Facebook pages from the past?
by Niels Brügger 16 Jan '13

16 Jan '13

Dear list members, I am preparing a book chapter about the history of Facebook, and one of the main sources is the website itself since I intend to identify the changes in layout, functions, etc. However, my own collection of Facebook webpages is very limited, so I would like to know if some of you are in possession of screen dumps of old Facebook pages? If have checked the Internet Archive (archive.org) but to my great surprise the website had been removed! In 2009 I wrote a small article about the first five years of Facebook's history, and I found a number of old versions in the Internet Archive (thefacebook.com as well as facebook.com) but coming back to the archive now these versions have been removed. I have contacted the Internet Archive, without any result - probably the siteholder has asked the archive to remove the website, for whatever reason. This is an example of how volatile our object of study is, even if it is archived - if web archives are not based on legal deposit laws archived material does not necessarily remain accessible in the archive. Therefore, if any of you do have screen dumps of old Facebook webpages please write to me off-list - I would be happy to receive whatever you have. And please feel free to forward this request to whoever you think might be able to help. CfP Digital Transformers Symposium, Manchester, May 2013
by Joanne Bates 16 Jan '13

16 Jan '13

Dear all, Please see the following call for papers for the forthcoming Digital Transformers Symposium. Best wishes, Jo ---- *Digital Transformers Symposium, Manchester, 23rd May 2013* The AHRC funded *Digital Transformers Symposium* ( http://www.digitaltransformersnetwork.com) is a one day event aimed at postgraduate students and early career researchers in the Humanities on the methodological and conceptual approaches and techniques required for the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. The event will combine presentations and workshops, giving participants hands on experience of new techniques for working with digital data and space for discussion about the methodological, conceptual and disciplinary challenges these emerging techniques and practices are generating. Ways of understanding and analysing digital data and digitally mediated environments are varied and complex. The skills required are increasingly specialised and do not necessarily conform to any particular theoretical or epistemological perspective. At the same time, an expanding set of broadly applicable concepts, techniques and methods are emerging that can be used across, and tailored to, the needs of multiple disciplines in the Humanities. Examples include data visualisation techniques, text and data mining, and network analysis, and theories and concepts around the socio-cultural, socio-political and cognitive processes that affect the use and interpretation of digital data and digitally mediated environments. Key symposium themes to be explored therefore include: - Key concepts and theories that inform the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. - The wider socio-political, philosophical and cultural concepts/issues surrounding these. - Methodological approaches to the study of digital data and digitally mediated environments. - Particular techniques and tools that can be used to study, analyse, and represent digital data and digitally mediated environments. The symposium organisers invite papers from research students and early career researchers in the Humanities that explore these, and related, themes. *Submission information* Abstracts (maximum 300 words) for *15 minute* research and position papers related to the symposium themes are requested by the deadline of *28 February 2013* to *digitaltransformersnetwork(a)gmail.com* Proposals for panels of 3-4 speakers are also welcome. A proposal should have three to four papers and should consist of a panel title and short framing text, and abstracts for all the papers with paper titles and authors. Proposals are requested by the deadline of *28 February 2013* to * digitaltransformersnetwork(a)gmail.com* *Notification of acceptance: 31 March 2013* A small amount of funding is available on a competitive basis to cover travel and subsistence costs for participants unable to source funding from elsewhere. Applications for funding will open in March 2013. *Organisers and funders* The Digital Transformers Symposium is funded by a Collaborative Skills Development training grant awarded by the AHRC. It is being co-organised by postgraduate students and early career researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University's Department of Information and Communications and the University of Sheffield's Information School. *For further information please see ** http://www.digitaltransformersnetwork.com/<https://db3prd0104.outlook.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=xIsVrcmbqUiWohuOIS3eec5nRAm…> or contact us at *digitaltransformersnetwork(a)gmail.com<https://db3prd0104.outlook.com/owa/redir.aspx?C=xIsVrcmbqUiWohuOIS3eec5nRAm…> -- Jo Bates Lecturer Room 236, Information School, University of Sheffield, Sheffield S1 4DP, United Kingdom Email: jo.bates(a)sheffield.ac.uk Phone: 0114 2222648

Paper Call: Government, Policy-making and the Internet (Policy and Internet)
by David Sutcliffe 15 Jan '13

15 Jan '13

Dear all, Please see below a paper call for a special issue on "Government, Policy-making and the Internet" (http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/news/?id=776) to appear in Policy and Internet (deadline: 1 April 2013). Guest eds: Dr Jill L. Tao, Dr Jill Satran. Best wishes, David David Sutcliffe Managing Editor, Policy and Internet http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1944-2866 ** Policy and Internet Call for Papers: Special Issue on Government, Policy-making and the Internet ** Governments have long been in the business of providing the means for communication to and amongst its citizens: from the provision of mail services to telephone lines to air waves, the role of government has been central to social and informational networks. This role is now mediated by Internet-based technologies that dramatically alter the way in which we communicate, reduce the cost of sharing information and reshape the way government formulates and delivers on its policies. Up until now, public sector personnel developed policy based on a wide array of inputs (budget, people, outcomes, etc.) and once the policy was developed, technology experts were brought in to figure out the technological means for implementation. Today's technology is changing that model; technology is now an integral input to the 'tools' of policy development, changing the scope of what is possible and critical to implementation, and therefore the driver in many cases. This special issue calls for academic papers reporting novel empirical research on how the Internet and related ICTs reshapes the way government formulates and delivers on its policies. This includes such questions as: > How does the technology and widespread use of the internet challenge conventional government approaches to policy formulation and implementation? > What approaches are governments taking to adapt service provision and foster citizen engagement? > In what ways does the use of these approaches by public organizations (such as transparency, information sharing and equity of access) clash with political strategy? > How do these approaches bring new players into the policy provision game, and what impact are these new groups having? > To what extent can big data approaches be used in policy-making, how do they alter the demand for government services, and what are the implications for democratization? This list of topics is not exhaustive, and other questions related to government, policy making and the Internet will be considered. Please contact the editors (policyandinternet(a)oii.ox.ac.uk) if you have any queries about how your paper might fit in the issue. ** Paper Submissions The online submission deadline for papers is 1 April 2013. Please indicate in the submission form that the paper is intended for the special issue 'Government, Policy-making and the Internet'. Authors are advised to consult the journal's Guide for Authors before submitting their paper. Authors: Submit your paper now (ScholarOne login page): http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/poi ** About the Guest Editors Dr Jill L. Tao is an associate professor of public administration in the Department of Public Administration at the University of Incheon in South Korea. Prior to entering academia, she worked as a consultant to state and federal government agencies in the United States, primarily in the area of environmental regulation. She worked to build expert knowledge systems that would smooth the interface between citizens and regulatory agencies by utilizing the efficiencies of online resources. Currently, her research focuses on the ever-blurring divide between public and private realms, and the role technology plays in that process. Dr Jill Satran currently serves as the Director of Policy in the Washington Office of the State CIO. She previously served as Washington Governor Chris Gregoire's Deputy Chief of Staff. She also served as the Director of Accountability and Performance within the Governor's Executive Policy Office and was responsible for coordinating the Governor's Economic Recovery team which oversees the implementation of the over $4 billion of Recovery Act funding coming into the state. Dr Satran's previous positions in Washington State government include policy and program analysis for the Governor's Executive Policy Office, the Department of Transportation, the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Committee, and Counsel to the House Transportation Committee. She also has experience as a senior management consultant in the private sector, serving primarily state government agencies. She is a graduate of the University of Washington Law School, and earned a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy from Florida State University. ** About Policy and Internet Policy and Internet aims to be the premier venue for scholars and researchers to set the public policy agenda in the digital era. The journal is edited by the Oxford Internet Institute (University of Oxford) for the Policy Studies Organization (PSO). It was established in 2009 as the first major peer-reviewed journal investigating the implications of the Internet and associated technologies for public policy. The journal is fully multi-disciplinary in scope: perspectives from any academic discipline are welcomed, particularly political science, economics, law, sociology, information science, communications, computer science, psychology, management, geography and medicine. Topics range across policy sectors and regions of the world, including generalised, sectoral or country-specific policy effects. Approaches may include methodological innovation, theoretical development or new data. The Editors are Professor Helen Margetts, Dr Sandra Gonzalez-Bailon and David Sutcliffe (University of Oxford). There are four issues a year, published by Wiley-Blackwell. Contact the Editors: policyandinternet(a)oii.ox.ac.uk [ends]

Reminder - CfP IAMCR CP&T Dublin 2013
by Jo Pierson 15 Jan '13

15 Jan '13

International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Conference, June 25-29, 2013, Dublin (Ireland) Crises, 'Creative Destruction' and the Global Power and Communication Orders http://www.iamcr2013dublin.com Communication Policy and Technology (CP&T) section CALL FOR PAPERS The Communication Policy and Technology (CP&T) Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites submissions for the IAMCR 2013 conference to be held from June 25-29, 2013 in Dublin City University in Dublin (Ireland). The deadline for submissions of extended abstracts and panel proposals is January 28, 2013. The conference will be held under the general theme: Crises, 'Creative Destruction' and the Global Power and Communication Orders. The overall conference theme engages with the concepts of crisis and ‘creative destruction’, associated with periods of intensified flux, change and all-round, multi-dimensional processes of innovation. The theme invites reflections on whether or how the current deep economic/financial crisis and its attendant gales of ‘creative destruction’ may promote fundamental or multiple shifts in the geo-political and communication orders globally. The theme can also be linked to the ways in which users, civil society, states and markets creatively adapt their practices, strategies and tactics in the wake of a crisis, which is often accompanied by the emergence of new values and subsequently new policy frameworks. The Communication Policy and Technology section invites contributions to this overall theme that link and integrate the different levels of policy, industry, civil society and user practices in relation to possible shifts in local, national, regional and global power relations and communication technologies. The latter fits within a framework of the techno-dialectic of changes taking place in communication and media production, diffusion and consumption, on micro, meso, and macro levels. Some claim that we are living in an Internet Age where mediated communication systems generate major opportunities for citizens/consumers/users to become and subsequently stay empowered. However, in times of crisis and techno-economic turnarounds there is also often more pressure for industries and governments to develop ever deeper forms of corporate and political control and surveillance, today through communication systems. While the proclaimed goals of power holders in such an insecure societal and economic context is to more effectively and efficiently interact with and serve their consumers and/or citizens, in reality we seem to be moving ever faster to a dystopian closed and highly monitored information and communication environment in which citizens/users are in fact disempowered. The question is to what extent and how researchers and civil society in the media and communications field can formulate answers on the levels of user empowerment and capabilities, technological (re)design, transparency, governance and market restructuring to counter and resist this trend. Starting from the remit of the Communication Policy and Technology section, we invite submissions that take a closer look at these and related issues. In addition to our open call for papers, the CP&T section invites papers and panel proposals addressing the following particular themes that are relevant to the section, organised by a focus on governance, practices, and technology: 1 - Policy and governance - Governance and control through technological infrastructures and algorithms - Self- and co-regulation for privacy and trust in new media and ICT - Transparency of government and open data in the post-Wikileaks age - Big data, datamining, social sorting, and Internet governance - Civic/internet liberties in relation to hacktivism and peer-to-peer file sharing - Social, economic and legal issues related to (new) regulatory initiatives worldwide on privacy and data protection (e.g. Privacy Impact Assessments) - Social innovation opportunities and policy - Internet and communication systems: challenges for national and international communication policies (Theme for joint session with International Communication section) 2 - Practices - User (dis)empowerment and mediation - Tactics and strategies of resistance and protest in technology design and use - Multi-stakeholder approach in media literacy and digital literacy - Mediated forms of mutual cooperation outside of the capitalist regime of production and consumption - Reconfiguring trust and identity in virtual communities and user-generated content (DIY) - Privacy, surveillance and the commodification of personal data - Social and policy consequences of digital marketing techniques (e.g. behavioural targeting, social advertising) - Tensions between content producers (including users and ‘produsers’) and content distributors - Practices of end-user programming and implications for empowerment 3 - Technology - Construction of technology: privacy-by-design versus surveillance-by-design - Political economy of social media - Design and use of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PET) / Transparency Enhancing Technologies (TET) / Privacy Feedback and Awareness tools (PFA) - Changing policies, value networks and user practices in digital audio-visual systems - Creativity, transparency and control through autonomous systems and ubiquitous computing (RFID, sensors,...) - Privacy and surveillance through social, local and mobile marketing techniques (SoLoMo) - Linking (constructive) technology assessment (STS) with requirement engineering (computer science) - Technologies for data inference, profiling, and prediction of user behaviour The CP&T Section will look for opportunities for hosting joint sessions with other sections and/or working groups. Submission information The CP&T section welcomes proposals for papers bearing on the above or related issues by submitting an extended abstract (maximum 1,000 words). Abstracts should state the title, the methods or approach used, and briefly introduce the theoretical framework and empirical research on which the paper will be based. The scholarly presentation of accepted submissions can take place in several types of sessions: paper presentation sessions (i.e. 4-5 presenters each with 12-15 minutes, requiring full paper submitted on time) and high intensity sessions (i.e. 6-8 presenters each with 5-7 minutes). While, IAMCR accepts presentations and papers in English, French and Spanish, it is requested that extended abstracts and panel proposals, if at all possible, be submitted in English to facilitate the reviewing process. Proposals for panels are also welcome. A proposal should have four to five papers and should provide: (1) a panel title, (2) a framing text and (3) short abstracts for all the papers with paper titles and authors. The framing text (maximum 500 words) should contain the overall idea and goal of the panel, and how it responds to the CP&T section call. A panel chair and a discussant should also be proposed. The 500 word panel framing text and the individual paper abstracts need to be submitted separately, but please be sure to add the panel name to each of the individual paper abstracts! They will be reviewed and based on this review we will accept, accept with revisions, or decline the panel. Submission of extended abstracts, panel proposals and (if accepted) full papers can only be done online via IAMCR’s Open Conference System (OCS) at http://iamcr-ocs.org from 15 November 2012 to 28 January 2013 (midnight GMT). Submissions only sent via e-mail will not be reviewed. It is expected that, normally, only one abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors to a single IAMCR conference in general. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other IAMCR Sections or Working Groups for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System (OCS), by the Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference programme. The deadlines are: - January 28, 2013 (midnight GMT): Submission of extended abstracts and panels via OCS (submissions will be assessed by double blind review) - February 28, 2013: Announcement of acceptances - May 28, 2013: Full papers due via OCS (around 7,500 words, excluding notes and references). There is no second round of reviewing for acceptance. If a proposal is accepted, the presenter must also register for conference participation in order to be included in the final conference programme of the Section. A CP&T best paper award will be made to one of the paper presenters, based on the full papers submitted in time. Additional questions about the CP&T sessions (submission, themes, panels etc.) at the IAMCR 2013 conference can be addressed to Bart Cammaerts (b.cammaerts [AT] lse.ac.uk) and Jo Pierson (jo.pierson [AT] vub.ac.be). Fwd: CFP: Narrative Minds and Virtual Worlds; Tampere, Finland, May 21-22, 2013
by Frans Mäyrä 15 Jan '13

15 Jan '13

Please feel free to distribute: Call for Papers, abstract deadline January 31st, 2013 Narrative Minds and Virtual Worlds Tampere, Finland, May 21st and 22nd 2013 Keynote speakers: Marie-Laure Ryan (author of Possible Worlds, Artificial Intelligence and Narrative Theory [1991], Narrative as Virtual Reality [2001] and Avatars of Story [2006]; editor of Cyberspace Textuality [1999] and Narrative across Media [2004]) Jarmila Mildorf (author of Storying Domestic Violence [2007]; editor of Magic, Science, Technology, and Literature [2006] and Imaginary Dialogues in English [2011]) The postclassical turn in narratology has led to 1) a new emphasis on minds, both fictional and interpretative, and 2) the theoretical discovery of storyworlds. These ideas come together in cognitive-theoretically informed narratology, which is well on its way to getting to grips with the processes of immersion and readerly orientation within the storyworld, and also with perceptual positioning on the levels of storyworld, narration and the actual reading process. This conference discusses, applies and tests narratological theories of world and mind construction in different media, ranging from literature to digital games, classroom interaction and corporate communication. The conference calls for papers from any relevant field of study addressing interfaces of minds and worlds, narrative as well as virtual. Bringing together research on different narrative and quasi-narrative media will reveal both the medium-specific and the transmedial dynamics between inner and outer worlds in narrative sense-making. For instance, the narratological notions of fictional mind construction have lately been informed by theories of spatial and temporal situatedness and its effect on the reading process. The situation of game players immersed in a virtual world involves both interesting similarities with as well as differences to more prototypically narrative environments, particularly in its prioritisation of navigation and problem-solving over empathetic identification. Furthermore, the use of shared storyworlds as foundations for transmedial franchises suggests that worlds may, indeed, be translatable. This conference is inspired by interdisciplinary and transmedial studies of narrative as pursued by, among others, our keynote speakers Jarmila Mildorf and Marie-Laure Ryan. We welcome papers discussing general and theoretical issues, as well as papers focusing on particular texts or cases in any medium. Furthermore, papers may address medium-specificity or disciplinary boundaries as interpretative or methodological challenges. Possible topics include, but are not limited to o medial and intermedial construction of minds and worlds in literature and the everyday o adapting storyworlds from one medium to another o socially distributed minds in everyday conversation, narration and life stories o the role of fiction and narration in digital games o misreading virtual minds in fiction o fictional worlds in picture books and graphic novels o virtual worlds and fictional minds as tools for teaching o game worlds between real action and imaginary spaces o narrative and ludic agency in game playing o narrative, material and visual dimensions of organisational sense-making o "Theories of Mind" in different media o attributing minds and representing worlds in historical narratives o exceptional minds and bodies in fiction and the everyday o dream narratives as virtual worlds o narrative embodiment in illness narratives o the function of stories in marketing and brand development Please send a 250-word abstract to Mari Hatavara (mari.hatavara[at]uta.fi) by January 31st 2013. Looking for international mobile tech researchers
by Ryan S Eanes 15 Jan '13

15 Jan '13

Hi all, I'm in the process of developing my dissertation proposal, and while I have a specific interest in mobile technology (phones & tablets), I have two fairly disparate research interests: (a) The effects of mobile tech on various facets of interpersonal interactions (b) Practical applications of mobile tech in the hospitality industry I feel that I might benefit by incorporating an international and/or comparative angle to my dissertation, so I wanted to see if anyone out there on this list outside the USA is doing research work related to either of these topics. If so, and you're willing, I'd love to pick your brain, find out more about what you're studying, etc. Thanks in advance, AoIR-ers! New book - Technomobility in China
by Wallis, Cara 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Dear Colleagues, Please excuse the shameless self promotion but I wanted to announce the publication of my new book, Cara Wallis, _Technomobility in China: Young Migrant Women and Mobile Phones_ (New York: NYU Press, 2013) http://www.amazon.com/Technomobility-China-Critical-Cultural-Communication/… Please see below for a short abstract and table of contents. Best. Cara Wallis Assistant Professor Department of Communication Texas A&M University As unprecedented waves of young, rural women journey to cities in China, not only to work, but also to "see the world" and gain some autonomy, they regularly face significant institutional obstacles as well as deep-seated anti-rural prejudices. Based on immersive fieldwork, Cara Wallis provides an intimate portrait of the social, cultural, and economic implications of mobile communication for a group of young women engaged in unskilled service work in Beijing, where they live and work for indefinite periods of time. While simultaneously situating her work within the fields of feminist studies, technology studies, and communication theory, Wallis explores the way in which the cell phone has been integrated into the transforming social structures and practices of contemporary China, and the ways in which mobile technology enables rural young women—a population that has been traditionally marginalized and deemed as "backward" and "other"—to participate in and create culture, allowing them to perform a modern, rural-urban identity. In this theoretically rich and empirically grounded analysis, Wallis provides original insight into the co-construction of technology and subjectivity as well as the multiple forces that shape contemporary China.

Table of Contents Introduction: Mobile Bodies, Mobile Technologies, and Immobile Mobility Ch. 2 Market Reforms, Global Linkages, and (Dis)continuity in Post-Socialist China Ch. 3 “My First Big Urban Purchase”: Mobile Technologies and Modern Subjectivity Ch. 4 Navigating Mobile Networks of Sociality and Intimacy Ch. 5 Picturing Self, Imagining the World Ch. 6 Mobile Communication and Labor Politics Conclusion: The Mobile Assemblage and Social Change in China

Dear Fellow colleagues I am currently studying how historians and museums incorporate social media into historical research. I wanted to reach out to the community to help me identify some social history projects that have a strong component social media component in it. I also wanted to get in touch with scholars who are working on such projects. Best Dr. Ratan Suri Department of Telecommunications Indiana University, Bloomington.
