Second CFP - CATaC'12 - June 18-20, 2012 - Aarhus, Denmark: keynote speaker announced
by Charles Ess 02 Dec '11

02 Dec '11

Dear AoIRists, with the usual apologies for duplications and cross-postings - but please forward to relevant lists and potentially interested students and colleagues: CATaC¹12 (Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication) Second Call for Papers Conference theme: Beyond the digital/cultural divide: in/visibility and new media. The conference will take place June 18-20, 2012, at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark. Please see <http://www.catacconference.org/> for more details. AoIRists will understand our very great pleasure in announcing that our first keynote speaker is Dr. Rasha Abdullah (Associate Professor and Chair of the Journalism & Mass Communication Department, The American University in Cairo). Provisional title: ³Lessons from Egypt: the roles and limits of social media in political activism and transformation.² As AoIRists will know, Dr. Rasha Abdullah has researched digital media and social media usages and their impacts in the Egyptian and Arab contexts for over a decade. In particular, Dr. Abdullah was among the first to examine how blogging practices could circumvent state censorship and thereby foster greater dialogue, freedom of expression, and political dissent. Her own blog posts both contributed to and helped document the Egyptian revolution of 2011, while at the same time critically correcting Western enthusiasms for so-called Facebook or Twitter Revolutions. Additional keynote speaker to be confirmed. The biennial CATaC conference series, begun in 1998, has become a premier international forum for current research on the complex interactions between culturally-variable norms, practices, and communication preferences, and interaction with the design, implementation and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Our 2012 conference, as the title suggests, begins with the recognition that the ongoing issues and challenges clustering around digital divides - often involving mutually reinforcing cultural divides - extends beyond classic and stubborn problems of access to new media and communication technologies. For example, matters of representation come into play, issuing in a cluster of questions: - Whose images and words are seen/presented/promoted and whose aren't? And why? If activists are using new media to represent realities of, say, oppressed indigenous people in a given country, is this better than no visibility at all, even if the people in question do not have access or skills to present themselves as subjects? - In particular: Local and indigenous HCI/ID is about making visible the semiotic scripts and political processes of meaning construction that shape the process of technology design and knowledge representation from a sociotechnical perspective. Making visible these scripts enables the assessment of the value of these tools and frameworks from indigenous and/or local perspectives. Key concerns here are (1) to examine the meaning and validity of democratic values that drive participatory design as a discipline, and (2) to question 'exported' representations of what constitutes good usability and user experience. And: - How do new practices of cloaking messages in otherwise public or semi-public media; for example, the strategies of online steganography work to create intentional invisibility in otherwise visible spaces? Are there important culturally-variable elements in these practices that, when brought to the foreground, help illuminate and clarify them in new ways? Finally: - What are the role(s) of (culturally) diverse understandings and representations of gender in structuring the frameworks and practices of design and implementation. How do these roles foster the visibility of some vis-a-vis the invisibility of 'others' (in Levinas' sense, in particular)? Additional submissions are encouraged that address further conference points of emphasis: - Theoretical and practical approaches to analyzing 'culture' - New layers of imaging and texting interactions fostering and/or threatening cultural diversity - Impact of mobile technologies on privacy and surveillance - Gender, sexuality and identity issues in social networks - Cultural diversity in e-learning and/or m-learning - Culturally-variable approaches to online identity management/creation, privacy, trust Copyright and intellectual property rights: recent developments, culturally-variable future directions - Culturally-variable responses to commodification in online environments Both short (3-5 pages) and long (10-15 pages) original papers are sought for presentation. Panel proposals addressing a specific theme or topic are also encouraged. Our provisional schedule: Submission of papers (short or full), panel proposals: 17 February 2012 Notification of acceptance: 16 March 2012 Final formatted papers (for conference proceedings): 19 April 2012 Conference: 18-20 June 2012 Further details regarding program (including keynote speakers and pre-conference activities), registration fees, travel and accommodations will be available soon on the conference website, http://www.catacconference.org/. Re: [Air-L] blogs and confidentiality
by Shannon M. Oltmann 01 Dec '11

01 Dec '11

I recently dealt with a similar issue for my dissertation--not blogs, but other ppublicly available information. I worked with a research ethicist on my campus (see http://poynter.indiana.edu/) to address the ethical concerns in a responsible way; I thought the suggestions might be useful for a broader audience here. I interviewed folks involved with, or working for, the federal government about fairly sensitive topics. Several people were concerned about remaining annonymous because our frank discussions could have implications for their current or future jobs, contracts, colleagues, and so on. To address their concerns, I created pseudonyms for each person (even if they did not explicitly ask for confidentiality) and obscured their job titles and agencies/departments to provide further protection. (This approach was approved by my IRB.) My problem was that many respondents had also given Congressional testimony and depositions and conducted interviews with the media; in each of these publicly available instances, their real names were used. I thought I might want to use some quotations from these sources, but it would create a problem with confidentiality. Say I interviewed "Bob" and used this pseudonym to protect his identity, but in another section I used a quotation from "Bob's" Congressional testimony. Any interested party could easily locate "Bob's" testimony online, with his real name, thus breaking his pseudonym and creating the possibility for harmful effects. I could solve the problem by using two different pseudonyms for one individual (one for the interview data and one for the testimony), but that creates additional ethical concerns--now I'm stating/implying that I have data from two different people when there is only one person. To handle this potential problem, I divided my participants into several groups: 1. People who gave an interview but did not have relevant testimony. I used their pseudonyms and did not have an ethical dilemma here. 2. People who gave no interview, but had publicly available testimony. I could use their actual names, because I did not promise confidentiality and their names are already connected to their testimony. 3. People who gave an interview, had relevant testimony, and explicitly asked for anonymity. If I wanted their testimony, I would need to ask them for permission to use their testimony and ask if they wanted two different pseudonyms. I would have to be okay with not using their testimony if they asked me not to use it. 4. People who gave an interview, had relevant testimony, and explicitly said they did not care about anonymity. I should treat this group the same as #3 above, since these respondents may not have considered their public testimony. 5. People who gave an interview, had relevant testimony, and did not make an explicit statement about wanting anonymity. I should treat this group the same as #3 above, since these respondents also may not have considered their public testimony. Essentially, the research ethicist and I determined that the most ethical approach was to clear the use of publicly available testimony/information with my respondents. This would likely result in me being unable to use some testimony, but it was the position with which I was most comfortable. As it turned out, I avoided the ethical problems altogether. Although many interview respondents did have relevant testimony, there was not critical information in the testimony; I was able to successfully build my dissertation without using their testimony. I did use the testimony from two people who did not provide interviews, and in those cases I was comfortable using their real names. To apply my experience to the discussion at hand: interview the bloggers, then determine if you really, really need to quote from their blogs. If you do, then you should ask them how they would like it to be handled. This may not be required by your IRB or dissertation advisors or the AIR community here, but it seems like a reasonable, ethical approach to the problem. -Shannon Shannon M. Sorry for Cross-listing. We invite you to attend a iConference workshop "Cultivating Reflective Practices in Computer-Mediated Distributed Teamwork", Feb 7th, 2012, Toronto Reflective Practice is an important part of professional work. Although there have been numerous studies about the design to support distributed teamwork, we have very limited knowledge about how to foster reflective practices in their activities. This workshop aims at seeding such a research endeavor through a research discussion about the pressing need for cultivating reflective practices in computer-mediated distributed teamwork. Specifically, we solicit position papers about one or more of the following research themes and the related research questions: 1.Understanding reflective practices in distributed teamwork. Example of related research questions: In what circumstance is reflection enhanced or increased? When is it discouraged? 2. Critical factors of the reflective practices in distributed teamwork Example of related research questions: How are an individual’s reflective practices impacted by the team context? How does an individual’s reflective practice affect his or her group’s practices? 3. Methodology for identifying and evaluating reflective practices in distributed teamwork Example of related research questions: How do researchers evaluate the reflective practices? How are these techniques similar and/or different when examining individual reflective practices and group reflective practices? 4.Socio-technical approaches for fostering reflective practice in distributed teamwork Example of related research questions: What roles might members be encouraged to play that matter most to reflective practices? Which are the best ways of supporting the development of group reflective practice in the context? We invite you to submit a position paper (up to 3 pages in length—as PDF files conforming to ACM style( http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates) Submission deadline: Dec. 15th Notification of acceptance: Jan. 15th Please send you submission to lxiao24(a)uwo.ca with the subject “Workshop submission”. by Christopher Mascaro 30 Nov '11

30 Nov '11

Online dating sites are a unique laboratory for understanding human relationship initiation, development and self-identified success. To date, online dating research has been scattered across disciplines. An integrated, interdisciplinary view of how this most basic human activity occurs through technology is now required. The iConference is an ideal venue for initiating this discourse, since the community itself is interdisciplinary. This workshop is targeted for the online dating curious researcher; those who are interested in beginning research in the area or who may have ongoing research that may connect to online dating. We have established a preliminary framework of areas that deserve further research based on a review of existing literature and current work that we will be presenting at the iConference. We hope to address the following areas that we have identified or other topics of interest to participants. 1. *User motivation for joining online dating* 2. *Profile Attributes* 1. *Information seeking behavior of individuals * 1. *Communication activity on the website* 1. *Access mechanisms for online dating sites* 1. *Social media utilization for due diligence of online dates* 1. *When do individuals stop* We ask that you express your interest to attend the workshop no later than December 15 by emailing iconferenceonlinedating(a)gmail.com. We also ask that you provide a brief abstract (*A few sentences*) detailing your interest in online dating or how your research applies to the topic no later than January 15, 2012. FINAL REMINDER: CFP for A Special Issue on Transnational HCI
by Irina Shklovski 30 Nov '11

30 Nov '11

Apologies for cross-posting. ****** Call for Papers (for the full text of this call please see: http://www.itu.dk/people/irsh/THCIcfp.pdf) ****** A special issue of Human-Computer Interaction "Transnational HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions Considered Globally" Deadline for proposals: December 1, 2011 Special issue editors: Irina Shklovski IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark Janet Vertesi Princeton University, USA Silvia Lindtner University of California, Irvine, USA Lucy Suchman Lancaster University, UK HCI researchers are increasingly interested in understanding the role of technology in relation to global processes. ICT4D (Information and Communication Technologies for Development), emerging markets, new forms of mobility, and the internationalization of organizations dominate contemporary conversations about information and communication technology. Whether in academia or industry, all agree that technology design and research today must consider the role these globalizing processes play in the way people collaborate, interact and exchange ideas across national and cultural boundaries. The focus of this special issue is on the relations between transnational processes and technology practice, design and research. We are especially interested in characterizing the theoretical, methodological, and empirical challenges of our work in transnational settings in a way that will be useful for future research and design in this area. For example, what analytical and methodological frames from within the HCI tradition offer new approaches to this empirical context, and which of our existing frames require reconsideration? How does "Transnational HCI" engage with or challenge ICT4D or Reflexive HCI? Thinking interdisciplinarily, what can the broader HCI community learn by drawing on work in other disciplines, such as information studies, anthropology, media and cultural studies, communications, science and technology studies? How can HCI contribute a novel perspective on transnationalism and technology to those disciplines as well? We encourage papers that represent a variety of disciplinary perspectives and analytical approaches. True to the "transnational" perspective, submissions do not have to be limited to "developing world" sites. Examples of topics that fall into the scope of this special issue include but are not limited to: . The network society: global flows, frictions and politics in local-global technology use . Cross-cultural collaboration and culture as encounter . Communication and collaboration across boundaries (not just the nation-state) . Diaspora communities, the politics of international migration, and technology . Use of information and communication technologies in censorship state zones . The role of information and communication technologies in reconfiguring "the local" . Political, local and translocal in new technological sites . Technology design and use in constructing, reproducing, or enforcing notions of global connectedness or local community . The role of technology in preserving versus undermining cultural identity . Mobility and circulation in constructing or moving between the local and the global . Methods for analysis and design in complex, hybrid, or virtual transnational spaces . The relationship between the researcher, designer and user in transnational collaborative projects This special issue follows upon two successful workshops: the Ubicomp 2010 workshop "Transnational Times" organized by Shklovski, Lindtner, Vertesi, and Dourish, and the CHI 2011 workshop "Transnational HCI" organized by Vertesi, Lindtner and Shklovski. *Important Dates* Deadline for proposals: December 1, 2011 Response to authors: January 5, 2012 Full papers due: April 2, 2012 Reviews to authors: July 16, 2012 Revised papers due: October 15, 2012 Reviews to authors: February 15, 2013 Final papers due: April 1, 2013 Submission of proposals Proposals should be at least 1000 words and provide a clear indication of what the paper will be about. Proposals should be submitted by email to the special issue editors (transnationaltimes(a)gmail.com) Mention explicitly in the email that your submission is intended for this special issue. The proposals will be evaluated for relevance to the special issue themes and guidance will be given. The full paper submissions will be peer reviewed to the usual standards of HCI. -- ============================================== Irina Shklovski Assistant Professor Design, Culture, Mobility& Communication (DCMC) IT University of Copenhagen Rued Langgaards Vej, 7 2300, Copenhagen S. Re: [Air-L] Fully funded PhD position on Social Networking Sites in Turkey (Heather Horst)
by Seda Guerses 30 Nov '11

30 Nov '11

> > At present all these posts are full except one, which is the study of Turkey since the person I had selected for that position took up another post while we were waiting to hear if we got the grant. The post is a fully funded PhD for four years including fees and maintenance, based on full time research with no teaching expected. The topic has to follow that of the project as comparative with the other six countries. One problem is that the student has to be from the EU i.e. eligible to pay home rather than overseas fees at a UK university, which unfortunately excludes students based in Turkey. But if you know of anyone who speaks Turkish, has some qualification in anthropology and would like to do a PhD on social networking sites, please is this a new practice? what i read here suggests that non-eu students in the uk not only have to pay the really high fees but that they no longer qualify for grants. :( i am happy to disseminate the opening. luckily there are a lot of eu citizens that speak turkish, although the citizenship part is usually more difficult than having the turkish speaking part. ;) finally, i am very curious to see what comes out of your research, so please keep us posted! :) best, s. > have them contact me at d.miller(a)ucl.ac.uk, the selection will be made in January, and the position starts 1st October 2012 > > Daniel Miller > Anthropology UCL > > Heather A.
