Dear colleagues I’m one of the Chief Investigators on a Australian Research Council-funded project which is offering a scholarship (including living allowance) to support a PhD student commencing in 2011. This information is also available at http://digitalstorytelling.ci.qut.edu.au/index.php/events/view/163/ Cheers Jean The project Applications are invited for a Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Faculty-based scholarship to support a PhD project (3 years) that investigates the links between community arts, media, storytelling, and creative participation. This Research Higher Degree (RHD) project will be undertaken in conjunction with an Australian Research Council-funded Linkage with industry. The successful applicant will work with Creative Industries Faculty Chief Investigators – Drs Christina Spurgeon, Helen Klaebe, Jean Burgess, John Hartley and Brad Haseman – to devise and undertake a research project that will contribute to establishing and improving ‘best practice’ knowledge of co-creative media in Australian community media and arts networks. The candidate will participate in project activities including fieldwork, experiments, and symposia, contribute to scholarly outputs of the project, and will have access to a team of nationally and internationally recognised researchers, as well as national and international academic and industry networks. Availability The scholarship will be awarded in the QUT 2012 scholarship round which closes on 14th October 2011. Potential applicants should contact Dr Christina Spurgeon (c.spurgeon(a)qut.edu.au ) well before this date, and allow sufficient time to complete the application form. The successful applicant would be expected to commence between January and March 2012. It investigates the extent to which existing agencies and networks in community arts and community media use co-creative techniques such as digital storytelling to achieve their own aims. The research explores the tensions between new media and existing infrastructure, amateur and professional creativity, and the role of community-based agencies in extending digital literacy, especially among at-risk, remote, and under-served populations. In cooperation with the project’s Industry Partners, we will devise a model for evaluating best practice in the production, adaptation and use of non-professional innovation in creative content. Industry partner organisations are the Australia Council for the Arts, The Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Goolarri Media Enterprises, Queensland Community Television and the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. http://iiep-project.eu/ International Joint Workshop on Immigrant Inclusion by e-Participation November 2-3 2011, at the University of Helsinki, Finland The aim of the workshop is to gather an up-to-date account on facts, policies, technologies as well as research results on electronic and web-based means of immigrant participation in the society, and to discuss whether these means can contribute to the overall inclusion of immigrants. The pronounced approach of the issue is bottom-up, emphasizing immigrants’ own needs, initiatives, organizations as well as their web competences and practices as the starting point of active citizenship. We encourage not only academic communities but also citizen groups, activists, NGOs and authorities to submit in order to gain a holistic picture of the issue. Accordingly, the submissions may take the form of position statements, white papers as well as initiatives or research results. The candidate must be able to conduct statistical analyses on very large, heterogeneous data sets and create innovative and compelling visualizations that capture the patterns, dynamism and movement in the patterns. Example projects could include writing software to track how people use their mobile phones, deploying that script on a few hundred devices for a month, and analyzing + visualizing the results. Or, mining a hundred years of US patent data and creating an interactive display about trends in innovation. The candidate must also create, maintain, and troubleshoot software on multiple platforms, work with engineers and ethnographers to develop projects, methods, and tools for discovery, analysis and synthesis and communicate research findings to engineering and business stakeholders. The candidate will translate findings into technology, product, service and business concepts and work extensively with IXR, IL and other Intel business units. The ideal candidate will have experience with one or more of the following: Information Visualization, Computer Science, Statistics Qualifications This position requires an ability to combine elements of machine learning, statistical data analytics, and data visualization to support social and drive research agendas. This position requires a proven ability connecting quantitative methods with such qualitative social research methods as ethnography, surveys, observation, and media studies.
