Swinburne Design Perspectives Lectures now available online
by Ken Friedman 23 Sep '11

23 Sep '11

Dear Colleagues, Over the past year, we have been holding our Design Perspectives Lectures on a regular basis. We've documented these on audio and video. When we first announced these, we had requests to make these accessible online, and we committed ourselves to making the lectures available via the web. We are happy to announce that you can now access these lectures via the Swinburne Design web site at URL: http://www.swinburne.edu.au/design/design-perspectives/ Eight lectures are now available online. Nigel Cross - Creative Thinking in Design Nigel Cross - Understanding Design Thinking Wendy Wong - Chinese Graphic Design History in Greater China SInce 1979 Keith Russell - Chocolate Bread, Sacred Rice: Continental Ways of Looking at Things Judith Gregory - Activity Theory as a "Trading Zone" for Design Research and Practice Kalevi Ekman - The Story Behind Aalto University's Design Factory Jacob Buur - User Centred Design Pi'ikea Clark - Expanding Design Education through Indigenous Design More lectures will be added as we complete the preparations. In some cases, we only have audio. I regret this, but our legal department informs us that we can't broadcast or publish some images without copyright clearance from the original copyright holder. An image that may be used for an education lecture in a single classroom or lecture hall falls within fair use provisions of the copyright act, while making it accessible online falls under those aspects of copyright law governing broadcasting and publishing. When possible, we now ask lecturers to use images for which they have permission, but the requirements of topic and theme determine the choice of images. At any rate, we make as much available as we can do. We hope eventually to make the lectures available in written form. Please visit our web site to enjoy the lectures -- five audio, two video, one in both audio and video. http://www.swinburne.edu.au/design/design-perspectives/ Best regards, Ken Professor Ken Friedman, PhD, DSc (hc), FDRS | University Distinguished Professor | Dean, Faculty of Design | Swinburne University of Technology | Melbourne, Australia | kenfriedman(a)groupwise.swin.edu.au | Ph: +61 3 9214 6078 | Faculty www.swinburne.edu.au/design

“Why Cyberbullying Rhetoric Misses the Mark"
by danah boyd 23 Sep '11

23 Sep '11

I wanted to share some exciting news... The New York Times just published an op-ed that Alice Marwick and I wrote entitled “Why Cyberbullying Rhetoric Misses the Mark.” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/opinion/why-cyberbullying-rhetoric-misses… It's based on a new paper that we wrote called "The Drama! Teen Conflict, Gossip, and Bullying in Networked Publics." The OII draft is available at SSRN: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1926349 Paper Abstract: While teenage conflict is nothing new, today’s gossip, jokes, and arguments often play out through social media like Formspring, Twitter, and Facebook. Although adults often refer to these practices with the language of “bullying,” teens are more likely to refer to the resultant skirmishes and their digital traces as “drama.” Drama is a performative set of actions distinct from bullying, gossip, and relational aggression, incorporating elements of them but also operating quite distinctly. While drama is not particularly new, networked dynamics reconfigure how drama plays out and what it means to teens in new ways. In this paper, we examine how American teens conceptualize drama, its key components, participant motivations for engaging in it, and its relationship to networked technologies. Drawing on six years of ethnographic fieldwork, we examine what drama means to teenagers and its relationship to visibility and privacy. We argue that the emic use of “drama” allows teens to distance themselves from practices which adults may conceptualize as bullying. As such, they can retain agency - and save face - rather than positioning themselves in a victim narrative. Drama is a gendered process that perpetrates conventional gender norms. It also reflects discourses of celebrity, particularly the mundane interpersonal conflict found on soap operas and reality television. For teens, sites like Facebook allow for similar performances in front of engaged audiences. Understanding how “drama” operates is necessary to recognize teens’ own defenses against the realities of aggression, gossip, and bullying in networked publics. We're really excited about this research so I had to share... danah

Virtual University Collaboration October 27 and 28
by Helen Farley 23 Sep '11

23 Sep '11

You are invited to participate in a first of a kind event, an in-world mixture of conference, workshop and collaboration, to discuss, design, build, operate and evaluate various virtual teaching and learning spaces for the university environment of the twenty-first century! This unique event will begin with an intensive two day in-world meeting that will consist of a series of plenary talks, small group discussions and report back sessions, workshops, tutorials, demonstrations and tours. Over the following 4 weeks some of the main ideas and concepts for virtual teaching, learning and meeting spaces developed by participants will be constructed on the new virtual university island (with assistance from professional SL builders). Then over the next 3 months participants will be able to book and use these spaces for their own teaching and learning sessions, role plays and meetings. During this time there will be informal follow-up and evaluation meetings. Traditional conferences last a few days and allow for ideas to be presented and for some follow-up discussion to occur. Standard workshops and tutorials often last a few hours or a day and while they often demonstrate and talk about skills they don't usually allow from much practice, testing or feedback on new ideas. We intend this new style of collaborative event to take the best of these traditional formats and add in the time and the facilities for extended collaboration which will see ideas put into practice and at least some preliminary evaluations undertaken. We plan to repeat the collaboration (ANZVUC2) in March 2012 with the idea refining and extending the ideas and creations of first event. The plan is to have the virtual university island(s) as an ongoing collaborative and space to allow for construction and testing of applications of virtual world technologies to university teaching and learning. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for this and future events. *When: 27 & 28 October 2011, 10am to 5pm Australian EST* *Where: On a new Second Life island (slurl to be advised)* *Who should attend:* Anyone interested in virtual learning environments and how they might be used in any aspect of modern university life - teaching, learning, research, administration, marketing, alumni relations etc. The event is suitable for both experienced SL users and those new to virtual world technologies. However we do ask that those new to Second Life spend sufficient time prior event to master the basic skills to attend and interaction in virtual world sessions. Advice on the minimum skill set needed and on training sites can be provided. For advanced users there will be an opportunity to build and/or work with other participants and experienced SL builders who will be contacted to provide support for the project. Everyone will be encouraged to network and collaborate and a range of Web 2.0 tools will be set up to facilitate this. *Registration:* The fee to participate is *AUD$325 (inc. GST)* and includes the conference and related workshop, tutorial, demonstration and tour session plus 3 months access to the constructed spaces. It is expected that participants will have a SL avatar and have acquired at the least the basic skills of interacting in a virtual environment. The event is limited to *50 participants*. We do expect the event to be fully subscribed so please register early to secure your place. *Check out our scoop.it page: http://www.scoop.it/t/virtual-university-education-in-virtual-worlds/* * * *Registration available at: http://adfi.usq.edu.au/encke.html* -- Dr Helen Farley Senior Lecturer and Mission Leader (Mobility) *Australian Digital Futures Institute* University of Southern Queensland Q 4350 Australia *Ph:* +617 4631 1738 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting +617 4631 1738 end_of_the_skype_highlighting *Mob:* +401 878 880 *Email:* Helen.Farley(a)usq.edu.au *Skype:* helenf5300 *Second Life:* Helen Frak *The Australian Digital Futures Institute *explores hindsight and insight and enables foresight for the learning, teaching, research, knowledge construction and creative expression.
