Pre-conference date: Wednesday 11 June 2025, 9:00am-4:00pm. Location: University of Colorado (CU) Boulder. The question of trust in media is one of the major questions of our times. The Edelman Trust Barometer has surveyed trust in media for over 20 years, and Gallup has surveyed trust in news since the 1970s. Debates about political polarisation, hyper-partisanship, mis- and dis-information and propaganda all point to questions about trust in media in general, and in the news media in particular. With traditional media business models in a period of ongoing crisis, and the distribution of media content being subject to rapid change through digitization, platformization and social media, the historic “gatekeeper” role of traditional media brands has been losing salience, and new modes of media content distribution, from citizen journalism to the “creator economy”, are on the rise. Communication as a discipline has long been engaged with questions of trust, although the connection has often been implicit rather than explicit. There has been a particular interest in how different media technologies reframe trust issues at macro, meso and micro levels (Flew, 2021). Trust has often emerged as a communication question in response to external developments, such as US President Donald Trump’s claims about “fake news”, arguments over fact-checking, or questions of political interference. At the same time, trust is often subordinated to other concepts, such as truth, ideology and affect. For example, Jürgen Habermas rarely refers to trust in his extended discussion of communicative rationality and its relationship to trust-telling, even though he acknowledges that the acceptance of statements as truthful is never fully a matter of their epistemic rationality, but rests upon subjective context of reception and perceptions of the speaker (Habermas, 2018). This pre-conference will provide scholars in the field with the opportunity for a focused discussion of the relevance of the concept of trust to contemporary communication debates, particularly as they pertain to digital societies and emergent communication technologies. *Topics* We welcome contributions that engage with questions of trust arising within: - media genres and formats such as news and entertainment; - communication professions, such as journalism, public relations, policy-makers, and influencers; - media platforms and expertise; - trust in media, government and cultural institutions; - technologies of trust; - emergent debates around human-machine communication in relation to media trust issues; - information and misinformation, including deepfakes; - trust and the future of communications policy, regulation and governance; - conceptualization, operationalization and measurement of trust. Law enforcement and the formation of the techno-police state in the Nordics The Nordic countries are currently witnessing strong political pressure and willingness to rapidly enact laws and amend existing ones to provide law enforcement and other security forces with new powers to expand their legal arsenal. There is also a pluralization of policing that moves beyond the boundaries of traditional law enforcement agencies, now also delegating responsibility for crime fighting to regions, municipalities and private actors. At the same time, Nordic governments are procuring and deploying advanced police technologies, such as digital platforms, drones, body cameras, facial recognition technologies and so on, to support their operational capacity. Both the new legislations and technologies are politically justified by Nordic states as necessary means in the fight against allegedly increased gang criminality, failed integration of migrant populations, and an increasing geopolitical instability in the region. Consequently, the deployment of police innovations combined with newly proposed policy and legal frameworks have given the police authorities in the Nordic countries significantly extended mandates that can be described as repressive: the use of facial recognition technologies, designating specific residential areas as ‘vulnerable’ or ‘parallel societies’, the implementation of advanced surveillance apparatuses in ‘vulnerable areas’ and establishing police search zones in demarcated areas, the so-called ghetto laws, and algorithmic profiling are some indicative examples. These techno-political developments in law enforcement are inscribed with high expectations of increased effectiveness in the fight against crime, while on the other hand, they raise serious concerns regarding fundamental democratic rights such as privacy, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, etc. It should also be emphasized that the technologies should not be understood as individual tools related to certain practices, but rather a convergence of earlier discrete technologies into complex digital assemblages that is not under total control of any governmental actor. They are moulded by an intricate interplay between institutional forces that condition how the affordances of the technologies are materialized, which also involve private actors as the private sector develops and provides the major part of digital devices and software applications to be used in police practices. Against this background, the aim of this open panel is to bring scholars working with and within STS into dialogue with each other to stimulate renewed critical thinking and engagement with the complexity and specificity of issues related to the new techno-police state in the Nordics. We are particularly interested in contributions that address the digitalization of the police, the legalization of digital platforms in law enforcement, media narratives on the deployment of police technologies - legal developments in regard to the Nordic urban environment or a combination of those. Call for Papers Towards Sustainable Digital Futures: a two day symposium 14th & 15th May 2025, University of Sheffield, UK Over the past decades, digitalization and sustainability have emerged as two of the most significant global trends, yet they have largely developed independently. Digitalization is proposed as a solution to address global sustainability challenges such as climate change, environmental pollution, and biodiversity loss (United Nations 2018; Dwivedi et al. 2022). Nevertheless, technologies such as AI are partial and deceptive solutions to the planetary crises if their sustainability is not addressed. Alarming figures from scientific research have highlighted the detrimental environmental effects of digitalization and datafication. The environmental impacts of digitalization are significant and growing, with rising electricity consumption, water usage, and emissions from devices, networks, and data centers (Gelenbe, 2023; Lange et al., 2023; Li et al., 2023). Moreover, the extraction of critical minerals for digital devices as well as planned obsolescence and poor recycling cause severe ecological harm, particularly in the Global South (Lange et al., 2023). Although societies want digital technologies to serve the social good, there has been far more focus on environmental harms of digital technologies than sustainable alternatives. In this symposium, we ask what a sustainable digital society looks like and how we get there. What kind of research is needed to make the digital future more sustainable? The interdisciplinary symposium will include paper presentations, a workshop, and keynote talk. We welcome different types of presentations: theoretical, empirical, and methodological research papers, “work-in-progress”, practice-based responses, and “wildcards” (suggest your own presentation type). *** Call for Extended Abstracts, Posters, Demos, Artefacts and DC Papers *** 20th International Conference on Persuasive Technology (PERSUASIVE 2025) May 5-7, 2025, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://2025.persuasivetech.org (*** Proceedings to be published by Springer in LNCS ***) In a world in which technology is increasingly present in people’s lives, and changing human behavior and attitudes is often the key to solving many societal and personal problems, studying how technology might be used to influence humans (in their behavior, attitudes and information processing), is paramount. Persuasive Technology is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at influencing people’s attitudes and/or behaviors through persuasion, but not through coercion or deception. The research community aims at enriching people’s lives in various domains such as health and sustainability by supporting people in setting and achieving their own goals, thus helping them change their behavior. The 2025 conference will be hosted in Limassol, Cyprus at the 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina. The previous successful conferences have been organized in Wollongong, Limassol, Eindhoven, Stanford, Oulu, Claremont, Copenhagen, Columbus, Linköping, Sydney, Padua, Chicago, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and Waterloo. The conference series seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry and academia working with various topics of persuasive technology. We welcome the following categories of papers and extended abstracts: • Technical papers that introduce novel persuasive technology approaches and solutions alongside evidence of their potential. • Empirical studies which seek to provide evidence and explanation of methods, principles and theories in persuasive systems. • Conceptual-theoretical papers which primarily seek to contribute to the general understanding of the field’s core themes and specificities. • Other papers, e.g. literature reviews or experience reports. SCOPE The scope of the conference includes (but is not limited to) the following topics: • Persuasive systems’ design • Behavior change support systems • Interaction with persuasive systems, interfaces, visualization • Interactive agents in persuasive systems • (Generative) AI for persuasive technology • Tailored and personalized persuasion • Gamification for persuasion • Evaluation and validation of persuasive applications • Fitting methods for development, evaluation and implementation of persuasive systems • Optimizing engagement with persuasive systems • Software architectures and technical infrastructures for persuasive systems • Smart environments, e.g. IoT, and persuasion • Digital Marketing, eCommerce, eTourism and SMART ecosystems • Motivational, cognitive and perceptual factors in persuasive technology • Application domains for persuasive technologies such as safety, healthy living, sustainable behaviors, learning and training, marketing and commerce, work environments, organizations • Positive technology • Humanizing and/or dehumanizing effects of persuasive technology • Values and ethics in persuasive technology • Privacy, perceived security and trust in persuasive technology • Resilience and counter-persuasion • Detecting persuasive strategies in social media posts • Encouraging adherence to safety measures in pandemic situations Questions that we hope to be addressed include, but are not limited to: • How to recognize and demonstrate the real life effects of persuasive technology on people’s attitudes and behaviours? • How to conduct studies that not just show their effectiveness but are also able to explain in more detail why a design or intervention works? • How to design an evaluation study so that it yields insights that are applicable to other designs or interventions? • How theoretical insight can help improve application and/or intervention planning and design? • How can design and intervention studies improve theory? SUBMISSION TYPES Extended Abstracts We also welcome extended abstract submissions to showcase the results of already conducted and unpublished studies where authors do not wish to publish them as regular papers in the conference proceedings but rather present them at the conference for discussions that can shape the final version (that may be submitted elsewhere later). The studies will also be devoted a time slot for oral presentation in a special session. Extended abstracts must be 4 to 6 pages in Springer LNCS format (including references). Accepted abstracts will be published in the adjunct Springer proceedings (pending approval). Selected papers in this category, based on their quality, level of timeliness and relevance, and completion, will also be invited for submission to Behaviour & Information Technology journal. Poster Presentations This format is suitable for descriptions of smaller studies, project outlines, literature reviews or work-in-progress. Authors should submit a 4-page paper in Springer LNCS format. Accepted posters will be included in the adjunct Springer proceedings (pending approval). Posters will be displayed and presented during a dedicated session of the conference. Demonstrations and Artefacts The Persuasive 2025 track on Demonstrations and Artefact is intended to foster discussion and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners from academia and industry by demonstrating or presenting hardware and software products or artefacts, including those in virtual settings (e.g., simulation systems, VR, and games), that range from early research prototypes to mature production-ready systems. The contribution should be the result of original, innovative work, including solving novel technical or research problems, and/or creating novel individual or industrial UI/UX. Accepted demonstrations or presentations shall be presented live during the conference and will be included as a 4-pages paper in the adjunct Springer proceedings (pending approval). Doctoral Consortium Papers The Doctoral Consortium is a special session of the conference where PhD students can receive advice in a constructive atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers in the area of persuasive technology. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 6- to 8-page proposal in Springer LNCS format describing their research question, its position with respect to the state of the art, their research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct Springer proceedings (pending approval) unless opted out by the student. The Association of Internet Researchers invites submissions for our *26th annual conference*, #AoIR2025 Ruptures <https://aoir.org/aoir2025/> (Niterói, Brazil, 15 October -18 October, 2025), which will take place at the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). *The deadline for submissions is 1 March 2025 at 11:59 PM BRT*. (What time is that for me? <https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=AoIR2025+Submissi…> ) We’re very excited to be making two major innovations this year. This first is that *we are opening space for other languages than English*! For the first time ever, we will accept a limited number of proposals to be presented in Portuguese or Spanish (and that will have simultaneous translation to English). These proposals, however, must be submitted in English for the review process. This is restricted to papers, panels, roundtables and fishbowls. As part of the submission process, you will be asked if you would like to present in Portuguese or Spanish. *If your proposal is a panel, roundtable or fishbowl with multiple languages, you must choose only one language for the entire group. The choice you make at this stage will be binding.* As there will be fewer spots for these presentations--because of the need to provide simultaneous translation--you may be accepted but asked to present in English. The second innovation is the introduction of a *tiered system for conference registration fees.* The final fees will be announced in due course, but we are striving to leave last year’s fees unchanged, while offering seriously discounted rates for participants based in the Global South. Without committing to a concrete number right now, the options we are considering are around US$50 for early-bird members, which would bring AoIR in line with similar conferences in Brazil. We mention this now to encourage submissions from people who might be discouraged from even trying to come to the conference based on previous years’ fees. For this year’s conference we are excited to be continuing with our hybrid options, while learning from the experience of Sheffield. To this end, we shall be accepting proposals for papers to be presented remotely and we will be live streaming a number of the sessions, allowing for remote participation in the conference. We shall be limiting the number of remote presentations to one or two per paper panel, and only for some of the panels per session. Finally, two of our core events will continue to run in both face-to-face and online versions: the Doctoral Colloquium <https://aoir.org/aoir2025/aoir2025subtypes/> and the Early Career Researcher (ECR) event.
