Re: [Air-L] Are 'categories' the same as 'genres'?

My colleagues and I have done a fair amount of research on web genres. You can see our papers at http://genres.syr.edu/ and a google search will turn up a number more (e.g., mini-tracks in past years at the HICSS conference). We were interested in these genres because we though it could be useful for understanding how people used the web and for supporting better information access (e.g., searching for a review vs. a purchase page for a product). But our experience with empirical studies suggests that it's a hard to use genres systematically. First, pages rarely represent what genre they represent. Second, users of web pages seem to use genre information, but often can't name the genre of a page they're looking at, and if they can say, they can't say how they know. I think we might be using a different definition of genre though: we were drawing on rhetoric and looking for genres like box score, product review, news article, organizational home page, etc. I get the sense that your definition is broader: comedy, tragedy perhaps? ipad, laptop, desktop
by Kreps David 15 Jan '12

My two penneth FWIW A salesman in the Regent St Apple Store, some years ago, did me a great service by stressing several times: "The iPad is not a Laptop". As soon as I got one I understood that it is basically just a big iPhone, without the Phone bit. But actually that makes it (in its niche) very useful indeed. I listen to the Radio in the kitchen on it. I play Words with Friends on it. I browse news via Flipboard on it. It does all my email and note taking at conferences. Evernote is there to keep quick notes on it synchronised with both my iPhone and MacAir. But the MacAir does everything else I could want and I usually have all three with me. Having been with Mac from 1988-1998 I got very used to the Mac OS. When circumstances put me onto first Win95 then 98 I felt quite poor! Win2000 & then WinXP were a bit of an improvement but the month Apple got Intel (Jan 07) I got myself a Mac again and haven't looked back. I still have Win machines - some virtual on my Mac, some on Dells or Toshibas, but my preferred environment is again the various incarnations of the Mac OS. Apple have not paid me for my opinion lol ============== Dr David Kreps Director, Information Systems, Organisations and Society Research Centre University of Salford http://www.business.salford.ac.uk/staff/davidkreps Sent from my iPad - apols for brevity and/or typos

Hi everybody. I'm writing a paper about research methodologies for studying Youtube. Mine is just a review about different approaches used (ethnographic, survey, ....) but I'd like to focus automatic data collection strategies. Do you have some suggestions about essays/papers (theoretical or case study) on this topic?? Thank you in advance for any kind of help. Understanding Sequencing in Social Network Communications
by Barry Wellman 15 Jan '12

15 Jan '12

Just published by Mo, Guang Ying and me in Bulletin de Methode Sociologique (a Sage journal), number 113 (Jan 2012). Abstract: Sequencing is an indispensable decision-making process during information flows. This paper proposes the conceptualization of sequencing to understand how and why information senders prioritize some network members when they communicate with others. We examine the usefulness of this conceptualization with data collected from GRAND, a scholarly network. The concept of sequencing enables researchers to explore the decision-making process that occurs prior to information flows and link individuals behavior to the social context. I'm sure Mo would be delighted to send you reprints: oliviamo(a)hotmail.com Barry Wellman _______________________________________________________________________ S.D. Lisa, I really haven't had any problem with the setup. The program handles .doc formats great and I can upload and download files well on Google Docs. It will crash one in a blue moon and that was a majority of the complaints. But, I normally save once every 20 minutes. As sad as this sounds, the best feature is the ability to focus on one paper at a time.
