated to millions of followers, were at first viewed with condescension and amusement: famously David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, opined, "Too many tweets make a twat." Other media initially treated Twitter as offering platforms for celebrities, pools of banality, streams of dumbed-down opinions. But people using Twitter quickly found an enormous range of diverse uses, revelling in opportunities for creativity that microblogging and associated applications offered. People involved Twitter in organising revolutions, disseminating scientific findings, promoting brands, communicating with friends and crafting new forms of artistic endeavours and communications. Where Twitter is not allowed, as in China, other microblogging platforms have taken on similar functions. This conference brings together a range of researchers doing detailed analyses of the discourse, practices, and social interactions of microblogging communities. Mobile Survey Technologies

Hello, I am looking for a web-based technology (in other words, a technology that does NOT require downloading an application) that can be used to create surveys that are accessible using cross-platform mobile devices (smartphones; iPhone/Android, tablet computer, etc.). If you know of any or have used any that you found to be particularly user-friendly and useful, will you please share them? [Apologies for cross-posting] Call For Papers: AMCIS Mini-track: Social Theory in Information Systems Research (STIR '13) 19th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS): Hyperconnected World: Anything Anywhere Anytime Chicago, IL, August 15-17, 2013 Conference Website: http://amcis2013.aisnet.org/ Description: This Mini Track solicits papers that make use of social theory in information systems research that draws upon such approaches as sociotechnical theory, critical theory, social informatics, organizational theory, cultural anthropology, sociology and others. We are interested in understanding and supporting the evolution of social theory, socio-technical theory, and social informatics in information systems research. We want to highlight research that uses these approaches to critically examine the constitution of information and communications technologies, and their roles in organizations and society, the most important questions about IS, organizations, and society. We particularly invite IS research that applies, builds on, compares, or critiques these social theories. We are interested in high quality empirical and conceptual work that uses social theory to study and theorize about application domains including large-scale social and organizational phenomena. We seek to attract research papers and research-in-progress papers from all IS researchers who are using the work of social theorists, organizational theorists, sociotechnical theorists, and cultural anthropologists, symbolic interactionists, and many others.
