Dear list members, My new book entitled Tweets and the Streets might be of interest for some of you, especially those working on the new media/activism nexus or social networking. You find a full description of the book below. Tweets and the Streets is based on an ethnographic research conducted with movement activists in Egypt, Spain and the US and it focuses on the use of social media as a means of mobilisation. I have conducted 80 in-depth interviews and analysis of social media messages, as well as observations of protest events in these 3 countries. Among the main findings of the book are 1) the chiefly emotional rather than tactical use of social media to create shared identities and affective motivations among participants, rather than to coordinate "combat operations" 2) the use of social media as means not to sustain a "cyberspace" independent from geographic reality, but rather to organise physical gatherings in public space, and sustain a new experience of public space 3) the nature of social media activists in these movements as a diffuse and reluctant leadership, involved in choreographing the action of social movements, in setting the general scene for people's participation. From the Arab Spring to the "indignados" protests in Spain and the Occupy movement, Paolo Gerbaudo examines the relationship between the rise of social media and the emergence of new forms of protest. Drawing on an extensive ethnographic research, comprising 80 in-depth interviews, observations of protest events and textual analysis of social media messages, the book unveils the narratives and identities involved in the grassroots appropriation of corporate platforms like Facebook and Twitter as means of organisation and mobilisation. Gerbaudo argues that activists' use of Twitter and Facebook does not fit with the image of a "cyberspace" detached from physical reality. Instead, social media are used as part of a project of re-appropriation of public space and are turned by protest organises into means to 'choreograph' the assembling of individualised constituencies around "occupied" places such as Cairo's Tahrir Square or New York's Zuccotti Park. Workshop: Developing methods for the microanalysis of online data Date: 9-10 January 2013 Venue: Radboud University Nijmegen Organisers: David Giles (Winchester University), Jessica Lester (Washington State University), Trena Paulus (University of Tennessee) and Wyke Stommel (Radboud University Nijmegen) Although computer-mediated communication (CMC) has been studied extensively for the last three decades, few researchers have explicitly addressed methodological issues in this field, particularly at the level of microanalysis - the intensive study of language use typically found in traditions such as conversation analysis, discursive psychology and discourse analysis. In this workshop we will be discussing the relevance of mediated context to the qualitative microanalysis of online data. Participants are asked to bring their own online data (in English translation) so that these can be used as input for the small group work. Groups will collaboratively analyse data (data session) and/or discuss the theme in the context of participants' own research projects and plans. Each workshop session will end with brief presentations of the methodological considerations or "findings" of each small group. In addition to the thematic sessions, a demonstration will be given on the use of Atlas.ti-software for analysing online data. The short-term aim of this workshop is to have a special issue in a renowned journal on methodological issues around the microanalysis of online data. The long-term aim is to build a network of qualitative researchers who study online communication in order to move forward the development of new and/or adapted methodologies that can better inform data analysis in the social sciences and humanities. These data come from various sources: governments posting their operational data within Open Data initiatives, companies opening non-strategic data, scientists increasingly sharing banks of data, or Internet users. Traditional ways of processing data seem insufficient in front of these big data. This fact calls for new means of thinking how to extract, store (grids, cloud computing ...), share, analyze and visualize data. The Web 2.0 related term “data science” (i.e. extracting, processing, analyzing data) now concerns a large number of activities similarly facing large data sets, such as scientific research or data journalism. This symposium will cover the theoretical and practical implications of social research based on data. It calls for critical works that identify the quantitative leap induced by large masses of data available for social sciences, and the related disciplinary and epistemological consequences, e.g. notions of author or producer, public and private actors strategies, citizen uses of data, emerging ecosystems of data processing, local initiatives currently developing Open Data services and applications with related business issues. Epistemological reflections, work in progress and position papers are welcome and can cover one of the following areas: *1. **Digital data and social sciences: History and Epistemology* Large data corpora have been processed for a long time within scientific practices: what is the precise nature of the qualitative leap brought by current technologies? Does the presence of massive data change social science practices? What are the needs, expectations, challenges and emerging solutions? Do these new methods of processing digital data imply epistemological changes? *2. **The politics of Open Data, citizen participation and local eco-systems.* In recent years, Open Data initiatives have been set off by both law changes and actors’ specific demands. It aims to make public data available and reusable. This movement raises many questions: Is it a public service improvement, a regional development tool? What is the relationship between supply and demand, top/down and bottom/up initiatives? Who are those who really understand the data? Can these uses be interpreted as civic empowerment or democracy renewal, as suggested by the proximity between "Open Data" and "Open Government"? How can traditional participatory democracy use these data? What are the possible links between public data and already implemented territorial e-democracy practices? *3. **New sociotechnical mediations, training and professionalization.* Which elements should compose the knowledge base necessary to understand issues around these data? What are the new forms of mediation facilitating citizen uses of released data and its applications? This third axis will highlight, for each category of actors, the type of skills required to be able to understand the data ecosystem in all its complexity, from technical to political aspects. UMBC Cybersecurity Center Launches

Dear fellow AOIR'ers -- I am pleased to announce the creation of the UMBC Center for Cybersecuity, which was formally launched this past Wednesday at MDC3 in Baltimore, MD. (which also partially explains why I wasn't at #ir13.) The Center for Cybersecurity is an interdisciplinary university center that unifies UMBC’s many cybersecurity and cybersecurity-related capabilities. It aims to provide both Maryland and the nation with academic and research leadership, collaboration, innovation, and outreach in this critical discipline by streamlining our academic, research, workforce development, and technology incubation activities to advance UMBC’s position as a leading research university in cybersecurity-related disciplines. (CS Prof. Anupam Joshi serves as Director, and I am the Assistant Director.) *Multiple Tenure-Track Positions in Human Centered Computing / Digital Everyware * http://is.njit.edu/about/jobs/ Located a short train ride from New York City and Silicon Alley, the Department of Information Systems, in the College of Computing Sciences, at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks applications for multiple full-time, tenure-track faculty positions (Assistant, Associate and Full Professor / Department Chair), for Fall 2013. We seek candidates with excellent research and teaching abilities in Human Centered Computing (HCC) who are committed to actively engaging in interdisciplinary research. We encourage applications from any area of HCC including but not limited to: Social Computing, Digital Everyware/Ubicomp, CSCW, Assistive Technologies and Usable Privacy and Security. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in UXD, UX-Research, and the building and testing of innovative interactive systems, and grants. Faculty and student entrepreneurship is encouraged and new hires will have the opportunity advise Ph.D. candidates and to work with start-ups housed in NJIT's Enterprise Development Center. U.S. News & World Report's 2012 Guide to America's Best Colleges ranks NJIT among the top tier of national research universities. NJIT is the largest technical State University in the NY-NJ tri-state area and is undergoing rapid transformation. The university, located at University Heights Newark is at the center of large urban renewal project, and under the leadership of a newly appointed President and Provost. The College of Computing Sciences is current engaged in a Dean Search. Information Systems hired four faculty in the past year as part of the university's continuing strategic growth and we are looking to significantly strengthen our efforts in HCC in the coming years. As such, we expect incoming HCC faculty to have a significant role in shaping the future of the department, college and university. We benefit from our close proximity to midtown Manhattan (30 minutes by train) and the highly livable communities of northern New Jersey. The area has a high concentration of business and government organizations, with many opportunities for field research, collaboration and consulting.
