CFP: CHI 2013 Workshop "Designing Gamification"
by Sebastian Deterding 04 Dec '12

04 Dec '12

## CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ## ## CHI 2013 Workshop Designing Gamification: ## ## Creating Gameful and Playful Experiences ## In recent years, gamification – the use of game design elements in non-game contexts – has seen rapid adoption in domains such as education, work, self-management, health and well-being, sustainability, or civic participation. In parallel, a growing body of research has studied its uses and effects, as well as the evaluation of game user experience in general. Yet little is known about the effective designing of gameful systems. This one-day workshop therefore convenes HCI, games, and design researchers as well as industry practitioners to take stock of current design practices and approaches to gameful systems, chart challenges, issues, and best practices, and identify key opportunities and questions for future research. You will also get to pop balloons. # Topics of Special Interest # * Postmortems, lessons learned, recurrent challenges and issues encountered in the design of gameful systems * Design models, principles, methods, tools, and evaluation methods adapted from interaction and game design * General and domain-specific constraints, opportunities, facilitating and success-critical conditions of gamification # Submission Information # We invite interested participants to submit a 3-4 page position paper in the CHI extended abstract format to Sebastian Deterding at chi2013(a)gamification-research.org. Researchers and practitioners with first-hand experience in designing a gameful system may alternatively submit a slide deck outlining their experience. For further information, see the workshop site http://gamification-research.org/chi2013. Papers and slide decks will undergo a peer-jury process and 15-20 will be selected, with preference to submissions based on actual design experience. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the workshop and for one or more days of the conference. # Important Dates # * Submission Deadline: January 11, 2013 * Notification of Acceptance: February 8, 2013 * Workshop: April 28, 2013

CCA 2013 Open Panel: Newness and Emergence in Digital Media / NEW DEADLINE: DEC 10
by Guillaume Latzko-Toth 04 Dec '12

04 Dec '12

***** Please note that the extended deadline for paper proposals is December 10, 2012*** Newness and Emergence in Digital Media : Theoretical, Epistemological, and Methodological Considerations During the last two decades, the volume of scholarship on ³new technologies² and ³new media² has exploded. This is reflected at the institutional level by the introduction of specific courses and programs, dedicated journals, research chairs and so on. Also well established, if perhaps less common, are the notions of emerging technology and emerging media, which seem to be interchangeable with the former and which designate what corresponds, most of the time, to networked digital technologies. The terms are intended to distinguish these communication technologies from older ones, namely ³analog² electronic media, while avoiding the radical tone of discourses on their ³revolutionary² nature. Now that the ³digital turn² seems mostly complete its concrete forms showing signs of stabilization one can ponder the relevance of maintaining in scholarly literature such phrases as ³digital media², ³new media² and ³emerging media². Are they still productive in the sense of guiding and focusing a collective reflection that sheds light on contemporary communication phenomena? Conversely, the question of newness and related issues have always been at the heart of communication and media studies (Gitelman, 2006; Park, Jankowski & Jones, 2011). The same remark could be made about the notion of emerging media. Beyond specific objects, it seems to refer to an epistemological stance that favours the study of media technologies at a particular moment of their existence, that is, ³at nascent stage². This is particularly clear in the field of Internet Studies, where every two or three years a new ³trendy² device captures the attention of researchers. One wonders if that perpetual motion of renewal is not related, to a certain extent, to the very essence of digital media, or what Zittrain (2008) calls their generativity. The objective of this panel is to develop this reflection, by bringing together theoretical and epistemological insights on the category of ³emerging media² and its links with the digital. It also seeks to foster a discussion on methodological consequences (at the analytical level as well as at the level of methods of inquiry) resulting from the choice to focus on the new and the emerging in the field of mediated communication. The panel will be part of the Technology and Emerging Media (TEM) track of the Canadian Communication Association (CCA) conference to be held on June 5-7, 2013 in Victoria, BC, and will accomodate up to 8 papers. If you are interested in presenting a paper in this panel, please 1) submit your abstract through the conference submission system by December 10th, 2012 (http://ocs.sfu.ca/fedcan/index.php/cca2013/cca2013 ) ; note that you have to click on "LOG IN" to access the submission form or create an account in the system) 2) THEN send us a note saying that you would like your paper to be included in the panel on Newness and Emergence in Digital Media¹. Please send this note with you abstract to both following addresses : guillaume.latzko-toth(a)com.ulaval.ca, millerand.florence(a)uqam.ca. Please note that the papers will be peer-reviewed just like any other submission to the TEM track. Feel free to contact us at the e-mail addresses provided above if you have any question or would like further details. 04 Dec '12

***** Please note that the extended deadline for paper and panel proposals is December 10, 2012***** * CCA 2013 Annual meeting: Call for papers on the theme "Technology and Emerging Media" * Spurred by the success of last year¹s call, we once again invite you to submit a paper to the Technology and Emerging Media track at the next Canadian Communication Association Conference that will take place in Victoria, British Columbia from June 5 to 7, 2013. While the first "TEM Proceedings" are about to be published, we also invite you to consider submitting a short paper (2500-3000 words) relating to the presentation you plan to do in the TEM track next June. Detailed guidelines will be posted on the proceedings website and e-mailed later on. The "Technology and Emerging Media" track covers works on research objects or problematics which address the following topics: - Information and communication technologies, notably from the points of view of their design, diffusion, and uses; - Digital media and related social phenomena; - Issues related to recent technological developments in the field of communication: social media/social Web, mobile media, online games, and new diffusion platforms for traditional media. Encouraged by the positive response we received to the idea of establishing a formal interest group on this theme within CCA, we would like to go ahead with this project. A 2nd meeting will be held during the conference. This time we will discuss the goals, structure and activities of the future interest group, the creation of which will be formally submitted to CCA Annual General Meeting. Fwd: CfP - CHI 2013 Workshop on Repair in HCI
by Daniela Rosner 04 Dec '12

04 Dec '12

Call for participation (Apologies for cross-posts) Reclaiming Repair Maintenance and Mending as Methods for Design Workshop at CHI 2013, Paris, France, April 28, 2013 http://reclaimingrepair.wordpress.com/ Key dates: Submission deadline: January 11, 2013 Acceptance notification: February 8, 2013 Workshop day: Sunday, April 28, 2013 Errors, omissions, and failures underlie almost everything we do. Our cell phones inevitably break, our software becomes outdated, and our appliances degrade. In response, we fix and maintain what we already have; we upgrade our software and replace broken parts, often in creative and imaginative ways. For example, the work of repairing mobile handsets may enable survival, sustenance, and social mobility, and the repair of alarm clocks and desk lamps may spur creative reinvention and reuse. Still, breakage and repair tend to be overlooked as important sources of technology design and innovation. This workshop considers what the field can learn from, and contribute to an engagement with repair practices. Our investigation will advance and inform HCI design methods and approaches to studying, and developing tools to support repair activity. The workshop will also provide a forum for participants and organizers to develop a shared language around issues of breakdown, maintenance, and repair. We thus hope to acquire a deeper understanding of what repair activities make possible — both for sustainable design and creative invention. We request that participants submit a one-page thought piece to reclaimingrepair(a)gmail.com by January 11, 2013 that describes their work in relation to repair and HCI. This could take the form of an argument, a portfolio, or an analytic intervention. Submissions will be accepted based on originality, quality, and how well they represent disciplinary and geographic range. Authors of accepted submissions will be asked to bring a broken technology to the workshop. Submissions from outside the HCI community will be particularly welcome (e.g., information studies, archaeology, anthropology, history, philosophy, or the arts). For any questions, contact reclaimingrepair(a)gmail.com We look forward to your contribution! Workshop organizers: Steven J. Microsoft Research Social Media Collective 2013 Summer Internships
by danah boyd 04 Dec '12

04 Dec '12

(Please forward this to any PhD student who you think might be interested!) APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 30, 2013 Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for PhD interns to join the Social Media Collective for Summer 2013. For these positions, we are looking primarily for social science PhD students (including communication, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information studies, etc.). The Social Media Collective is a collection of scholars at MSRNE who focus on socio-technical questions, primarily from a social science perspective. We are not an applied program; rather, we work on critical research questions that are important to the future of social science scholarship. MSRNE internships are 12-week paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns are expected to be on-site for the duration of their internship. PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project during their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a publishable scholarly paper for an academic journal or conference of the intern’s choosing. The goal of the internship is to help the intern advance their own career; interns are strongly encouraged to work towards a publication outcome that will help them on the academic job market. Interns are also expected to collaborate with full-time researchers and visitors, give short presentations, and contribute to the life of the community. While this is not an applied program, MSRNE encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with computer scientists, economists, and mathematicians. There are also opportunities to engage with product groups at Microsoft, although this is not a requirement. We are looking for applicants to focus their proposals on one of the following eights areas: 1) Big data, the politics of algorithms, and/or computational culture 2) Entertainment and news industries and audiences 3) Digital inequalities 4) Mobile media and social movement/civic engagement 5) Affective, immaterial, and other theoretical frameworks related to digital labor 6) Urban informatics and critical geography 7) Personal relationships and digital media 8) Critical accounts of crisis informatics and disasters Applicants should have advanced to candidacy in their PhD program by the time they start their internship. (Unfortunately, there are no opportunities for Master’s students or early PhD students at this time.) While this internship opportunity is not strictly limited to social scientists, preference will be given to social scientists and humanists making socio-technical inquiries. (Note: While other branches of Microsoft Research focus primarily on traditional computer science research, this group does no development-driven research and is not looking for people who are focused solely on building systems. We welcome social scientists with technical skills and strongly encourage social scientists to collaborate with computer scientists at MSRNE.) Preference will be given to intern candidates who work to make public and/or policy interventions with their research. Interns will benefit most from this opportunity if there are natural opportunities for collaboration with other researchers or visitors currently working at MSRNE. Applicants from universities outside of the United States are welcome to apply. PEOPLE AT MSRNE SOCIAL MEDIA COLLECTIVE The Social Media Collective is comprised of researchers, postdocs, and visitors. This includes: - Principal Researcher Nancy Baym (http://www.nancybaym.com/) - Senior Researcher danah boyd (http://www.danah.org) - Principal Researcher Kate Crawford (http://www.katecrawford.net/) - Senior Researcher Mary L. Gray (http://marylgray.org/) - Postdoctoral Researcher Megan Finn (http://people.ischool.berkeley.edu/~megfinn/) Previous interns in the collective have included Amelia Abreu (UWashington, information), Jed Brubaker (UC-Irvine, informatics), Scott Golder (Cornell, sociology), Germaine Halegoua (U. Wisconsin, communications), Airi Lampinen (HIIT, information), Jessica Lingel (Rutgers, library & info science), Alice Marwick (NYU, media culture communication), Laura Noren (NYU, sociology), Jaroslav Svelch (Charles University, media studies), Shawn Walker (UWashington, information), Omar Wasow (Harvard, African-American studies), and Sarita Yardi (GeorgiaTech, HCI). If you are curious to know more about MSRNE, I suspect that many former interns would be happy to tell you about their experiences here. Previous interns are especially knowledgeable about how this process works. For more information about the Social Media Collective, visit our blog: http://socialmediacollective.org/ APPLICATION PROCESS To apply for a PhD internship with the social media collective: 1. Fill out the online application form: <a href="https://research.microsoft.com/apps/tools/jobs/intern.aspx">https://research.microsoft.com/apps/tools/jobs/intern.aspx</a> Make sure to indicate that you prefer Microsoft Research New England and "social media" or "social computing." You will need to list two recommenders through this form. Make sure your recommenders respond to the request for letters so that their letters are also submitted by the deadline. 2. Send an email to msrnejob -at- microsoft-dot-com with the subject "SMC PhD Intern Application: <your name>" that includes the following four things: a. A brief description of your dissertation project. b. An academic article you have written (published or unpublished) that shows your writing skills. c. A copy of your CV. d. A pointer to your website or other online presence (if available). e. A short description of 1-2 projects that you propose to do while an intern at MSRNE, independently and/or in collaboration with current SMC researchers. This project must be distinct from the research for your dissertation. We will begin considering internship applications on January 30 and will not consider late applications. PREVIOUS INTERN TESTIMONIALS "The internship at Microsoft Research was all of the things I wanted it to be - personally productive, intellectually rich, quiet enough to focus, noisy enough to avoid complete hermit-like cave dwelling behavior, and full of opportunities to begin ongoing professional relationships with other scholars who I might not have run into elsewhere." -- Laura Noren, Sociology, New York University "If I could design my own graduate school experience, it would feel a lot like my summer at Microsoft Research. I had the chance to undertake a project that I'd wanted to do for a long time, surrounded by really supportive and engaging thinkers who could provide guidance on things to read and concepts to consider, but who could also provoke interesting questions on the ethics of ethnographic work or the complexities of building an identity as a social sciences researcher. Overall, it was a terrific experience for me as a researcher as well as a thinker." -- Jessica Lingel, Library and Information Science, Rutgers University "Spending the summer as an intern at MSR was an extremely rewarding learning experience. Having the opportunity to develop and work on your own projects as well as collaborate and workshop ideas with prestigious and extremely talented researchers was invaluable. It was amazing how all of the members of the Social Media Collective came together to create this motivating environment that was open, supportive, and collaborative. Being able to observe how renowned researchers streamline ideas, develop projects, conduct research, and manage the writing process was a uniquely helpful experience – and not only being able to observe and ask questions, but to contribute to some of these stages was amazing and unexpected." -- Germaine Halegoua, Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin-Madison "The summer I spent at Microsoft Research was one of the highlights of my time in grad school. It helped me expand my research in new directions and connect with world-class scholars. As someone with a technical bent, this internship was an amazing opportunity to meet and learn from really smart humanities and social science researchers. Finally, Microsoft Research as an organization has the best of both worlds: the academic freedom and intellectual stimulation of a university with the perks of industry." -- Andrés Monroy-Hernández, Media, Arts and Sciences, MIT
