using social media short course
by Holly Kruse 23 Feb '12

23 Feb '12

I'm teaching a two-week long intersession short course called "Using Social Media" during spring intersession, and I'd love some ideas for assignments and topics to cover. It's not an online course. I've taught much more theoretical, historical, etc. semester-long courses on digital media/CMC, but this class is meant to be quite applied. I'm having the students read Nancy Baym's Personal Connections in the Internet Age and Clay Shirky's Here Comes Everybody, and the students will write a paper, but I need to fill three hours a day for two weeks, so any suggestions are most welcome! Re: [Air-L] software for online ethnography (Ashley Hinck)
by Jason Zalinger 22 Feb '12

Hi Ashley, I have struggled with this question a lot, and I don't think there is one solution. I would include Zotero <http://www.zotero.org/> to the list of programs already mentioned. I use it for more than just bibliographic management. You can save snapshots of sites to it, make notes, save pdfs etc. I'm also going to use this opportunity to shamelessly plug a chapter I recently published about an instant messenger program designed for ethnographers. Call For Papers CSAA 2012 - Materialities: Economies, Empiricism, & Things
by Catherine Driscoll 21 Feb '12

21 Feb '12

Cultural Studies Association of Australasia annual conference 2012 Hosted by the Department of Gender & Cultural Studies, University of Sydney Dec 4th-6th (pre-fix pre-conference Dec 3rd) ‘Materialities: Economies, Empiricism, & Things’ Organising committee: Fiona Allon, Prudence Black, Catherine Driscoll, Elspeth Probyn, Kane Race& Guy Redden. Call for Papers Cultural studies has a long history of investigating material practices – indeed it was a founding tenet of British cultural studies – but recently a new turn or return to materialism seems to be emerging in the field. What this materiality now means is still open, but we suggest that it flags a renewed interest in questions of how to study cultural objects, institutions and practices (methods), what constitutes matter and materiality (empiricism), and how things (humans and non-humans) are being reworked at a time of global economic, environmental and cultural flux. Our keynotes haveall directed critical attention to these questions – to the more-than-human, to new philosophies of matter, to the gendered material and economic circuits of media, and to ‘the heavy materiality of language’. We have invited them to help us in reinvigorating what cultural studies can do today. They include: Ross Chambers (Michigan), Katherine Gibson (UWS), Lesley Head (UoW), Bev Skeggs (Goldsmiths, London), and Sarah Whatmore (Oxford). We encourage proposed panels and individual papers that engage with the wide spectrum of issues flagged by our title, including submissions that focus on: · the crossing of science studies and cultural studies; · questions of method; ·the relation between culture and economy; · cultural histories of objects and forms; · new ideas about empiricism; · placing sexuality, gender and race within the more-than-human; · the materiality of texts and genres; · the future and the past of material cultural studies; · environmental humanities and changing ecologies; · cultural studies within the anthropocene; ·cultural relations with/in primary and natural resources; · the new materiality of globalism Papers and panels not focusing on the theme are also welcome. Please send submissions to csaa.2012(a)gmail.com by August 24th and include your name and affiliation. Abstracts for papers should be 250-300 words. Panel submissions must include three individual abstracts, a panel title and 100-150 word rationale for the panel as a whole. We will advise all proposers of accepted papers within 4 weeks of this deadline. Please note that accepted presenters will need to register before their paper will be scheduled in the program. There will also be a separate event, “Pre-Fix”, geared to the needs of postgraduates and early career researchers, on December 3rd. Details of this and the main conference will be on a dedicated conference website soon. New EU project on mobile solutions for migrants integration
by Stefano Kluzer 21 Feb '12

21 Feb '12

Dear all: Maseltov (www.maseltov.eu/) is a new FP7 ICT project just started (January 2012), due to last for 3 years. It will develop and test mobile-based applications/services designed to support migrants in Europe (so called Third Country nationals) and those working with/for them (migrants associations, NGOs, service providers etc.) in addressing the challenges of integration (see below). Maseltov will target disadvantaged segments of the migrant population, to be jointly identified with the three NGO partners in London, Madrid and Graz (Austria). Maseltov's solutions will focus on three critical needs/domains -learning/skilling; information assistance; social networking and community participation- with a special attention to enhancing migrants' employability, which is a crucial condition for integration. In the first step of the project, we are gathering information on existing projects and initiatives in Europe and elsewhere which have been addressing the above issues and target groups, and where mobile devices and ICT in general can be seen to play an important role. We undertake this initial research step, because we would like to know better what has been done already and especially the lessons learnt that could help us in the new project. If you have any suggestions in this respect (and links to online resources and websites, people to contact etc.), please just send them to me. Thank you in advance for any help and best regards, Stefano Kluzer http://it.linkedin.com/in/stefanokluzer

Research on the effects of the Digital Divide/Digital Inequality
by roderick graham 21 Feb '12

21 Feb '12

All: I am currently working on a manuscript exploring how African Americans are using new media. Whenever discussions of inequality and new media/ICTs come up - the "Digital Divide", African Americans are usually cast as one of the more disadvantaged groups. However, I cannot find research that shows the effects of this disadvantage. Has anyone come across any research that shows empirically the consequences of the digital divide for African Americans? It also gives conference attendees a forum where they can learn about novel research projects and posters presenters with a chance to receive comments from knowledgeable sources. Dear Colleagues, It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the IFLA Presidential meeting on a topic of growing importance and interest in the world of culture and information: Indigenous Knowledges: Local priorities, Global contexts. This international meeting will be held in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 12-14 April 2012 at the First Nations House of Learning on the campus of the University of British Columbia. This meeting will be the opportunity for all those interested in Indigenous and traditional knowledge, its creation, organization and access, to better understand the local and global issues under discussion in various parts of the world and by many types of cultural, heritage, and community groups and organizations. The program includes distinguished speakers from around the world representing many viewpoints and interests. Through the sharing of knowledge and experiences, we hope to advance the understanding of traditional knowledge at both the local and international levels. The results will inform the development of legal instruments, policies and practices related to the organization of Indigenous and traditional knowledge around the world. This meeting will be an exciting and moving experience for all participants. As the IFLA President I look forward to welcoming you to Vancouver. Ingrid Parent, University Librarian and IFLA President PURPOSE OF THE MEETING Indigenous communities and organizations operating within the world knowledge economy have particular needs and aspirations, but often also have the additional need to reconcile developing international systems with traditional community-based practices surrounding knowledge and its development, preservation, transmission, and protection. Negotiations of the relationship between traditional and world systems can be technically complex, but also occur within social and political contexts in which relations of power are rarely equal, and are increasingly mediated by local and international agreements. We are all impacted by and have an interest in these negotiations and their outcomes. The IFLA 2012 Presidential Program is intended to provide IFLA, its members, and all organizations and individuals, with an investigation of these issues and guidance as to how institutions and communities can work together to develop the most useful and productive relationships. Thank you to the UBC First Nations House of Learning for their generous contribution of a beautiful setting for this event.

New Book: Understanding Digital Humanities
by David Berry 21 Feb '12

21 Feb '12

Colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to my new edited book recently published by Palgrave Macmillan (2012) called Understanding Digital Humanities. I hope you find it interesting. Best David http://www.palgrave.com/products/title.aspx?pid=493310 The application of new computational techniques and visualisation technologies in arts and humanities and the social sciences are resulting in fresh approaches and methodologies for the study of new and traditional corpora. This ‘computational turn’ takes the methods and techniques from computer science to create innovative means of close and distant reading. This book discusses the implications and applications of ‘digital humanities’ and 'computational social science' and the questions raised when using algorithmic techniques. Key researchers in the field provide a comprehensive introduction to important debates surrounding issues such as the contrast between narrative versus database, pattern-matching versus hermeneutics, and the statistical paradigm versus the data mining paradigm. Also discussed are the new forms of collaboration within arts and humanities that are raised through modular research teams and new organisational structures, ‘big humanities’, as well as techniques for interdisciplinary collaboration. Call for Papers: Community Informatics in China, a Library Trends special issue
by Brian Zelip 20 Feb '12

20 Feb '12

*Please forward to your institutions, listservs, and networks, thank you* *请在您的工作单位、邮件列表和社交网络中转发，谢谢* CALL FOR PAPERS: LIBRARY TRENDS, International Journal of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Special Issue on COMMUNITY INFORMATICS: THE CASE OF CHINA 征稿启事：《图书馆趋势》，美国伊利诺伊大学厄巴纳-香槟分校, 图书馆和信息科学研究生院国际期刊《社群信息学》专刊：中国情况研究 (THE CASE OF CHINA) Community informatics studies the use of information technology in and by local, historical, organic communities. We are concerned with IT use in civil society, by ordinary people in their everyday lives, especially in social groups. Community is a crucial object of study because we all live in communities, so we count on them being intact and cohesive. Day by day more people are using computers, cell phones, the internet and all kinds of digital devices and software. But at the same time digital divides persist and even deepen, as early adopters race ahead of newer arrivals. Other dimensions of inequality continue to contribute to social exclusion as well. To learn how our information societies can become inclusive and sustainable, we need to draw lessons from all over the world. With this issue, LIBRARY TRENDS is very pleased to take its first thorough look at community informatics and at China. The connection between libraries, library and information science, and community informatics is longstanding. Today libraries are fighting for their budgets, Facebook is the so-called community network of choice, and we need to use community informatics to examine the world critically and constructively. Proposals in English or Simplified or Traditional Chinese (<300 words) to editor Kate Williams by 15 March 2012 2012年3月15日前，请将英语、简体中文或繁体中文（少于300字）论文提要提交给编辑 Kate WILLIAMS A PDF of the complete call for papers is available at: 本次论文征集的PDF说明文档，可通过以下网页获取： http://people.lis.illinois.edu/~katewill/cfplt.pdf ftp://ciinchina:pkuiuc2012@ciinchina.35free.net/cfplt.pdf
