Morten ABOUT THE BOOK Mediating Plureality: Technology, Perception and Ethics in a Divided Democracy is one of the first books of the second Trump administration to deal with affective polarization and truth. Author Morten Bay asks what role media and tech have played in the current democratic decline and finds provocative answers. In the book, he claims that: - Contrary to popular belief, social media content is not to blame. - The problem began with the shift to a high-choice media environment in the early 1990s, including talk radio and the early Web. - Around this time, to stave off online competition, news media began insisting that they owned The Truth. - Simultaneously, the tech industry's faith in data and prediction fostered a new epistemic overconfidence. - This led to widespread epistemic arrogance becoming morally acceptable. - Which, in turn, led to increased self-sorting and the rise of affective polarization. - Even scholars began ignoring centuries of basic epistemology despite of new, neuroscientific advances supporting a constructivist approach to reality perception. Drawing on political theorists who argue that these are perfect conditions for authoritarianism, Bay contends that democratic decline from epistemic arrogance must be met with epistemic humility. He calls for a cultural shift toward greater acceptance of other people’s reality perceptions and proposes an ethics of pluralist realities – a plureality. It begins with those who control the media platforms as well as media users committing to a more ethical media conduct. "By fostering a more empathetic, less normative analysis, Bay delivers a kind of palliative clarion call to advocate for more pluralistic democratic society." - David Craig, Associate Professor at USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and author of Apocalypse Television "Bay has hit the nail upon the proverbial head: We need to rethink media before we can rethink democracy." - Aram Sinnreich, Professor at American University and author of The Secret Life of Data: Navigating Hype and Uncertainty in the Age of Algorithmic Surveillance Morten Bay teaches courses on media, technology, and society at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. He holds a PhD from UCLA and has covered the media and technology industries as a journalist for two decades. Previously, he worked as a digital media consultant for Fortune 50 companies as well as small startups and has advised US and EU lawmakers on media and tech regulatory policy. Mediating Plureality is his fourth book on how media technologies influence human life and the first written solely for an academic audience.

The conference covers all aspects of knowledge discovery from data, with a strong focus on graph learning and knowledge graph, including algorithms, software, platforms. "Cambridge Forum on AI: Culture & Society" has recently been founded by its acting editors-in-chief Tobias Blanke and Georgina Born. It is fully Open Access and CUP will not charge any APCs. And here is the call description: "In recent years, AI has become a central force in shaping various aspects of human life, ranging from decision-making over cultural production to societal infrastructures, sparking wide-ranging ethical debates. However, classical approaches to AI ethics often rely on abstract principles and Western-centric perspectives that may overlook the lived experience of those directly and even indirectly affected by AI systems. This themed issue seeks to address these issues by focusing on empirical approaches to AI ethics, which ground ethical reflection on concrete practices, values, and experiences. Empirical AI Ethics continues the so-called empirical turn in epistemology, the humanities and beyond by connecting insights gained through qualitative and quantitative research with value considerations. The analytical focus thereby shifts from a focus on top-down ethical principles to understanding what different actors and stakeholders consider desirable and undesirable practices, whether at the individual, societal or institutional level. Dear all, We will be hosting a hybrid workshop on Advancing Post-growth HCI at CHI’25, and we invite you to participate! ———————————————————— This hybrid workshop in three phases—online sessions (~90 min) weeks prior and after an on-site session at CHI'25—seeks to advance conversations around Post-growth HCI by inviting researchers, designers, and practitioners to co-reflect on the impact of growth patterns in HCI and co-devise strategies to resist their influence. Sessions will be self-contained but in dialogue with each other, ensuring that participants can engage meaningfully by attending either or all components of the workshop. The online sessions will support greater participation from people across time zones and those concerned about the environmental, financial, or other costs of travel. We encourage interested participants to submit a 300-500 word reflection in a single-column ACM template on how growth manifests in (or in their work in) HCI, along with an accompanying artifact (e.g., a photograph, poem, excerpt, or rough sketch) that illustrates what post-growth means or does not mean to them. Submissions should be made by February 13, 2025, through the form linked on our workshop website. The concept of the ‘data gaze’ helps to understand how everyday life is viewed through data ‘in ever more forensic, strategic, predictive, and knowing ways’ (Beer 2018, p.25). In this presentation we present preliminary theorising from a range of projects to explore different dimensions of the data gaze where the classificatory logics of algorithmic and machinic gazes intersect with (and sometimes cross over) with young people’s own capacities to see and know themselves. Careful curation of images and content is an increasingly common-sense way for young people to negotiate the intense pressures of visibility in a digitally-networked world. This context requires developing ever-finer capacities to differentiate and classify images and individuals. Drawing from a study of young people’s selfie editing practices, we discuss the image-reading and classificatory systems young people use. This provides new understandings of how normalising logics of visibility and popularity shape how young people view themselves, their peers, and the world around them. We use the ‘data gaze’ to examine how young people critically engage with the with digital platforms central to their daily lives; and to also critically examine how platforms function to extract data and value from young people’s everyday practices. We ask: how are young people imagined by this data gaze? How does the data gaze inform their own practices, subjectivities, and orientations to their lives? *Bios* Julia Coffey is Associate Professor in Sociology at University of Newcastle, Australia. Her research focuses on youth and gender, with particular interests in feminism, embodiment and body work practices; and how bodies and identity is mediated through digital technologies and environments. She currently leads an Australian Research Council Discovery Project exploring young people's digital presentation and image-editing practices. She is on the editorial boards of Journal of Youth Studies, Qualitative Research, and Journal of Applied Youth Studies. She is the author of Body Work: Youth, Gender and Health (Routledge) and edited or coauthored titles Learning Bodies(Springer, with Helen Cahill and Shelley Budgeon), Youth Sociology (Red Globe Press, with Steve Roberts, Alan France and Cathy Waite) and Gender in an Age of Post-truth Populism (Bloomsbury, with Penny Jane Burke, Rosalind Gill and Akane Kanai. Her latest book is Everyday Embodiment: Rethinking Youth Body Image (2021, Palgrave Macmillan). Steven Threadgold is Associate Professor of Sociology the Director of the Newcastle Youth Studies Centre at University of Newcastle, Australia. His research focuses on youth and class, with particular interests in unequal and alternative work and career trajectories; underground and independent creative scenes; cultural formations of taste, and financial practices. Steve an Associate Editor of Journal of Youth Studies, and on the Editorial Boards of The Sociological Review, DIY, Alternative Culture & Society, and Journal of Applied Youth Studies. His latest book is Bourdieu and Affect: Towards a Theory of Affective Affinities (Bristol University Press). Youth, Class and Everyday Struggles (Routledge) won the 2020 Raewyn Connell Prize for best first book in Australian sociology. His latest edited collection with Jessica Gerrard is Class in Australia.
