Social Networks - Gun Background Checks?
by Andrew Levin 19 Jan '13

19 Jan '13

Hi all, As a Chicagoan, it's very rare that even a week goes by during which this city is not home to multiple gun-related homicides. So, it is with some relief that I see President Obama fighting for universal background checks in order to buy a gun. As I read more on the subject of background checks, I started to realize that the devil might be in the details. The term in America "going postal" refers to cases when ordinary citizens just go crazy and shoot people. These checks would not prevent these individuals. Now, I do wonder about social media. Could this be an application of big data - with lots of refinement, could a few remarks on Facebook trigger a response before tragedy? Has there been any research into combing social network data to prevent these sorts of individuals or alternatively are there any programs for anti-terrorism that might be converted? Avid reader, first time writer. Thank you, Professor Andrew Levin, MS Harper College

CFP - Protest and the Media - 12-13 June, University of Westminster
by Anastasia Kavada 18 Jan '13

18 Jan '13

CALL FOR PAPERS Protest and the Media Date: 12 and 13 June 2013 Venue: University of Westminster, 35 Marylebone Road, London, NW1 5LS The 5th Annual Conference of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University Westminster, held in association with the British Journalism Review, will focus on 'Protest Movements, Free Speech and the Media'. Confirmed speakers include: - W. Lance Bennett, Professor of Political Science, Ruddick C. Lawrence Professor of Communication, and Director of the Center for Communication and Civic Engagement, University of Washington - Nick Couldry, Professor of Media and Communications and Director of the Goldsmiths Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy, Goldsmiths College The recent wave of protests sweeping both authoritarian regimes and Western liberal democracies has highlighted the close interconnections between media and protest, particularly in times of economic hardship. New forms of social media can disrupt constraints placed on traditional sources of information and public debate, whether through state intervention or monopolistic private ownership, and in theory provide platforms for a multiplicity of voices. Going beyond the hype surrounding 'Twitter' or 'Facebook' revolutions, this year's conference will look at the role of media in representing and promoting protest and dissent. It will explore how contemporary media can shape practices of organizing, decision-making and mobilisation, change the focus of public debate, and influence the structure of protest movements and their capacity for social and political change. Our focus is not confined solely to recent protests or to new media. Instead, we aim to situate current movements such as Occupy or the movements of the Arab Spring within broader trajectories of protest with papers examining the role of media in past mobilizations. We also seek to investigate the plurality of media used in protest, both new and old, mainstream and alternative, digital, analogue and paper-based. We welcome a variety of approaches and topics which may include, but are not limited to, the following: · Media representations of protest · Media surveillance, censorship and repression of dissent · Media and the global diffusion of protest · The interaction between alternative/ citizen journalism and mainstream media · The interface between protest movements and journalists · The role of mediated communication in the organizing and decision-making practices of protest movements · Protest movements and their use of the media to appeal to the state · Comparisons between the role of the media in current and past protest movements · The impact of the media on protest movements' capacity for social and political change PROGRAMME AND REGISTRATION The conference will take place on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 June 2013. The fee for registration will be £195 with a concessionary rate of £99 for students, to cover all conference documentation, refreshments, lunches, wine reception and administration costs. Registration will open in March 2013. DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS The deadline for abstracts is Monday 4 February 2013. Successful applicants will be notified by Monday 18 February 2013. New study on sociability and ICTs
by Taipale Sakari 17 Jan '13

17 Jan '13

Dear Air-L mailing members; This new article authored by Leopoldina Fortunati, Federico de Luca, and I, might be of interest to some of AoIR list members: Fortunati, Leopoldina, Taipale, Sakari & de Luca, Federico (2013) What happened to body-to-body sociability? Social Science Research, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ssresearch.2012.12.006 It is dealing with a vividly discussed issue of whether ICTs affect people's sociability. We use a large two-wave survey data collected from EU5 countries in 1996 and 2009 to show how sociability has evolved over time and how this change is associated with ICTs. With best wishes, Dr Sakari Taipale Adjunct Professor Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Social and Public Policy) Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy Street address: Ylistönmäentie 33 Room: 459b PO Box 35 40014 University of Jyväskylä, Finland Mobile (work) +358 400 728 852 https://staff.jyu.fi/Members/saktaipa

FW: Symposium on Media City, May 15-17 2013, Helsinki
by Tero Karppi 17 Jan '13

17 Jan '13

-------- Original Message -------- CALL FOR PAPERS The Spectacular/Ordinary/Contested Media City May 15–-17, 2013 Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland In contemporary cities, the effects of advanced telecommunications and commodified media exist everywhere around us. In both eye-catching and oblique ways, mass and personalised media forms reshape our spatial practices and perceptions of specific milieus and the city as a whole. We invite presentations that deal particularly with the following issues: • role of media and surveillance technologies in the spectacularisation of urban public spaces and events • the ways in which media technologies and representations become part of the taken-for-granted perceptions and routinised practices and rhythms of urban life • the actual and potential contributions of mass and personalised media forms to the contestation of economic, political and cultural hegemonies in cities Throughout the interdisciplinary symposium, the spectacular, ordinary and contested aspects of the media city will be brainstormed through questions such as: What is the relationship of materiality of media and symbolic media representations in the construction of densely digitalised urban milieus? To what extent and how is media-saturation steering people’s urban activities towards automated and un-reflected modes? Or do the “urban media affordances” open room for creative place-making practices, new amalgamations of technology and corporeality, and even chances for alternative decoding and political resistance? In which ways do different forms of art and popular culture (cinema, literature, theatre, digital games etc.) articulate and intervene in the media city? What ethical and political issues lurk behind the pecuniary motifs of the ongoing mediatisation of space? Invited keynote speakers: • Anne Cronin, Lancaster University, UK • Stephen Graham, Newcastle University, UK • Scott McQuire, Melbourne University, Australia • Shannon Mattern, The New School, USA If you would like to present a paper at the Spectacular/Ordinary/Contested Media City symposium, please send an abstract (max. 300 words) to mediacity-2013(a)helsinki.fi by 24 January 2013. A narrative bio (max. 100 words) describing the author’s background and research interests should also accompany the proposal.
