Research on Twitter - a couple of questions
by Monica Barratt 18 Jan '12

Dear AoIR members Recently there have been more scholarly articles published using Twitter data in the health field. I've found myself as a peer-reviewer of one such article. In case the authors happen to be subscribed, I'll keep the exact topic quiet... but basically what the authors are doing is using Twitter's advanced search function to compile a database of Tweets which they then subject to a simple content analysis. I have done my own research and discussed the issue with local expert Axel Bruns, however I'm still a bit unclear on a couple of points, and wondered if anyone reading could assist me: 1. The authors draw samples of Tweets over a specific time frame from specified US cities. They appear to assume that by using the advanced search option 'Near this place' and entering the city name will bring up all tweets from that city or surrounds (see https://twitter.com/#!/search-advanced ). But wouldn't that only bring up the tweets from people who have nominated their home city or geolocated their tweets? Don't many users do neither of these things and therefore the corpus of data would be incomplete? Can anyone verify this ... and also does anyone know if there is any research on the proportion of Twitter users whose location would be known and therefore would be included in such a dataset? 2. The authors use profile images to ascertain the approximate age and gender of account holders. In my experience, many people use profile images that do not represent themselves - eg. celebrities or past images of themselves or images of themselves with others. Is this an accurate or useful way of dealing with Twitter profile data or is it too flawed as a technique to be useful? While I'm not an expert in Twitter research, it seems to me that Twitter research is on more solid ground when using a hashtag to identify a corpus of Tweets, as this is the method Twitter users employ too. Thanks for your thoughts/help Monica Research Fellow @ National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University

7TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN INTERPRETIVE POLICY ANALYSIS Dates Thursday July 5 – Saturday July 7, 2012 Location Tilburg University, the Netherlands. Inquiries to info(a)ipa2012.org Paper proposals Deadline January 31, 2012 List of Panels below Please submit through the website (500 words max.) Conference website www.ipa2012.org Theme Understanding the drama of democracy: policy work, power and transformation In the age of mediatisation, network governance, and multi level governance, all public agents, including government officials and academic experts, must now be credible next to being legally legitimated and effective. Therefore, policy work and its evaluation are not only based on formal positions and legal responsibilities but are also negotiated in policy practices by civil organizations, experts, journalists and the general public. The performative dimension of democracy is increasingly important. This challenges actors involved to cross boundaries, to learn, to transform, to deal with constantly alternating power relations, and to be perceived as authentic or trustworthy. It also challenges interpretive research to study how public actors perform in practice and suggests a need to pay attention to action-oriented and language-oriented dimensions of practice. Moreover, it raises questions about the role of interpretive research in the mediation and transformation of different meanings and creating or supporting policy learning. Programme Pre-conference Course on Interpretive Methods Wednesday the 4th of July we will organize a pre-conference course. This day-long course is intended to introduce participants – from doctoral students to more seasoned researchers – to interpretive policy analysis. COMETS 2012 - 3rd IEEE Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation - Call for Papers
by Daniele Gianni 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

(Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) ################################################################# IEEE WETICE 2012 3rd IEEE Track on Collaborative Modeling and Simulation (Comets 2012) in cooperation with AFIS (INCOSE France Chapter) MIMOS (Italian Association for M&S) CALL FOR PAPERS ################################################################# June 25-27, 2012, Toulouse (France) http://www.sel.uniroma2.it/comets12 ################################################################# # Papers Due: March 16, 2012 # Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings # by the IEEE Computer Society Press and indexed by EI. ################################################################# Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly becoming a central activity in the design of new systems and in the analysis of existing systems because it enables designers and researchers to investigate systems behavior through virtual representations. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases for the more complex models and for the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the track seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex, and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. A non–exhaustive list of topics of interest includes: * collaborative environments for M&S * collaborative Systems of Systems M&S * workflow modelling for collaborative environments and processes * agent-based M&S * collaborative distributed simulation * collaborative component-based M&S * net-centric M&S * web-based M&S * model sharing and reuse * model building and evaluation * modeling and simulation of business processes * modeling for collaboration * simulation-based performance evaluation of collaborative networks * model-driven simulation engineering * domain specific languages for the simulation of collaborative environments * domain specific languages for collaborative M&S * databases and repositories for M&S * distributed virtual environments * virtual research environment for M&S * collaborative DEVS M&S To stimulate creativity, however, the track maintains a wider scope and invites interested researchers to present contributions that offer original perspectives on collaboration and M&S. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ On-Line Submissions and Publication +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CoMetS'12 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications and trends in the track research area. This year, we will accept submissions in two forms: (1) papers (2) poster and industrial presentations (1) Papers should contain original contributions not published or submitted elsewhere. Papers up to six pages (including figures, tables and references) can be submitted. Papers should follow the IEEE format, which is single spaced, two columns, 10 pt Times/Roman font. All submissions should be electronic (in PDF) and will be peer-reviewed by at least three program committee members. Accepted full papers will be included in the proceedings and published by the IEEE Computer Society Press (IEEE approval pending). Please note that at least one author for each accepted paper should register to attend WETICE 2012 (http://www.wetice.org) to have the paper published in the proceedings. (2) Posters should describe a practical, on-the-field, experience in any domain area using collaborative M&S. The poster submission requires the submission of an abstract for evaluation from the organizers. Accepted abstract must be followed by the submission of a poster which will be displayed at conference time. With the poster submission, a short (15 minutes) slot might be allocated for oral presentation illustrating the industrial case. The presentation may also include a live demo, but it should not include commercial details. Interested authors and participants may contact the organizers for expression of interests and content appropriateness at any time. Papers and posters can be submitted in PDF format at the submission site (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=comets2012) which is supported by the EasyChair conference management system. CFP: Digital crossroads - Media, Migration and Diaspora in a Transnational Perspective - Abstract deadline extended to January 31st
by Leurs, K.H.A. (Koen) 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

Please circulate the following CFP: NB. Abstract Deadline extended Digital Crossroads: Media, Migration and Diaspora in a Transnational Perspective Conference 28-30 June, 2012, Utrecht, the Netherlands A kind reminder for everyone interested, please send your 300-word abstracts for papers or 500-word panel proposals for 3 to 4 presentations by January 31st 2012. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Apologies for cross-posting* CALL FOR PAPERS: Digital Crossroads: Media, Migration and Diaspora in a Transnational Perspective Conference website: http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl<http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl/><http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl%3chttp//www.digitalcrossroads.nl/%3E>. Conference 28-30 June, 2012, Utrecht, the Netherlands Deadline for abstract submission and panel proposals: January 10, 2012 Conference chair: Sandra Ponzanesi Conference coordinator: Fadi Hirzalla Because of the disjunctive and unstable interplay of commerce, media, national policies, and consumer fantasies, ethnicity, once a genie contained in the bottle of some sort of locality (however large), has now become a global force, forever slipping in and through the cracks between states and borders - Appadurai 1996, p. 41, Modernity at Large Keynote speakers: Shakuntala Banaji London School of Economics and Political Science, UK Kirsten Drotner University of Southern Denmark, Denmark Radhika Gajjala Bowling Green State University, USA Eva Lam University of Northwestern, USA Lisa Nakamura University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA Liesbet van Zoonen Loughborough University, UK and Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands The rapid development of digital technologies has radically transformed ways of keeping in touch with home cultures and diasporic networks. Moreover, the notion of migration has undergone significant shifts, coming to signify imaginaries on the move which are not necessarily linked to geographical displacement. The aim of this conference is to address the relationship between migration and digital technologies across national contexts and ethnic belonging. Migrancy embeds many of the local and global paradoxes that also pertain to digital media with their compression of space and time. However, the link between the two fields is still under-theorized and in need of more situated and comparative analysis. Drawing from approaches from the humanities and social sciences (media theory, communication studies, learning sciences, gender studies, cultural studies, postcolonial theory, migration and transnational studies, among others), the primary aim of this conference is to explore how the study of digitalization and migration challenges existing notions of diaspora, identity, nation, family, learning, literacy, social networks, youth, body, gender and ethnicity, asking for new approaches and a rethinking of traditional social and cultural categories. The conference will consider the following questions, among others: How has the development of new digital technologies changed the experience of migration? Conversely, how has the reality of migration impacted on the use, development and distribution of new media technologies? How does the use of media differ among different migrant generations? How does media literacy impact on issues of integration and socialization in a hosting country? What are the differences in media access, diffusion and use among different migrant communities across the world? How are race, gender, age, class, ethnicity and other markers of identity recodified online? How are transnational relationships and resources arrayed in networks? How do ideas and practices move across these networks? How is the notion of home or community, which is no longer locatable with a "here" and "there" reconceptualised through digital diasporas? How do these developments impact on the spaces for learning and education, which are no longer limited to place-based classrooms and curricula? How can learning processes and networks be conceptualised when these networks expand larger geographical distances, and multiple communities are crossed? What resources of identity do migrants draw on and how are these resources hybridized in practice, and related to their learning and socialization processes? In short, how are digital crossroads created, distributed and experienced in the context of migration, diaspora and transnationalism? The conference will explore three inter-related strands of the relationships between media and migration: Identity and diaspora (Strand 1) - identity and performativity - gender, race, ethnicity, religion and online communities - digital borders, digital diasporas - imagined communities, transnationalism and mobility - digital divides (generational, access, skills, user-generated content) - cultural industry, participatory culture and social media Migrant networks (Strand 2) - mediated spatialities - relations between online and offline worlds - affinity networks and intimacy - media literacy and migration - comparative perspectives on digital media practices Learning in a globalized world (Strand 3) - informal learning in the digital space - network approaches to learning - immigrant learning - globalization and learning - learning & identity - socialization in transnational families Please send 300-word abstracts for papers or 500-word panel proposals for 3 to 4 presentations by January 31st 2012. Submission should be made online via http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl<http://www.digitalcrossroads.nl%3chttp//www.digitalcrossroads.nl/%3E> See further submission instructions on the website. Notification of acceptance will be given by 20 February, 2012. For more information or questions please send an e-mail to info(a)digitalcrossroads.nl<mailto:info@digitalcrossroads.nl>. CFP: CyberOrient - “The Net Worth of the Arab Spring”
by Vit Sisler 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

**apologies for cross posting** “The Net Worth of the Arab Spring” Call for Papers - Special Issue CyberOrient: Online Journal of the Virtual Middle East Editor-in-Chief: Daniel Martin Varisco Guest Editor: Ines Braune Submission deadline: 31 May 2012 Aim As the first anniversary of the “Arab Spring” nears, several long-standing dictators have been toppled, protests still continue in other countries and new governments are being formed. Arguably, throughout this last year digital media have played an important, if not defining, role through Twitter, Facebook, blogs and the extensive news coverage in cyberspace. This is a call for papers across disciplines aiming for critical and evidence-based evaluation of the use of social media in the Arab Spring, the coverage of the Arab Spring in cyberspace and beyond, and the remediation and appropriation between social media and traditional media outlets, including satellite TVs and the press. First-person and ethnographic accounts are welcomed, but CyberOrient welcomes contributions from any field. About CyberOrient CyberOrient (http://www.cyberorient.net/) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Middle East Section of the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. The aim of the journal is to provide research and theoretical considerations on the representation of Islam and the Middle East, the very areas that used to be styled as an “Orient”, in cyberspace, as well as the impact of the internet and new media in Muslim and Middle Eastern contexts. The articles will be published online with free access in early autumn, 2012. Submission Articles should be submitted directly to Ines Braune (ines.braune(a)uni-marburg.de) and Vit Sisler (vsisler(a)gmail.com) -- Vit Sisler, Ph.D. Charles University in Prague Faculty of Arts & Philosophy Institute of Information Science and Librarianship New Media Studies http://uisk.jinonice.cuni.cz/sisler/

Re: [Air-L] Research on Twitter - a couple of questions
by Stuart Shulman 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

We have been doing some experiments with Twitter and geospatial data. I just made a 3-minute video this morning that demonstrates the extremely limited availability of geospatial data, even in Tweets collected using the GNIP-enabled Power Track for Twitter (the full fire hose). http://www.screencast.com/t/eVrP2y2UWf This may change over time. I have recently talked to Michael Macy of Cornell, who has made strides identifying techniques for using a combination of features to peg the country of most Tweets. My sense, however, is there is much work to be done.

CFP: You, Me, User – Conference on User-Generated Culture
by Susanna Paasonen 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

Hi, Thought this might be of interest to AoIR folks! cheers, Susanna CALL FOR PAPERS You, Me, User – Conference on User-Generated Culture Friday 25, May - Saturday 26, May 2012 in Helsinki. From social media to video games and from online fan production to machinima the phenomenon of user-generated culture has secured its position in the mainstream during the last few years. This shift has resulted from the blurring boundaries between media production and consumption as well as between professional and amateur authorship. The phenomenon is claimed to be characterized by collaboration, accessibility and democratic potential. During the You, Me, User Conference we approach the user-generated culture, or in other words, multiple situations where culture becomes modified, produced and distributed through everyday practices, social and new media. The Finnish Society for Cinema Studies (SETS) invites presentations which explore the questions surrounding user-generated culture. The conference will bring together Finnish and international scholars of a wide range of relevant fields of studies. The conference will offer a chance to focus on a new and active field of study and is open to presentations from a wide spectrum. Keynote speeches are delivered by David Buckingham and Frans Mäyrä. Professor David Buckingham (Loughborough University) is a media education researcher. He is especially interested in children’s and young people’s interactions with electronic media, consumer culture and civic participation. His most recent book is The Material Child: Growing Up in Consumer Culture (2011). Professor Frans Mäyrä (University of Tampere) has focused on media culture, digital media and games. He leads an interdisciplinary research group on games study where game culture, players, their activities and gameplay experiences are approached. Hi all, Could you please recommend me any readings which deal with the design of profile registration options? I mostly look for works on gender and sexuality options in software design (mainly profile registration options on dating sites or internet affinity portals) or any analysis or the interpretation of registration options on the websites designed for sexual and gender minorities. But I will also welcome the recommendation of other works which deal with the issue in a broader sense.
