(in french, soon to be translated), players act as stakeholder of a personal data market (developed by constant vzw of brussels) http://yoogle.be/ finally, over the last two years, we developed a workshop to discuss anonymity as a strategy on the internet e.g., also as a "privacy tool"). as part of the workshop, we have a role-play game in which the course participants act out anonymous communications protocols. the game inevitably gets people into hacking the system to conceal their communications. at one session last year at the piet zwart design school, the "observers" started denial of service attacks on the proxy by constantly calling out the person's name loudly. i guess it helped that they had a whole session on "protocols" (in their general sense, e.g., greetings, job interviews, dinners, as well well tcp/ip, http) the week before. the workshop invites participants to think of privacy and anonymity abstractly, but also technically; as well as the interaction of the two with politics of technology. from past experience, i find that privacy remains a very difficult concept to "teach", unless you take a very specific (and limited) definition. i find it especially challenging to think through matters which we don't know about ourselves, e.g., how tracking and profiling work and reconfigure our lives. and, maybe most importantly, how do you raise awareness without making the participants feel paranoid or helpless? how do you teach kids without becoming moralistic? i guess playfulness and even awkwardness are interesting ways of exploring our new privacy and this in itself is an interesting line of research. please do keep us posted on the other responses you get, as it is one of the strands of research in our current project on privacy in online social networks. best, s. > From: geruzko(a)gmail.com > To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org > Subject: [Air-L] Teaching privacy Dear AoIRists Sorry for cross postings. Many thanks Larissa *Two 3-year PhD Scholarships available at RMIT University:* * * *A. 3-year PhD Scholarship: Mobile game development for young people’s emotional wellbeing (Games of Being Social)* School of Media and Communication, RMIT University Australia This three-year scholarship is for a PhD candidate who will contribute to the fieldwork for a participatory design/ethnographic study of mobile gaming and design with young people. The candidate will also conduct literature reviews around mobile media, gaming and young people for the Young And Well Cooperative Research Centre (YAWCRC). S/he will spend at least 12 months over the three years of candidature documenting, archiving and analysing mobile gaming practices contributing to a study of mobile game development for young people’s emotional wellbeing. As a discrete case study, the PhD candidate will participate in and contribute to a recently funded Young and Well CRC Project “Technologies for Supportive Communities”. Comparative literature on bulletin board systems (BBS)

Hi everyone, I'm currently working with Gerard Goggin at the University of Sydney on a study of Bulletin Board Systems and their place in the cultural history of the Australian internet. The study will include oral histories by former (and current) participants in BBS. However we're hoping to include some comparative data and analysis on BBS use in other countries, particularly in Asia. This would include analyses of how BBS are understood in broader culture and media, as well as ethnographic studies and oral histories of BBS use. We're particularly interested in research on BBS from China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea, but other studies would also be very welcome and useful! If anyone has any suggestions of literature on BBS, please let me know. Older research (from the 1980s on) would also be very useful. Thanks in advance,

Suggestions/interest for a Mark Poster memorial panel for IR14

Dear all: I'd like to thank the organizers of this year's AoIR conference for putting together a wonderful event. I learned so much, made new friends, and reunited with old ones. Next year's AoIR in Denver is of course a long way away. However, while it is fresh in my mind, I wanted to put out the following informal call. As was noted on this listserv a couple of weeks ago, my colleague at the University of California, Irvine, Mark Poster, passed away recently. He was a mentor and friend and I was influenced by his work since my earliest days of graduate school. I am thinking of trying to put together a panel for the 2013 AoIR meetings in Denver celebrating Mark's work and influence on a range of fields having to do with the internet, technology, information, media, culture, and so on. I haven't thought it through in detail but I think a great way to celebrate his legacy would be for people to talk about how their work has been shaped by Mark's thought. If you might be interested in participating in such a panel, could you please email me at tboellst(a)uci.edu. Also, if you can think of others who might be interested (and might not read this list), be they well-established scholars or more junior ones, please email me their names (and email addresses should you have them). New capture devices and media types are reshaping our personal and collective memories, and personal collections are growing in size and complexity. The Personal Digital Archiving 2013 Conference welcomes a broad community working to ensure long-term access for personal collections and archives. This year, the conference theme focuses on the relationships between collective and individual action around preserving personal digital content. Companies and cultural heritage institutions steward information that documents the life and times of private individuals. At the same time, individuals manage and “self- archive” content for future use by themselves and their families. Personal Digital Archiving 2013 invites proposals on the full range of topics relevant to personal digital archiving. Presentations might address materials and format challenges including family archives of photographs and home movies, personal health and financial data, scrapbooking, social network posts, genealogy, blogs, email and other correspondence. Presentations might also address themes that unite digital archives, including interface design for archives; institutional practices; community outreach; tools; and funding models. Dear fellow-Aoir'ers, As ICA 2013 deadline is fast upon us, Robert Bodle and I also would like to post a CFP on the list. The working title is Politics of Incivility: [insert some sexy byline]. The panel will examine and complicate various anti-social activities such as trolling, hate speech, and others that take place on various online platforms. One of us will be presenting on anti-gay and racist Facebook group and fan pages and the other will be presenting on GNAA's trolling activities on Redditt. We are looking for abstracts that examine trolling networks as counterpublics that complicate mainstream discourse of online communities through disruptive play. We haven't written down a description yet so as not to limit the scope of the panel before we settle on abstracts. Call for papers: Twitter and Microblogging: Political, Professional and Personal Practices<http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/events/twitter_and_microblogging/> Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK, 10 - 12 April 2013 Twitter and other micro-blogging platforms, with their short messages, in some cases circulated to millions of followers, were at first viewed with condescension and amusement: famously David Cameron, the British Prime Minister, opined, "Too many tweets make a twat." Other media initially treated Twitter as offering platforms for celebrities, pools of banality, streams of dumbed-down opinions. But people using Twitter quickly found an enormous range of diverse uses, revelling in opportunities for creativity that microblogging and associated applications offered. People involved Twitter in organising revolutions, disseminating scientific findings, promoting brands, communicating with friends and crafting new forms of artistic endeavours and communications. Where Twitter is not allowed, as in China, other microblogging platforms have taken on similar functions. This conference brings together a range of researchers doing detailed analyses of the discourse, practices, and social interactions of microblogging communities.
