Twitter Panel Question We're searching for a free Twitter panel, or options for reaching a fairly representative sample of Twitter users for a brief survey about Twitter use. Does anyone have any suggestions to help us move beyond snowball or seed sampling? Both are decent options in this case, but we're wondering if there are any stronger (and hopefully free/cheap) options out there. -Avery, UT Austin Avery Holton PhD Student / David Bruton Fellow School of Journalism Disabilities Studies Doctoral Portfolio Texas Center for Disabilities Studies University of Texas at Austin averyholton(a)gmail.com @averyholton

Fully funded PhD position on Social Networking Sites in Turkey
by Heather Horst 29 Nov '11

29 Nov '11

This new position may be of interest to MA students on the AoIR list or faculty with students interested in SNS. Forwarded on behalf of Danny Miller... Fully Funded PhD on social networking sites in Turkey I am not unhappy to note that I have received a grant to study social networking sites in seven countries over the next five years. The countries in question will be Brazil, China, India, Romania, Turkey, Trinidad and the UK. The team will be entirely comprised of anthropologists and the method will be traditional ethnography in a small town in each country. It will be a mix of post-doctoral and post-graduate studies. The topic will be all aspects of social networking sites within the general context of polymedia. At present all these posts are full except one, which is the study of Turkey since the person I had selected for that position took up another post while we were waiting to hear if we got the grant. The post is a fully funded PhD for four years including fees and maintenance, based on full time research with no teaching expected. The topic has to follow that of the project as comparative with the other six countries. One problem is that the student has to be from the EU i.e. eligible to pay home rather than overseas fees at a UK university, which unfortunately excludes students based in Turkey. But if you know of anyone who speaks Turkish, has some qualification in anthropology and would like to do a PhD on social networking sites, please have them contact me at d.miller(a)ucl.ac.uk, the selection will be made in January, and the position starts 1st October 2012 Daniel Miller Anthropology UCL Heather A. Special Issue Media and Migration: Learning in a globalized World
by Haan, M.J. de (Mariette) 29 Nov '11

29 Nov '11

Dear all, *Apologies for cross-posting* This call for proposal for a special issue on Media and Migration: Learning in a globalized world might be of interest to some of this list. Learning, Media and Technology Call for papers - special issue Media and migration: learning in a globalized world Learning, Media and Technology is acknowledged as one of the learning academic journals in the fields of educational technology and educational media. Proposals are invited for papers for a special issue of the journal on the theme of "Media and migration: learning in a globalized world". The special issue will be edited by Mariëtte de Haan (Utrecht University) and Kevin Leander (Vanderbilt University). This special issue will bring together studies located at the intersection of migration, media and learning. The change in the mobilities of people, media, material goods that allow new connections between 'global' and 'local' life marks contemporary migration as well as social life more generally. >From the perspective of how young people's lives are formed and develop, these developments provide differently distributed resources from which youth can draw, and different processes through which identities, social networks, and knowledge may be constructed. In this issue research is brought together that considers how learning practices of youth in migration are shaped by new media. See here http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/cfp/cjemcfp3.pdf for more information Hope some of this community will contribute! best, Mariette de Haan Prof. Mariëtte de Haan Utrecht University I Faculty of Social Sciences I Langeveld Institute, Heidelberglaan 1, 3584 CS Utrecht I The Netherlands I M.deHaan(a)uu.nl<mailto:M.deHaan@uu.nl> I http://staff.fss.uu.nl/mdehaan I http://www.uu.nl/wiredup I http://www.uu.nl/pedgemeenschap

Dialogue Cafe: Computation and the Humanities - Revisiting a Silent Revolution
by Nishant Shah 29 Nov '11

29 Nov '11

Dear All, Please do come if you are in Bangalore, and do help us in putting the word out. *The Dialogue Cafe *The Centre for Internet and Society announces the launch of its dialogue cafe, where every month, we approach seminal thinkers, scholars and practitioners to help explore knowledge paradigms that help us understand and research techno-social realities through innovative thought, concepts and frameworks. The dialogue cafe draws upon different disciplines, histories, perspectives and intellectual legacies in order to respond to a seminal piece of writing that has changed, challenged and shaped the contours of interdisciplinary science and technology studies. The dialogue cafe initiates several strands of dialogues — between critical thinkers and canonical texts, between different paradigm of knowledges that interact with digital and internet technologies, and between interlocutors located in different disciplines, to initiate critical thought/work for new and innovative research in the field of Internet and Society. For its first brew of conversations, the Dialogue Cafe serves you... *Computation and the Humanities: Revisiting a Silent Revolution* Steve Jobs’ comments on how “technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities” made Apple hearts sing is today widely re-circulated, but not fully comprehended. We often take this to be the mark of one man’s genius, rather than the symptom of a broader interdisciplinary history. Noted Artificial Intelligence scholar Philip Agre recalls, “When I was a graduate student in artificial intelligence, the humanities were not held in high regard. They were vague and woolly, they employed impenetrable jargons, and they engaged in "meta-level bickering that never decides anything". What happened, in the formative decades of Jobs and Agre’s generation, to bring technology and the humanities into conversation? What have the results been, other than well-designed personal computational devices, and what is the significance for us? On December 2, 2011, the Centre for Internet and Society invites you to a Dialogue Cafe, where we engage in exploring what this all means and what kinds of labour it might take to ‘marry’ these disparate ways of knowing. As a response to Philip Agre’s seminal essay on “Critical Technology Practice”, the cafe will begin with an exposition by *Kavita Philip*(University of California, Irvine), opening up into a critical response spearheaded by Cherry Matthew, and leading to a larger dialogue with the audience, exploring fault lines of interdisciplinary research and challenges of integrated technology studies. For more background on these questions, audience is encouraged (but not required) to explore the materials at Agre’s home page http://polaris.gseis.ucla.edu/pagre/, and STS related links from Wikipedia’s page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science,_technology_and_society Please make sure you get a spot by registering with us: Send an email to Prasad(a)cis-india.org to confirm your presence. -- Nishant Shah Director (Research), Centre for Internet and Society,( www.cis-india.org ) Asia Awards Fellow, 2008-09 # 00-91-9740074884 http://www.facebook.com/nishant.shah http://cis-india.academia.edu/NishantShah

Re: [Air-L] blogs and confidentiality
by Philippa Smith 28 Nov '11

28 Nov '11

Not really wishing to extend this thread too much longer - but just wanted to back up Terri's suggestion of involving the blogger in the research. While I interviewed the blogger of the site I was discursively analysing, I also arranged as part of my ethics procedure to send her my work in progress for feedback. I found that my interpretation of her postings as well as the construction of her website sometimes differed from her views given that we had different ethnic backgrounds and experiences. I was able to relate this in my research to show the transparency of my interpretive processes and given that I was analysing identity construction, the blogger's involvement indeed showed the complexity of how we view ourselves and others, and how that we can interpret identity differently. That's my five cents worth. Back to the analysis... Philippa Philippa K Smith PhD Candidate Institute of Culture, Discourse & Communication AUT University Auckland New Zealand >>> Terri Senft <tsenft(a)gmail.com> 11/29/11 5:46 AM >>> Hi pals, Can I pose an alternative way of looking at this, one based on principles of regard rather than rule of law? I'm going to write a little rant, and then I promise to never say anything more on this, at least not on our list :) The Rant: Instead of trying to figure out on an academic listserve what is private and what is public on a blog, what if we let the people who are writing these words decide? A radical proposal: treat everything on a health-related blog as private, until you make a relationship with the author to do an interview, either via email or in person. Then, as part of the interview process, explain TO THE INTERVIEWEE what you felt was compelling about their writing --for scholarship, for health advocacy, etc. After you've expressed your thoughts, you ask them permission to quote from their work. This would require two layers of consent. The first would be the interview consent form; the second would be the permission to quote parts of the blog form. I suggest you tell them precisely what it is you are thinking of quoting, since health advocacy issues are tricky and what is sensitive stuff for one person might be run of the mill for another. The interviewee could choose one, or both options for consent. As a researcher, I've done this in the past with all sorts of success and recommend it for two reasons. First, it's a way of acknowledging your interviewee as a writer, which is different than acknowledging him/her a a speaker, regardless of whether or not you are typing during the interview. Second, and perhaps more important, this process has always gotten me clearer on my reasons for taking someone else's thoughts out of one context, and putting them into another, and the political ramifications of such a re-arrangement. And one more thought: If you are really interested in making connections to these communities of bloggers, and I assume you are or why else study them, you might even show them what you've written after you've done your analysis. I've done this in my own research and it's provided me with amazing follow-up material. Plus, it's a way of thanking people for their time and thoughts. Sorry if this feels like I am advocating more work. It can see how it might seem like that, but trust me when I say the work will be front-loaded. The world doesn't need another conference paper, dissertation or book that comes to the conclusion that impartial observation is a ridiculous notion--especially when it comes to researching advocacy communities. We freaking KNOW this already. What we need is research that engages with the ethical and epistemological issues that arise from this knowing. One way to get at those issues would be to actually communicate with the individuals writing the words we hope to take for our scholarship, aka our "subjects." Think and write deeply on those interactions, and your work will be published, I guarantee. Avoid these interactions because it will be easier to push your project past committees, and your research will die a pretty obscure death. I'm advocating paying now, so you don't pay later. Friends, we know we aren't intrepid reporters, and internet research isn't like cracking Watergate. It would be awesome if we stopped behaving like it was. I cannot tell you how many colleagues don't want their classroom lectures podcast because while they know they are in a public forum, they feel resistant to having their thoughts broadcast in a super-public environment. How is a 'public' conversation meant for a health forum that is then transported to your book any different? Honestly, would it kill us to talk to people outside the academy as equals, with the same rights to ownership of their thoughts and expression as the rest of us want? Of course it wouldn't. Let's start doing it. Social Science PhD Internships at Microsoft Research New England (Spring & Summer 2012)
by danah boyd 28 Nov '11

28 Nov '11

Microsoft Research New England (MSRNE) is looking for PhD interns to join the social media collective for Spring and Summer 2012. For these positions, we are looking primarily for social science PhD students (including communications, sociology, anthropology, media studies, information studies, etc.). The Social Media Collective is a collection of scholars at MSRNE who focus on socio-technical questions, primarily from a social science perspective. We are not an applied program; rather, we work on critical research questions that are important to the future of social science scholarship. MSRNE internships are 12-week paid internships in Cambridge, Massachusetts. PhD interns at MSRNE are expected to devise and execute a research project during their internships. The expected outcome of an internship at MSRNE is a publishable scholarly paper for an academic journal or conference of the intern’s choosing. The goal of the internship is to help the intern advance their own career; interns are strongly encouraged to work towards a publication outcome that will help them on the academic job market. Interns are also expected to collaborate with full-time researchers and visitors, give short presentations, and contribute to the life of the community. While this is not an applied program, MSRNE encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with computer scientists, economists, and mathematicians. There are also opportunities to engage with product groups at Microsoft, although this is not a requirement. Topics that are currently of interest to the social media collective include: privacy & publicity, internet public policy research, online safety (from sexting to bullying to gang activities), technology and human trafficking, transparency & surveillance, conspicuous consumption & brand culture, news & information flow, and locative media. That said, we are open to other interesting topics, particularly those that may have significant societal impact. While most of the researchers in the collective are ethnographers, we welcome social scientists of all methodological persuasions. Applicants should have advanced to candidacy in their PhD program or be close to advancing to candidacy. (Unfortunately, there are no opportunities for Master’s students at this time.) While this internship opportunity is not strictly limited to social scientists, preference will be given to social scientists and humanists making socio-technical inquiries. (Note: While other branches of Microsoft Research focus primarily on traditional computer science research, this group does no development-driven research and is not looking for people who are focused solely on building systems at this time. We welcome social scientists with technical skills and strongly encourage social scientists to collaborate with computer scientists at MSRNE.) Preference will be given to intern candidates who work to make public and/or policy interventions with their research. Interns will benefit most from this opportunity if there are natural opportunities for collaboration with other researchers or visitors currently working at MSRNE. Applicants from universities outside of the United States are welcome to apply. PEOPLE AT MSRNE SOCIAL MEDIA COLLECTIVE The Social Media Collective is organized by Senior Researcher danah boyd (http://www.danah.org) and includes Postdoctoral Researchers Mike Ananny (http://www.stanford.edu/~mja/) Alice Marwick (http://www.tiara.org/) and Andrés Monroy-Hernández (http://www.mit.edu/~amonroy/) Spring faculty visitors will include T.L. Taylor (IT University of Copenhangen) and Eszter Hargittai (Northwestern University). Summer visitors are TBD. Previous interns in the collective have included Amelia Abreu (UWashington information), Scott Golder (Cornell sociology), Germaine Halegoua (U. Wisconsin, communications) Jessica Lingel (Rutgers library & info science), Laura Noren (NYU sociology), Omar Wasow (Harvard African-American studies), and Sarita Yardi (GeorgiaTech HCI). Previous and current faculty MSR visitors to the collective include: Alessandro Acquisti, Beth Coleman, Bernie Hogan, Christian Sandvig, Helen Nissenbaum, James Grimmelmann, Judith Donath, Jeff Hancock, Kate Crawford, Karrie Karahalios, Lisa Nakamura, Mary Gray, Nalini Kotamraju, Nancy Baym, Nicole Ellison, and Tarleton Gillespie. If you are curious to know more about MSRNE, I suspect that many of these people would be happy to tell you about their experiences here. Previous interns are especially knowledgeable about how this process works. For more information about the Social Media Collective, visit our blog: http://socialmediacollective.org/ APPLICATION PROCESS To apply for a PhD internship with the social media collective: 1. Fill out the online application form: <a href="https://research.microsoft.com/apps/tools/jobs/intern.aspx">https://research.microsoft.com/apps/tools/jobs/intern.aspx</a> Make sure to indicate that you prefer Microsoft Research New England and "social media" or "social computing." You will need to list two recommenders through this form. Make sure your recommenders respond to the request for letters. 2. Send an email to msrnejob -at- microsoft-dot-com with the subject "SMC PhD Intern Application: <your name>" that includes the following four things: a. A brief description of your dissertation project. b. An academic article you have written (published or unpublished) that shows your writing skills. c. A copy of your CV d. A pointer to your website or other online presence (if available). e. A short description of 1-3 projects that you might imagine doing as an intern at MSRNE. We will begin considering internship applications on January 10 and consider applications until all social media internship positions are filled. PREVIOUS INTERN TESTIMONIALS "The internship at Microsoft Research was all of the things I wanted it to be - personally productive, intellectually rich, quiet enough to focus, noisy enough to avoid complete hermit-like cave dwelling behavior, and full of opportunities to begin ongoing professional relationships with other scholars who I might not have run into elsewhere." -- Laura Noren, Sociology, New York University "If I could design my own graduate school experience, it would feel a lot like my summer at Microsoft Research. I had the chance to undertake a project that I'd wanted to do for a long time, surrounded by really supportive and engaging thinkers who could provide guidance on things to read and concepts to consider, but who could also provoke interesting questions on the ethics of ethnographic work or the complexities of building an identity as a social sciences researcher. Overall, it was a terrific experience for me as a researcher as well as a thinker." -- Jessica Lingel, Library and Information Science, Rutgers University "Spending the summer as an intern at MSR was an extremely rewarding learning experience. Having the opportunity to develop and work on your own projects as well as collaborate and workshop ideas with prestigious and extremely talented researchers was invaluable. It was amazing how all of the members of the Social Media Collective came together to create this motivating environment that was open, supportive, and collaborative. Being able to observe how renowned researchers streamline ideas, develop projects, conduct research, and manage the writing process was a uniquely helpful experience – and not only being able to observe and ask questions, but to contribute to some of these stages was amazing and unexpected." -- Germaine Halegoua, Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin-Madison "The summer I spent at Microsoft Research was one of the highlights of my time in grad school. It helped me expand my research in new directions and connect with world-class scholars. As someone with a technical bent, this internship was an amazing opportunity to meet and learn from really smart humanities and social science researchers. Finally, Microsoft Research as an organization has the best of both worlds: the academic freedom and intellectual stimulation of a university with the perks of industry." -- Andrés Monroy-Hernández, Media, Arts and Sciences, MIT
