reminder: JCMC special issue on social media and communication in the workplace
by Charles Steinfield 23 Jan '12

23 Jan '12

Dear colleagues, If you are doing work related to the use of social media in organizations, please consider submitting your work to the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication's special issue on Social Media and Communication in the Workplace. The deadline for submitting papers is coming up soon - February 1, 2012. JCMC is one of the leading journals dealing with social media and other forms of computer-mediated communication. It is ISI-indexed, and makes full-text available online giving it a wide reach. It has been published continuously since 1995 and in 2010 ranked third among 67 communication journals and thirteenth among 76 information science and library science journals. Inquires can be sent to any of the special issue editors. Regards, Charles Steinfield, Marleen Huysman, and Paul Leonardi ---- JCMC Special Issue Call for Papers: Social Media and Communication in the Workplace Guest Editors Charles Steinfield, Michigan State University, steinfie(a)msu.edu Marleen Huysman, VU University Amsterdam, m.h.huysman(a)vu.nl Paul Leonardi, Northwestern University, leonardi(a)northwestern.edu Social media technologies have the potential to change important communication processes within organizations. As social media proliferate, it seems likely that organizational members will use them to carry out socialization, identification, collaboration, innovation, relationship development, persuasion, learning, social capital formation, and knowledge sharing processes. The explosive growth of these technologies has not gone unnoticed by communication and information scholars, as evidenced by the equally rapid growth in articles related to the uses and impacts of social media, including a prior special issue on social network sites here in JCMC (vol. 13, no. 1, 2007). Much of this prior work has been conducted among student populations or in the context of advertising and marketing, and, as such, has not focused on social media use in organizations. Studies that do take the organization into account, generally relate to such fields as information systems marketing, and strategic management, with the aim of understanding how social media can be leveraged to enhance business performance. Less well studied, however, is the influence of social media on a range of organizational communication processes within workplace contexts. Focus of the Special Issue We invite submissions to a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication focusing on research on social media within the organizational context. Our aim is to highlight research that explores how the affordances of social media interact with organizational contexts, behaviors, and communication practices to influence processes of interest to organizational scholars. We are interested in submissions that enable us to better understand how social media affordances make a difference in workplace settings. Affordances are the result of the intertwining of capabilities provided by the technologies and the actions taken by the actors using them. Papers are especially welcome that integrate the material aspects of the technology with its use in organizational communication processes. Submissions that focus on such topics as the role of social media in attracting customers or influencing sales will be given less priority as these topics are extensively covered in other outlets. We are intentionally not providing a definition of social media in this call for papers, but ask authors to do so within their manuscripts. We encourage authors to be explicit about what it is about the media they are studying that makes them "social" and to provide definitions that are robust enough to endure over time. We encourage diverse methodological approaches, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Conceptual papers as well as empirical studies are welcome. All papers must be theoretically motivated. Submission Process and Author Guidelines Papers will undergo an initial screening by the three special issue editors in an accelerated review process. A set of selected papers will then be invited for submission to the JCMC system and will undergo a formal review led by the special issue editors in conjunction with JCMC reviewers. Submissions should follow JCMC formatting guidelines available at the journal site (http://www.wiley.com/bw/submit.asp?ref=1083-6101) and should be sent via email to the special issue editors by February 1, 2012. Initial screening decisions will be completed by March 15, 2012, and selected papers must be submitted to the JCMC system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcmc by April 15, 2012. Final acceptance decisions will be completed by July 15, 2012.

Dear AoIRists, My PhD student Barbara Gligorijevic is currently conducting a survey on the use of product ratings and recommendations sites in making purchasing decisions about digital technology products. We would very much like to encourage you to participate; it would be great if you could pass on the survey details to your friends, colleagues, and students as well. Participants who choose to leave their email details will have the chance to win a prize ! The survey is located at: http://bit.ly/qutsurvey More details: Have you recently purchased or do you plan to purchase a digital technology product - such as a personal computer, laptop, tablet, mobile phone, digital camera, game console, MP3 player, TV, or DVD player? Have you recently visited product reviews and ratings sites, or sites of manufacturers and retailers of digital technology products? If so, we are interested in your views. We are investigating how users of digital technology products use reviews and ratings sites to search for information about products, and how these sites impact on purchasing decisions. We would like to invite you to contribute to our online survey. Background and disclaimer: The survey is completely anonymous and your name will not be connected to your identity. The questionnaire is in no way linked to you personally or your e-mail address. The data collected is safely stored and only the researcher has direct access to it. ICTs and minority communities research - reports available online
by Tsatsou P. 23 Jan '12

23 Jan '12

Dear colleagues, Please forward to interested parties. Apologies for cross-posting. Many thanks. Panayiota Dr. Panayiota Tsatsou Swansea University Singleton Park Swansea SA2 8PP Tel: +44 (0) 1792 602987 Fax: +44 (0) 1792 295716 Email: p.tsatsou(a)swansea.ac.uk http://www.swan.ac.uk/staff/academic/artshumanities/pcs/tsatsoup/ http://www.wiserd.ac.uk/research/cc/ http://www.newport.ac.uk/research/researchcentres/Institutes/iab/projects/P… .................... Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use and connectivity of minority communities in Wales - Research by academics from Swansea University, Cardiff University and University of Glamorgan. The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded a collaboration between Swansea University, Cardiff University and the University of Glamorgan to develop a research project under the theme of Connected Communities. The work focused on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) use and connectivity of minority communities in Wales. The study was completed in October 2011 and revealed that ICTs are key to promoting community connectivity in contemporary society in Wales and that sadly minority communities are at risk of both social and digital exclusion. Dr Panayiota Tsatsou from Swansea University and her colleagues Dr Ian Stafford (Cardiff University), Prof Gary Higgs, Dr Robert Berry and Dr Richard Fry (University of Glamorgan) completed a thorough review of research evidence. Their findings revealed that there is clear anecdotal evidence that minority communities, such as ethnic communities with individual cultural and language attributes, and communities of disabled people, for example, require bespoke policy in order to fully take advantage of communication technologies and to enhance their experiential inclusion and connectivity. The evidence, however, provided in existing (mostly quantitative) research data, fails to adequately explore these issues in full and some data is both difficult to identify and access. Therefore the researchers recommended that there is a clear rationale for developing more qualitative, fine grained, community-based research in order to explore the barriers to digital inclusion and the impact of digital inclusion/exclusion within minority groups. The project coordinator, Dr Tsatsou, said, 'AHRC Connected Communities funding allowed researchers from three different Universities in Wales with specialisms in media, geography and policy research to get together and conduct a systematic review of evidence in the interdisciplinary area of communication technologies, and connectivity of minority communities. Considering the Welsh context this work aims to enhance existing understanding of the role of new technologies in connectivity and inclusion of minority groups. Key gaps were identified in knowledge of the use of technologies by minority groups and highlighted challenges related to accessing evidence outside of the public domain. Finally, preliminary recommendations were made regarding how research should connect with communities and stakeholders to enhance research and inform policy. The researchers envisage developing this work by undertaking, together with communities in Wales, some small-scale, qualitative and community-oriented research so as to produce original evidence'. Re: [Air-L] ipad, laptop, desktop
by Charles Ess 22 Jan '12

Two last comments - 1) Let me thank Annette for her reference to the essay by Daniel Chandler on the Phenomenology of Writing - I've now (finally) read it, and think it's terrific in many ways. Chandler's careful account of the different kinds of writers and writing techniques (from Hemingway's preference for pencil to the fluidity of composing with wordprocessors) provides a comprehensive spectrum and taxonomy for thinking about the many sorts of writings we can do, how these are shaped in part by personal style and perhaps gender, etc. - leading to a rich pluralism of possibilities for us to choose from, rather than the otherwise tempting move of asserting one modality as better than another per se (especially if it is somehow connected to more recent technologies and devices - technological determinism just doesn't want to go away, eh?) In particular, Chandler's account of how many different ways handwriting can be undertaken - and for many different ends - reminds me of a passage Naomi Baron quotes in the earlier mentioned volume: Reading is fast, but handwriting is slow it retards thought¹s due process, it consumes scupperfuls of time, it pushes every competing utterance away and that is its great virtue, in fact, over mere underlining, and even over an efficient laptop retyping of the passage: for in those secret interclausal tracts of cleared thought-space new quiet racemes will emerge from among the paving stones and foam greenly up in places they never otherwise would have prospered. -- Nicholson Baker, who ³copies out passages longhand when he wants to understand or reflect upon the words of others² (Baron 2008, 197) (Typed out for your reading and perhaps reflective pleasure on my nifty full-sized computer keyboard ...) Secondly, as regards tactility - enthusiasm for the importance of a specific feel is not restricted to pre-electric/ electronic writing tools. Consider the passion for the importance of the tactile dimension expressed by the fans of the IBM Model M Keyboards ("the best keyboard ever," as a google search will tell you). FWIW, this seems similar to the passion certain calculator enthusiasts show for the HP "voyager" series calculators (11-15) - i.e., because of the distinctive feel of the keys that, apparently, has never been duplicated, even by HP in later models, despite fervent pleas from fans. All of this is certainly, at least in part, a generational thing - but I suspect that in part it is also tied up with our being embodied beings who know and navigate the world in both overt and tacit ways (proprioceptively, as the neuroscientists tell us), such that the tactile dimensions of a given tool or technology make some difference in any event. Insofar as any of this is true, then it may be relevant for Internet research in ways that go beyond our simply sharing experiences and recommendations about good gear. In any event, in my mind the point is not, at the end of the day, to say one interface / modality is better than another. It is rather to recognize the wide range of possibilities that are available, and to make informed choices as to which we learn and take up in light of specific goals, personality styles, etc. And that's all I have to say about that ... Peace, - c. On 1/16/12 8:46 AM, "Tilton, Shane" <tiltons(a)ohio.edu> wrote: > A simple response.... > > http://www.shanetilton.com/2012/01/15/writing-from-the-ipad/ > > Sent from my iPhone >
