Histories of Public Service Broadcasters on the Web
by Niels Brügger 26 Jan '12

26 Jan '12

NEW EDITED VOLUME Histories of Public Service Broadcasters on the Web Burns, Maureen / Brügger, Niels (eds.), Peter Lang, New York, 2012 This edited volume details multiple and dynamic histories of relations between public service broadcasters and the World Wide Web. What does it mean to be a national broadcaster in a global communications environment? What are the commercial and public service pressures that were brought to bear when public service broadcasters implemented web services? How did «one-to-many» broadcasters adapt to the «many-to-many» medium of the internet? The thematic organisation of this collection addresses such major issues, while each chapter offers a particular historical account of relations between public service broadcasters and the World Wide Web. Read more about the volume at Peter Lang's website: www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?event=cmp.ccc.seitenstruktur.detailseiten&seite… Best, Niels Brügger NIELS BRÜGGER, Associate Professor, PhD Director, the Centre for Internet Research Department of Information and Media Studies Aarhus University Helsingforsgade 14 8200 Aarhus N Denmark

CFP Journal of Virtual Worlds Issue on Managerial and Commercial Applications of Virtual Worlds
by Tzafnat Shpak 26 Jan '12

26 Jan '12

Dear members, The *Journal of Virtual Worlds Research* (http://jvwresearch.org/) is happy to announce the call for this "*Managerial and Commercial Applications*" issue edited by - Shu Schiller, Wright State University, USA - Brian Mennecke, Iowa State University, USA - Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA You can access this call directly through our website<http://jvwresearch.org/index.php/component/content/article/10-cfps/27> . The Journal of Virtual Worlds Research (http://www.jvwresearch.org/) is an online, open access academic journal that engages a wide spectrum of scholarship and welcomes contributions from the many disciplines and approaches that intersect with virtual worlds research. Virtual worlds ignite a continuously evolving area of study that spans multiple disciplines and the JVWR editorial team looks forward to engaging a wide range of creative and scholarly research. *Motivation and Scope* The intriguing potential of virtual worlds has attracted a significant amount of scholarly work in the business research domain. As much as we recognize the invaluable contribution made by scholars in this area, we also see the need for more research that can offer visionary perspectives to shape the future design and use of virtual worlds. Through the business lens, virtual worlds are often perceived to be promising yet risky and exciting yet formidable for the use and management of individual and collaborative work. Scholars and practitioners are confronted with an apparent contradiction: on the one hand, the business case for virtual worlds appears to offer great promise; while on the other hand, the observed returns and demonstrable successes are often absent or negligible. This special issue on “managerial and commercial applications” of virtual worlds aims to highlight research that makes a significant and novel contribution in theory and practice about virtual worlds in the business domain. We are seeking papers that showcase new directions for research by examining technical, behavioral, economic, and/or social perspectives of virtual worlds in organizational and business environments. In particular, we are interested in papers that enable us to better understand managerial and organizational issues associated with virtual worlds and how these environments should be designed, used, and managed for commercial and managerial purposes to enhance business value. We especially welcome innovative and creative research that enables our audience to see the new possibilities offered by the unique affordances of virtual environments. Authors are invited to submit original scholarly manuscripts that will make significant contributions to the advancement of our understanding of managerial and commercial applications as it applies to virtual worlds. We encourage diverse methodological approaches and welcome both qualitative and quantitative research studies, as well as theoretical, conceptual, and empirical studies. *Possible topics include, but are not limited to:* - Novel and innovative design and development of managerial and commercial applications of virtual worlds - The use, management, and evaluation of virtual worlds in organizational settings - Individual and group behaviors in virtual worlds that are used for business purposes - Process and governance of individual and collaborative group behaviors and mechanisms in virtual worlds - The role of psychological and social attitudes and characteristics on behaviors, processes and outcomes in virtual worlds - Ethics, privacy, security, and trust issues related to virtual worlds in the business domain - Intra- and inter-organizational communication and collaboration and cultural issues in virtual worlds - Business and economic models of virtual worlds - Power and political issues related to individual, group, organizational, and societal behaviors in virtual worlds - Commercial applications and commercialization of virtual worlds technologies and environments *Submission Instructions* Authors are invited to submit original scholarly papers of up to 6000 words including footnotes, references, and appendices. Interested authors should submit a two-page extended abstract by the deadline indicated below. All submissions (abstracts and papers) should be made via the JVWR publishing system (see www.jvwreserach.org > About JVWR > For Authors). All submissions will be blind reviewed. Accepted papers will be published online in the *Volume 5, Number 3 (2012)* of the Journal. *Deadlines and Timeline* - Authors submit abstract: May 15, 2012 - Editors return comments on abstracts: May 30, 2012 - Authors submit full paper: July 1, 2012 - Editors return review report and initial decision: September 1, 2012 - Authors submit revised paper: October 1, 2012 - Editors return final comments and decision: November 1, 2012 - Authors submit final version: November 30, 2012 - Publication: December 31, 2012 *Connecting with AIS AMCIS 2012* Interested authors are welcome but not required to submit papers to the 'Virtual Communities and Virtual Worlds' Track at AMCIS 2012 (link below). Lgbtq internet use and labor migrant tech use
by Katy Pearce ucsb 25 Jan '12

25 Jan '12

Hi all. I have an MA. student interested in lgbtq internet use. I know little on the topic and would love some references to get aquainted with the area. Similarly, another student is into labor migrant use of technologies - which I know a bit more about, but would like a better sense of the literature before advising someone. If you have a Mendeley or Zotero tag or something else that is little work for you, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Katy Pearce

CfP: Theorizing the Web 2012
by PJ Rey 25 Jan '12

25 Jan '12

Theorizing the Web 2012 #TtW12 www.cyborgology.org/theorizingtheweb/2012/ Saturday, April 14th University of Maryland Keynote Session: “Social Media & Social Movements” Andy Carvin (NPR; @acarvin) with Zeynep Tufekci (UNC; @techsoc) Deadline for Abstracts: February 5th Registration Opens: February 1st Call for Papers: Building off the success of last year’s conference, the goal of the second annual Theorizing the Web conference is to expand the range and depth of theory used to help us make sense of how the Internet, digitality, and technology have changed the ways humans live. We hope to bring together researchers from a range of disciplines, including sociology, communications, philosophy, economics, English, history, political science, information science, the performing arts and many more. We especially encourage international perspectives. In addition, we invite session and other proposals by tech-industry professionals, journalists, and other figures outside of academia. Intersections of gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability will not be isolated in seperate panels; instead, we fully expect these issues to be woven throughout the conference. Submit abstracts online at http://tinyurl.com/TtW12. Topics include: Citizen/participant journalism and media curation Identity, self-documentation and self-presentation Privacy and publicity on the Web Cyborgism and the technologically-mediated body (e.g., body modification) Political mobilization, uprisings, revolutions and riots on social media (including the Arab Spring/Fall, Occupy) Repression and the Web: Surveillance, wire-tapping, anonymity, pseudonymity Code, values and design Epistemology of the Web: Wikipedia, Global Voices, “filter bubbles” and the prosumption of information Theorizing whose Web? How power and inequality (e.g., the Digital Divide) manifest on the Web Mobile computing, online/offline space Digital dualism & augmented reality; should the online/offline be conceptualized as seperate or enmeshed Education, pedagogy and technology in the classroom What art/literature can offer research and theory of the Web We plan to curate 7 open submission panels, 4 presenters each as well as a couple invited panels and a keynote session on social media and social movements with Andy Carvin (NPR) and Zeynep Tufekci (UNC). Other events may be added before April. The first Theorizing the Web conference happened last year. We decided to do this because there often is not a place for scholars who are theorizing about the Internet and society to gather and share their work. The 2011 program consisted of 14 panels, two workshops, two symposia (one on social media’s role in the Arab revolutions, the other, on social media and street art), two plenaries (by Saskia Sassen on "Digital Formations of the Powerful and the Powerless" and George Ritzer on "Why the Web Needs Post-Modern Theory"), and a keynote by danah boyd from Microsoft Research and NYU on "Privacy, Publicity Intertwined." Presenters traveled from around the world (including Hong Kong and New Zealand). The archive is available here. There will be a new website with much more information coming January 2012. For further inquiries, email theorizingtheweb(a)gmail.com. Call for Artists: In addition to traditional presentations, the conference will feature a variety of artistic and multimedia events. As such, we invite proposals from artists for relevant works or performances in any medium as well as for discussion of such pieces. We seek to display art of all forms during the conference and after at a reception. This could include, but is not limited to, paintings, sculpture, poetry, fiction writing, digital art, and performance art.

CfP: Open Panel at EASST/4S 2012, The Construction of Social Computing: Design and Displacement of Hybrid Relationships
by Maurizio 25 Jan '12

25 Jan '12

Sorry for Cross-Posting --- CfP: Open Panel at EASST/4S 2012, The Construction of Social Computing: Design and Displacement of Hybrid Relationships Organizers: Maurizio Teli, Ahref Foundation, Italy, maurizio(a)ahref.eu Vincenzo D'Andrea, University of Trento, Italy, vincenzo.dandrea(a)unitn.it David Hakken, Indiana University, USA, dhakken(a)indiana.edu In the last few years, the label “Social Computing” (SC) has been increasingly used to identify the ensemble of computing applications developed in order to foster and sustain social relationships . The use of the label seems to imply that SC is engaging with hybrid socio-technical relationships, underlining a change in computer science. Nevertheless, SC is in line with the origin of computer science, in particular with the computing development program promoted in the '50s by Norbert Wiener, aiming at promoting a society that increases the “human use of human beings”. However, although many applications are labeled “social computing,” they are mainly commoditized, to generate profit for corporations, and they focus on a restricted set of application domains. Such practical displacement of the societal view of Wiener calls for a deep reflection based on an empirical perspective able to frame SC through an STS lens, for two main reasons. Firstly, SC is an academic and social construction, and its design and foundational discourses can be understood and questioned through an STS lens. Secondly, the use of the term SC builds constraints on how innovation can take place in the social arena of SC. Along with these premises, an STS lens can increase the understanding of the hybrid relationships designed and displaced by SC academic practices, as well as overcoming the constraints of SC discourses providing conceptual and methodological tools to design new kind of SC technologies. Taking this perspective, we ask for contributions addressing: 1) the academic and industrial construction of SC within and across disciplines; 2) the design of social relationships in SC initiatives and their displacement in SC use; 3) the engagement of STS researchers, lexicon, and methods, as a practice-based intervention in the design of SC technologies; 4) the facilitation of social inclusion in SC projects. Please submit your abstract (max 250 words) electronically via the webpage of the conference: http://www.4sonline.org/meeting Deadline is the 18th March 2012. See you in Copenhagen! Maurizio
