The Digital Cultures Program was founded in 2000 as a critical investigation of the intersections of digital technology, society and culture. Digital cultures research is a key research focus in the new amalgamation of the Digital Cultures Program with the Department of Media and Communications and we seek to expand this emphasis through the appointment of a new lecturer in Digital Cultures. Seeking participants for HASTAC panel about social media use in the classroom

I’m looking for two or three participants for a panel about the use of new media in the college classroom to be presented at the 2013 HASTAC conference<http://hastac2013.org/cfp/> in Toronto, April 25-28. The style will be a structured conversation among panelist in which we share our experiences, successes, and failures of using social/digital media in the classroom. Because the conference theme is about the past and looking forward, I envision the panel talking about the transformation of technologies alongside the evolution of student skills and literacies. The purpose is to think critically about the possibilities and limitations of using social media as a resource in the classroom and to further explore some of the opportunities and challenges associated with using digital media as a teaching tool. Possible questions could address: Is Live Tweeting in class beneficial or a distraction? How might Wikis support collaborative learning? At a time when students can instantaneously look up information online, how might tests, assignments, and evaluations tap into connected learning in and out of the classroom? Where is the line between collaboration and cheating? What is the purpose of exams, which require students to study and memorize information, in an era in which information is quickly and readily available online? How can social media tools facilitate new modes of learning? What digital skills and literacies should colleges equip students with in order to prepare them for future careers? CFP “Small Data” in a “Big Data” World, Panel at International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI) 2013 to be held May 15-18, 2013 on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign IL. Recently the academic research world has been flooded with discussion of the uses and implications of “Big Data.” For those of us whose research focuses on digital environments this discussion includes conferences, grants, special publications, and job announcements that focus on Big Data and the computational turn in social science and humanities research. ‘Big Data’ is not necessarily defined by the size of the data set, for humanities scholars have long been interested in huge textual and image-based corpora. Instead, ‘Big Data’ refers to the increasing complexity of relationships between data objects in a given set, often requiring large-scale computational and algorithmic resources for analysis. ‘Small Data’ research, on the other hand, often begins with a theoretical (e.g., critical race theory) or methodological (e.g., case study or ethnography) approach, which is then applied to digital data drawn from less-popular websites, YouTube videos, or even individual blog posts and comments. Unfortunately, the tools used to analyze Big Data seem to be influencing modes of thought about new media and digital research away from the theoretical and towards the scientistic. For example, in a recent article Bruns and Burgess (2012) argue that humanist, interpretive studies of social media are ‘ideosyncratic, non-repeatable, and non-verifiable’. Although Bruns and Burgess concede that there is space for ‘traditional qualitative methods’, their suggestion is that these methods need to be ‘integrated and innovated’ upon in a ‘big data’ context. Given the increasing amounts of attention (e.g., external funding, public policy, or student interest) ‘big data’ is accruing, where does this leave Small Data research and researchers? This panel seeks to explore the position of Small Data in relation to the discussion and/or use of Big Data. As the definition of Big Data is still in flux we are using Bruns & Burgess (2012) to ground our individual presentation. We are seeking presentations that will explore a variety of views on this turn toward Big Data and the impact on the researched, the researcher, and academia. References: Bruns, A., & Burgess, J. Hi fellow AoIRists, Hope everyone had fun at IR13! As you all know, the ICA deadline is quickly approaching, and I'm looking for a final panelist for a group looking at (qualitative or quantitative) social science questions using social media data with a combination of computational and social scientific methods. The panel is tentatively titled "Downsizing Data: Analyzing Social Digital Traces," to emphasize narrowing social media's big data issues into specific samples and particular questions. Our current panelists are looking at qualitative research questions present in information sharing on Twitter, networks and identity on Tumblr, and social behaviors reflected in data on Foursquare. We're looking for someone who is working on another platform different from these (or potentially a cross-platform project). Again, we're aiming for someone who can speak to using computational methods (for data collection or analysis) in the analysis of social science questions (whether qualitative or quantitative). Researchers from both domains are increasingly seeking to better understand various facets of the relationship between communication and sociotechnical infrastructures. For example, growing numbers of communication researchers have been employing conceptual tools and methods offered by STS to assist in understanding the sociotechnical character and situatedness of media and information technologies and their configurations. Likewise, in organizational communication, STS concepts have brought attention to the ways in which artifacts influence organizational life. At the same time, more and more STS researchers are drawing upon various facets of critical inquiry provided by communication studies as they examine phenomena that weave together the material and symbolic. For instance a range of conceptual tools from communication studies pertaining to the analysis of audio, textual, and visual objects have been used to examine mediated practices such as the informatization of the body, the role of images in popular representations of science, and the role of rhetoric in the development and introduction of new technologies. Focus of the Special Issue This special issue aims to contribute to the growing dialogue between communication studies and STS by investigating complementarities and divergences between the two fields. From the very start of human culture, media have been employed to fix, share and store expressions and impressions of individual and collective experiences. Taking this continuing twin relation as its point of departure, this special issue seeks to showcase empirical research that studies the interplay of contemporary media, social change and acts and artifacts of memory. The editors are seeking contributions that investigate commemoration, remembrance and memory work as an essential thread in the social and material patterns of modern culture. We are especially interested in empirically grounded submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following questions: - What can we learn about the interplay of individual and collective memory and the affordances of a media ecology that is more and more digitally networked and increasingly mobile and locative? - How may we conceptualize and investigate memory taking account of the dynamics of digitisation, networking and mediatization? - Which methods and approaches are most appropriate for the study of memory work and digital and connective media? - How are memories materially and semiotically mediated? - How does memory travel? How can we conceptualise and study memory work in quotidian mobilities as well as in a range of contexts such as transcultural/transnational western and non-western movements, post-colonial contexts, diasporas and the general flows of peoples, goods and ideas? - What are the dynamics of (counter-)hegemonic discourses of memory in current mediascapes? - What can we learn about how mediated memories are realised in respect of power, class, ethnicity, religion and gender? Hamilton (Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Univ. of Georgia) Robert Bodle (Communication and New Media Studies, College of Mount St. Joseph) This preconference seeks to assess and reformulate approaches to the critical study of advertising in society. Many established approaches are premised upon highly centralized, professionalized and routinized advertising and media systems. Current practices emerging from digitization and a host of social, political, economic and cultural developments arguably outstrip the reach of traditional modes of critique. This program probes the historicity of traditional critiques of advertising, and explores approaches with a better fit to current historical conditions. The purposes of this preconference program are to: 1. Present and discuss constitutive relationships between traditional critiques of advertising and the contexts of their emergence; 2. Probe, discuss and evaluate recent and emergent theoretical resources for more historically responsive bases of a critical assessment of advertising in society; 3.
