policies on students and social media platforms
by Katrin Tiidenberg 14 Nov '12

14 Nov '12

Hi Holly and others, we have a policy that all of the course materials (syllabus, lecture slides, readings, tasks) need to be on Moodle and the professor can choose whether they let students enroll themselves (in which case people who don't actually take your course could enroll as well) or whether to enroll students themselves. Mostly everyone picks the easier option of having students self-enroll. The class I'm teaching now and the one I taught last spring both had additional blogs (on Posterous, because the whole 'blog via email' seems to work well for students here), this time around I asked the students whether they wanted the blog to be private (so just the people who are in the class can view it) or public. Mixed results so far. I'd be really interested in the policy you draft, it sounds like something that will become an issue very soon. best regards, Katrin Tiidenberg University of Tallinn Institute of International and Social Studies

CFP International Symposium: Towards an Ecology of Data. Political and Scientific Issues of Digital Data.
by clément mabi 13 Nov '12

13 Nov '12

Dear AOIR members, Here is a CFP for an upcoming symposium in Paris about the various issues concerning data and research & politics. I hope it might be of interest for some of you, Best, Clement Mabi *Call for Paper* *International Symposium* *Towards an Ecology of Data.* * Political and Scientific Issues of Digital Data.* *February 14th, 2013* *Institut des Sciences de la Communication du CNRS (ISCC)* *20 rue Berbier-du-Mets, Paris, France* There is currently a growing number of data produced and disseminated in professional, public and scientific spaces. These data come from various sources: governments posting their operational data within Open Data initiatives, companies opening non-strategic data, scientists increasingly sharing banks of data, or Internet users. Traditional ways of processing data seem insufficient in front of these big data. This fact calls for new means of thinking how to extract, store (grids, cloud computing ...), share, analyze and visualize data. The Web 2.0 related term ?data science? (i.e. extracting, processing, analyzing data) now concerns a large number of activities similarly facing large data sets, such as scientific research or data journalism. This symposium will cover the theoretical and practical implications of social research based on data. It calls for critical works that identify the quantitative leap induced by large masses of data available for social sciences, and the related disciplinary and epistemological consequences, e.g. notions of author or producer, public and private actors strategies, citizen uses of data, emerging ecosystems of data processing, local initiatives currently developing Open Data services and applications with related business issues. Epistemological reflections, work in progress and position papers are welcome and can cover one of the following areas: *1. **Digital data and social sciences: History and Epistemology* Large data corpora have been processed for a long time within scientific practices: what is the precise nature of the qualitative leap brought by current technologies? Does the presence of massive data change social science practices? What are the needs, expectations, challenges and emerging solutions? Do these new methods of processing digital data imply epistemological changes? *2. **The politics of Open Data, citizen participation and local eco-systems.* In recent years, Open Data initiatives have been set off by both law changes and actors? specific demands. It aims to make public data available and reusable. This movement raises many questions: Is it a public service improvement, a regional development tool? What is the relationship between supply and demand, top/down and bottom/up initiatives? Who are those who really understand the data? Can these uses be interpreted as civic empowerment or democracy renewal, as suggested by the proximity between "Open Data" and "Open Government"? How can traditional participatory democracy use these data? What are the possible links between public data and already implemented territorial e-democracy practices? *3. **New sociotechnical mediations, training and professionalization.* Which elements should compose the knowledge base necessary to understand issues around these data? What are the new forms of mediation facilitating citizen uses of released data and its applications? This third axis will highlight, for each category of actors, the type of skills required to be able to understand the data ecosystem in all its complexity, from technical to political aspects. What are the solutions implemented by the various professions facing this flow of data? What types of mediation would increase effective ownership of released data by civil society? What are the training needs to sustain and develop these efforts? How are these new forms of data management skills reorganizing professions (particularly journalism), companies and administrations involved in Open Data? *Submission* We welcome proposals based on current experiments, theoretical reflections and comparative analysis. They can be written in English or in French. Proposals should be 1000 words long, short bibliography included. Selected contributions will be published in a special issue of a French-speaking academic journal. *Proposals should be sent to:* Clement Mabi: clement.mabi(a)utc.fr and Jean-Christophe Plantin: jean-christophe.plantin(a)utc.fr *Deadlines* ? Deadline for submission of proposals: November 15th 2012 ? Notification of acceptance: December 15th 2012 ? ICA Pre-conference: Conditions of Mediation - 17 June 2013 at Birkbeck, University of London
by Tim Markham 13 Nov '12

13 Nov '12

** With apologies for cross-posting ** REMINDER: the abstract submission deadline is 20 November 2012 Conditions of Mediation: Phenomenological Approaches to Media, Technology and Communication 2013 International Communication Association (ICA) Preconference Philosophy, Theory and Critique Division 17 June 2013, Birkbeck, University of London Organizers: Dr Scott Rodgers (s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk <mailto:s.rodgers@bbk.ac.uk> ) and Dr Tim Markham (t.markham(a)bbk.ac.uk <mailto:t.markham@bbk.ac.uk> ) Confirmed keynote speakers: Dr David Berry, Professor Nick Couldry, Professor Graham Harman, Professor Lisa Parks, Professor Paddy Scannell. Conference Outline: Media theory seems to have reached a moment in which it is effectively orthodox to presume we must pay attention first and foremost to the intricacies of everyday experience. Ethnographic audience studies, for example, have attacked assumptions that there is a discrete relationship between media content and audiences, arguing that media forms, content and technologies have indeterminate and multifaceted significance within the daily rhythms and spaces of their everyday lives. Studies of digital and networked media, meanwhile, have put into question the very notion of 'audiences' as the starting point for understanding mediated experience. For some, accounting for the intricacies of everyday mediated experience has implied asking people what they actually do with media. But for others this is not enough: instead, the question is what constitutes the conditions of media experience in the first place. How do political configurations of discourses and inherited dispositions prefigure mediated action? How do material arrangements themselves constitute environments for mediated experience? How might we account for nonhuman agency, for example the ways in which software objects interact not only with human perceptions but also each other? Such questions point to a renewed confidence in explaining not just how but also why media, technology and communication are experienced as they are - all the while resisting a reversion to functionalism. These interests in the very conditions of mediation suggest, if sometimes only implicitly, an emerging interest in a phenomenology of media. Indeed, phenomenology - broadly the structuring of perception - has seemingly obvious relevance for recent academic interests in media experience. Yet its use or invocation in media studies has been scattered. While this might simply reflect the considerable diversity of phenomenological philosophies and their applications, there have also been concerted efforts recently to rethink phenomenology across the social sciences and humanities. Paired with recent interests in mediated experience, the time seems apt to reassess what it might mean to theorize media phenomenologically. Conditions of Mediation seeks to bring together scholars from a very wide range of perspectives - such as media history, media archaeology, audience studies, political theory, metaphysics, software studies, science and technology studies, digital aesthetics, cultural geography and urban studies - to reflect explicitly on the phenomenological groundings of their work on media. The phenomenological thinking to which participants might connect will be broad-based, ranging from core thinkers such as Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Sartre to those with looser affiliations to phenomenology per se, for example Arendt, Bergson, Bourdieu, Deleuze, Garfinkel, Ingold, Latour, Whitehead and Harman. In short, the overall aim is that this preconference goes beyond a mere congregation of media phenomenologists. Instead, it will encourage critical reflection on what various readings of phenomenology might offer media and technology studies that other approaches cannot. Conversely, it will also welcome reflections on the limits of phenomenological approaches in philosophical, theoretical, political and empirical terms. Format: The pre-conference will feature two plenaries of keynote speakers, as well as four-to-six panels of paper presentations selected from submissions of abstracts. Paper submission process: Please send an abstract (max 200 words) of your paper to both Scott Rodgers (s.rodgers(a)bbk.ac.uk <mailto:s.rodgers@bbk.ac.uk> ) and Tim Markham (t.markham(a)bbk.ac.uk <mailto:t.markham@bbk.ac.uk> ) by 20 November 2012. Authors will be informed regarding acceptance/rejection for the preconference no later than December 20, 2012. Venue: The preconference will be hosted at Birkbeck, University of London WC1E 7HX. Based in Bloomsbury, the intellectual heart of London and home to several of the University of London's constituent colleges, the Birkbeck campus is just three tube stops away from the Hilton London Metropole (the ICA conference hotel). The event will be held in the Clore Management Centre, which offers an excellent lecture theatre, rooms for parallel streams and break-out discussions as well as space for catering and informal networking. Call for Applications: International M.A. in New Media at the University of Amsterdam
by Anne Helmond 13 Nov '12

13 Nov '12

International M.A. in New Media at the University of Amsterdam Call for Applications for Fall 2013, rolling admissions open on 1 November 2012 and close on 1 April 2013 http://mastersofmedia.hum.uva.nl/2012/11/01/call-fall-2013/ One-year and two-year New Media M.A. Programs available. For the two-year "Research Master's Program: New Media Track," see below. New Media M.A. One-year Program The International M.A. in New Media & Digital Culture (NMMA) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is accepting applications for 2013-2014 academic year. Applications open on 1 November 2012 and close on 1 April 2013. The NMMA is a one-year residence program undertaken in English at the UvA in the heart of Amsterdam. Students become actively engaged in critical Internet culture, with an emphasis on new media theory and aesthetics, including theoretical materialist traditions, practical information visualization trends and web data using digital methods. The overall focus of the MA is on training the students as new media researchers. Our permanent faculty are recognized experts in their fields, who are committed to their students. The program admits approximately fifty students per year, classes are no larger than 20, and the faculty-to-student ratio is 1:5. Curriculum 1st Semester: students follow a course in new media research practices and academic blogging, led by critical Internet theorist and tactical media practitioner Geert Lovink. Their entries form the internationally noted Masters of Media site, http://mastersofmedia.hum.uva.nl/, regarded as a top blog for new media research and nominated for a Dutch award for best educational blog. The concurrent new media theories course focuses on contemporary thought around such subject matters as protocol, apparatus theory, media ecologies, informational economies, blogging, hacking, comparative media studies and wild card theory. The final first semester class, Digital Methods, given by the program Chair, Richard Rogers, trains students in novel techniques for Internet research, http://www.digitalmethods.net/. 2nd Semester: the student chooses between theme seminars on digital sexualities, new media politics, information visualization, ubiquitous computing and others offered outside of new media. The digital sexualities course is theoretically inclined in the traditions of virtual ethnography. The new media politics class is concerned with issue mapping, and is a member of the international network of mapping courses following Bruno Latour's methods. The finest student work is entered into the annual controversy mapping award in Toulouse. Information visualization is a joint theoretical-practical collaboration between designers, programmers and analysts, where the product is an online tool, digital visualization or interactive graphic. Ubiquitous computing follows the disappearance of the computer, and the computerisation of everyday life, but in actuality is a gadget studies course, exploring the scholarship on mobile urban lifestyles and locative media. The program of study concludes with the M.A. thesis, an original analysis that makes a contribution to the field, undertaken with the close mentorship of a faculty supervisor. The graduation ceremony includes an international symposium with renowned speakers. Graduates of the NMMA have gained an analytical and practical skill-set that enables diverse careers in research and practice-related areas that make use of the Internet, including business, government, NGOs, and creative industries that are evolving with emerging new media. Our graduates include Lotte Meijer, winner of a Webby award, and Eva Kol, whose MA thesis, Hyves, was published by Kosmos in 2008 and sold over 5000 copies its first year in print. Student Life The quality-of-living in Amsterdam ranks among the highest of international capitals. UvA's competitive tuition (see below) and the ubiquity of spoken English both on and off-campus make the program especially accommodating for foreign students. The city's many venues, festivals, and other events provide remarkably rich cultural offerings and displays of technological innovation. The program has ties to organizations including PICNIC, the Waag Society, Institute for Network Cultures, Virtual Platform, govcom.org, and other cultural institutions, where internship opportunities and collaborations may be available, in consultation with the student's thesis supervisor. Students attend and blog, twitter or otherwise capture local new media events and festivals, while commenting as well on larger international issues and trends pertaining to new media. The quality of student life is equally to be found in the university's lively and varied intellectual climate. NMMA students come from North and South America, Africa, Asia and across Europe and from academic and professional backgrounds including journalism, art and design, engineering, the humanities and social sciences. The International M.A. in New Media is an up-to-date digital humanities program of study. Application and Deadline Rolling admissions from 1 November 2012 to 1 April 2013 for Fall 2013 admission. Please write to Professor Richard Rogers, New Media Program Director, University of Amsterdam, email rogers[at]uva.nl International M.A. in New Media at the University of Amsterdam Research Master's in Media Studies, New Media Track Two-year program The New Media Research Master is a specialised track within the Media Studies Research Master's Degree Program, and focuses on the theoretical, artistic, practical and methodological study of digital culture. The New Media Research Master has two 'routes,' the theoretical aesthetic and the practical empirical ones. In the theoretical aesthetic route, students focus on contemporary media theory, with a concentration on critical media art, including areas that have been pioneered in Amsterdam (tactical media, distributed aesthetics). The other route is the practical empirical, which is the other specialty of new media research in Amsterdam: digital methods and information visualization. Students also may combine coursework from each of the two routes, putting together a course package that treats aesthetics and visualization, on the one hand, or media art and digital methods, on the other. As a crucial component of the Amsterdam New Media Research Program, the New Media Research Master encourages fieldwork and lab work, which result in a 'new media project' and also provide materials for the thesis. In undertaking fieldwork, students are given the opportunity to spend a period abroad for structured data collection and study, doing either a 'research internship' or an independent project, supervised by a staff member. For example, in the past students have studied ICTs for development in Africa, and electronics factories in China. The lab work, which fits well with the practical-empirical route, would result in a research project that combines web data collection, tool use and development as well as visualisation. It often addresses a contemporary issue, such as Wikileaks Cablegate, and brings together a group of researchers in a data sprint, hackathon or barcamp, intensively working to output new info-graphics, blog postings and research reports on the state of art of the subject. Outstanding New Media research master graduates are expected to compete favorably for PhD positions nationally and internationally, and have skill sets enabling new media research in scholarly and professional settings. The New Media Research Master Track has as its target 15 students annually. Curriculum Year one 1st Semester: students follow courses in new media research practices and digital methods, which provides in-depth training in Internet critique and empirical analysis of the web. The research practices course is an introduction to and overall resource crash course on searching & collecting, social media data, journals in the field, blogging, the Amsterdam Scene, new media events, academic writing, (data) collections, data tools, data visualisation, new media methods, key works, collaboration & coordination. Concurrently students take new media theories, a course that introduces students to some of the major theoretical traditions in new media, including cybernetics, network theory, concepts of power/control, software studies, participatory culture, surveillance studies, digital labour, locative media and neo-materialism. 2nd Semester: the student follows media & politics, which places both historically crucial and contemporary political manifestos in relation to media analyses, encouraging a consideration of concepts such as labour, spectacle, the machine, identity and affect. Students also have an elective, and may choose between digital sexualities, new media politics, information visualization, ubiquitous computing and others in the research master's. (For more details on those courses, see the one-year MA description above.) Year two 1st Semester: students may pursue a "research internship" or a study abroad program with partner universities. They may undertake fieldwork for a research project, or join a digital methods lab project. Students also may follow an elective course, taken from the broader Media Studies offerings. 2nd Semester: students follow an elective course, where again the choice is between digital sexualities, new media politics, information visualization, ubiquitous computing and others. Students also write the thesis, which is expected to be original and make a contribution to a discourse in the field. The research master's degree program concludes with a presentation and defense of the thesis. Application and Deadline Rolling admissions from 1 November 2012 to 1 April 2013 for Fall 2013 admission. For Your Consideration: The NEW AOIR Ethics Document
by Annette Markham 13 Nov '12

13 Nov '12

Dear Colleagues: Almost exactly ten years ago, the AOIR ethics committee sent a note to this mailing list asking for the AOIR members to endorse a new statement on ethical decision-making. On behalf of the AIOR ethics committee, we are pleased to present Version 2.0 for your consideration. You might remember that we provided a draft version of this document last year. After collecting comments and then discussing the document at the AOIR conference in Seattle, we revised to the final form. The Ethics Committee has approved this document. And the Executive Committee has endorsed it. Now, we ask for your endorsement as a membership. The question we’d like you to answer is this: "Should AoIR endorse the ethics committee's new statement on ethical decision-making as its statement of principles of Internet research ethics, with the understanding that this statement is open to future revisions in light of additional ethical insight and/or new technological developments?" If you are a member of AOIR (and if you’re not, now’s a great time to consider joining!), please: a) review the new document http://www.aoir.org/documents/ethics-guidelines/ethics.pdf and then b) login to the members-only section of the AOIR website to vote on whether or not you would like AOIR membership to endorse it. https://aoir.org/welcomemembers/ Voting is now open, and will close midnight, November 26, Eastern Standard Time, 2012. As always, we are grateful to the members of the ethics committee for their hard work, deliberation, and insight. Best Regards, Annette Markham, incoming chair of the AOIR Ethics Committee Elizabeth Buchanan, outgoing chair of the AOIR ethics committee Alex Halavais, President of AOIR P.S. Details below. Michael CEPE 2013 - Ambiguous Technologies: Philosophical Issues, Practical Solutions, Human Nature http://cepe2013.com/index.php/call-for-papers Autónoma University of Lisbon in 2013, in Lisbon (Portugal), July 1st-3rd. Important dates: Abstracts/Papers • Call for extended abstracts: July 15th, 2012 • Extended abstracts submission due: December 15th, 2012 • Abstracts selection: February 15th, 2013 • Full papers submission due: May 15th, 2013 Panels/Tracks • Submission due: February 15th, 2013 • Selection: May 15th, 2013 Downloads • Paper Style Guide (PDF) • Paper Model (Word) Information: Aims ICTs have produced dramatic shifts in what we presume to be “natural” in and for human beings, including a multiplicity of changes in our psychological and social qualities. Many of these shifts, as intended, are arguably beneficial (e.g. fostering multiple relationships and novel forms of sociability) as well as unintended negative (e.g. massive change and responsibility). Our efforts to foster a better utilisation of ICTs in human societies, first requires awareness of these multiple sides of new technologies. By approaching the design and uses of ICTs through a balance of philosophical reflection and concrete resolutions we should unfold their more positive potentials while minimising their negative impacts. Thus, CEPE 2013, as an important worldwide forum that debates ICT philosophical issues in society through the lens of information and computer ethics, will focus on both theoretical and practical dimensions of analysing the ambiguities of ICTs for the sake of fostering more positive than negative designs, uses, and outcomes. Keynote Speakers (alphabetic order) • Marty Wolf, Bemidji State University, US (research interest: information ethics and the philosophy of information and computation) • Rocci Luppicini, University of Ottawa, Canada (research interest: technoethics and human enhancement) • Sylvester Arnab, Coventry University, UK (research interest: immersive technologies for health and learning) • Ugo Pagallo, Turin University, Italy (research interest: roboethics and law) • Weizenbaum Award Winner (to be defined) Suggested topics: Potential topics for the conference under the umbrella of philosophical issues, practical solutions, human nature are: • Forthcoming technologies (including but not limited to biometrics, memetics, pervasive computing, ubiquitous computing, artificial intelligence, military, nanotechnology, robotics, speckled computing); • Biomedical technology, health and enhancement (including but not limited to artificial vision, body implants, neural interfaces, synaptic sensors); • Technologies of self and consciousness (including but not limited to augmentation, extended memory); • ICT: Philosophy, religion and technical issues (including but not limited to philosophy/history, justice, ethics- intellectual property, responsibility-, religion, engineering- design and reflection); • Technology, gender and culture (including but not limited to education, e-entertainment, computer/video games, media, social networking, serious games); • Environmental and sustainability technologies (including but not limited to green ICT, ICT ecological footprint, sustainable technologies transfer); • ICT vis-à-vis globalisation (including but not limited to ICT4D); • ICT vis-à-vis intercultural dialogue (including but not limited to positive/negative case-studies); • International ethics, law and policy issues (including but not limited to context awareness, cyber security, surveillance). Apologies for cross-posting. *********************** Dear colleagues, Please find below the Call for Papers of the International Conference "Technology in the Age of Information", which will be held July 4 - 6, 2013, in Lisbon, Portugal. More information about the conference at http://www.spt2013.com We are looking forward to your submissions! Feel free to circulate this message to interested parties. Best regards, José Luís Garcia, President of SPT 2013 ICS - University of Lisbon Av. Prof. Anibal de Bettencourt, 9 1600-189 Lisboa, Portugal ********************************************** *Call For papers* *Technology in the Age of Information** * *18th International Conference of the Society for Philosophy and Technology* *ISEG, Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal* *July 4-6, 2013* *Special Corporate Workshop July 3, 2013* The School of Economics and Management (ISEG-UTL) and the SOCIUS research centre at the Technical University of Lisbon and the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-UL) are organising the 18th Biennial International Conference of the Society for Philosophy and Technology (SPT), which will be held July 4 - 6, 2013, at the ISEG-UTL. On the early evening before, July 3 from 3-7 pm, the conference will also co-host a special corporate workshop. The SPT 2013 theme is *Technology in the Age of Information**. *A main aim of the conference is to encourage debate on the cultural, social, economic, political and ethical implications of advances in information and media technology. Digital networks and computerized technological systems have enlarged the domain of human technological action and responsibility, which raises new questions about the impacts of globalization and of the expanding information economy on the public and cultural spheres. A challenge facing the philosophy of technology and STS disciplines is to reflect upon our changed human condition and propose new ways to think through the quandaries technologies generate. Reflecting on the emergence of information and communication technologies (ICTs), several questions may be raised: How do our lives change in an information society? What role do ICTs play in culture, politics, or social revolutions? How do ICTs shape the global economy? What new challenges do ICTs present to the public sphere and to individual privacy? How do ICTs affect human cognition and aesthetic sensibilities? How are ICT converging with nano and biotechnologies? Do ICTs stimulate ideas of new technological utopias? Many other topics can be addressed and are welcome! As in previous SPT conferences, contributions from a variety of disciplines are encouraged. Bringing together scholars and practitioners from a wide spectrum of fields, who focus on understanding the relationship of technology and the human condition is a goal of the conference. Showcasing contributions from philosophers, social scientist, natural scientists, engineers, and policy makers, SPT conferences provide lively and thought-provoking interdisciplinary discussion. The *list of tracks outlined below *is suggestive of the topics that will be considered, but does by no means restrict them: *1 – *ICTs 1: globalization, informational economy, and commodification *2 – *ICTs 2: control, discrimination, and surveillance *3 – *ICTs 3: Webs, imaginaries, and utopias *4 – *ICTs 4: new media, public sphere, and democracy *5 – *ICTs 5: politics, alternatives and revolutions, *6 – *Consumption and mobile lifestyles *7 – *Informatics, nano- and bio-technological convergences *8 – *Materiality and immateriality in the digital era *9 – *Information and aesthetics *10 – *Reflective engineering and systems1<#13af4a9c333b6257_sdfootnote1sym> *11 – *Philosophy of engineering and design *12 – *Phenomenology of technology *13 – *Ethics, politics, and the good life *14 – *Environment, sustainability, and risks *15 – *Technology, gender, and culture *16 – *Technological Innovation *17 – *Technology and critical thinking *18 – *Philosophy of technology and social sciences *Submissions * *Abstracts *should be submitted by *February 1, 2013. *They must be between *500 and 750 *words in length (references excluded) and submitted via email as embedded plain text or an attachment in RTF, WORD, or PDF format. Abstracts will be subject to blind refereeing. They should include the name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s), contact details and the paper title. They should also contain the number and name of the track to which the abstract is submitted. If an abstract does not seem to fit with any topic, simply note that with the submission. All submissions are welcome, and authors should not feel constrained by the topics. Identification information will be then removed during the review process. For this reason, abstracts should not contain author-identifying references. Authors of accepted abstracts are kindly invited to submit full versions of their papers (8,000-10,000 words) until* May 31, 2013,* for publication in a digital support (Pen Drive or CD-ROM) to be distributed to conference attendees.
