The interdisciplinary conference "Science and the Internet", to be held August 1-3, 2012 in Düsseldorf, brings together researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines (e.g. information science, computer science, sociology, communication and media studies, linguistics, educations studies, legal studies, etc.) working on the following or related issues: How is the research process transformed through the use of digital infrastructures? How can the challenges of the public availability of (large scale) scientific data be met? How do scholars make use of social networking platforms, (micro-)blogs, wikis, or websites? How does the Internet affect scholarly publishing (e.g. Open Access, unpublished manuscripts, blogs)? How has the Internet changed the practice and relevance of citations and of receiving reputation? How do teaching styles or beliefs and use of the Internet mutually influence each other? Do Web 2.0 platforms offer opportunities to advance public understanding of science? What is the role of ethics, policies, and legal regulation in academic use of the Internet? What theoretical and practical implications do the aforementioned considerations have for science and the Internet? -------------------------------- SUBMISSION GUIDELINES -------------------------------- The conference language is English. We invite two types of submissions: Abstracts for talks (20 minutes for presentation + 10 minutes for discussion) should not exceed 500 words, excluding data and references. In case of acceptance a full paper (max. 3.000 words or 12 pages) in either English or German must be submitted by July 15, 2012. The full paper will be published in conference proceedings (print and online). Proposals for interactive workshops (90 minutes) should outline both the thematic focus and the session design. Dear Colleagues, The study on design journals by Gerda Gemser, Cees de Bont, Paul Hekkert and myself is now in print in Design Studies. Gemser, Gerda, Cees de Bont, Paul Hekkert and Ken Friedman. "Quality perceptions of design journals: The design scholars’ perspective." Design Studies, Volume 33, Issue 1, January 2012, Pages 4–23. You will find it in the digital resource collection of your library at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.destud.2011.09.001 We have received several requests for a compilation of information on the journals we used in the study. We are now working on this. The compilation will be a directory of design journals giving editorial and publishing journal information on each journal with a web site for every journal. The PDF will have active links so that you can go directly from our compilation to the journal web site. The information we provide will hopefully make journal selection easier while providing useful information on appropriate venues for specific kinds of articles. We hope to release the directory in April. Until we release the directory, you can reach all the journals in our article via journal web sites or your own library. The directory will make all the information easily accessible in one place. We appreciate the wide interest this article has been receiving. We welcome queries and comments. Cohen Professor of Law Georgetown University Law Center Abstract Configuring the Networked Self explores the relationships between copyright, creativity, and culture, between surveillance, privacy, and subjectivity, and between network architecture and social ordering, and through those explorations develops a unified framework for conceptualizing the social and cultural effects of legal and technical regimes that govern information access and use. The book asks the sorts of questions with which law traditionally has concerned itself (what regime of information rights is just, and why), but it emphasizes a set of considerations that legal thinking about those issues has tended to marginalize. It argues that legal scholarship on the networked information society has gone astray by positing simplistic models of individual behavior derived from the commitments of liberal theory, rather than from reality. A wise regime of information law and policy should focus, instead, on the ordinary rhythms and routines of everyday practice. In particular, it should pay special attention to the connections between everyday practice and play and to the ways in which culture and subjectivity emerge from the interactions between the ordinary and the unexpected. Finally, the book identifies a set of reform principles for information law and policy that moves beyond ³access to knowledge² to include two additional principles. A just regime of information law and policy should guarantee an adequate level of operational transparency about the ways that networked information processes and devices mediate access to information and services. In addition it should promote regulatory and technical architectures that are characterized by semantic discontinuity, in order to create and preserve spaces within which the play of everyday practice can move. In his discussion of the dot-com boom and bust cycle, he lays out the challenges faced by critical Internet culture today. In a series of case studies, Loovink meticulously describes the ambivalent attitude that artists and activists take as they veer back and forth between euphoria and skepticism. As part of this process, Lovink examines the internal dynamics of virtual communities through an analysis of the use of moderation and "collaborative filtering" on mailing lists and weblogs. He also confronts the practical and theoretical problems that appear as artists join the growing number of new media educational programs. Delving into the unexplored gold mines of list archives and blogs, Lovink reveals a world that is largely unknown to both the general public and the Internet visionaries. More information can be found on the workshop website at http://di.ncl.ac.uk/foodixd/ The intersection between food and interaction design presents an interesting challenge to the HCI community in attending to the pervasive nature of food, the socio-cultural differences in food practices and a changing global foodscape. We propose a one-day workshop that aims to bring together researchers involved in studying in areas of food and human-computer interaction. The workshop will be organized with a poster session to foster discussion, followed by a working session that will include a visit to and collaboration with a local food co-op to capture local food related practices. At the end of the workshop we aim to discuss the role of food in HCI, to better understand daily food practices within existing environments and develop design proposals aiming to support production and consumption of food towards health, food experiences, ecological sustainability and alternative food cultures. We are also exploring options for a special issue of a journal to focus on the current state of research in this area. We are looking for contributions in the field of food, HCI and interaction design in the following areas: * Perspectives from multiple disciplines * Food and ecological sustainability, alternative food cultures, food experiences, healthy diets and wellbeing * Studies on daily practices, values and social norms * Behavior change (models) and community actions * Measurability of food consumption and waste * Design frameworks for human-food interaction Submissions from other areas will be considered depending on their relevance and unique contribution to the workshop and the field. Participants will be required to submit a 2-4 page position paper which addresses the issue of food and interaction design. In particular, papers addressing the everyday aspects of food and interaction design in themes of health and wellbeing, food experiences, ecological sustainability and alternative food cultures will be especially welcome. At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the workshop and for at least one day of the conference. Submissions are welcomed from researchers and practitioners working with Food in HCI and Interaction Design. Prof. Richard Taylor Institute for Information Policy The Pennsylvania State University Call for Paper Proposals The End of the Phone System A by-invitation Experts' Workshop to be held at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA, May 16-18, 2012 The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and the collection of technologies known as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) are the foundations of communications policy throughout the world. As traffic and industry activity migrate to Internet protocol-based communication, wireless networks, video, and other systems, however, the obsolescence of these infrastructures is in sight. The transition from the phone system to converged IP-based networks raises major regulatory, technical and economic questions. Legacy rules do not address the role of regulation in the coming all-IP marketplace. The Internet was never designed to serve the many roles that the traditional phone network plays and there is no plan in place for a managed transition as with digital television and number portability. The time has come to tackle these questions. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University, The Mack Center for Technological Innovation at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center at Fordham University are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals in which "The End of the Phone System" serves as the main theme. Authors of selected papers will be invited to present them during a two day (May 17th and 18th) by-invitation workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts and to be held at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. The workshop will open with a reception on May 16th. This Workshop is one of a series of events on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation.
