The network has already participants from quite some European countries. There are however a few countries that are eligible to participate, but from which we do not-yet have management committee members. Model-driven engineering approaches provide considerable advantages to software systems engineering activities through the provision of consistent and coherent models at different abstraction levels. As these models are in a machine readable form, model-driven engineering approaches can also support the exploitation of computing capabilities for model reuse, programming code generation, and model checking, for example. The definition of a simulation model, its software implementation and its execution platform form what is known as simulation engineering. As simulation systems are mainly based on software, these systems can similarly benefit from model-driven approaches to support automatic software generation, enhance software quality, and reduce costs, development effort and time-to-market. Similarly to systems and software engineering, simulation engineering can exploit the capabilities of model-driven approaches by increasing the abstraction level in simulation model specifications and by automating the derivation of simulator code. Further advantages can be gained by using modeling languages, such as UML and SysML – but not exclusively those. For example, modeling languages can be used for descriptive modeling (to describe the system to be simulated), for analytical modeling (to specify analytically the simulation of the same system), and for implementation modeling (to define the respective simulator). In “Coding Places,” Yuri Takhteyev looks at the work of software developers who inhabit two contexts: a geographical area—in this case, greater Rio de Janeiro—and a “world of practice,” a global system of activities linked by shared meanings and joint practice. The work of the Brazilian developers, Takhteyev discovers, reveals a paradox of the world of software: it is both diffuse and sharply centralized. The world of software revolves around a handful of places—in particular, the San Francisco Bay area—that exercise substantial control over both the material and cultural elements of software production. Takhteyev shows how in this context Brazilian software developers work to find their place in the world of software and to bring its benefits to their city. Takhteyev’s study closely examines Lua, an open source programming language developed in Rio but used in such internationally popular products as World of Warcraft and Angry Birds. He shows that Lua had to be separated from its local origins on the periphery in order to achieve success abroad. The developers, Portuguese speakers, used English in much of their work on Lua. By bringing to light the work that peripheral practitioners must do to give software its seeming universality, Takhteyev offers a revealing perspective on the not-so-flat world of globalization. Hi Peter You might want to suggest that your friend check out the offerings at Penn State in the College of Information Sciences & Technology (ist.psu.edu) The IST department has a lot of training, expertise and research happening in your friend's areas of interest. Penn State has a HUGE online component to the university, called the World Campus, and IST offers an award-winning cyber-security Masters through the World Campus. Looking for MA or Ph.D. online program in Canada in ethics or privacy security or sociology legal studies

Any suggestions and or advice welcome. I was talking to an AoIR professor Matthew Allen in Australia about completing a Ph.D. online in policy legal computer ethics questions, yet the costs for a foreign student stopped me. I know Queens at Kingston Ontario do research in privacy but they are about a two hour train ride away. I would hope to do the bulk of the work online with a Canadian school, so I can afford it. I have strong quantitative modeling skills and a background in reading many AoIR scholars and also more law cases in everything information age from hacking to domain name disputes to more interdisciplinary legal online issues. I have a high honours BA in legal studies and a general B.Math in statistics and work professionally managing national business statistics projects. I also have a few deep involvements in a variety of community based volunteer services such as in consumers of psychiatry and peer support and service provision to victims of crime and tragic circumstances. I can arrange for some time away from work if needed. I have also completed course work for a certificate in systems sciences from the University of Ottawa in an MSc program but did not finish the thesis.
