We are living in times of global capitalist crisis. In this situation, we are witnessing a return of critique in the form of a surging interest in critical theories (such as the critical political economy of Karl Marx, critical theory, etc) and revolutions, rebellions, and political movements against neoliberalism that are reactions to the commodification and instrumentalization of everything. On the one hand there are overdrawn claims that social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, mobile Internet, etc) have caused rebellions and uproars in countries like Tunisia and Egypt, which brings up the question to which extent these are claims are ideological or not. On the other hand, the question arises what actual role social media play in contemporary capitalism, power structures, crisis, rebellions, uproar, revolutions, the strengthening of the commons, and the potential creation of participatory democracy. The commodification of everything has resulted also in a commodification of the communication commons, including Internet communication that is today largely commercial in character. The question is how to make sense of a world in crisis, how a different future can look like, and how we can create Internet commons and a commons-based participatory democracy. This conference deals with the question of what kind of society and what kind of Internet are desirable, what steps need to be taken for advancing a good Internet in a sustainable information society, how capitalism, power structures and social media are connected, what the main problems, risks, opportunities and challenges are for the current and future development of Internet and society, how struggles are connected to social media, what the role, problems and opportunities of social media, web 2.0, the mobile Internet and the ubiquitous Internet are today and in the future, what current developments of the Internet and society tell us about potential futures, how an alternative Internet can look like, and how a participatory, commons-based Internet and a co-operative, participatory, sustainable information society can be achieved. Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to: * What does it mean to study the Internet, social media and society in a critical way? What are Critical Internet Studies and Critical Theories of Social Media? What does it mean to study the media and communication critically? * What is the role of the Internet and social media in contemporary capitalism? * How do power structures, exploitation, domination, class, digital labour, commodification of the communication commons, ideology, and audience/user commodification, and surveillance shape the Internet and social media? * How do these phenomena shape concrete platforms such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc? * How does contemporary capitalism look like? What is the role of the Internet and social media in contemporary capitalism? * In what society do we live? What is the actual role of information, ICTs, and knowledge in contemporary society? Are concepts like network society, information society, informational capitalism, etc adequate characterizations of contemporary society or overdrawn claims? What are the fundamental characteristics of contemporary society and which concept(s) should be used for describing this society? * What is digital labour and how do exploitation and surplus value generation work on the Internet? Which forms of exploitation and class structuration do we find on the Internet, how do they work, what are their commonalities and differences? How does the relation between toil and play change in a digital world? How do classes and class struggles look like in 21st century informational capitalism? * What are ideologies of the Internet, web 2.0, and social media? How can they be deconstructed and criticized? How does ideology critique work as an empirical method and theory that is applied to the Internet and social media? * Which philosophies, ethics and which philosophers are needed today in order to understand the Internet, democracy and society and to achieve a global sustainable information society and a participatory Internet? What are perspectives for political philosophy and social theory in 21st century information society? * What contradictions, conflicts, ambiguities, and dialectics shape 21st century information society and social media? * What theories are needed for studying the Internet, social media, web 2.0, or certain platforms or applications in a critical way? * What is the role of counter-power, resistance, struggles, social movements, civil society, rebellions, uproars, riots, revolutions, and political transformations in 21st century information society and how (if at all) are they connected to social media? * What is the actual role of social media and social networking sites in political revolutions, uproars, and rebellions (like the recent Maghrebian revolutions, contemporary protests in Europe and the world, the Occupy movement, etc)? * How can an alternative Internet look like and what are the conditions for creating such an Internet? What are the opportunities and challenges posed by projects like Wikipedia, WikiLeaks, Diaspora, IndyMedia, Democracy Now! and other alternative media? What is a commons-based Internet and how can it be created? * What is the role of ethics, politics, and activism for Critical Internet Studies? * What is the role of critical theories in studying the information society, social media, and the Internet? * What is a critical methodology in Critical Internet Studies? Which research methods are needed on how need existing research methods be adapted for studying the Internet and society in a critical way? * What are ethical problems, opportunities, and challenges of social media? How are they framed by the complex contradictions of contemporary capitalism? * Who and what and where are we in 21st century capitalist information society? How have different identities changed in the global world, what conflicts relate to it, and what is the role of class and class identity in informational capitalism? * What is democracy? What is the future of democracy in the global information society? And what is or should democracy be today? What is the relation of democracy and social media? How do the public sphere and the colonization of the public sphere look like today? What is the role of social media in the public sphere and its colonization? The conference is the fourth in the ICTs and Society-Conference Series (http://www.icts-and-society.net) The ICTs and Society-Network is an international forum that networks scholars in the interdisciplinary areas of Critical Internet Studies, digital media studies, Internet & society studies and information society studies. Fwd: Social Epistemology Collective launched on-line
by jeremy hunsinger 15 Nov '11

15 Nov '11

This is loosely connected to some people's interest here. Begin forwarded message: > From: "Fuller, Steve" <S.W.Fuller(a)WARWICK.AC.UK> > Subject: Social Epistemology Collective launched on-line > Date: November 15, 2011 2:42:30 PM EST > To: MERSENNE(a)JISCMAIL.AC.UK > Reply-To: "Fuller, Steve" <S.W.Fuller(a)WARWICK.AC.UK> > > This is sent on behalf of Elisabeth Simbuerger who can be contacted directly at elisabeth.simburger(a)mail.udp.cl > > > Dear colleagues, > > We are very pleased to announce the launch of the Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective (http://social-epistemology.com/) It is closely connected to the Taylor & Francis journal Social Epistemology. The Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective was founded in August 2010 by James Collier, the current executive editor of the Taylor & Francis journal Social Epistemology. The current editor of the collective (July 2011 to July 2012) is Elisabeth Simbürger. > > At the moment we have 18 members that are based in different countries and continents. Our disciplinary backgrounds are quite diverse, ranging from business administration, philosophy, sociology, history, literature to science and technology studies, biology and psychology, to name a few. Despite this diversity in discipline and outlook, our shared roof is the research program of social epistemology as outlined by Steve Fuller based on his first book Social Epistemology (Indiana University Press, 1988) and the Taylor & Francis journal Social Epistemology which he founded in 1987. > > Our aims > > This platform of intellectual exchange concerning themes that are paramount to Social Epistemology is a collective experiment in the making. Our main aims are showcasing our own work, being in a dialogue with the journal Social Epistemology and taking a stand on current themes of Social Epistemology – from biotechnology to current knowledge work in neoliberal university landscapes. The need for an online platform in addition to the journal Social Epistemology emerged from changes in knowledge production over the last years. Online platforms allow for a more immediate response to current issues that may be of interest to social epistemology. Yet, rather than questioning the value of traditional journals and articles, we see our collective work as complementary to the journal Social Epistemology and in close relation to it, merely adding new dimensions and formats of discussing it (also see Social Epistemology, 2010, 24 (3), Special Issue: ‘Scientific Publications 2.0. The End of the Scientific Paper?). Not only are we open to written input such as articles, short essays, book reviews, comments, meta-critiques, and aphorisms, but we also encourage visual formats such as films, images as well as any audio material (interviews etc.). As the title of our collective indicates, we predominantly see ourselves as a review and reply collective. > > Reviewing... > > We either individually or collectively review contemporary books and classics that are of interest to social epistemology. Besides, we aim for high quality work irrespective of the format by reviewing each other’s contributions. > > Replying.... > > Our online platform serves as a space of engaging with current events and themes that are relevant to social epistemology. As our online platform allows for faster responses than traditional journals, we are particularly interested in promoting shorter contributions. Moreover, the platform seeks to foster a meta-critical discussion of the journal Social Epistemology with replies to articles, a look at a particular topic addressed in the journal over time, blog postings on subjects and issues, replies from past authors and critical responses, commentaries and syntheses. We would like to encourage dialogues among Social Epistemology’s print and digital authors in the hopes that new approaches to writing, and writing about, academic inquiry might evolve from it. In this sense, the platform can also serve as a space for discussion of upcoming journal ideas or themes. > > A collective experiment in the making > > Collective work and academic exchange are often presented as ideal scenarios in knowledge work. However, as our own experience has shown us so far, working as a collective is by no means a straightforward and easy process. Being based in different parts of the world with many of us never having met in person, developing a collective dialogue is an even more challenging endeavour. Besides, the requirements of an academic career geared towards constant publishing and output in an era of quality assurance, seem to leave little space for activities beyond that such as collective work (See Stephen Norrie's paper Three Social Contracts for an Academic Collective). We would like to revisit our process of developing as a collective in a reflexive mode. Taking our own experience as a point of departure, one idea so far was to pay increased attention to the relationship between conditions of work at universities and knowledge work. > > Get involved! > > If you would like to be part of our collective or if you have an idea for a contribution, please get in touch with us via email: elisabeth.simburger(a)mail.udp.cl > > You can follow us here: http://social-epistemology.com/ > > > Best wishes on behalf of the Collective, > > > James Collier (Executive editor of Social Epistemology) > Elisabeth Simbuerger (Online editor Social Epistemology Review and Reply Collective) > > > -- > Dr Elisabeth Simbürger > Research fellow > Centro de Políticas Comparadas en Educación > Universidad Diego Portales > Vergara 210 > Santiago > Chile > > > > > Steve Fuller > Auguste Comte Chair in Social Epistemology > Dept of Sociology, Univ of Warwick > Coventry CV4 7AL, UK > Phone +44 2476 523 940. Consider telling TODAY the AP to stop using 'illegal immigrant' in style book
by Debashis Aikat 15 Nov '11

I am forwarding this message from my colleague, Professor Lucila Vargas, [lcvargas(a)email.unc.edu] of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication. >From Dr. Lucila Vargas [[lcvargas(a)email.unc.edu] Dear All, The AP Stylebook editors are asking for suggestions on what to change. The deadline is TODAY. It takes a minute. http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=social_media NAHJ suggests to use "undocumented person." I prefer NOT to use "undocumented" as a noun. The following text is an edited version of an email from Adelante, a Latina/o advocacy organization, which explains why journalists and editors shouldn't use the term illegal" Thanks, --Lucila "Despite pushback from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists1 and the Society of Professional Journalists 2, the AP still uses the phrase illegal immigrant. There are few words in the media that have done more damage to our community than the word illegal. Phrases like "illegal immigrant" make it easier for states like Alabama to pass horrific laws that treat people like me as less than human3. Whats important for the AP to know isnt just that the word illegal is dehumanizing and unfairly applied to Latinos, but its also legally innacurate. For every other legal matter journalists are very careful not to act as judge and jury. That is why, even in the face of overwhelming evidence, journalists always use the words like alleged when discussing an individual crime. Journalists and the AP, however, have not applied the same standards to immigrants, judging them as illegal before theyve ever been determined as such by any court of law. Tell the AP to stop acting as judge and jury and stop dehumanizing our community with the word illegal. http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=social_media If you need tips for what to write to the AP see this helpful guide from the folks at the Drop The I-Word campaign: http://colorlines.com/droptheiword/blog/take-action-now-tell-the-associated… References: 1. CFP: American Behavioral Scientist special issue on the role(s) of new media in social unrest. Please share as appropriate.(Call also available at: http://technosociology.org/?page_id=557) Guest editors:Zeynep Tufekci (University of North Carolina)Deen G. Freelon (American University) In recent years, new media have become increasingly prominent in contexts of social contention ranging from the election protests in Iran in 2009 to the more recent Arab uprisings, the social unrest in the United Kingdom, and the “Occupy” movement in the United States and elsewhere. Popular commentators and politicians have heaped both praise and blame upon new media as instigators of democratic uprisings or social unrest. We seek to deepen and contextualize this debate through theoretically-rich, empirically-grounded scholarly articles to be published in a special issue of the American Behavioral Scientist in the Summer/Fall of 2012. We invite contributions from a wide range of scholarly perspectives that examine the role of new media in contentious politics. All applicable theories, methods, and data are welcome. Possible article topics include: How does the diffusion of new media interact with dissent and/or social unrest in different contexts? How do ruling regimes use new media to monitor or otherwise undermine dissent? What factors condition more or less prominent roles for new media in protests? How do new and old media interact during periods of social unrest? What are differences and similarities in new media use for dissent in democratic and authoritarian countries? How do different actors use new media for contentious politics? Are new media primarily used by protest participants, geographically distant spectators, or both? What is the interaction between new media platforms and characteristics of social unrest? How do mainstream reporters/citizen journalists/artists/etc. use new media to report on protest events? Please send your article title, abstract, and a list of five potential reviewers to ABSunrest(a)gmail.com by December 14, writing “ABS [first author] abstract submission” in the Subject field. The submission of your abstract will help us identify reviewers and speed up the review process. Completed articles should be submitted by February 1, 2012 to ABSunrest(a)gmail.com, writing “ABS [first author] paper submission” in the Subject field be considered for inclusion. All articles will undergo peer review. Manuscripts should follow APA style and be limited to around 30 double-spaced pages.
