CFP: Badges, Trophies, and Achievements: Recognition and Accreditation for Informal and Interest-Driven Learning
by Sheryl Grant 14 Dec '11

14 Dec '11

Call for Applications: Badges, Trophies, and Achievements: Recognition and Accreditation for Informal and Interest-Driven Learning Research: assessment, badging Grants: Research Grant, Doctoral Student Grants, Student Prize, Faculty Prize Deadline: Apply by *January 6, 2012* (application instructions: http://www.dmlcompetition.net/Competition/4/research-apply.php) Online networks, digital resources, and gaming environments provide rich opportunities for learning that is demand-driven and learner-centered. More and more people are turning to networked knowledge communities, online tutorials, and other digital resources for wide ranging learning needs. While learning is migrating to these more informal and non-institutionalized kinds of contexts, we still have little research that examines how people assess, recognize, and display the learning that happens in these settings. - What are the emerging techniques and practices for managing reputation and recognizing learning? - What are the broad historical and structural understandings of how accreditation operates in our changing social and cultural environment? - What systems exist for recognizing learning outside of formal degree and training programs? - How do credentials and other displays of achievement operate in the digital and networked world? - What kinds of skills and experiences have not been well captured by existing credentialing and recognition systems? - How is the landscape of credentialing changing (or not) with the shift to digital and networked society? We seek empirical and theoretical research focusing on these questions. Studies should focus on areas such as: - Ranking, badging, and achievement systems in games, clubs, competitions, and other forms of interest-driven activities. - Accreditation and certificates outside of formal degree programs, including areas such as work skills training, language, writing, and critical thinking capabilities, arts, crafts, and other trades. - The role of credentials, badges, and other recognitions of achievement in career and reputation development. - Empirical, theoretical, and critical studies of how companies, groups, institutions, and individuals produce, utilize, and exploit various credentialing and reputation systems. RESEARCH GRANT (1) Research funds to support the gathering and writing up of findings on novel and effective ways of assessing learning practices, especially learning facilitated by digital media. We are especially interested in work considering the role and effectiveness of badges and badging systems as instruments of assessment though competitive proposals will not be limited to this narrower focus. Awarded funds may be used for salary replacement, for travel in support of data collection, for modest graduate research assistance in support of the project (no more than one-third of final budget), or for modest technological support for the project. The grantee will also be responsible for organizing a workshop or a working group on the topic. In addition to the faculty support funding of the award ($60,000) there would be a budget of $20,000 available to support the workshop or working group. These funds may be used to support travel, accommodation and food expenses for workshop or working group participants but not for graduate student stipends or fees. The grantee is required to produce one publication, which could be a book, a MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Report, literature review, or white paper. Support for activities resulting in publication are to be included in the grant budget. Research award winners are expected to attend the Digital Media and Learning Symposium in San Francisco on February 29, 2012, followed by the Digital Media and Learning Conference on March 1-3, 2012 ( http://dml2012.dmlcentral.net/) as well as one of the Competition winners meetings, travel costs for which are to be included in the awarded budgets. Grantees are also required to set aside funds for the winners' event to be held in conjunction with the 2013 Digital Media and Learning Conference. Participation at the event is a requirement of the award. - Research funds: $60,000 - Workshop/Working Group funding, in addition: $20,000 - Application: - Proposal outline, including rationale and work plan, no more than 1000 words - Working group, or workshop outline, no more than 250 words - Budget and budget narrative for proposal - Budget and budget narrative for working group DOCTORAL STUDENT GRANTS (2) One year of funding to support dissertation research and write-up of findings on novel and effective ways of assessing learning practices, especially learning facilitated by digital media. by Jessica Richman 14 Dec '11

14 Dec '11

Hello everyone! I'm looking keywords and research on the formation of intentional networks in entrepreneurial and other business networks (through networking organizations, conferences, etc.): - Research on deliberately created networks (such as networking organizations) especially using social media methods - How the intentions affect the structure of a network (i.e., metrics like centrality, path length, etc.) (if at all) - Methods for using social media to measure (especially) newly created network ties (i.e., longitudinal studies of newly formed networks on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) Thank you so much! SPECIAL ISSUE NOW AVAILABLE, INTERCULTURAL NEW MEDIA RESEARCH
by info＠interculturalnewmedia.com 13 Dec '11

13 Dec '11

I wanted to alert everyone to the current issue of the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication which focuses on Intercultural New Media Research. A groundbreaking inquiry, the issue/forum examines the intersection between intercultural communication and new media. The special issue/forum can be read and downloaded at no charge by clicking the following Taylor and Francis link: [1]http://www.tandfonline.com/rjii Best, Bob Robert Shuter Editor, Special Issue JIIC Director, Center for Intercultural New Media Research ([2]www.interculturalnewmedia.com) -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [Air-L] CFP:_Bulletin_of_Science,_Technology ,_&_Society__Special_Issue_on_Video_Games From: Jenn Martin <[3]lists(a)jennmartin.com> Date: Sun, December 11, 2011 6:22 pm To: [4]air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org The *Bulletin of Science, Technology, & Society* invites submissions for a special issue dealing with video games. As video and computer games have increased in accessibility, influence, and cultural prominence, they have had a significant impact on many facets of society, culture, and our attitudes toward technology, including entertainment, industry, play, education, identity, community, and art. At the same time they have provoked both popular and academic debate and controversy over their perceived benefits and issues. In addressing these claims and concerns, video games have become an important focus of academic work as scholars seek to better understand their impact on the people who play them and on culture and society in general. We invite submissions to a special issue of the *Bulletin of Science, Technology, & Society* that further this body of work by critically engaging with video games and their implications. Video games are an ideal subject for interdisciplinary research and discussion, as they can be analysed using a variety of theoretical lenses and methodological approaches including those of social science, anthropology, technology history and technology studies, media, political economy, and the hard sciences. Therefore, this issue is open to critical perspectives on video games in culture and society from any discipline. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to: - the history and progression of video games - video game industries (software and/or hardware) - political economy and economics - theories of play - issues and benefits of video games - players, audiences, and reception - gaming cultures and communities - avatars, digital bodies, and identity - representations of age, race, and gender - video games in education - serious gaming Interested scholars should submit an abstract of up to 500 words for consideration. Submissions should be emailed to Jennifer Martin at [5]jmart9(a)uwo.ca by January 15, 2012. We aim to make decisions regarding abstract acceptance by January 22, 2012. Full papers will be due by March 1, 2012 for peer review. Correspondence may be directed by email to [6]jmart9(a)uwo.ca or by fax at 519-661-3506. Additionally, phone messages may also be left with Tim Blackmore at 519-661-2111 ext. 88513. _______________________________________________ The [7]Air-L(a)listserv.aoir.org mailing list is provided by the Association of Internet Researchers [8]http://aoir.org Subscribe, change options or unsubscribe at: [9]http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org Join the Association of Internet Researchers: [10]http://www.aoir.org/ References 1. http://www.tandfonline.com/rjii 2. http://www.interculturalnewmedia.com/ 3. mailto:lists@jennmartin.com 4. mailto:air-l@listserv.aoir.org 5. mailto:jmart9@uwo.ca 6. mailto:jmart9@uwo.ca 7. mailto:Air-L@listserv.aoir.org 8. http://aoir.org/ 9. http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org 10. http://www.aoir.org/

Eric Kluitenberg, Legacies of Tactical Media (INC Network Notebooks 05)
by Geert Lovink 13 Dec '11

13 Dec '11

http://networkcultures.org/wpmu/portal/publications/network-notebooks/no-5-… Tactical Media employ the ‘tactics of the weak’ to operate on the terrain of strategic power by means of ‘any media necessary’. Once the rather exclusive practice of politically engaged artists and activists, the tactical appropriations of media tools and distribution infrastructures by the disenfranchised and the disgruntled have moved from the margins to centre stage. The explosive growth of mass participation in self-mediation incountless blogs, video sharing platforms, micro-blog ging, social networking has created an unprecedented complexity in the info-sphere. While this frenzy of media activity has been heralded as the catalyst of the new democratisation movements in North-Africa and the Middle- East, the anti-austerity/precarity movements in Southern Europe and the UK, and the recent #occupy movements in the US and Northern Europe, its increasingly intransparent complexity combined with the post 9/11 ‘crash of symbols’ has thrown its political efficacy into question. The demise of WikiLeaks as the crown jewel of on-line whistle-blowing has added to a thoroughly opaque picture. More than ever tactical media operators require effective instruments to the create tactical cartographies they need to navigate the hybrid realities they are immersed in. This notebook traces the legacies of tactical media to begin creating these hybrid cartographies. about the author: Eric Kluitenberg is an independent theorist and writer on culture, media and technology. book announcement: Cybernetic Revolutionaries
by Eden Medina 12 Dec '11

12 Dec '11

Dear all: Apologies for cross posting. Just a short note to announce the publication of my book Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende’s Chile, which was just released from MIT Press. It may be of interest to those engaged with the relationship of technology and politics; the use of ICTs for structural change in society; value-centered and participatory design; computer use outside of the U.S. and Europe, and the history of computer and communication technologies. I am pasting the back cover blurb below. More information about the book is available at: http://www.cyberneticrevolutionaries.com. Best wishes for the holidays, Eden ---- Book Summary: In Cybernetic Revolutionaries, Eden Medina tells the history of two intersecting utopian visions, one political and one technological. The first was Chile’s experiment with peaceful socialist change under Salvador Allende; the second was the simultaneous attempt to build a computer system that would manage Chile’s economy. Neither vision was fully realized—Allende’s government ended with a violent military coup; the system, known as Project Cybersyn, was never completely implemented—but they hold lessons for today about the relationship between technology and politics. Drawing on extensive archival material and interviews, Medina examines the cybernetic system envisioned by the Chilean government—which was to feature holistic system design, decentralized management, human-computer interaction, a national telex network, near real-time control of the growing industrial sector, and modeling of the behavior of dynamic systems. She also describes, and documents with photographs, the network’s Star Trek-like operations room, which featured swivel chairs with armrest control panels, a wall of screens displaying data, and flashing red lights to indicate economic emergencies. Studying Project Cybersyn today helps us understand not only the technological ambitions of a government in the midst of political change but also the limitations of the Chilean revolution. This history further shows how human attempts to combine the political and the technological with the goal of creating a more just society can open new technological, intellectual, and political possibilities. Technologies, Medina writes, are historical texts; when we read them we are reading history. -- Eden Medina Assistant Professor of Informatics Adjunct Assistant Professor of History School of Informatics and Computing Indiana University, Bloomington edenm(a)indiana.edu www.edenmedina.com Learn about "Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende's Chile" (MIT Press, 2011) @ www.cyberneticrevolutionaries.com
