Problems for pseudonym in online identity study

Hello All, I am a Masters student in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature working on my thesis. However, I have encountered a problem on the use of pseudonyms. The site of my study is on a online forum-based interactive gaming site, and I am focusing on how the forum-based (text) role players negotiate various identities through their language use. Therefore, my participants have multiple layers of identities and names -- real name, screen name, and names of the characters they created. To ensure the confidentiality of the participants, of course I will use pseudonyms when presenting their real names and screen names in my thesis. But I am not sure if I should use pseudonyms to replace the names of the characters that my participants create, as those names sometimes have more profound meanings to them than just a name, and may signal their change in identity. Yet I am worried if I don't replace the names with pseudonyms, it may somewhat influence my participants' rights to full confidentiality. Please give me some advice as to how I can handle this issue. While it's been a few years since she wrote this, Danielle Lawson's (2004) work on consent would be appropriate for you to consider. She offers a range of options for consent: 1. consent to having their nickname and communicative text used for data analysis only (no publication of name or text); 2. consent to having either their nickname or text published in an academic work, but never together (i.e., no identifiers); 3. consent to having either their nickname or text published in an academic work, but never together (i.e., no identifiers) and providing they get to see the ‘write up’ prior to publication; 4. consent to having both their nickname and text published in academic work, thereby being credited as the authors of their own words; or 5. consent to having both their nickname and text published in academic work, thereby being credited as the authors of their own words, providing they get to see the ‘write up’ prior to publication (p. 93). Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies, and/or (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of symbolic interactionist approaches and concepts, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Those contemplating entering should note that an interactionist approach demands thoughtful analysis, and not mere description, of human interactions. Theorizing the Web, April 14th

Hello, Just a friendly final reminder that the Theorizing the Web conference is happening this Saturday, April 14th in College Park, MD (inside the DC beltway). http://www.cyborgology.org/theorizingtheweb/ PJ Rey and myself, two graduate students, created the conference last year to provide space for more critical and theoretical approaches when researching the Web. The response has been overwhelming. We’ve built on the success of last year’s conference to create a program we are very excited about. 10 panels, a gallery filled with art installations, a film screening, and an invited discussion on social media after revolution. We’ll close the conference with a conversation between Andy Carvin of NPR News and Zeynep Tufekci (UNC) on social media, protest and journalism. Andy Carvin (@acarvin) is quite important for his innovative use of Twitter within NPR News. Curating thousands of tweets often from areas where Western journalists are not allowed, Carvin hints at a new mode of journalism positioned somewhere between the noisy torrent of social media content on the ground and the traditional news-gatekeepers we’ve grown accustomed to. Tufekci (@techsoc), who has emerged as one of the strongest academic voices on social movements and social media, will help us make sense of this important new development. The research panels take on a range of topics, including technology and protest; self-concept, self-documentation and identity; logging off and disconnection; art, code and design; augmented reality; mobile phones; knowledge and power. A variety of perspectives often neglected at technology conferences are woven throughout the program, including critical, feminist, queer, art-centered and inter/non-disciplinary perspectives on new technologies. Deen, Pulling data off is possible via DiscoverText with paid Professional or Enterprise accounts. Now we also have an API that you can use for pulling off everything (except Twitter data) including raw data, meta data, as well as human coding and machine classification scores. Under the Twitter ToS, you are permitted to "save as" .csv or XML to use teh raw data in other applications. Using the DiscoverText API, you can also get just the Twitter ID for individual tweets. Hey folks, My name's Devin Gaffney, and I'm currently over at Oxford Internet Institute doing my MSc. A while back, I was providing a service called 140kit.com, which was a site where a researcher could throw in a term, and tweets including that term would be automatically collected. At that point, you would be able to download the raw data or run our on-site analytics. Well, that ended because of two things - one, we lost a bunch of steam when Twitter disallowed raw data outputs for third parties - analytics were still fine, however. Second, our previous hosting situation, which was provided to us for free, finally fell through, and we don't have money (its just me and another programmer) to pour into this thing.
