ESN-IAMCR CfP Reminder: February 14 deadline
by Francesca Musiani 31 Jan '12

31 Jan '12

Dear colleagues, just a reminder that the deadline for presenting your abstract proposals for the Emerging Scholars Network section of the 2012 IAMCR conference is two weeks away, *February 14th*. Apologies for cross-posting. Best regards, Francesca ---------------- International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) DURBAN 2012 EMERGING SCHOLARS NETWORK SECTION CALL FOR PAPERS The Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) invites you to participate in the 2012 International Congress of the IAMCR to be held on July 15-19, 2012 at the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa. This year’s theme is South North Conversations. We call for general academic papers in Communication and Media Studies as well as papers addressing the concrete conference theme. Diverging from traditional world systems implications, this theme reflects the asymmetry of global communication flows, without suggesting the negatives that usually accompany discussions of the 'digital divide' within the context of the “global south.” The term ‘global south’ refers to countries, territories and communities that have been excluded from the mainstream of economic, social and communication development. In much of the discourse around global geo-politics, these countries and communities are still regarded as the recipients of economic and technical largesse from more developed sources. It is the theme of this conference to interrogate this assumption, and to emphasize the communicative empowerment and the positive potential of media and communication in and from the ‘Global South’. For more information on this year’s conference theme please see the general call for papers. The ESN is a section dedicated to the work and careers of emerging scholars in the field of media and communication. Hence, we especially look for works in progress from graduate students and new university instructors/professors who are interested in substantial feedback and comments intended to advance their projects. The ESN organizes emerging scholar panels and joint panels with other sections. Our emerging scholar panels provide a comfortable environment for the presentation of theses and works in progress, where emerging scholars can receive feedback from colleagues also at the beginning of their careers and from senior scholars who act as respondents to individual papers. The joint panels with other sections allow for the exchange of ideas with senior scholars in the field and networking. Should there be enough submissions we are planning to co-sponsor panels together with the following IAMCR Sections and Working Groups: Law Section; Gender and Communication Section; Media Education Section; Political Communication Section; Health, Communication and Change Working Group; and the Task Force on Media Policies. In line with the purpose of our section, the ESN also organizes panels about issues affecting emerging scholars, such as: - Publishing research results; - Mentoring and the Student-mentor relationship; - Academic work and academic jobs; - Neoliberalism in the academy; - Language barriers in academia. Scholars who wish to organize or contribute to an issue-related panel are welcome to contact Sara Bannerman at Sara.Bannerman [at] gmail.com and Stefania Milan at stefania.milan [at] eui.eu. SUBMISSIONS The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 14, 2012. Please note that this deadline will not be extended. The OCS system at http://iamcr-ocs.org will open on December 1, 2012, and will close on February 14, 2012. Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to individual applicants by their Section or Working Group Head no later than March 12, 2012. On the same day, March 12, 2012, conference registration will open for bookings by participants. For those whose abstracts are accepted, full conference papers are to be submitted via the IAMCR OCS by June 10, 2012. - Questions may be addressed to the section co-chairs, Stefania Milan stefania.milan(a)eui.eu and Sara Bannerman at Sara.Bannerman(a)gmail.com. - Submissions must include author name(s), affiliation, address, e-mail address, and paper title. - If you are submitting a work in progress, we welcome your submission! Please state that it is a work in progress in your abstract. - Abstracts should be 250-300 words. Please also take a look at our suggestions on how to write an abstract: http://iamcr.org/component/docman/doc_download/315-2010-esn-how-to-write-an… New !

CfP: Workshop on Complex Social Network Analysis (CSNA 2012)
by Luca Rossi 30 Jan '12

30 Jan '12

Workshop on Complex Social Network Analysis (CSNA 2012) Dear Colleagues, It is our pleasure to invite you to submit your recent work to the International Workshop on Complex Social Network Analysis (CSNA 2012) that is held as a part of the International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2012), 26-29 August, 2012, Kadir Has University, Istanbul, Turkey. Workshop Web Site: http://www.zsi.pwr.wroc.pl/CSNA2012 Submission Site: https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=csna2012 Submission Deadline: Mar 15, 2012 One of the reasons behind the tremendous success of Social Network Analysis (SNA) methods in various research disciplines is a very general and simple graph model that enables representation and study of extremely heterogeneous scenarios, ranging from workplace dynamics to the spreading of diseases or hyper-text documents in the World Wide Web. All these examples can be in fact modeled as homogeneous sets of nodes connected pairwise by some kind of edges. Commonly, each two nodes (social entities) are linked by a single edge (connection, link, bind, arc, tie), which, in turn, can be either undirected or directed, weighted or unweighted. While this generality still constitutes a great value, recently, it has become apparent that to model specific contexts and to enable accurate analyses it may be important to enrich the simple network models with more complex modeling constructs. A typical example is a multi-layer (called also multi-layered, multi-modal or multidimensional) network, where nodes are connected to each other through different kinds of links and each such a kind corresponds to a single layer. Each layer can refer either to a different type of relationship (sociological approach: friendship / family ties / collaboration at work) or to a different type of user common activities (computer science approach: email exchange / commenting the same photo / usage of the same tags). Besides, in many domains and environments, we can extract more than one type of nodes - it means that a social network may be heterogeneous (multi-modal) rather than homogeneous. For example, we can have teacher-nodes (one type-mode) mixed with student-nodes (another type-mode) or we can distinguish different user accounts registered in a number of services, e.g. various online games. Both multi-layer(ed) and heterogeneous (multi-modal) networks can be generalized to simple networks extended with labels (types, classes, modes, layers, levels) assigned either to edges or nodes. This concept also covers spatial networks where nodes and edges are annotated (labeled) with their location. Temporal (dynamic) social networks expand this model by introduction of timestamps assigned to nodes or edges; its disparate feature is the fixed order among following snapshots. Looking at current mainstream online social networks, we can easily see the relevance of these models: notable examples are Google+ circles, defining different kinds of social ties, users having multiple accounts in different web 2.0 services like Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, as well as Twitter conversations where messages are exchanged at precise timestamps and sometimes from the known locations. We refer to these enriched networks as complex social networks. The objective of this workshop is to provide a venue to discuss the latest advances on complex social network analysis, mining and applications. Contributions coming from several fields, including computer science and social sciences, are welcome. The scope of the workshop includes (but is not limited to) the following topics: Data models for complex social networks Multi-layer(ed) networks Multi-modal social networks Multidimensional social networks Spatial networks Temporal analysis on social networks Dynamics modeling and measures for social networks Homogeneous social networks Statistical modeling of complex social networks Patterns in complex social networks Complex social network mining Cross-sectional analysis in social networks Measures for complex social networks and algorithms for their calculation Dynamics and evolution patterns of complex social networks Algorithms for large-scale complex social networks Merging social networks User identification / unification in multiple-system social networks Applications of complex social network analysis Community discovery in complex social networks (multi-layered / multi-modal / heterogeneous communities) Visual representation of complex networks and complex online social phenomena Data protection in location-based networks Methodological problems in complex social network studies Data mining in social networking sites Social Networks with Uncertainty Important dates: March 15, 2012 - Full paper submission deadline May 5, 2012 - Notification of acceptance May 20, 2012 - Camera-ready paper due May 20, 2012 - Presenting author registration due August 26-29, 2012 - Conference, the workshop is scheduled on the first day of the ASONAM conference (August 26, 2012) Przemyslaw Kazienko (Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland) Matteo Magnani (Aarhus University, Denmark) Luca Rossi (University of Urbino "Carlo Bo", Italy) -- -- Luca Rossi LaRiCA - Advanced Communication Laboratory Faculty of Sociology - "Carlo Bo" University, Urbino luca.rossi(a)uniurb.it T. +39 0722 305726 F. +39 0722 305727 http://larica.uniurb.it/redline

Antonino Rotolo, CIRSFID, U. di Bologna, Italy. Giovanni Sartor, EUI and CIRSFID, Italy. Judith Simon, University of Vienna, Austria and & Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. Clara Smith, UNLP and UCALP, Argentina. -------------------------------- This 2012 symposium merges the symposium entitled Social Turn: Social Computing - Social Cognition - Social Intelligence; and the SNAMAS symposium, focused on Social Networks and Multi-Agent Systems, which have precursor symposia in Social Computing at IACAP and the SNAMAS in AISB conferences. ---------------------------------- TOPICS The field of social computing has two different foci: social and computational. There is the focus on socialness of social software or social web applications. Widespread examples of social software are blogs, wikis, social bookmarking services, instant messaging services, and social networking sites. Social computing often uses various types of crowdsourcing techniques for aggregation of input from numerous users (public at large). Tools such as prediction markets, social tagging, reputation and trust systems as well as recommender systems are based on collaborative filtering and thus a result of crowdsourcing. Another focus of social computing is on computational modeling of social behavior, among others through Multi-agent systems (MAS) and Social Networks (SN). MAS have an anchoring going beyond social sciences even when a sociological terminology is often used. There are several usages of MAS: to design distributed and/or hybrid systems; to develop philosophical theory; to understand concrete social facts, or to answer concrete social issues via modelling and simulation. MAS aim at modelling, among other things, cognitive or reactive agents who interact in dynamic environments where they possibly depend on each other to achieve their goals. The emphasis is nowadays on constructing complex computational systems composed by agents which are regulated by various types of norms, and behave like human social systems. Finally, Social networks (SN) are social structures made of nodes (which are, generally, individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, disease transmission, among many others. Social networks analysis plays a critical role in determining the way specific problems are solved, organizations are run, and the degree to which individuals succeed in achieving their goals. Social networks analysis has addressed also the dynamics issue, called dynamic networks analysis. This is an emergent scientific field that brings together traditional social network analysis, link analysis and multi-agent systems. The symposium addresses, but is not limited to, the following topics: - Conceptual issues such as Socialness (notions of the social used and/or enforced in social computing and research on social cognition or social intelligence) and Computational Models and mechanisms of social computing (information processing) as well as models and social mechanisms of cognition and intelligence. - Agency & Action in social computing systems: How can agency be understood and/or modeled in systems consisting of human and non-human agents? - Social Coordination & Norms: Emergence of norms (e.g. in Wikipedia) and compliance including their computational modeling in socio-technical systems. - Interaction & Communication in socio-technical systems and their computational models - Knowledge: the epistemological and ethical consequences of distributed knowledge creation in social computing and its computational models - Relations between the individual and the social: Forming of individual existence in relation to social computing (e.g. digital identity), including its computational modeling. - Agreement technologies. - Electronic Institutions. - Empirical and/or theoretical studies on a specific social or legal relationship (power, solidarity, legitimity, dependency...). - Empirical and/or theoretical studies on social relations' regulations. - Formalization of Normed Systems. - Logical frameworks for representing, describing and analysing agent's social or legal relationships. - Relations between the individual and the social: Forming of individual existence in relation to social computing (e.g. digital identity), including its info-computational modeling. - Responsibility, Accountability & Liability. What is epistemically and ethically responsible behavior with respect to social software and how can it be supported? What are the responsibilities of different human agents (e.g. software users, designers, researchers, etc)? - Rules and standards. - Social Networking Sites: philosophical implications of socialness in social networking sites (e.g., privacy, social structures, etc.). - Info-computational models of social networking sites. - The role of agents´ attributes in structuring social and legal relationships. - The role of specific social relationships in structuring groups and organizations. - Trust in social computing. Differences and similarities between notions of trust e.g. in multi-agent systems, social networking sites, recommender systems, etc. Differences and similarities between trust online and offline. How can trust be supported by a computational system itself? ------------------------------ IMPORTANT DATES Paper submission deadline: March 2, 2012. Notification of acceptance: April 2, 2012. Each delegate at the Congress will receive, on arrival, a memory stick containing the proceedings of all symposia. Selected papers of the Symposium, under a second review process, will be considered for a special issue of the AI & Law Journal, Springer http://www.springer.com/computer/ai/journal/10506; and for the open access TripleC journal http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC . -------------------------------------- ABOUT THE CONGRESS The Congress serves both as the year's AISB Convention and the year's IACAP conference. The Congress has been inspired by a desire to honour Alan Turing, and by the broad and deep significance of Turing's work to AI, to the philosophical ramifications of computing, and to Philosophy and computing more generally. The Congress is one of the events forming the Alan Turing Year (http://www.mathcomp.leeds.ac.uk/turing2012/) The intent of the Congress is to stimulate a particularly rich interchange between AI and Philosophy on any areas of mutual interest, whether directly addressing Turing's own research output or not. The Congress will consist mainly of a number of collocated Symposia on specific research areas, interspersed with Congress-wide refreshment breaks, social events and invited Plenary Talks. All papers other than the invited Plenaries will be given within Symposia. This symposium is closely connected to UmoCoP, Symposium on Understanding and Modelling Collective Phenomena, which will be held on July 3rd-5th 2012. There will be a joint panel from both symposia on July 3rd. ---------------------- CONTACTS For further inquiries please contact any of the chairs: gordana.dodig-crnkovic(a)mdh.se, judith.simon(a)univie.ac.at (SOCIAL COMPUTING - SOCIAL COGNITION - SOCIAL NETWORKS) antonino.rotolo(a)unibo.it, giovanni.sartor(a)libero.it, csmith(a)info.unlp.edu.ar (MULTIAGENT SYSTEMS)
