CfP: International Workshop on Complex Social Network Analysis (CSNA 2012)
by Luca Rossi 24 Feb '12

24 Feb '12

It is our pleasure to invite you to submit your recent work to the International Workshop on Complex Social Network Analysis (CSNA 2012) that is held as a part of the International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2012), 26-29 August, 2012, Kadir Has University, Istanbul, Turkey. Workshop Web Site: http://www.zsi.pwr.wroc.pl/CSNA2012 Submission Site: https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=csna2012 *New* submission Deadline: May 7, 2012. Proceedings published by IEEE. One of the reasons behind the tremendous success of Social Network Analysis (SNA) methods in various research disciplines is a very general and simple graph model that enables representation and study of extremely heterogeneous scenarios, ranging from workplace dynamics to the spreading of diseases or hyper-text documents in the World Wide Web. All these examples can be in fact modeled as homogeneous sets of nodes connected pairwise by some kind of edges. Commonly, each two nodes (social entities) are linked by a single edge (connection, link, bind, arc, tie), which, in turn, can be either undirected or directed, weighted or unweighted. While this generality still constitutes a great value, recently, it has become apparent that to model specific contexts and to enable accurate analyses it may be important to enrich the simple network models with more complex modeling constructs. A typical example is a multi-layer (called also multi-layered, multi-modal or multidimensional) network, where nodes are connected to each other through different kinds of links and each such a kind corresponds to a single layer. Each layer can refer either to a different type of relationship (sociological approach: friendship / family ties / collaboration at work) or to a different type of user common activities (computer science approach: email exchange / commenting the same photo / usage of the same tags). Besides, in many domains and environments, we can extract more than one type of nodes - it means that a social network may be heterogeneous (multi-modal) rather than homogeneous. For example, we can have teacher-nodes (one type-mode) mixed with student-nodes (another type-mode) or we can distinguish different user accounts registered in a number of services, e.g. various online games. Both multi-layer(ed) and heterogeneous (multi-modal) networks can be generalized to simple networks extended with labels (types, classes, modes, layers, levels) assigned either to edges or nodes. This concept also covers spatial networks where nodes and edges are annotated (labeled) with their location. Temporal (dynamic) social networks expand this model by introduction of timestamps assigned to nodes or edges; its disparate feature is the fixed order among following snapshots. Looking at current mainstream online social networks, we can easily see the relevance of these models: notable examples are Google+ circles, defining different kinds of social ties, users having multiple accounts in different web 2.0 services like Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, as well as Twitter conversations where messages are exchanged at precise timestamps and sometimes from the known locations. We refer to these enriched networks as complex social networks. The objective of this workshop is to provide a venue to discuss the latest advances on complex social network analysis, mining and applications. Contributions coming from several fields, including computer science and social sciences, are welcome. The scope of the workshop includes (but is not limited to) the following topics: Data models for complex social networks Multi-layer(ed) networks Multi-modal social networks Multidimensional social networks Spatial networks Temporal analysis on social networks Dynamics modeling and measures for social networks Homogeneous social networks Statistical modeling of complex social networks Patterns in complex social networks Complex social network mining Cross-sectional analysis in social networks Measures for complex social networks and algorithms for their calculation Dynamics and evolution patterns of complex social networks Algorithms for large-scale complex social networks Merging social networks User identification / unification in multiple-system social networks Applications of complex social network analysis Community discovery in complex social networks (multi-layered / multi-modal / heterogeneous communities) Visual representation of complex networks and complex online social phenomena Data protection in location-based networks Methodological problems in complex social network studies Data mining in social networking sites Social Networks with Uncertainty *New* important dates: May 7, 2012 - Full paper submission deadline June 7, 2012 - Notification of acceptance June 15, 2012 - Camera-ready paper due and presenting author registration due August 26-29, 2012 - Conference, the workshop is scheduled on the first day of the ASONAM conference (August 26, 2012) Przemyslaw Kazienko (Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland) Matteo Magnani (Aarhus University, Denmark) Luca Rossi (University of Urbino "Carlo Bo", Italy) -- -- Luca Rossi LaRiCA - Advanced Communication Laboratory Faculty of Sociology - "Carlo Bo" University, Urbino luca.rossi(a)uniurb.it T. +39 0722 305726 F. +39 0722 305727 http://larica.uniurb.it/redline

Potential Panel - for #ir13
by Light Ben 24 Feb '12

24 Feb '12

Hi all, I have some colleagues back at Salford, who I work with on two projects – involving audience engagement via digital media (one is with the London Symphony Orchestra and one with the Imperial War Museum – both in the UK). We were thinking of submitting some of that work to the conference and I suggested that maybe it might be worth thinking about putting in a panel proposal around Digital Media and Arts and Cultural Organizations. I won't be part of the panel, since I'll be busy organising! However, if anyone is interested maybe in joining in on something like this – could you give me a shout and we will see if we can put something together? Oh the colleagues are Garry Crawford, Gaynor Bagnall and Vic Gosling! If you wanted to find out more about the projects visit: http://www.nesta.org.uk/areas_of_work/creative_economy/digital_rnd http://digitalrndfund.wordpress.com/ Very best wishes, Ben Ben Light Associate Dean - Research and Innovation College of Arts and Social Sciences Professor of Digital Media School of Media, Music and Performance University of Salford | Maxwell Building Salford | M5 4WT | UK Tel. +44 161 295 5443 | Twitter @doggyb | www.benlight.org

software for online ethnography
by Ashley Hinck 24 Feb '12

24 Feb '12

Hi all, Does anyone have a recommendation for software to use for online ethnography? I'm looking for something to organize artifacts from a variety of sources, including websites, tumblrs, forums, tweets, interviews, etc. I don't necessarily need the software to help me analyze data, but need something to help manage artifacts from a variety of sources. I've been following the discussion of how best to archive websites, but I was wondering if there might be software that can integrate data from multiple platforms. I'm trying to construct an archive of the online communication of a particular community that uses multiple platforms. Any help would be much appreciated. =) -Ashley -- Ashley Hinck Teaching Assistant and PhD Student in Rhetoric Communication Arts Department The University of Wisconsin-Madison

Respondent needed for NCA panel
by Kris M. Markman 24 Feb '12

24 Feb '12

Colleagues, A graduate student in my department is organizing a panel proposal on online communities to be submitted to the African American Culture & Communication Division of NCA for the 2012 conference in Orlando. She is looking for a respondent for the panel. The panel title is “Online COMMunties: D.I.Y. from Beauty to Justice." From the rationale: "Online communities have become, for some people, a way of life or a way to supplement the lives they live. The members of this panel will share four very different ways online communities function to help individuals receive and mete out justice, talk about breast cancer, deal with their grief, and garner support for wearing natural hair. It is not simply the existence of these communities that interests communication scholars, but also how the members of these communities interact and how communication transformed blogs and sites to actual communities." If you are interested in serving as a respondent, or know someone else who might be, please contact Cicely Wilson at ctwilsn1(a)memphis.edu. Thanks for your help! -Kris ---------- ---------- ---------- Kris M. Markman, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Dept. of Communication University of Memphis www.krismarkman.com

Sematic Ambient Media (SAME 2012) @ Pervasive 2012 (Deadline 2nd March - Position Papers) - 5th International Workshop on Semantic Ambient Media Experience
by artur.lugmayr＠tut.fi 24 Feb '12

24 Feb '12

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS SAME 2012 @ Pervasive 2012 ? 5th International Workshop on Semantic Ambient Media Experience (SAME 2012) The Seventh Sense! Feel, Touch, Listen, Smell ? Unobtrusive Semantic Ambient No-Screen Media 18th June 2012 - in conjunction with Pervasive 2012 Newcastle, UK ******* UPCOMING DEADLINE: 2nd March 2012 - position paper min. pages (!) ******* http://www.ambientmediaassociation.org/same2012 Special Theme 2012: Unobtrusive Semantic Ambient Media Beyond the Screen and Pixels Creating the business value, vision, media theories and technology for ambient media ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SAME 2012 The medium is the message! In the age of ubiquitous and pervasive computation, where the information through a distributed interlinked network of devices, the question, ?what is content in the age of ambient media?? becomes more and more of importance. Ambient media are embedded throughout the natural environment of the consumer ? in his home, in his car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant example services are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. Today the screen ? touchscreen, mobile phone displays, or LCD displays seem to be the main modality for consuming and interacting with media. However, the main challenge for ambient media is to ?render? the digital world in the natural environment, augment the world around us, and to bring the digital world into the real physical world. The plethora of interactivity becomes a modality for connecting the physical world to the digital overlay and an interaction with physical objects triggering actions in the digital domain. Today, the main device for interaction is the screen and the display ? what about no-screen, no-keyboard, no-mouse media? Current developments as e.g. fluid interfaces, displays beyond mobile phone and PC screens, gadgets for gaming, and outside media products show us that no-screen, no-keyboard, and no-mouse media are possible. The distribution of the medium throughout the natural environment implies a paradigm change of how to think about content. Until recently, content was identified as single entities to information ? a video stream, audio stream, TV broadcast and a screen as display device. However, in the age of ambient media, the notion of content extends from the single entity thinking towards a plethora of sensor networks, smart devices, personalized services, and media embedded in the natural environment of the user. New technologies render traditional screen, keyboard, and mouse concepts obsolete. The user actively participates and co-designs media experience with his location based input. Initiatives as the smart Web considering location-based tagging for web-pages underline this development. Within the scope of this workshop we solely focus on no-screen, no-keyboard, no-mouse based semantic media applications; semantic media applications that can be touched, listened to, felt, smelt. WORKSHOP CHALLENGES The workshop aims at answering the following questions for applications, methods, techniques, and installations that follow the no-screen, no-keyboard, and no-mouse device idea: - How to select, compose, and generate ambient content including a no-screen concept? - How to present ambient content with no-screens? - How to re-use ambient content and learning experiences without utilizing screens or traditional I/O devices?- - What are the characteristics of ambient media, its content, and technology when traditional I/O devices are not utilized? - How can sensor data be interpreted and intelligently mined? - How can collaborative or audience participatory content be supported? - How can existing media such as TV, home entertainment, cinema extended by ambient media? - What are ambient media in terms of story-telling and art that do not use screens? - How do ambient media create business and value and how can ambient media be integrated into business processes and strategies? - Which methods for experience design, prototyping, and business models exist? - What is interactivity between the single consumers and consumer groups in the ambient context? TOPICS OF INTEREST The following (and related) topics are within the scope of this workshop and shall act as examples: - No-screen, no-keyboard, no-mouse gadgets, devices, and hardware - No-screen applications, services, artistic installations, and cases - No-screen application areas: eCommerce, gaming, social media, traditional media, eLearning, etc. - Interactive storytelling, narrations, and interactive advertising - Interaction models, consumer experience, and usability - Unobtrusive semantic ambient media - Algorithms, methods, and techniques supporting no-screen ambient media - Business processes, value-creation, and opportunities of no-screen ambient media - Semantics, and intelligence of ambient content in daily objects not utilizing screen, keyboard, and mouse - Mobile and stationary sensor data collection and interpretation algorithms and techniques - Context awareness and collection and context aware composition/selection - Creation and maintenance of meta-information including metadata and data management - Ambient and mobile social networks, user generated content, and co-creation of content and products - Characteristics of no-screen ambient media, its content, and technological platforms - No-screen ambient content creation techniques, asset management, and programming ambient media - Algorithms and techniques for semantic sensor data interpretation supporting no-screen media - Applications and services, including ambient games, art and leisure content in specific contexts - Personalization, user models, multimodal interaction, smart user interfaces, and universal access - Experience design, usability, audience research, ethnography, user studies, and interface design - Business models, marketing studies, media economics, and ?x?-commerce of no-screen media - Ambient no-screen, no-keyboard, no-mouse interfaces (touch, gesture, haptics, biometrics) - Management of information, knowledge and sapience in the context of semantic no-screen ambient media - Methods for context awareness, sensor networks, and sensor data mining - Semantic data mining and text mining for no-screen media - Semantic models, semantic interpretation for no-screen ambient media presentation - Personalization and methods for locative no-screen media in the wild We are also aiming at multidisciplinary, highly future oriented submissions that help to develop the ambient media form for entertainment services, such as: - Case-studies (successful, and especially unsuccessful ones) - Oral presentation of fresh and innovative ideas - Artistic installations and running system prototypes - User-experience studies and evaluations - Technological novelties, evaluations, and solutions TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience is researchers and practitioners in the field of ubiquitous and pervasive computation and its related areas.
