Has NYTimes jumped the e-shark
by Barry Wellman 16 Dec '11

Monica Murero just pointed out to us the evidence-free NYT article on doctors supposedly "distracted" by e-devices. That's the second evidence free article from the NYT I've seen in 2 days. They did a piece on Thursday about people allegedly leaving Facebook. Once again, just with a few random anecdotes that were not quite on point. I'm not talking about spinning evidence, but total lack of. So I wonder if the NYT, which for all its faults used to fact check (I remember the Qs well when they interviewed me) has gone over to the dark side. Cdns may be amused/outraged that CTV Toronto news read the Times article and only then contacted me about the subject. The reporter was sure it was right because her editor (not she) had read it in the NYT. Is this lack of evidence related to recent editorial changes at the NYT? Internet Research 13.0: Technologies The 13th Annual International and Interdisciplinary Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) October 18-21, 2012 MediaCity:UK - University of Salford Salford - Greater Manchester - UK http://ir13.aoir.org Internet Research 13.0 will focus on the theme of technologies, understood in the broadest sense as crafts, techniques, and systems. The conference will examine the place of the Internet in the contemporary world and in relation to a range of existing and emerging technologies, considering its impact in a context where life is entangled with technologies of all kinds as never before. The conference will bring together scholars, researchers, students and practitioners from many disciplines to map and situate the development of the Internet as part of the history of human technology. To this end, we call for papers, panel and pre-conference workshop proposals from any discipline, methodology, community or a combination of them that address the conference themes, including, but not limited to, papers that intersect and/or interconnect with the following: * the speed and acceleration of technological change * the past, present and future of technology * emerging and converging technologies * educational technology * cultures of crafting * connectivity and access * space, location and mobile technologies * technology, networks and attachments * technology and the body * technologies of the self * technology, regulation and ethics Sessions at the conference will be established that specifically address the conference themes, and we welcome innovative, exciting, and unexpected takes on those themes. We also welcome submissions on topics that address social, cultural, political, legal, aesthetic, economic, and/or philosophical aspects of the internet beyond the conference themes. In all cases, we welcome disciplinary and interdisciplinary submissions as well as international collaborations from both AoIR and non-AoIR members. SUBMISSIONS We seek proposals for several different kinds of contributions. As in the past, we welcome proposals for traditional academic conference PAPERS, organized PANEL PROPOSALS that present a coherent group of papers on a single theme, as well as PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS which focus on a particular topic. We also invite proposals that will focus on discussion and interaction among conference delegates. A common form of this type is the ROUNDTABLE SESSION, but we would also like to encourage other formats, such as OPEN FISHBOWL SESSIONS. (See the Wikipedia entry under “Fishbowl (conversation)” for a description of this format. Fishbowl sessions should cover broad topics of interest to a wide segment of the AoIR community.) Finally, we invite short 5-minute talks on topics of interest to the community as part of our Ignite-IR panels. Please see below for more information on this format. DEADLINES Submissions Due: 1 March 2012 (Papers, Panels and Pre-Workshops. Details below.) NOTE: The submission deadline is a HARD DEADLINE; there will be NO extensions to this date. Notification: 1 May 2012 Full Papers Submissions Due for inclusion in Selected Papers of IR: 1 July 2012 Ignite-IR Final Proposal Deadline: 1 August 2012 Ignite-IR Slides Due: 15 September 2012 SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS All papers and presentations will be evaluated in a standard blind peer review. PAPERS (individual or multi-author) – submit abstract of 600-800 words PANEL PROPOSALS – submit a description of 600-800 words on the panel theme, plus a 250-500 word abstract for each paper or presentation. The panel organizer must assemble these materials for submission ROUNDTABLE and FISHBOWL PROPOSALS – submit a statement indicating the nature of the discussion and form of interaction, and listing initial participants. (In the case of a fishbowl proposal, this will include the name of the moderator, and the names of the first four speakers for the fishbowl.) PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS – please submit all workshop proposals via email to attwood(a)aoir.org<mailto:attwood@aoir.org>. Workshop proposals should include names of presenters and a 1,000-word description. IGNITE-IR – please submit a one-paragraph abstract and other information. Details at http://ir13.aoir.org/ignite-ir Papers, presentations and panels will be selected from the submitted proposals on the basis of multiple blind peer review, coordinated and overseen by the Program Chair. Each individual may present only one paper during the conference, though they may be listed as a co-author on multiple papers. In addition to this one presentation, they may also appear on a panel, roundtable, or performance. The exception is the Ignite-IR lightening talk, which may be in addition to any other presentations. PUBLICATION OF PAPERS Full papers submitted by the 1 July 2012 deadline will undergo review to be published in an open-access, online collection, Selected Papers of Internet Research (ISSN 2162-3317). A template and guidelines for preparing your final paper are available on the conference website (http://ir13.aoir.org/papers) Selected papers from the conference will alternatively be published in a special issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society. Authors selected for submission for this issue will be contacted prior to the conference. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS On 18 October 2012, there will be a limited number of pre-conference workshops and symposia that will provide participants with in-depth, hands-on and/or creative opportunities. We invite proposals for these pre-conference workshops. Local presenters are encouraged to propose workshops that will invite visiting researchers into their labs or studios or locales. Proposals should be no more than 1,000 words, and should clearly outline the purpose, methodology, structure, costs, equipment and minimal attendance required, as well as explaining its relevance to the conference as a whole. Proposals will be accepted if they demonstrate that the workshop will add significantly to the overall program in terms of thematic depth, hands on experience, or local opportunities for scholarly or artistic connections. These proposals and all inquiries regarding pre-conference proposals should be submitted as soon as possible to the program chair (attwood(a)aoir.org<mailto:attwood@aoir.org>) and no later than 1 March 2012. IGNITE-IR For the second year, the Internet Research conference will offer the opportunity to present short, five minute talks in rapid succession. Presenters provide a deck of twenty slides, which will auto-advance each fifteen seconds. Details on the session maybe found at the conference website. Because talks are intended to be of the moment, the submission deadline is much later than for papers: 1 August 2012. Open Humanities Press publishes twenty-one open access Living Books About Life
by Gary Hall 16 Dec '11

16 Dec '11

LIVING BOOKS ABOUT LIFE http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org The pioneering open access humanities publishing initiative, Open Humanities Press (OHP) (http://openhumanitiespress.org) is pleased to announce the release of 21 open access books in its series Living Books About Life (http://www.livingbooksaboutlife.org) Funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), and edited by Gary Hall, Joanna Zylinska and Clare Birchall, Living Books About Life is a series of curated, open access books about life -- with life understood both philosophically and biologically -- which provide a bridge between the humanities and the sciences. Produced by a globally-distributed network of writers and editors, the books in the series repackage existing open access science research by clustering it around selected topics whose unifying theme is life: e.g., air, agriculture, bioethics, cosmetic surgery, electronic waste, energy, neurology and pharmacology. Peter Suber, Open Access Project Director, Public Knowledge, said: ‘This book series would not be possible without open access. On the author side, it takes splendid advantage of the freedom to reuse and repurpose open-access research articles. On the other side, it passes on that freedom to readers. In between, the editors made intelligent selections and wrote original introductions, enhancing each article by placing it in the new context of an ambitious, integrated understanding of life, drawing equally from the sciences and humanities’. By creating twenty one ‘living books about life’ in just seven months, the series represents an exciting new model for publishing, in a sustainable, low-cost, low-tech manner, many more such books in the future. These books can be freely shared with other academic and non-academic institutions and individuals. Nicholas Mirzoeff, Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University, commented: ‘This remarkable series transforms the humble Reader into a living form, while breaking down the conceptual barrier between the humanities and the sciences in a time when scholars and activists of all kinds have taken the understanding of life to be central. Brilliant in its simplicity and concept, this series is a leap towards an exciting new future’. One of the most important aspects of the Living Books About Life series is the impact it has had on the attitudes of the researchers taking part, changing their views on open access and raising awareness of issues around publishers’ licensing and copyright agreements. Many have become open access advocates themselves, keen to disseminate this model among their own scholarly and student communities. As Professor Erica Fudge of the University of Strathclyde and co-editor of the living book on Veterinary Science, put it, ‘I am now evangelical about making work publicly available, and am really encouraging colleagues to put things out there’. These ‘books about life’ are themselves ‘living’, in the sense they are open to ongoing collaborative processes of writing, editing, updating, remixing and commenting by readers. As well as repackaging open access science research -- together with interactive maps and audio-visual material -- into a series of books, Living Books About Life is thus involved in rethinking ‘the book’ itself as a living, collaborative endeavour in the age of open science, open education, open data, and e-book readers such as Kindle and the iPad. Tara McPherson, editor of VECTORS, Journal of Culture and Technology in a Dynamic Vernacular, said: ‘It is no hyperbole to say that this series will help us reimagine everything we think we know about academic publishing. It points to a future that is interdisciplinary, open access, and expansive.’ Funded by JISC, Living Books About Life is a collaboration between Open Humanities Press and three academic institutions, Coventry University, Goldsmiths, University of London, and the University of Kent. Fwd: [ciresearchers] Doctors, [ICTs] and potential distractions / today's NYT

This is very interesting and useful to my colleagues here. Gene ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: David Sadoway <bigbluearth(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Dec 15, 2011 at 6:38 AM Subject: [ciresearchers] Doctors, [ICTs] and potential distractions / today's NYT To: ciresearchers(a)vancouvercommunity.net Cc: michael gurstein <gurstein(a)gmail.com> An article which may be of interest from today's NYTimes. December 14, 2011 https://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/15/health/as-doctors-use-more-devices-poten… As Doctors Use More Devices, Potential for Distraction Grows By MATT RICHTEL Hospitals and doctors’ offices, hoping to curb medical error, have invested heavily to put computers, smartphones and other devices into the hands of medical staff for instant access to patient data, drug information and case studies. But like many cures, this solution has come with an unintended side effect: doctors and nurses can be focused on the screen and not the patient, even during moments of critical care. And they are not always doing work; examples include a neurosurgeon making personal calls during an operation, a nurse checking airfares during surgery and a poll showing that half of technicians running bypass machines had admitted texting during a procedure. This phenomenon has set off an intensifying discussion at hospitals and medical schools about a problem perhaps best described as “distracted doctoring.” In response, some hospitals have begun limiting the use of devices in critical settings, while schools have started reminding medical students to focus on patients instead of gadgets, even as the students are being given more devices. “You walk around the hospital, and what you see is not funny,” said Dr. Peter J. Papadakos, an anesthesiologist and director of critical care at the University of Rochester Medical Center in upstate New York, who added that he had seen nurses, doctors and other staff members glued to their phones, computers and iPads. “You justify carrying devices around the hospital to do medical records,” he said. “But you can surf the Internet or do Facebook, and sometimes, for whatever reason, Facebook is more tempting.” “My gut feeling is lives are in danger,” said Dr. Papadakos, who recently published an article on “electronic distraction” in Anesthesiology News, a journal. “We’re not educating people about the problem, and it’s getting worse.” Research on the subject is beginning to emerge. A peer-reviewed survey of 439 medical technicians published this year in Perfusion, a journal about cardio-pulmonary bypass surgery, found that 55 percent of technicians who monitor bypass machines acknowledged to researchers that they had talked on cellphones during heart surgery. Half said they had texted while in surgery. About 40 percent said they believed talking on the phone during surgery to be “always an unsafe practice.” About half said the same about texting. The study’s authors concluded, “Such distractions have the potential to be disastrous.” Doctors and medical professionals have always faced interruptions from beepers and phones, and multitasking is simply a fact of life for many medical jobs. What has changed, doctors say, especially younger ones, is that they face increasing pressure to interact with their devices. The pressure stems from a mantra of modern medicine that patient care must be “data driven,” and informed by the latest, instantly accessible information. Annual investment in gadgets and other technology by hospitals and doctors has soared into the billions of dollars. By many accounts, the technology has helped reduce medical error by, for example, providing instant access to patient data or prescription details. Dr. Peter W. Carmel, president of the American Medical Association, a physicians group, said technology “offers great potential in health care,” but he added that doctors’ first priority should be with the patient. Indeed, doctors and nurses face growing pressures to listen carefully to patients, provide customer service and show empathy as they look for subtle cues that might explain an illness. “The computer has become a good place to get a result, communicate with other people,” said Abraham Verghese, a doctor and professor at the Stanford University Medical Center and a best-selling medical writer. “In the interest of preventing medical error, it’s a good friend.” At the same time, he said, the wealth of data on the screen — what he frequently refers to as the “iPatient” — gets all the attention. “The iPatient is getting wonderful care across America,” Dr. Verghese said. “The real patient wonders, ‘Where is everybody?’ ” It is hard to know the precise impact that distracted doctoring has on patient care, because it is hard to measure. But at least one example puts the risks in sharp relief. Scott J. Eldredge, a medical malpractice lawyer in Denver, recently represented a patient who was left partly paralyzed after surgery. The neurosurgeon was distracted during the operation, using a wireless headset to talk on his cellphone, Mr. Eldredge said. “He was making personal calls,” Mr. Eldredge said, at least 10 of them to family and business associates, according to phone records. His client’s case was settled before a lawsuit was filed so there are no court records, like the name of the patient, doctor or hospital involved. Mr. Eldredge, citing the agreement, declined to provide further details. Others describe multitasking as relatively commonplace. “I’ve seen texting among people I’m supervising in the O.R.,” said Dr. Stephen Luczycki, an anesthesiologist and medical director in one of the surgical intensive care units at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He said he had also seen young anesthesiologists using the operating room computer during surgery. “It is not, unfortunately, uncommon to see them doing any number of things with that computer beyond patient care,” Dr. Luczycki said, including checking e-mail and studying or entering logs on a separate case. He said that when he was in training, he was admonished to not even study a textbook in surgery, so he could focus on the rhythm and subtleties of the procedures. When he uses computers in the intensive care unit, he regularly sees what his colleagues were doing before him. “Amazon, Gmail, I’ve seen all sorts of shopping, I’ve seen eBay,” he said. “You name it, I’ve seen it.” Dr. Luczycki is also a huge fan of technology’s positive impact on medicine. So, too, is Dio Sumagaysay, administrative director of 24 operating rooms at Oregon Health and Science University hospitals, even though he has heard about or witnessed instances of people using devices during critical moments. In early 2010, he heard several complaints that doctors or nurses were using their phones to check or send e-mails even though they were part of a team intubating a patient before surgery. Mr. Sumagaysay established a policy to make operating rooms “quiet zones,” banning any activity that was not focused on patient care. He later had to reprimand a nurse he saw checking airline prices using an operating room computer during a spinal operation. Medical professionals say young doctors can be particularly susceptible to distraction because they have grown up being constantly connected. At Stanford Medical School, for example, all students now get iPads, which they use to read medical texts and carry with them in hospitals but are also admonished not let get in the way of their work. “Devices have a great capacity to reduce risk,” Dr. Charles G. Prober, senior associate dean for medical education at the school, said. “But the last thing we want to see, and what is happening in some cases now, is the computer coming between the patient and his doctor.” To unsubscribe (subscribe) send an email to: sympa(a)vcn.bc.ca with the message unsub (sub) ciresearchers

Greetings, friends, A colleague and I are part of a university project that will provide free iPads to all students in our Multimedia Storytelling class, an upper level Journalism elective with nine students. We want to explore the possibilities of the iPad not simply for the consumption of journalism, but the production of journalism. Two questions: 1) Have any of you or your students used the iPad as a journalistic device? 2) If you were in charge of such a class, what kinds of things would you read and do? Thanks, as always, for the guidance and collegiality. In addition, we invite session and other proposals by tech-industry professionals, journalists, and other figures outside of academia. Submit abstracts online at http://tinyurl.com/TtW12. Topics include: - Citizen/participant journalism and media curation - Identity, self-documentation and self-presentation - Privacy and publicity on the Web - Cyborgism and the technologically-mediated body (e.g., body modification) - Political mobilization, uprisings, revolutions and riots on social media (including the Arab Spring/Fall, Occupy) - Repression and the Web: Surveillance, wire-tapping, anonymity, pseudonymity - Code, values and design - Epistemology of the Web: Wikipedia, Global Voices, “filter bubbles” and the prosumption of information - Theorizing whose Web? How power and inequality (e.g., the Digital Divide) manifest on the Web - Mobile computing, online/offline space - Digital dualism and “augmented reality” - What art/literature can offer research and theory of the Web - Intersections of gender, race, class, age, sexual orientation, and disability with respect to any of the above topics We plan to curate 7 open submission panels, 4 presenters each as well as a couple invited panels and a keynote session on social media and social movements with Andy Carvin (NPR) and Zeynep Tufekci (UNC). Other events may be added before April. The first Theorizing the Web conference happened last year. We decided to do this because there often is not a place for scholars who are theorizing about the Internet and society to gather and share their work. The 2011 program consisted of 14 panels, two workshops, two symposia (one on social media’s role in the Arab revolutions, the other, on social media and street art), two plenaries (by Saskia Sassen on "Digital Formations of the Powerful and the Powerless" and George Ritzer on "Why the Web Needs Post-Modern Theory"), and a keynote by danah boyd from Microsoft Research and NYU on "Privacy, Publicity Intertwined." Presenters traveled from around the world (including Hong Kong and New Zealand). The archive is available at: http://www.cyborgology.org/theorizingtheweb/2011 There will be a new website with much more information coming January 2012. For further inquiries, email theorizingtheweb(a)gmail.com. Call for Artists: In addition to traditional presentations, the conference will feature a variety of artistic and multimedia events. As such, we invite proposals from artists for relevant works or performances in any medium as well as for discussion of such pieces. We seek to display art of all forms during the conference and after at a reception. This could include, but is not limited to, paintings, sculpture, poetry, fiction writing, digital art, and performance art.

The location of the global IGF in Africa meant that for the first time ever over half of attendees were from the Africa region. The large number of participants from African countries meant that issues of importance to the global south pertaining to all the themes in the IGF agenda had greater prominence than in previous events. The high incidence of African panelists brought new perspectives to a discussion that had lacked immediacy in previous IGFs. The main theme of the IGF was Internet as a catalyst for change: Access, development, freedoms and innovation. APC strongly supported the focus on access, development and freedom, viewing all three as critical issues if the internet is to fulfill its potential to contribute to social justice and development. The Nairobi IGF demonstrated that this forum remains a creative and influential space for policy dialogue. Prior to the IGF, APC released a briefing paper outlining our priorities for the IGF2. In this report, we reflect on those priorities and on the Sixth Forum in general. We also renew our proposal to have human rights be the central theme for the next IGF.
