Fwd: CHI Post-Sustainability Workshop
by Caroline Haythornthwaite 03 Dec '12

03 Dec '12

FYI. /Caroline > ================================================== > Post-Sustainability > > Workshop at the ACM CHI 2013 Conference > April 27/28, Paris, France. > > SUBMISSION DEADLINE: January 11, 2013 > > Further details at: http://sympact.cs.bris.ac.uk/post-sustainability/ > > ================================================== > > The CHI sustainability community will be hosting a workshop on 'Post-Sustainability' as part of CHI 2013: Changing Perspectives, the annual ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Paris, France (27 April - 2 May 2013). The workshop will be held on a single day prior to the start of the main conference, either on the 27 or 28 April 2013. > > The purpose of this workshop is to raise awareness, spark discussion and evolve a research agenda in HCI about how to move sustainable HCI to the next level - one that goes beyond persuasion, adopts a deeper perspective on sustainability, and supports and prepares for transformations induced by large scale social and environmental change. > > Call for Position Papers - Key Dates: > > • Submission by: January 11th, 2013 > > • Notification of Acceptance: February 8th, 2013 > > • Workshop days: April 27th or April 28th, 2013 > > Themes to be considered by the workshop include; > > Thinking about the Future: Can HCI help people - both those with specific roles such as policymakers, business strategists and community leaders, and the wider public - think about how the future might play out in away which engages and encourages action rather than pessimism. Such work might include visualisation of future scenarios, interactive exploration of alternatives, etc. > > Adaptation: Preparing for likely changes: It is known that climate change will, and is already, changing environments in ways which impact communities:increased drought in some areas, flooding in others, future rising of sea levels. Communities not used to facing these challenges will need to, and advance preparation will make it easier: for example, altering crop planting patterns or community 'flood preparedness' training and resources. Similarly, the Transition Towns movement argues we should wean ourselves off petroleum. How can HCI help engage people with these issues in advance, rather than waiting till circumstance forces them? > > Resilience: Building Cohesive Communities: Stronger local communities are more resilient to change and shocks; people are able to act together collectively in response to challenges, and strongly affected individuals are more likely to find support. Can online social media, mobile devices etc be used in such a way as to build more cohesive local communities? Can they help create support networks that exist beyond the virtual? Or do they naturally result in reduced cohesion? > > IT in a Resource Constrained World: If we move to a strongly resource-constrained or post-collapse world, what will the role of IT (if any) be in this? Can we imagine datacenters, cloud, and ubiquitous devices globally, even in a resource-constrained (but not collapsed) world? How can IT be designed for a post collapse world? And what are the consequences of this for UI and HCI design? > > SUBMISSIONS > > We invite the submission of 4-6 page position papers in ACM Extended Abstract format (http://chi2013.acm.org/authors/format) offering perspectives on one or more of the above topics. We also ask all submitting authors to provide a 100-150 word bio about their background and their reasons for wanting to participate in the workshop. This will be published online. > > Please note that attendees at the workshop are expected to attend at least one day of the main CHI conference. > > Submissions should be made by email to chris.preist(a)cs.bris.ac.uk by Jan 11, 2013. > > Key Dates: > > • Submission by: January 11th, 2013 > > • Notification of Acceptance: February 8th, 2013 > > • Workshop days: April 27th or April 28th, 2013 > > ORGANISERS > Chris Preist - Dept of Computer Science, University of Bristol, UK. > Samuel Mann - School of Information Technology, Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin, NZ. > Lisa Nathan - School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, CA. > Daniela Busse - Samsung R&D, San Jose, USA. > >

CFP- Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on ONLINE SECURITY AND CIVIL RIGHTS
by Mariariosaria Taddeo 03 Dec '12

03 Dec '12

Apologies for cross-posting Call for Papers for Philosophy and Technology’s special issue on ONLINE SECURITY AND CIVIL RIGHTS GUEST EDITOR Mariarosaria Taddeo INTRODUCTION Online insecurity is like a Hydra with many heads - from e-commerce and online banking scams to malware, from hacking to cyberwar. It requires Herculean efforts to slay the Hydra, but, unfortunately, fighting insecurity may easily cause serious ethical problems, since security measures can also undermine civil rights, such as individual liberty, privacy, and freedom of speech and expression, because such measures often rest on the collection, storage, access, or elaboration of individuals’ personal information. Clearly, any democratic government, fair society and responsible organisation need to identify an ethical balance between online security and civil rights, in order to implement the former successfully while respecting and furthering the latter. At the same time, it is also clear that the problem is growing and becoming increasingly pressing. Nowadays, when the US and several EU countries are debating which rights should be protected on the Internet and how extended online security measures should be, ethical guidelines for the management of cyber security are urgently sought. Following the organization of the international workshop on Online Security and Civil Rights: A Fine Ethical Balance (http://www.informationethics.net/CRCSworkshop/Home.html) to be held on October 26-27, 2012 at the University of Hertfordshire with the support of the University of Hertfordshire, the UNESCO Chair in Information and Computer Ethics, and Google’s Public Policy Department, a special issue of Springer’s Philosophy & Technology is planned (http://www.springer.com/13347) TOPICS We solicit the submission of philosophically-oriented papers that investigate topics such as the balance between civil rights and cyber security; the rights that citizens of democratic countries should claim for themselves when using the Internet; and the need to establish new individual rights pertaining to the digital sphere. Areas of relevance include information and computer ethics, (philosophy of) law, political sciences, human rights, Internet studies, cyber security, philosophy of technology, and STS. TIMETABLE January 1, 2013: Deadline papers submissions March 1, 2013: Deadline reviews papers May 1, 2013: Deadline revised papers 2013: Publication of the special issue SUBMISSION DETAILS To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should go to the journal’s Editorial Manager http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/ The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM. The author must then select as article type: "SI on Online Security and Civil Rights” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editors. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure: New Submission => Journal Editorial Office => Guest Editor(s) => Reviewers => Reviewers’ Recommendations => Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation => Editor-in-Chief’s Final Decision => Author Notification of the Decision. The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions. Encouraged by the positive response wereceived to the idea of establishing a formal interest group on this theme within CCA, we would like to go ahead with this project. A 2nd meeting will be held during the conference. This time we will discuss the goals, structure and activities of the future interest group, the creation of which will be formally submitted to CCA Annual General Meeting. Furthermore, we experiment for the first time the "open panel" formula, by inviting you to submit proposals on the theme "Newness and Emergence in Digital Media: Theoretical, Epistemological, and Methodological Considerations"(see the call for papers posted separately). REMINDER: Deadline for submitting proposals to CCA conference is: December 1st, 2012. Facebook-Discrepancy between real and shown number of photos/albums
by Eftekhar-Khansari, Azar 01 Dec '12

01 Dec '12

Hello everyone, In Facebook, if you check your friend's number of photos or albums you will realize the number which is show by Facebook differ from what you can count or is visible to you. From Facebook help and other guides I found the 2 possibilities below. 1. About uploaded photos by your friend: Your friend has limited the audience who can view particular photos or videos. 2. About tagged photos: * Either your friend or your friends of friend limited the audience. * The friend, who had tagged your friend in a photo, now has inactive account. I also think, Facebook counts Deleted albums and includes them in the number it displays on your profile. Even in my own profile I can see this discrepancy between the real number of albums I have and the number Facebook displays. What do you think? Any idea please... Best wishes Azar PhD student of Cyberpsychology -- Scanned by iCritical.

Fwd: [geoweb-r] Next #geowebchat: The Geoweb and the Internet Off Switch
by Alan McConchie 30 Nov '12

Dear Air-Listers. On Tuesday our regular internet geography twitter chat will be discussing the recent internet blackout in Syria. Although most of the participants in this chat tend to be geographers, we welcome anyone interested in internet research. Please forward this info to anyone else who might be interested. For more details about #geowebchat, go here: http://mappingmashups.net/geowebchat Thanks, Alan McConchie PhD Candidate Department of Geography University of British Columbia Begin forwarded message: > From: Johnathan Rush <rush16(a)gmail.com> > Subject: [geoweb-r] Next #geowebchat: The Geoweb and the Internet Off Switch > Date: November 30, 2012 10:41:50 AM PST > To: geoweb-r(a)googlegroups.com > Reply-To: geoweb-r(a)googlegroups.com > > The Internet has gone dark in Syria, and it's not the first time that a regime has limited or eliminated access to the Internet. In Syria, the outage is likely intended to limit the ability of rebels to communicate and for dissent to foment. We saw both total Internet outages and targeted outages of social media in Libya and Egypt last year as well. State-curtailed Internet access is hardly limited to conflict zones, however, and China's censorship of particular issues and websites are frequently covered and speculated upon. > > What does all this mean for the geoweb? How are rebels and protesters affected by a loss of access to the geoweb, and how does their loss of access affect outsiders' knowledge of their conflict? Join the #geowebchat on Tuesday 12/4 for a discussion of what happens to the geoweb when the state hits the "off" switch. If you've got an Internet connection, join us on Twitter at 12pm PST / 3pm EST / 8pm GMT. @rushgeo will be your guest host this week. > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "geoweb-r" group. > To post to this group, send email to geoweb-r(a)googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to geoweb-r+unsubscribe(a)googlegroups.com. > To view this discussion on the web visit https://groups.google.com/d/msg/geoweb-r/-/7sZpzHNoYNUJ. > For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/groups/opt_out. > >

10 days left to submit an abstract! Twitter and Microblogging conference, Lancaster University, 10-12 April 2013

Call for papers: Twitter and Microblogging: Political, Professional and Personal Practices<http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/twitter_and_microblogging/> Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK, 10 - 12 April 2013 Submission deadline: 10th December 2012!! Twitter and other micro-blogging platforms, with their short messages, in some cases circulated to millions of followers, were at first viewed with condescension and amusement: famously David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, opined, "Too many tweets make a twat." Other media initially treated Twitter as offering platforms for celebrities, pools of banality, streams of dumbed-down opinions. But people using Twitter quickly found an enormous range of diverse uses, revelling in opportunities for creativity that microblogging and associated applications offered. People involved Twitter in organising revolutions, disseminating scientific findings, promoting brands, communicating with friends and crafting new forms of artistic endeavours and communications. Where Twitter is not allowed, as in China, other microblogging platforms have taken on similar functions. This conference brings together a range of researchers doing detailed analyses of the discourse, practices, and social interactions of microblogging communities. Plenary speakers include: Janet Jones, University of the West of England Nathan Jurgenson, University of Maryland Greg Myers, Lancaster University Ruth Page, University of Leicester Lee Salter, University of the West of England Contributions are sought in a variety of formats.
